January transfer windows are never the times for the long term plan.

Pretty sure Spurs will be looking for long-term fixes to CM and CB positions in January.  Its more expensive in January, generally, but, I think Spurs will be looking for players who are out of contract in the summer, and trying to get them in early.

It's hard to know.  They stayed up last season because Willock got really hot on loan (which he hasn't seemed to be able to recreate this year) and St. Maximim had a nice run of the good St. Maximim.

I'd say that with their resources, I think they should be able to get in sufficient quality in January to be safe.  They haven't been great scoring goals or with not conceding, but I think scoring goals might be an easier fix.  They don't need to be looking for home runs.  They could probably improve at striker and midfield with a relatively modest investment.  Dwight Gayle, a 29 year-old Callum Wilson after some injuries, and Joelinton strikes me as a pretty ragged striker group.  Maybe make a bid to Wolfsburg for a guy like Wout Weghorst, who wouldn't break the bank but would be a pretty big upgrade.  I'm a bit surprised they're so bad defensively, because Lascelles and Schar and Dubrovka don't strike me as particularly bad players.  My guess is Howe might be able to clean up a lot of that without needing to necessarily get much help.

I know there's talk of them taking Coutinho off of Barca's hands too.
Rumors they want Lingard, Jones and Martial although I just think that's United fans wishful thinking.

:scared: if they buy Lingard United should throw in Jones for free.

Remember when Newcastle got relegated and their entire midfield then got bought for big transfer fees?  Good times.  And in fairness, Wjindalum totally worked out.  Sissoko did his Sissoko thing where he looked incredible for about 3 games out of every 30.  The point being that it's hard to just look at a roster and say they have the talent.  So much is about fit.  Wjindalum was a perfect fit for Liverpool in a team that could allow him to do his thing (it's a lot easier being a late arriving goal scoring midfielder when you have a front three that scares every backline ####less).

If I'm not mistaken there were accusations of work ethic issues with him which is why he ended up being sold. I could be wrong but that was one of the rumors I read.

Our Backline isn't great. Against Place we really should've given up 5 to Benetke who hit the wood work on one, the cross bar on another and point blank range on one late in the 2nd half. Newcastles back Line has been more lucky then good this season. But we need a MF and some dam Strikers.

Only 2 clubs are undefeated in their domestic league still going into this campaign and our 2nd international break of the campaign. Both are in the same league.

GERMANY?

NOPE

SPAIN

NOPE

FRANCE?

NOPE

ENGLAND?

NOPE

ITALY?

SI

WHO ARE THEY?

Well I'm glad you asked.

One is from the South in NAPOLI

The Other is North in the Lombardy Region AC MILAN

You fun Futboll fact of the week going into international break. Both Clubs still have a goose egg in the L column and both have won and or Drawn in all their domestic matches so far. If this continues DEC 19th is their first meeting of the year for an eventual defeat but they could draw then. Dec 19th can't come fast enough

Sporting look poised to crash out of the playoffs early after a promising regular season, as is tradition

All the bids were due yesterday

BREAKING: ESPN has confirmed it has placed a major bid for U.S. rights to the Premier League. "Good conversations. We're excited to see where it goes," said ESPN President of Programming & Original Content Burke Magnus.

Forgot to post this yesterday - but it looks like safe-standing will be coming to EPL starting in January:

"We are delighted to announce that Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has received approval for licensed safe standing in seated areas from 1 January, 2022, following an announcement from the Sports Minister, Nigel Huddleston, today.

We join Cardiff City, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United as the first clubs in the top two tiers of football in England and Wales to allow standing in nearly 30 years, pioneering a new approach which offers fans the choice to stand in certain areas of our stadium."

For Spurs - it will move the South stand (single tier) to safe-standing, along with the Away section.  Both were designed to be safe-standing when the stadium was built.

He was sold because Liverpool was willing to pay 30 million to a relegated club.

So this is standing room only? Shocked the EPL didn't already have this

hmmm... not sure if we are on the same wave length here.  When I think of Standing Room Only, I think of people who are in the stadium, but without assigned seats.

EPL/England has required all-seaters since 1994 - following the report issued on the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989.

Recently rules have changed, and 5 clubs have applied to trial "safe-standing" in their stadiums.  The rules still require that each fan is assigned to a seat - but certain sections of the seating will have rails in front of each seat, allowing people to stand up against the rail during the game.  The rails help reduce the risk of any kind of forward surge.

For Spurs, I think it is the bottom half of the South stand that was designed for Safe Standing  - so affecting maybe 8000ish seats?

The Away section is also required to have a safe standing area in these trials.

From Spurs website:

Clubs had to meet a number of criteria in order to receive approval to have licensed standing areas, including:

• The necessary infrastructure being in place before 1 January, 2022 – such as seats with barriers/independent barriers – which must be in both home and away sections.
• The seats cannot be locked in the ‘up’ or ‘down’ position, allowing fans the option of being able to sit (for example, during breaks in play).
• There must also be one seat/space per person.
• The licensed standing areas must not impact the viewing standards or other fans, including disabled fans.
• There must be a Code of Conduct in place for fans in the licensed standing area.
• Briefing and training must be in place for staff and stewards to ensure only relevant ticket holders are admitted to the licensed standing areas.
• CCTV must be in place and offer full coverage of the licensed standing areas.
• The ground must consult with its Safety Advisory Group about plans for the licensed standing areas.

Importantly, it is not a reintroduction of terraces in top flight grounds and other areas of our stadium will remain subject to the Government’s all-seater policy.

well this is just insanity of the highest level.   Sounds like Tanya Harding all over again

I'm still confused. are you telling me there's no standing room in UK with no assigned seating then? I just figured everywhere had that.

Thats one way to rid the competition. It's great if it works but you are screwed for life if it doesn't

All stadiums are all-seaters - meaning everyone in the stadium has to have a seat.

Got it I was just confused and thought they had standing room. Now I know why when I asked my question about tickets and standing room at St James Park people were wondering what the hell I was talking about and just confusing everyone more.

It looks like Gerrard has slipped back into the PL - taking over at Aston Villa.

I imagine this is a decent stepping-stone for him - good size club, modest ambitions.  I am sure this is an audition for the Liverpool job when Klopp leaves.

Yeah -- Villa's the perfect chance for him to get his feet under him and prove himself ready to take the next step.

I am watching Uganda vs Kenya WC qualifying ight now... there is no crowd in Uganda but there is a single fan somewhere in the stadium with a vuvuzela and it makes for an amazing viewing experience!

They showed a "crowd" shot during halftime.  There are at leat 25 Ugandan fans there.

ETA: the one with the vuvuzela was not pictured though.

Uganda just tied the game in the 90th minute when the attacker kicked the ball out of the keeper's hands inside of 6 yard box.  That's so AFCON.

P.S. the dude with the vuvuzela went CRAZY!

thanks for that link... different than what I thought- expected the GK to have it in his hands, ready to punt. hard to tell- but I think the UGA guy actually gets there before the GK picks it up and has control.
