I have been following this on and off most of the day.  Every time I checked in to the hearing it sounded like it was going horribly.   But some how the thing passed.  Miami will have a fabulous stadium in Miami in the coming years.

I feel bad for the citizens though as the people opposed to this seem convinced this will be as bad a deal as Marlins Park was for the City.

Chelsea owner update:

The Stephen Pagliuca group (Bain Capital, Boston Celtics,  Atalanta) is almost certainly out of the running as of yesterday.  That leaves the groups lead by Todd Boehly (LA Dodgers) and Sir Martin Broughton (British Airways,  former Liverpool FC chairman) among the bidders on the short list approved by Raine. Broughton's bid is largely funded by American money from David Blitzer and Josh Harris who would have to divest their stake in Crystal Palace if their bid is chosen. Both groups include a long list of different funding sources and various celebrities and hangers-on, but I think its fair to say both are  primarily American-based ownership groups.

But wait! It was learned yesterday that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has lobbed in a late £4 billion bid. I thought the sale process was closed to new bidders, but I guess that's really never the case when a serious bid of that size enters the sandbox. Exiting bids were believed to be hovering around £3 billion. However, it seems much of Ratcliffe's £4 billion is in the form of future commitments to things like stadium development and other infrastructure. Ratcliffe earned his billions in petrochem. He has the advantage of being the only completely British bidder, but the disadvantage of being a Manchester United supporter. Ratcliffe's statement:

“We are the only British bid. Our motives are simply to try and create a very fine club in London. We have no profit motive because we make our money in other ways.”

“We believe that London should have a club that reflects the stature of the city. One that is held in the same regard as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich. We intend Chelsea to be that club.

“We are making this investment as fans of the beautiful game – not as a means to turn a profit. We do that with our core businesses. The club is rooted in its community and its fans and it is our intention to invest in Chelsea FC for that reason.”

The Seattle Sounders announce that more than 61,000 tickets have been sold for their CONCACAF Champions League final against Pumas. This would set the record for the largest crowd for a CONCACAF CL match

 
AFC Wimbledon has been relegated from League One after six seasons in the third tier. The Dons have had a dreadful run of form and went without a league win since December.

The club's budget is probably more in line with League Two. Their finances are solid after their Plough Lane stadium development was funded largely through self-issued bonds rather than commercial loans. The debate among supporters whether to remain fan-owned or to seek outside investors will continue.

They managed to get some guys a little rest last night and have ~4 days after Villareal to get ready for Spurs.

The rotation might come @Villa on shorter rest.  Tottenham are a way better side, but away on < 72 hours rest makes Villa the tougher game IMO.

Really hoping they get the Ws in these two games to effectively set up four Finals in two weeks.

correct - it was Steve Hodge.  Hodge wrote an autobiography named "The Man With Maradona's Shirt"

From his wiki page:

Following Maradona’s death in November 2020, Hodge was subjected to numerous requests from people wishing to buy the shirt he had swapped with Maradona at the end of the World Cup quarter-final in 1986. Hodge said, "It’s not for sale. I am not trying to sell it."[3] However, Hodge felt that it was the right time to sell the shirt through the reputable international auction house Sotheby's in April 2022.

After the shirt sale was announced Maradona’s daughter Dalma and ex-wife Claudia made claims that the shirt wasn’t the same shirt that Maradona scored both goals in. However this was later disproved by Sotheby’s after working with Photo Resolution imagery to determine the authenticity of the shirt and also referring to Maradona's autobiography in which he states that he gave the shirt to Hodge in the tunnel after the game prior to returning to the changing room. [5] In May 2022, the shirt sold for £7.1m, a record for a shirt worn during a sporting event. [6]

I am just glad to see it happen finally. It has been close a few times.

DMB does not think this is the start of anything consistent.  He seems to think too many teams don't value the CCL enough.

interesting thoughts... thanks for sharing that.

I think another part of the problem will continue to be the timing- starting this thing in pre-season for MLS while Mex is in full swing.

 
I am with you guys, I wish MLS teams took this more seriously. They should want to play in the Club World Cup and see if they can get to the European CL champs. Even if the CWC competition is a joke to the Europeans, you should still want to get there.  Play the likes of RM, Bayern, Liverpool, etc in a somewhat more meaningful game than a preseason friendly.  Raise the profile...

Clearlake-Boehly enter into their final day of exclusive talks and expect to sign a purchase agreement to buy #CFC. There are a number of logistical steps once a final deal is reached. This includes the EPL’s O&D Test, government approval and transfer of funds.

A legally binding sale agreement does NOT have to be signed by today. The parties will continue beyond Friday if they need to. There is confidence they won’t have to but it’s not a rigid deadline. And from final negotiations to an actual sale, two weeks will likely be needed.

EPL sources tell me they expect to complete the O&D Test within seven days having already ‘soft vetted’ the listed directors. They must also assess three-year business plans. They can’t officially do this until they are fully locked.

DCMS sources say the government are content freezing the debt and are also “comfortably” in a position to approve a sale before May 31. The official line remain #CFC’s special licence will not be extended beyond that. It’s being called “a hard deadline”.

Raine will turn to Sir Martin Broughton if anything unexpected stops Clearlake-Boehly taking over. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is not the back up. Raine are not prepared to engage with the Nice owner at this stage having already communicated in writing he is not part of the process.

Of course it counts but I think everyone understands the massive difference between playing every single game at home vs having to go on the road in Concacaf numerous times over a few months.

Think of how easy WC qualification would be if we played every game at home.  The formats were so different, it is hard to compare for most fans.

I get all that of course.  But it was still the same competition and they won it.  Saying it's the first time it ever happened is just not right. 

No one said Manchester United was the first English team to win the European championship in 1999 (the format got much harder throughout the 90s), because that would have been ridiculous.  Everyone understood it was the 2nd time they'd won, even if it was much easier in 1968.

I think people say that stuff all the time.  Look at the EPL for example.  There are always quotes and comments and stats about things that were done in the EPL only, differentiating it from the old Division 1.

Just do any google about "first English team to win Champions League" and you will get a million hits talking about Man U.

As an aside, the old Euro Cup format was INCREDIBLY hard to win.  Not only did you have to be an actual league champion to qualify, every single round was knock out.

 
With season ending fixtures against Liverpool and Leicester, Southampton has crawled back into the relegation picture. Saints will need some help from others.

 
It is important for the plucky little teams to land a decent player every now and then to make sure the balance in the sport is healthy.

The buyout clause for Haaland seems like a bargain.  Will be interesting to see him adapt to the PL and MC adapt to having an actual 10.

it seems so low. especially for a score-at-will 9. 

but yeah- will be interesting to see how a dominant 9 works in Pep's system. I don't remember a lot of traditional types, tbh... Ibra. Eto'o, Henry, Messi...who else...? seems like he uses guys up there who will be part of the press and work their asses off to be in the combinations and then get in front of goal as a false 9. I remember Henry talking about not getting having to make run after run up and also back, when he wasn't getting the ball much... I know Haaland is a hard worker- but Pep seems to expect above and beyond.. unless he switches systems a bit to make use of Haaland's talents (eta: although he didn't do that with the Zlat, and IIRC it wasn't a terribly successful run for him).

Ticket secured for the first leg of our playoff semi vs Forest, the confusion that we've been allowed to play at 3 on a Saturday is compounded by the confusion that the Cup Final will kick off while we're approaching injury time, what the heck

Meanwhile, in full schadenfreude mode at the prospect of the Barnsley derby next season
