I think for the most part coaches and players hate them already.  What's the point of playing teams worse than anyone you'll face all season when they're dialed up to 110% and you're still just trying to get your legs back after a summer in the Mediterranean?

It's the finance and marketing people that push these tours.

I've watched about 30 minutes total from Chelsea's 2 games and would say I really hope the club is getting some good marketing value out of it because I'm not sure how much footballing value there is if any. They were in LA last week, played in Vegas over the weekend and are now camped in Orlando for last nights game (in Charlotte) and this weekend against Arsenal. The players' social media activity shows they've been enjoying themselves at the clubs at every stop. There really can't be much fitness benefit with all the travel and partying, and the games seem near useless. The competition level is fine, and I think Charlotte showed up very well last night and it was a great show for the spectators, but the team is playing guys who have absolutely no chance to be on the roster this season.

It is the same for both teams in that regard.  I think Charlotte had multiple players playing who had never even seen a minute as a pro yet.  The fans are paying good money to see deep reserve or even academy players on both sides.

But as long as people keep paying.......

Maybe a dumb question, but maybe the collective in here knows something.  We're headed over to London for the Saints game and I may have the opportunity to be there the next weekend and try to catch a PL game.  That weekend the home teams that seem to be possible are Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, West Ham, and looks like Brighton is close enough to get to, as well.  I have no idea which ones are even possible to get tickets to or which, given the choice, would be the coolest experience.  Any thoughts/opinions?

Tickets can always be obtained if you have a good chunk of $$$ to throw at them.
On this note, recalling Sand's NW/expense ratio, I would strongly consider looking into a hospitality package.  I didn't realize these things existed the last times I've been to games in Europe, but something I really want to check out.

The unlimited subs makes it even worse too.   Maybe limit it to 6 like the old days.

I think Charlotte played 26 players last night.  That is absurd imo.

Sure. Just saying from the Club America perspective. There are a lot of teams/stadiums in North America to host these things. You don't want to be the club that is hurting other players.

Yeah, down to the 3rd string GK by the end. Not sure if he has even played a game before.

I disagree on the subs though. I think they should be unlimited and there is a little reason for the European players to play 90. Throw in the general temperature/humidity difference and return from vacation. Otherwise the stars would just sit these out even more. With the unlimited subs, the Americans get to see at least a little bit of the star players they are presumably paying for.

Tickets can always be obtained if you have a good chunk of $$$ to throw at them. Looking at who they play, Arsenal is probably unavailable (and likely moved for TV out of your Saturday window), Brighton might be similar, but the remainder I would guess might be possible. If you consider Brighton close enough, you can probably chuck in Forest as well just in terms of timings, but newly promoted team vs moderately local rival is likely an impossible ticket ask.

But yep, as mentioned, don't limit yourself to Premier League teams unless you want to say you've specifically been to a PL match - Millwall/QPR are both at home that weekend in London, Loftus Road's a bit of a dump, but the Den's perfectly fine and Bermondsey's not a bad area if you're a beer aficionado. Seems a bit limited any further down the league than that on that weekend
Brighton is a 1 hour train ride and a destination in itself.  Forest is further and all by itself out there, so I eliminated them.  I'll definitely look into Millwall/QPR.

That was last year.  It's already an expensive trip, so some luxe hospitality package is likely out.  Mostly just want to see a game at a reasonable cost.  West Ham still top of the list as a derby.

"MLS close to getting simulcast deals with ESPN and Fox Sports for 2023-2026 with combined worth of $17m per year. Similar deal with Univision likely as well."

======================

Note that this is an extension to the $250m per year deal with Apple.  As I understand it, Fox and ESPN will simply simulcast the games produced by Apple.  This gives MLS the best of both worlds.  Lots of money from streaming and keeping themselves on linear TV.

If it all adds up, it should be around $284m a year.

Mayor Adams is on board with new NYC stadium, likely near Shea/US tennis center. Still have lots of red tape and bureaucracy to get through.

One of my favorite parts of this sport is that no matter how dysfunctional the team is you support, there is ALWAYS some other team more dysfunctional.

Here is the Torino head coach and Torino Sporting Director engaging in discussions

Free refreshments offer for fan hit by ball during match

Just a brilliant photo. Guy is in a white T, and tragically chooses to only eat and drink orange on this day.

His lady friend tries to steal the show, by dressing to match his snacks, and uses his moment of embarrassment/fame to drop a dab.

Anyone know what orange thing he's eating? They are in Scotland, so I guess he's drinking irn bru, Scotland's soft drink. But that food, it looks like a McDonald's apple pie covered in Doritos dust.

And for us, it's the clowns up the road in S6

I guess starting the new season with pretty much the same lineup that sucked last season doesn't seem to change things.

Hard to win with McFred and Maguire in the center of your park. And Bruno and Rashford missing sitters.

2 games in and United is at the bottom of the table. 1 own goal for, 6 against. Several underperformers.

ETH is at a crucial moment here and has a chance to set things right. IMO he needs to do what the last two wouldn't, and that is sit anyone who isn't performing. He can not continue to start players that are not following instructions or are making too many mistakes. Previous managers had a team of untouchables and no matter what they kept starting. Then the rare occasion one had to sit (injury, suspension, etc), the backup would fail because it wouldnt matter. They could have the best game ever seen and the starter would come back no matter how bad they had been.

De Gea, Fred, McT, Maguire. Sit them. Create competition. Create an atmosphere where you have to perform or you don't play. Bruno, Ronaldo, whoever.

And if that means your lineup vs Liverpool is Heaton, AWB, Varane, Martinez, Malacia, Garner, DvB, Erickson, Garanacho, Martial, Elanga then so be it. But to continue to trot out the players that let Ole and Rangnick down last season and already 2 games this season is just asinine.

As the Ronaldo turns, these are the days of my life......

Well, De Jong? Casameiro? Pulisic? All players who have ever played? Heck, soon enough everyone in this thread will be linked with a move to United.

a ton of reports out of Spain say Dest is actively negotiating with United over personal terms.

Are these the same reports that say Barca is interested in AWB and Dalot to improve their right back depth?
Or the ones that said United turned down an offer from Barca to buy Harry Maguire?

Not saying its not happening. I am not sure Dest is much different than Dalot. Both have a rep for being decent going forward and not being a defender.

Supposedly Casameiro is getting closer, bid for Anthony rejected, and Cody Gakpo is a new target. Plus the Pulisic and now Dest rumors....

Sounds like Casemiro to United might happen. He would be a big upgrade in their midfield but why would Real let him go? He was a huge part of why they crushed people season.

Both RM and United have confirmed its done pending a physical. Even at 30 it should be an upgrade and a true DM.

Cavaminga makes Casemiro expendable. Plus reports were that Cas felt his time was up at RM and he should move on.

Who says no to this?

LINK: Pulisic for Maguire?
Chelsea have reportedly asked Manchester United about the availability of captain Harry Maguire as the summer transfer window nears its end.

The Blues are currently in contact with United over a potential deal for Christian Pulisic. The American forward is being considered by Erik ten Hag’s side, who are keen to strengthen their attacking options, with Ajax’s Antony and PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo other options.

But the enquiry about Maguire comes as a major surprise from Chelsea, who have been busy in the summer transfer window. The Daily Mail says that Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana remains the club’s top priority, but United have been sounded out about Maguire as a potential alternative as part of a swap for Pulisic.

Oh right, Chelsea should!

Some personal news on my End. As some know I joined the Milan Philly Club supporters this past spring officially. My VP of the club is getting married in Perugia in Southern Italy Heel of the boot next Tues and won't be home till Sept 1O. My President will be going to the wedding so no meet up and he's then going to Milan with his wife for the Derby vs Inter as it's the Milan Home match in the series. That means Milan Club Philly has no host for our meet up at our spot for the big Match. My president last year took everyones info and now posting a somewhat official club news letter of sorts out now. Asking for ideas, group events etc. Anyway My president asked myself and our our ranking Sargent in Arms of Technology to host the Darby for him and the VP.

Very Honored to do this and hope we get a lot of people

I saw this online today. It is one of the oddest plays I have ever seen. I can only assume there was some sort of optical illusion that caused the team to think they had scored.

watch the whole clip.

When the keeper hits the net, the ball pops back out. I'm assuming it hit the post, which is what it looked like, but I could see where it looked like the ball hit the net since the net moved....

Some fairly reliable people reporting Newcastle just shot the locks off their wallet and have agreed with Real
Sociedad for Alexander Isak. ⚽🥅

Saw this one yesterday as well. I couldn't figure out for a long time why it wasn't initially called a goal. I believe others are right that the ball hit the post at the same time the keeper hit the net. Actually a pretty nice save from the keeper, if he deflected it into the post.

there is something quite interesting about this clip from optical POV. Some people only see the post being hit and others only see the ball going in the net.

Yeah. Wasn't going to say anything, but the ball bounces off the post about 2/3rds of the way up when I watch. I can't see what most people are seeing.

I think the giveaway for me is that the ball is always between the camera and the keeper -- it's not over his head, it's off to the side when it bounces.

depth perception may have something to with it as well. The striker immediately knew it was not in but the guys in midfield and the keeper, doing what ever the **** he was doing, clearly thought it went in.
