I think I am now actively rooting for West Ham to win Europa Conference League. And get relegated from the EPL.

I love the idea of a championship side playing in Europa next season.

This has happened more than once before when a Championship team reached the Cup final but then lost to a team that had a Champions League place. I'm also fairly certain that when Wigan won the FA Cup they got relegated the same year

pompey had something like this happen too? FA cup finals, but the year of their financial thing?

I always cringe when it comes to the NIMBY portion of building a stadium but it looks like this could not have gone better for NYCFC. Looks to be almost total by in

That's fantastic.

I'm there every weekend with floppinha for tennis. Corona park is packed every weekend with young Hispanic families, and obviously tons of soccer. The stadium is really in a perfect spot- and easy, albeit longish, subway ride on the 7 train from Manhattan through queens. The 7 ties into all the trains serving other boroughs, so this will truly be a NYC team. I'll be likely switching allegiance from RBs to NYC, especially if my other college teammate remains their team dr.

So, Ipswich Town sacked Paul Cook after a pretty disheartening run of form. They’re not completely out of it but they weren’t improving. That said, I think maybe it was unrealistic to think Ipswich Town would just waltz into the Championship but that seems like what supporters were expecting.

Anyway, Frank Lampard is one of the main names being mentioned to take over
Looks like it will be Kieren McKenna. Do any of the ManU contingent here (or others more knowledgeable than me which is everyone) have any thoughts on this hire?

McKenna’s got Ipswich Town flying. On pace for their 8th straight win. If results hold, they’ll be in an automatic promotion spot.

Leicester appoint former Norwich City manager Dean Smith as caretaker manager through the end of the season. Craig Shakespeare and John Terry join coaching staff....

Just while I've got a few minutes at half time, please drop some reaction if you have any interest in some sort of "best player ever" draft/poll/list submission project during the off season, and if there's enough interest I'll plan something
we did one a while back, including stadiums and rivalries IIRC... but worth a reboot!

lol... I started down re-reading that draft thread. had to stop myself due to time constraints- but some great stuff in there.

in other news-
Sadio Mane has been suspended by Bayern Munich ahead of their match against Hoffenheim and handed a fine after his postmatch altercation with teammate Leroy Sane on Tuesday.

Multiple reports said Sane suffered a cut lip after the two players clashed in the dressing room after Bayern's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in their first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie. The pair were seen arguing on the pitch late in the match and reportedly clashed after the match with teammates having to separate them.

So am I missing something here with the MLS? They seriously sold virtually all of their rights to Apple, and then the only way you can even watch your local team on TV is to buy the season subscription package?

Really? The only sport in existence that does that then? And the least popular one in America?

That officially eliminates me as a fan, and I can't imagine I'm the only one.

Seems like an interesting marketing strategy.

I think this is something we are all going to have to get used for all sports that are not the NFL. MLS is just the first to foray into this but it seems almost certain that all other leagues will be forced in this direction with the financial collapse of regional sports networks where the vast majority of local teams sports currently are broadcast.

I think we will see a lot of changes in the coming decade, with all the leagues watching to see how things go for MLS on Apple.

Some one like Google will make an offer that the NHL or NBA can't refuse would be my guess.

I think Atlanta is going to get close to $30m for him and break the MLS transfer record. This kid looks like the real deal. Source is the Official Radio of Napoli

[Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli] Napoli is very near to close the transfer of Thiago Almada.

"We had the best coaches in the world in the room," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said. "We showed them a situation where a ball hits the hand of a player and we asked penalty or no penalty, half said penalty, half said no penalty."

Got my ticket to the double header at the Benz. Brentford v Brighton then hopefully Miggy gets some time in the nightcap for Newcastle against Chelsea. I’m assuming there’s almost no chance CP plays. Either way, looking forward to it but sucks that it’s on a Wednesday.
I thought today was the first day for ticket sales?

P.S. I got Chelsea v BHA tix

first player to score 4 against Real Madrid this century...
Players just don't score four goals in one game against Real Madrid. The last to do so was a certain Robert Lewandowski -- now a Barca player -- in a 4-1 Champions League semifinal win for Borussia Dortmund in April 2013. In LaLiga, you have to go all the way back to December 1947 and Esteban Echevarría, who scored five for Real Oviedo in a 7-1 thrashing.

Dang... Wimbledon almost fell out of the EFL. They're safe in 19th in League Two, but I wonder who the last FA Cup winner to fall out of the top four leagues was?

Also, is it crazy to imagine that Wrexham ends up being a top club in the EPL? At the least, a global following with the money being churned back into the club seems like it should chew through League Two and League One in 4 or 5 years if they get the players and coaching right.

This is for Atlanta - I assume yours is Philly?

I spent some time thinking about it - I think it’s doable to continue promotion but to get to EPL and then be a top team would most likely require additional investors which makes things tricky. Swansea and Cardiff have both been up from Wales recently.

Will need better facilities at some point, in order to create more matchday revenue that can be poured back into the team. As noted above, will also need additional investors at some point. Probably need to start beefing up their academy and scouting as well. Would do them well to grow some players internally and sell them or find some gems that can contribute to the first team.

Basically, like any version of Football Manager I've played in the last 5-10 years.

Yes... and I just found out this morning that it is unlikely that I will be able to attend :hot:

Maybe I can get tickets for DC?

Low key, Chelsea are in a relegation battle.

I mean these stats below were unimaginable at the start of the season

Chelsea is currently 15 points out of Europa League
Chelsea is currently 10 points out of relegation

How much money could we have won saying something this ridiculous at the beginning of the year?
I saw where they will need net negative $200m in player sales this summer to meet FFP if they miss Europe.
They will need some for sure, but I don't think anyone has the definitive answer to that.... especially with COVID and Chelsea's sale(plus debt forgiveness by Roman).

They will naturally be net sellers this summer just due to squad size. 33 senior players is the last I heard plus 3 incoming already signed.(Nkunku, Gusto, and Santos)

Mount has one year left on his contract. They won't take chances losing him on a free IMO, plus he's surplus to what they need. $70M minimum for an Englishman of his standard IMO.
Pulisic is gone. Surplus, plus still attractive to teams. $35-40M IMO.
Kovacic is gone too IMO. He's been talking to clubs and Chelsea is on the verge of re-signing Kante from all reports. Don't think they go into next year with 2 aging midfielders based on their project... another $35-40M.

That's $140-150M in three players that I think WILL be sold.

These guys WILL be sold too, but won't generate nearly as much return...
Ziyech... ~$20M maybe
RLC... ~ $15M
CHO... ~$15-20M
Aubamayang... $8-10M
Ampadu.... ~$10M
Bakayoko... ~$5M?

That's another $75M (probably a little less) that likely gets moved this summer IMO.

Then there's these guys...
Havertz - $75M
Gallagher - $40M
Colwill - $45M
Lukaku - $50-60M
Kepa - $25-30M
Chalobah - $30M
Mendy - $20M
Azpilucueta - $5M

Any, or all, of these guys could also be leaving Chelsea IMO.
If Mount stays, then Havertz leaves is my guess since there wouldn't be room for both them and Nkunku to get a lot of game time.
One of Chalobah or Colwill gets sold IMO.
Gallagher gets sold unless Poch is a huge fan.
Lukaku will get sold if they can find a buyer for anywhere over half of what they bought him for IMO.
One OR EVEN BOTH of Kepa and Mendy gets sold.
Azpi is gone... whether they can get a small fee for him or release him is the question.

That likely means Chelsea unloads ~$300M in unneeded players this summer, maybe as high as $350M. I don't think they have any worry about FFP and I actually think they'll be a big buyer again this summer(to the chagrin of many).

A $100M player with 5 years allocated to FFP rules(new rules) is $20M against FFP this year. The rules really make it easy for teams with big pocketbooks to keep spending.
