And once he starts banging in the goals, no one will remember.
Yeah, I don't really see any issue with Man U bringing him back. Nasty accusations, but that's all they are.
The video and pictures were pretty damning but really only 2 people know what happened.

A woman's fan group has already issued a statement and some of the women's team had expressed opinions (awhile back, before the case was dropped I think) so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I was driving around and turned on sports radio. I was shocked to hear them talking soccer (which outside of the WC is almost never) and then I recognized the voice on the phone as being Twellman's. They had him on to talk about Messi.

Twellman has worked in the area before and had worked with these hosts before so they all knew each other.

Shockingly to me, because I do not like Twellman as a color guy, he was absolutely fantastic in this radio spot. He spoke quickly, gave tons and tons of information, translated the weird soccer stuff into other sports that the audience/hosts could then relate to. The hosts seemed to have a genuine interest and understanding of the massive impact Messi has already had (they at least did their home work if nothing else.)

The big question the hosts had was whether the Apple TV deal was hurting the league by not getting Messi in front of enough eyes and Twellman did a great job (as an Apple employee of course) in explaining that Apple is not thinking domestically, they are thinking globally. He gave some numbers (which may have been made up for all I know), to show the massive difference in views between Messi's first goal globally on Apple TV vs Zlatan's first goal for LA on ESPN.

One of the hosts called the Messi story the most interesting in all of sports right now and he is far from a soccer guy.

Pretty cool overall and a nice break from how much John Henry and Bill Belichick suck. :)

Philly vs Monterrey in the 3rd place game (winner of this game qualifies for the 2024 Champions Cup).
I just learned that Monterrey has already qualified for the CCC through Liga MX play. If Monterray wins the 3rd place game, the team that benefits would be the next team in line in the Liga MX previous standings which looks like Leon.

There's accusations, and then there are Ray Rice type accusations.... this is even worse than the Ray Rice case.

There's literally a video and a voice recording of him raping her. Her repeatedly saying no over and over in desperation. There were photos uploaded of her covered in bruises.

Then, despite having a restraining order against him providing ZERO contact with the woman. He meets with her anyways(and receives zero punishment for breaking the restraining order) and a few days later she drops the charges.

This isn't a case of "there's terrible accusations, but it's tough to prove." This is an actual rape and domestic abuse that occurred with tons of evidence, but one where the victim has obviously been paid off, or threatened into cooperating with the accused. With the victim unwilling to testify, there's very little chance of getting a charge to stick, but this case was SO damning that the prosecutor almost went forward with the trial anyways even after the victim decided not to testify.

If ManU lets him back in to play, they're cowards. They'll lose a significant amount of their women fans and rightfully so. Hopefully they'll lose a large enough portion of their male fans that'll it'll hurt enough to send a message to future teams that think about employing abusers like this just because they're so good at kicking a ball.

Looks like Newcastle is closing in on Lewis Hall from Chelsea. Chelsea supporters seem a little upset to lose a young talent like him, so that’s encouraging. Eddie Howe’s Young and Technically Gifted Mighty Mags!

from BBC...

Brazil forward Neymar, 31, requested a 25-room mansion, swimming pool and sauna, eight workers to keep his house tidy, nine cars and all expenses paid for travel, restaurants and hotels when he signed for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. (Cope via Goal)

and I'm surprised about this- thought he was their present and future (health issues aside). feels like a bigger move than is being reported across media platforms

Spain forward Ansu Fati, 20, has chosen to leave Barcelona, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham among the clubs interested. (AS - in Spanish)

Ansu is a lot like Gio in that both showed so much promise when they first broke in but never ending injuries have halted their progress and development significantly.

~Three years ago, both were considered amongst the top players world wide in their age group. Now both are trying to restart their careers and praying for just a solid run of no injuries.

Early sentiment from Tottenham fans (online, so huge grains of salt) is Fati would be too expensive for Spurs to buy. Also that he has no knees left.

Could be an interesting move and I don't hate the idea, but feel like Spurs could better spend the 50M+ on a CB or a proven striker.

Twellman is not a bad pundit. Some of his stuff sounds made up but overall he's a much better pundit than he is a color guy in games. He needs to do more of this and less game calls.

And the Messi story is huge. Was talking to some people last night and it came up. Not even sure they are soccer guys. They were just so amazed that Messi took Miami from worst to first (I had to explain to them the difference between the Leagues Cup and their domestic season but I will overlook that since they were paying attn to MLS).

Step 1 - Player says he wants to leave
Step 2 - Link player to Man United to increase the price
Step 3 - Claim player rejects Man United to fans can banter

Twellman was making the hype case to the hosts who also brought up how horrendous Miami was before Messi arrived that if Miami continue the leagues cup play into the MLS season, that we could be looking at one of the greatest mid season turn arounds in American sports history.

The best thing Twellman did though was to do a good job explaining that it is more than just Messi. He made excellent cases about Busquets, Alba, Tata and all the new young players they signed. He did a nice job comparing it to Brady bringing Gronk with him to Tampa which the hosts then completely understood the analogy.

The average sports fan is not going to care about all of the extras that Miami did for the turn around, they are just going to see Messi only....which is more than fine.

We are also kind of lucky that the NBA is about to introduce the in season NBA Cup which is another easy thing to give an analogy too (even if it does not really equate to soccer cups but close enough).

Another Messi influence

======

CONCACAF and CONMEBOL have signed an agreement of strategic collaboration with each other to allow more cross competition between teams from their federations. The agreement involves a men’s and women’s national team competitions and a new men’s club tournament

Related, the increased price takes Spurs out of the running. Because Levy.

This guy refuses to make a wrong step so far. I keep waiting for the piano to fall......

NEWS: In his press conference today, Lionel Messi says he has no issues playing on artificial grass. That's a big deal for
@MLS, and for a handful of teams with artificial fields that host @InterMiamiCF in the next few months.
Many European players largely skip turf games.

Wow. United bowed to the pressure and are getting rid of Greenwood. I'm pretty damn surprised.
He probably gets punished with 80 mill a year in Saudi Arabia or something.

Seems like the logical place from United's standpoint. He can't come back to bite them competitively (not that they're making deep UCL runs anyway, but still) and its probably the only place they can get any sort of $$ from.

I'm happy they made this decision - I'm not totally surprised. He's never been a player that isn't seen as totally replaceable and it's not worth the headache. I'd like to think they would make the same decision if he was more valuable but I'm sure they wouldn't.

Random conversation I had with an IRL friend the other day... Who is the second-best striker in the PL right now? Kane is gone so Haaland is the unquestionable #1. Who is your #2? And we're talking striker, so no Salah, etc.

Mitrovic is heading to Saudi, so I really don't know the answer. Maybe Toney, who is suspended or Jesus who is frequently and currently hurt? Nunez? Man, that's not an impressive list.

Seems like everyone in the PL is searching for a striker right now. I can understand why.

I think you have to consider Ollie Watkins.

My favorite side note to the Petrovic to Chelsea deal is that it was widely assumed that back in the day, Kraft was the loudest voice in the room of owners, convincing everyone that they can never sell players as they would make no money and the fans would not understand losing players.

Now Kraft has just made close to $30 million in a 12 month period by selling two relatively low profile keepers. (the Revs paid $1.5m combined for both keepers)

I’m guessing Rashford doesn’t count?

Not sure there’s an obvious guy but 3-5 contenders, most have been mentioned.

Hmm. He is both a striker and wing. He is better on the wing, but I am a fan.

Will defer to others as to me he is a wing.

I think he's more of a winger but has been playing up top out of necessity.

Honestly, it could very well be Alvarez - lol

CP10 had a very nice entrance to Serie A. That goal was a beaut.
The goal was seriously nice. His hockey assist was too.

FYI... We use the usmnt thread for all US players stuff- so you'll see that goal and discussion in there. This is more a general and non-US thread. And there's a match day thread... But we tend to post in the US thread if it's a match involving a US player.

And Christo posts about plus size women.

I agree. He is far more dangerous as a wing and if he were to be a striker full time he would be middle of the pack.

Does anyone know what's going on with the Canada Men's team? Saw a letter from the players on Reddit that they have no games scheduled in the next break and there's some in-fighting between them and the federation.

I'm not upset about the situation, and they got a little full of themselves during the last WCQ, just wanting a basic rundown.

I've looked into a little bit since it was interesting/crazy for this to be happening IMO.

A couple of issues... The Canadian men's and women's teams have agreed to equal compensation going forward... much like the US teams.

The Canadian Soccer Business organization has a broadcast deal with Canada Soccer in which they pay a certain yearly amount to Canada Soccer while keeping the rest to help promote/build the Canadian Premier League. From most reports... that deal is essentially bankrupting Canada Soccer while putting money into the pockets of the CPL's owners.

Canada Soccer has reneged on multiple contract offers to offer less each time and as of right now, they're asking the national teams to take around a 75% per game reduction from their previous contract.

Without agreements in place, Canada Soccer is refusing to schedule any friendlies going forward and are even threatening to opt out of the next Nation's League games, which would keep them from Copa America qualification possibility next year.

The Canadian men's and women's players... on the other hand..... haven't been paid for any games since last year... including both men's and women's World Cups.

What a mess. Makes it sound like our Fed is actually good. LOL.

I did read that the TV contract pays 3mil/year and is in place until like 2035 or something. That has to hurt as they finally got good enough to get some decent TV money and can't cash in.

Has anyone here bought Champions League tickets as an away supporter? We’re going to Europe for vacation in any event but I would love to plan the trip around seeing Newcastle play on the road.
