Herdman's walk of shame shows no sign of slowing down

=====================

Pen saved, game finished 10 v 10, and a late winner to go top of the league. Had worse Friday nights although I should be nearly home now rather than still in Sheffield

The camera zooms back in toward the growing crowd in front of the team benches, composed of fans, players, team staff, and officials. One fan in a green jacket, who was seen exiting the stands and running across the field, is seen running towards one fleeing official before turning toward a closer one. The fan then kicks the official, before his own momentum takes him down. The referee now begins to back away as more of the group inches towards him.

The camera eventually pans back to the center referee, who is being accosted by a fan in a brown hoodie and beanie as he backs off the field. Members of Sharktopus, both fans and staff, and possibly others begin blocking and forming a moving wall to protect the official as the crowd begins to grow. At one point, the team helped the official climb a chain link fence to get out of the field area, all while he appears to be making a phone call. He’s then seen running to the high school auditorium as the video continues for about another minute. It is unclear what happened to the other officials, though eye witnesses claim an assistant referee was subject to the same berating and danger as the head official

Here's an article with video. https://www.sounderatheart.com/2024/11/local-upsl-match-abandoned-after-referee-chased-off-field/

I expect the article is incorrect in saying the referee awarded a win to Sharktopus. He normally would've called it over but couldn't declare a winner.

Breaking: LA Galaxy midfielder Riqui Puig has sustained a torn ACL in left his left knee, the club announced.

Puig injured his knee in the second half of match but continued to play and assisted the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to send the Galaxy to the MLS Cup final.

That's terrible. He's been flat out lighting it up in the playoffs; huge loss for LA. Even as a RB fan, I'd prefer to see both teams to go at it full strength and see who wins.

Guinea raises that ref call "mistake" ... Just awful.

A controversial refereeing decision sparked violence and a crush at a soccer match in southeast Guinea, killing 56 people, according to a provisional toll, the government said on Monday, as a witness described scenes of chaos.

The fatalities occurred during the final of a tournament in honour of Guinea military leader, Mamady Doumbouya, at a stadium in Nzerekore, one of the West African nation's largest cities.

Fans threw stones, triggering panic and a crush, the government statement said, promising an investigation.

A witness who had attended the match said a disputed red card in the 82nd minute kicked off the violence.

"The stone-throwing started and the police joined in, firing tear gas. In the rush and scramble that followed, I saw people fall to the ground, girls and children trampled underfoot. It was horrible," Amara Conde told Reuters by phone.

The crowd rushed to leave, leading to a dangerous scrum at the exits, a police source said.

A video authenticated by Reuters showed dozens of people scrambling over high walls to escape.

Ousted President Alpha Conde said the event had been badly organised at an uneasy time for the country, which is waiting for Doumbouya to hold promised elections after he seized power in a 2021 coup.

"In a context where the country is already marked by tensions and restrictions, this tragedy highlights the dangers of irresponsible organisation," Conde said in a statement.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an official from the city's administration said many victims were minors caught in the turmoil after police started firing tear gas. The official described scenes of confusion and chaos with parents retrieving bodies before they were officially counted.

The bold are "spicy"? City losing to Salford would be, but has City sank that low?

The rest are all cake walks. So why not give the holders/2nd most amount of cup wins and the most cup wins a round 3 matchup.... :lmao:

Spicy maybe not the right term, interesting in terms of big money spinner for the smaller club perhaps

It is pretty cool how the FA Cup works. A club like Accrington Stanley getting half of the ticket sales from the Liverpool game is huge for them.

Accrington Stanley has net assets of around £1.6M. Each game for Liverpool averages £3.1M in ticket revenue. Accrington Stanley, who gets half of that, will literally make enough money to double their net assets in one game. I love it.

If Ipswich ever gets to the Premier League, I'm going to become a die-hard fan. For the one year that they're there, anyway.
This post is more than a decade old and from a previous soccer thread, but I was dead serious. Watched at least some of every Ipswich PL game so far this season.

It's torture at times but I like the fan experience. In American pro sports it's easy to just check out and say wait until next year when your team is struggling. Nice to have a reason to watch until the bitter end.

Big relegation 6-pointer with Crystal Palace kicking off momentarily.

It's such a crazy dynamic in English football. Staying in the EPL for an extra year versus being relegated is huge financially. Those end of the year celebrations for ensuring 17th place are crazy and amazing.

It is even bigger if surviving the drop from League 2 to the Conference, such is the bottleneck to try to promote back out which those watching the Wrexham series would probably appreciate. For maybe the greatest last minute goal ever that you all might not have heard of, stick Jimmy Glass into a YouTube search

I just saw on twitter the official ground breaking for the new NYCFC stadium is happening today. Been such a long haul but they finally got there. Next step is to sell the remaining 10% that the Yankees own of the team.

Google is strange. I've been all over the stadium story... And yet, no update for me in my news feed.

Somewhat related, nycfc2 is going to use Icahn stadium on Randall's Island (in the East River next to Spanish Harlem)... A spot all NYC athlete kids know about.

We finally have a broadcaster for the FBG FFA Soccer thread's favorite tournament, next summers Club World Cup. DAZN will have exclusive world-wide broadcast rights and it will carry the games at no cost to viewers. I suppose the draw is they'll get everyone to install the DAZN streaming app on our devices.

A billion dollar deal financed by the Saudi’s. There is no way this is not related to the Saudi’s wanting to a host a World Cup.

Agreed but I think Saudi Arabia has already secured 2034. It will surely be another winter world cup.

I would absolutely love this, if and only if the referee is all but taken out of it. The refs never count so some sort of clock should be employed from the second the GK catches the ball.

BREAKING: Referees will award a corner to the opposition if a goalkeeper holds on to the ball for too long, under a new system being considered by football’s lawmakers

Rather than just using the existing 10sec rule and awarding an indirect free kick.

Sure.

And I'm sure they'll enforce that one just as well.

this is exactly why a clock is needed.

You watch a TON of soccer and even you think the rule is ten seconds because of how long it takes.

The rule is only 6 seconds and there are a ton of times keepers can almost double this with out the ref even bothering. When was the last time you ever even saw the ref call this even under the most Concacaffy of time wasting?

I've seen reports that refs don't like to call it because of the chaos involved in an indirect free kick in the box. I can get behind giving up a corner instead of the indirect.

But regardless of what they decide, ENFORCE IT EITHER WAY!!!!

Seriously, you would only have to call it a couple times for teams to stop doing it. I think Pickford is still holding on to a ball he caught 3 matches ago.

And I know almost no one cares, but the Club World Cup draw just finished. As hosts Miami FC was automatically in Group A and Seattle in B.
And as little interest as I have in this, there are some interesting matchups. Some big/famous clubs being matched up.

  • Palmeiras (BRA)
  • Porto (POR)
  • Al Ahly (EGY)
  • Inter Miami (USA)

Group B

It would not shock me if the 4th team in that group, which you did not even mention, wins the group. Botafogo just won the Copa Libertadores and are about to win the Brazilian Champion for a double.

To give you an idea of their talent level compared to an MLS team, they signed Almada from Atlanta United. Almada was arguably the best player in the entire league for Atlanta and he is just another guy on Botafogo.

It will be shocking to me if Seattle even gets a point unless they load up this winter. Miami has a better chance due to a weaker group, assuming the old guys stay healthy.

:goodposting: Thanks. Not to familiar with most south American teams outside the big names, so that is kind of where I was going with it. But it will be a big test for them

While I think this tournament causes problems for Euro based players and teams (too many games, no rest, etc) and doesn't have the benefits, it does give a path for some lesser teams to raise their profile. Also getting to see some of these matchups could be worthwhile.

I know its a hated tournament and I agree with all the fixture congestion arguments, but also agree some of these games could be very interesting. We don't normally see these clubs from different confeds playing each other in competitive matches. I think the S.American clubs and especially the players will be looking forward to this. If only Al-Nassr hadn't lost to Al Ain this past March in the AFC Champions league on penalties, we'd certainly have a Messi-Ronaldo game on the docket. As its stands, I'm not sure what else is happening this summer. The women's Euro? Who's watching that? I'm not aware of any other tournaments of interest. Does the USMNT even have any fixtures this summer? I suppose we've earned this after the fantastic summer of 2024.

I would guess some qualifiers with the 2026 WC the summer following? Maybe the Gold Cup (per NR)

And as much as we fans love watching these tournaments (except the CWC) a summer off for the players might not be bad before a WC year.

Agreed a bit of time off would be good for most all of these internationals. Counterpoint is that I'm only concerned with what's good for me and my personal entertainment, and that's more summer football.

True. But just think how much better football would be the rest of the year if the players were given one summer off every 4 years!!!!

Ok, still, I want something to watch! Entertain US!!!!!!

Listening to the radio this morning, they were talking about the possible rule changes being trialed by the England and Italy U21s and how they seem to be looking good.

The first being the change to a corner from an indirect free kick if the keeper holds the ball to long. They made it 8 seconds for this trial but seem to be happy with the results. Refs counting down showing their fingers to the keeper. (Which is what was done when they initially instituted the 6 second rule). Too much chaos for an indirect kick in the box, this may be a good alternative.

The second being a change to the offside rule. The "Daylight Rule" would make you offside only if there was "daylight" between the offensive player and defensive player.
To me this just moves the line from "is his toe off?" to "is his heal on?". Still going to be talking about how they are looking for any inch. At least this is a reason to keep the goal instead of one to chalk it off.
I am conflicted. The spirit is to not gain an advantage. Having a heal keep you on is gaining an advantage. A toe off is not an advantage. Old school "even is on" mentality.
I am not sure how you can calculate it, but I would much rather have it look at the majority of a person being off then a small part being on or off being called.

I agree that it will simply move the "VAR" line and not reduce the splitting hairs issue.

However, the rule change is one of my most wanted because the sport is designed to be almost 100% defender friendly. This rule would give the offensive player a much needed advantage, however small, but not cause scoring to go crazy.

I am hopeful that this rule change could add any where from .5 to .75 goals a game.

I am not a big fan of moving the keeper holding the ball to 8 seconds but if they actually really do count and enforce it, it will still be an improvement since the 6 second rule is completely ignored at the professional level.

Keepers can burn 8 seconds now with the ridiculous "catch the easiest ball ever and fall over to waste time tactic" constantly at the end of games before even getting back up to waste even more time.

It will need very specific info about exactly when the clock starts to avoid the sniper fall.

It should be as simple as when the ref determine the ball is caught and under control. Being on the ground should not effect this judgement IMO

Seems like a whole bunch of pointless crap, just actually enforce the laws as they are and there is no problem
Exactly. It's not like it's a new situation without regulation. They never actually enforced the rule in the first place, so let's try that first before trying something else.

I've been saying for years- as soon as the GK has the ball it should look like a basketball game after inbounding the ball after a bucket with the 10 second back court rule. Ref counts visibly on his fingers so everybody know what's what. 6 seconds later, either the ball is gone or the whistle blows. In the US for college and HS, fans will sometimes scream the count if the other team is bad about it.

You know, I completely forgot there was someone in this thread that was looking to go to City-Forest this past week. If you're still here, did you get in and how did you find it?

Keepers can burn 8 seconds now with the ridiculous "catch the easiest ball ever and fall over to waste time tactic" constantly at the end of games before even getting back up to waste even more time.

It will need very specific info about exactly when the clock starts to avoid the sniper fall.
It should be as simple as when the ref determine the ball is caught and under control. Being on the ground should not effect this judgement IMO
This. It would specifically eliminate Pickford and Emi catching an uncontested ball and then lying down for no reason.
