***Official Super Bowl Game Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Since I'm the only guy who had the stones to predict a Super Bowl for the Bears back in early August, I think it's apropos that I get this thread going now. :lmao:

13 days and 19 hours to go....

182 miles between Soldier Field and the RCA Dome. Has to be the closest proximity ever between two teams.

Baltimore to NY is close, depending on where you measure from.

To be fair Grid, I think you predict that every year.I thought waiting for the NFC Championship was tough. This is going to be excruciating.

No I don't. Just the last two years.

7 seems a bit much.

But the total sounds good since the tiebreaker in my playoff FF league is total points and I picked 48.

That means they are thinking Colts 28-21. Not sure how Indy is going to get 28 points against that defense when Peyton might be on his back most of the game...and I'm a Colts fan!

I think everyone said the saints would do the same..all the so call experts picked the saints..choke on it buddy..da bears... :goodposting:

I don't know what the Colts plans are but IMO Dungy better have them do kick coverage all week this week. Hester will "kill" them if they don't get it together.

This game should be an interesting coaching matchup as each know what the other MIGHT do. It's a great advantage but that's a trap too. Very interesting.

Manning doing all his play changing(or not) and pointing during the no-huddle gives the D time to rest and ruins the point of that IMO.

Dungy's team stunk on D, for the most part, today but otherwise have been surprisingly stout in the playoffs. I'm curious if he can scheme to rattle Rex.

I didn't see all that much of Wayne and Marvin today compared to toher weeks. The Bears better copy whatever BB did there. The Bears can't win a shootout with the Colts.

Both teams two headed RBs and OL play have been very good.

Colts better lock Sanders in a hotel room. That guy gets hurt walking to his car and their D is completely different without him.

Rex just doesn't make them an easy pick any week. I still don't understand what type of blackmail material he has on Lovie or the owner but...there's gotta be better options. The run game and the D are obvious strong points, even the return game but... Rex just makes it hard to predict a win for them each week.

Um, Bri - They made the superbowl. Rex didn't have an interception in the Championship game. Its ok now to say Lovie made the right decision.........obviously, he did.

Congrats to both teams that won today. I think Tony Dungy did a great job coaching today keeping his team in it at halftime making them believe they could come back.

Hey Pat, I'm disappointed the Bears won't get another crack at your squad - we owe you guys... and we're undefeated against you in the Super Bowl.I'd like to hear the Patriots off-season plans. They certainly didn't give Brady much to work with. Reche Caldwell looked like the Patriots answer to Billy Buckner today. Eyes wide open, but played like they were shut.

2 first round picks wont hurt. Chad Jackson needs to step up and hopefully Maroney can come back strong.I was in College during the first Pats-Bears SB and it certainly was a rough day for me then as ####faced as I was so I was looking forward to the rematch. Unfortunately Manning and Dungy spoiled the party. Manning played great and I think Dungy did a nice job coaching right down to not scoring too quickly when they had the ball 1st and 10 at the 11. Many coaches would have thrown the ball there. He ran it 3 times and got it in the EZ using 1 of the Pats TO's in the process.

Bears outright. They have the depth and speed to not only matchup with Harrison and Wayne, but also take away Dallas Clark which is huge. Much better defense and much better special teams, and better run game.

Pats cannot afford to let their top FAs go again. Ontop of that, secondary and receiver help is important also. We'll definitly be back next year, just hope the front office do their job in the offseason.

The Bears can shut down Manning, Harrison and Wayne with two guys: Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. If they're on...the Colts are in trouble. If they're not, the Bears are in trouble.

The Bears were good enough to beat the #1 offense, and they are good enough to beat the Colts too. Manning is a great QB and dangerous in the 4th quarter, it should be a good game.

GO BEARS!!!

So are you saying that, unlike Lovie Smith, you would have made a decision other than stick with Grossman all year? You would have done the opposite of Lovie who sees Grossman play EVERY DAY? What other result would have been better? Personally, I'd love to see Grossman win the SB MVP.

I don't think that the Bears are going to blow the Colts out, but it once again shocks me how ppl are jumping on the Colts bandwagon already ... -7 is a bit much, I thought it may be -4 at most.

This is the way I like it. I hope the Bears stay big underdogs 'til gametime.

I agree ... I don't really see this as a knock on the Bears, but just a good point about predicting the outcome of Bears games. If Rex was a consistent, fairly productive quarterback, it would be much easier to predict Bear wins, but the way he plays so up and down, I never want to put any money on them.Take yesterday's game ... I had no idea who to pick - I could have seen it as a blowout either way. If Rex has a 4 turnover game, the Saints could have won by 15, instead, the Bears play great in all 3 phases of the game, and totally blow the Saints out.

Wheelhouse - Post-season Stats, Info and Tidbits

Heading into Super Bowl XLI

1. Ur-lacking? - Last 6 Bears games, the defense has allowed an average of 23.8 ppg.

2. Rex-n-effect - Believe it or not, Rex's QB rating surpasses Peyton's this post-season. 75.4 vs. 66.8

3. Did you know - Not only is Vinatieri (11/11) and Gould (5/5) perfect on all field goal attempts in the post-season this year, but so is every other kicker. 42/42 total. Wow! :o

4. I sense a pattern here - Peyton Manning was sacked 14 times in the regular season.

Sept: 5 sacks

Oct: 2 sacks

Nov: 5 sacks

Dec: 2 sacks

Jan: .... yep, 5 sacks. ;)

Feb: Wouldn't it be funny if the Bears got 2 sacks against him in the Super Bowl? Yes, yes it would.

5. Just because I like stuff like this - The Colts were led by Johnny Unitas in their only Super Bowl victory right (SB V)? Well actually it was Earl Morrall who replaced an injured Unitas in the 1st quarter that led the Colts to their first and only SB win, but stay with me. Jim McMahon led the Bears to their only Super Bowl victory in SB XX.

OK, so what?

Unitas wore #19, Peyton wears #18

McMahon wore #9, Grossman wears #8

The Colts won their only Super Bowl (SB V) in Miami

Site of SB XLI: Miami.

:tinfoilhat:

6. Not too bad for a guy who was thought to have a torn ligament in his knee in early December: Did you know? Dallas Clark leads all post-season players in receiving yards (281)

Receiving yards:

281 Da. Clark

244 Gaffney

190 Berrian

176 Caldwell

155 R. Wayne

154 R. Bush

Recs:

23 J. Gaffney

17 Da. Clark

16 Caldwell

15 Wayne

7. Here's a shocker - The highest QB rating in the post-season so far is Tony Romo 89.6

8. SB XLI, Run-fest? Post-season rushing averages

CHI: 158.0 ypg

IND: 137.7 ypg

9. Points scored/allowed per game in the post-season

IND: 25.3 points scored avg, 16.0 points allowed avg.

CHI: 33.0 points scored avg., 17.0 points allowed avg.

10. Defense comparison CHI vs. IND in the post-season (2006-2007)

First downs allowed per game:

12.3 IND

16.5 CHI

Total yards allowed per game:

229.7 IND #1 rank

340.5 CHI #7 rank

Yards per play allowed:

4.4 IND

5.2 CHI

If the Colts protect the ball, they will win easily. The only way the Bears will win this game is because the defense's object #1 is not to tackle but to attempt to strip the ball. If it works, they win. 1st guy grabs at the ball all the time, tries to tackle but his main goal is to strip the ball. 2nd guy makes the tackle if the 1st misses. Obviously New Orleans didn't pay attention to that. What a blunder. New England didn't figure that out either on their way to a multi turnover game vs the Bears, as I had predicted. 2 INT's and 3 fumbles. And they still won.

Just a quick reminder also - the last time these two teams played the Colts came to Soldier field and embarrassed the Bears.

I know for a fact the defense hasn't forgotten. Hopefully, without Edge, the Bears can contain the run and deal with Manning differently.

Sooo long 'til gametime. The stadium is about 5 minutes from my house in FLA. Definetely will be tailgaiting. Hopefully a friend will comp me a ticket......

I'm a Patriots fan that grew up with a Dad as a Giants fan.Simms was very good in the 4th quarter. Hostetler was good in the 4th quarter. Brady is HOF caliber. Bledsoe has made his share of dunderhead mistakes that cost "us". Grossman is horrible in the 4th quarter, one of the worst I've ever seen. So naturally I think there's better options.Sure I can roll with Lovie's choice with the first 3 quarters because he's had his share of good moments. But in a fan's world of second guessing coaches, like we all do, I think the 4th Q couldn't be more obvious. To say "it's Lovie's choice" is true but there'd be nothing to debate in the "pool" if we went that route.poorly explained-more often than not you can judge a "good QB" just on his 4th Q stats. it's a stat(or set of) I have always posted on my site for years. It shows some nice info when you think Dilfer? and he won a Supe. Or some other QBs. If Rex wins it'll go against this. No stat or theory is perfect so I'm not saying that won't happen but I put alot of stock in 4th Q stats by a QB.

Sorry Wheel, you missed on this one, old Nate Keading missed a 54 yarder against the Pats that would have sent the game to overtime. Instead all us Charger fans got a swift kick in the jimmies.

Well that's weird - I was going by this site that says otherwise. Now that you say so, I do remember Kaeding missing that FG. Hmmmmmmm

As long as we're tossing around interesting stats, here's one:

The Chargers led the NFL in pts. per game scored with 30.8

Whose 2nd?

The Colts...and the Bears with 26.7 pts./game each.

I think any team with a solid defense and running game like Chicago has a real good chance to beat an offensive "powerhouse" like Indy by keeping Manning & Co. off the field.

The Rex Grossman angle gets played up(lack of consistency) a lot,but if HE doesn't make any big mistakes, the rest of the Chicago team gives the Bears a better opportunity to take home the Lombardi than the "experts" like to give them.

No team in the NFL can win a "shootout"with Indy, but the 2 halves of the Pats/Colts game showed how to/and how not to deal with the Colts better than drawing it up on a chalkboard.

I'm a Pats fan who knows that The Colts absolutely showed why they deserve the AFC Championship, but also realizes that Chicago has better than a "punchers chance" if they can work the clock with the ball control game....

Cundiff missed one in the Bears game also. It was a major factor in the momentum turning back to the Bears.

No the old dude in Tampa did. The Bears actualy only run it about 30% and not as much yesterday.
I believe his name is Monte Kipman, but I could be wrong. And the Bears run a Hybrid of the cover 2. With the speed they have at middle linebacker, and the pressure they are able to usually generate from their front 4, the Bears can run all sorts of exotic coverages the aren't usually part of a standard cover 2.The D is better with Mike Brown also with his ability to support on the run (although I didn't see much of a fall-off last game at the SS position). When Brown and Urlacher can switch as saftey and ML, the Bears can really confuse an offense.

The fall off was the Reggie Bush td. Brown is in they snuff that out for a first down only.

The Bears offensive line needs to follow up a dominating effort with another one. Benson and Jones are pretty damn good at chipping the rush ends/blitzing backers, so I think Rex will have time to set on his bread and butter play action bomb to Berrian. I don't think the Bears will have a problem putting up 21+ points, but on the other hand, barring a huge effort from Alex Brown and Ogunleye, the Colts will be scoring at will as well. The moron on the radio(Cowherd?) who said this will be a boring game is an idiot, this game will have everything fans of the game love.

Yep - one of the best offenses, lead by a marquee QB against a great defense. One of the NFL's founding teams with loads of tradition. Sounds boring alright :goodposting: WTF? Is he Pats fan or a Saints fan?? Doofus.

The Bears were basically everybody's pick as the team they would least like to see in the Super Bowl (especially versus the Pats). I don't get it all. The Bears have been extremely entertaining this year and this Super Bowl has the ability to be a very good game.
