***OFFICIAL***The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion thread (1 Viewer)

I'm on my 3rd character and I wish I had picked a different sign to be born under. I chose Mara's Gift. It's alright but I'm wishing I had picked The Shadow or something.

Level 6 now and feel pretty good about this build. I have magic armor and weapons and finished clearing out that necro dungeon right outside of the sewers. I am thinking that the sneak attacking archer is a bit overpowered. There are very few creatures that can withstand the initial critical shot, followed by a fireball blast.

Moving on up in the thieves guild, but have a ton of quests in the log - gotta figure out which way to go.

In my experience, I have found all of the best equipment randomly dungeon diving. THat is how I got the frost bow and nice stealth armor. The magic sword I got as a reward for a quest. Here is a free tip for anyone wanting to improve their armor skills - find a weak creature like a rat and let it go wild on you - let it keep attacking - you will notice that your health will only VERY slowly go down, which is easily healed with a restoration spell. However, every few seconds, you Light or Heavy Armor skill goes up. When you tire of this, kill the creature and get the armor repaired.

Can any help with the curing of Vampirism? I like the additional stats and skills but cant stand not being able to go out during the day.

For those stealth/assassain types, you will get some pretty killer light armor during a quest. No spoiler, just a lil heads up is all.

So, what is everyone's favorite part of the game, thus far?

Favorite part of game: For me, it's how open-ended the game is and the overwhelming amount of things that you can do.

Least favorite: Encumberance, but it's really not a big issue.

Encumbrance has become a much smaller issue for me, as well. With over 3K gold, you no longer feel the need to drag along armor that weighs you down. What quest are you talking about? I know the DB has some great equipment for that. Is this the one?

Go to Skingrad to the chapel - pray at the altar and get healed.

Just bought this today after perusing this thread yesterday. Haven't gotten through to the point to make my character yet. Liking the sniping thing. Also liking the slash style. Don't know what I will be doing, but destruction and alchemy look fun.

This game is sick.

OK, I have to say this. I have been mainly playing the last few days at work on my AMD 64 3200+, 2 GB RAM and an ATI X850XT. Have not put in much time, but still that is what I have seen. Again last night I played at home on my AMD 64 3700+, 2GB RAM and ATI X1900XT. I cannot say enough how incredibly awesome it looks. HUGE improvement. HUGE. The game is freaking gorgeous with HDR enabled on a high end video card. So, if you are considering what to get, I highly recommend spending a little more.

For my sickly little mage encumbrance is a big issue, but that's partly because I haven't put any points into strength and partly because I haven't found any really good robes yet so am forced into wearing armor. Luckily I have spells that boost my capacity up to ~195 so once I clear out a dungeon it's just a minor hassle to shuttle the crap back into town for resale.

I've just gotten into the spell creation which is pretty cool. I need to get my destruction up above 75 before I can make use of the really devastating stuff but the area effect fireball is very nice.

There is also magic item creation which I haven't delved into yet, but looks like it could be really cool.

Which towns do you need recommendations from to get to the AU?

Do you think I'd see any significant difference if i upgraded from my 6800GT? I'm not really thinking about it, but I think its getting slightly (slightly) dated.

A lot of it comes from the HDR, I am sure. I am running at identical res on 19" monitors, and I believe that the 6800GT does come with HDR capability, so you are probably ok for now.

Hey MC I think you should change the thread title.

Morrowind was Elder Scrolls III

Oblivion is Elder Scrolls IV

Title should read "Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion"

BTW, after reading this thread I will have to go out and get the game :nerd:

OK, then.Yet another BF2 player lost to the world of Cyrill.

Is there some sort of question which is the bigger :nerd: title?
What happens if I'm a Civilization :nerd: and a Oblivion :nerd: ?
 Edit to say I own Civ 3 and 4, but rarely play. However, I own 4 computers that could play Oblivion at decent res and settings AND played Everwars. :boxing:

I had a great battle with an enemy battlemage yesterday.

There was this dungeon that had a water pit in it so that if you fell in, you had to swim a bit underwater to climb out. Well since I'm playing The Apprentice, whose main weakness is against casters, my technique was to lure them close to the ledge and either hope the AI makes them fall in or my zombie knocks them in.

It worked great on the first one... he fell in and a few minutes later I dive in to check it out and he's dead - no breathe water spell aparently. The second one and I exchanged a few volleys of fireball and he finally falls in. So after a few minutes I jump in to check on him and he's still alive and starts swinging at me.

So we're two skinny mages hacking and slashing because there's no ranged casting underwater (not sure if touch spells work, now that I think about it). Well I'm getting my ### handed to me because he's a battlemage and I'm just a pansy mage so I take off and make it to a hallway, summon my zombie to give myself a breather, heal up and recharge mana. Soon the zombie dies and we're back to throwing spells at one another.

The best part of the whole thing was the fireball that killed him landed right at his feet and blasted him up in the air into the ceiling of the tunnel. It was just awesome to see the blast and see him fly up and smash into the ceiling. I can only imagine what it would look like if I had a decent video card.

The ragdoll effects are amazing. One of my favorite things is to stumble across a few deer as I am crossing the countryside and hit them with a fireball. Instagrilled venison.

Even better are the effects with a bow shot. Bodies fly all over. I hit a wolf a few times last night and there were actually blood patches where it had been hit. I knocked him over the hill and down on the last shot. :hot: Had to follow it down for the pelt.

OK, so I just got this game for the 360. I played Morrowind on XBOX for like, forever when I got it, though I never actually finished the main quest. Anyways, my point is that I'm well acquainted with the game and I know basically what's going on. So my question is what should I expect from this game? Just exactly how deep is it? Any cool new features? Is there better NPC AI, etc, etc, etc. Thanks.

I'm level 6. Mostly dungeon diving. I have YET to find a dang magic bow. I'm a bow sniper so this is extremely disappointing.

I can tell you where to find one if you want.

It takes a while but around level 10 or so you'll be finding nice stuff fairly regularly. I'm now level 20 and have several very good items (3000-8000 gold price range). I'll find four or five magic items on every dungeon dive; unfortunately, most of the time it's a heavy mace or something similar that I have no use for. I imagine a meleer at the same level will be pretty happy.I have figured out the magic item creation... it's pretty nifty, but I haven't been able to create anything really uber yet -- I can make around a +8 stat item is all.

On a related note, I just ordered an X1600PRO card... should be here on Wednesday. It's about the best thing I could get as I'm limited to an AGP card. MC, do you think my 350W Antec power supply will handle that or do I need to throw a bigger one in?

I would say you are pobably OK. ATI does power better than NVidia, IMO. I am running an ATI X800XL on a standard 300 or 350 OEM PSU on my home HP and never had any problems.

The radiant AI is quite impressive. Each and every NPC has a 24 hour schedule that varies day to day. Deep? Well, the strategy guide is over 350 pages long, if that gives you any indication. Yeah, me thinks it's worth picking up  -fe

Would this work better as a PC or a 360 game? I should have a good enough machine to run it fine (intel 3.0 ghz, 1 gb ram, decent video card)... Generally I'd prefer to play games on the 360, but is it the type of game that would be more of a hassle to play with a controller?

I had played for a while as a Wood Elf.

Started over as a Dark Elf and changed some of my skills:

marksman, sneak, security, light armor, destruction, restoration, athletics.

Really like this guy. Have been doing some dark brotherhood stuff. That is fun and a good way to get some nice magical stuff. I am only Level 3, but am on the verge of going up again. Just wish I could get some more powerful weapons.

I like the interface on the PC, but I am more of a PC gamer than console. FWIW, I have a 3700 AMD, 2 Gig Ram, and a 7800GT video Card and the deep forests still give me some trouble (running at the highest settings and 1920 x 1200). Otherwise, LOVE the game!!!My buddy has this on the 360 and absolutely loves it. One other thing to think about is that the PC version is mod-able ;)

Where?

Bump.

I started a second character. A dark elf, and she can't find a magic bow to save her ####.
If you ask Mad Cow, he can PM you a good location to get one.Restoration, wish I had made that a Major skill. I have it as a minor but it is far and away the most oft-used magic class I cast. I restore health like a ##### while I run away and set up for the next bow shot.

So does anyone play a melee class at all? I've been trying, but keep getting :own3d: pretty much everywhere I go. I've found that I'm way more successful just holding a block position and zapping some destruction magic. As soon as I try to take an offensive fighting position, I get tossed around like a rag doll. Maybe there's a certain art to it that I haven't picked up on.

I have a melee character. The key is to block, then just after they strike you make a couple swings before they can get their shield up. Then get your sheild up to block again.Rinse. Repeat.

Ooooh, thanks. I don't have a melee character but have to go toe to toe sometimes. I have been getting owned too. Still in that Morrowind I am an invincible God mindset. I'll try this out.

For those that are curious about the location of a magic bow, I have one called the Frost Bow, which does extra cold damage on hit. Better get a couple of varla stones while you are at it, cause I already drained it once and had to find one. Anyhoo, it is west of Skingrad, I believe, in the Cursed Mine, which is a dungeon along the road west. I might be wrong, but if nothing else, the boss in that dungeon has some nice light armor.

I agree. I use it all of the time. Wish I had restoration instead of blade.
