***OFFICIAL***The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion thread (1 Viewer)

Started playing Friday night. Played Morrowind a little in the past, but overall pretty unfamiliar with the game.

Built a Mage with one of the human-type races (cannot remember the name). Joined the mages guild.

Very slow going. I am having trouble getting money.

Doing quests out of the town in the far east (the one with the guy levying the high taxes on everyone).

Explored a few dungeons which was fun.

Question:

Are there penalties for mages wearing plate and or weilding blades? The ability for any Mage to tank seems to run contrary to most all other RPGs.

Yes, Heavy armor can kill spell-casting.

For those that are curious about the location of a magic bow, I have one called the Frost Bow, which does extra cold damage on hit. Better get a couple of varla stones while you are at it, cause I already drained it once and had to find one. Anyhoo, it is west of Skingrad, I believe, in the Cursed Mine, which is a dungeon along the road west. I might be wrong, but if nothing else, the boss in that dungeon has some nice light armor.
Using Varla Stones to recharge a bow is a bit of overkill. As I recall, Varla Stones recharge all of your magic items and therefore can be more useful at higher levels when you've got more crap to recharge. Soul gems work on individual items, so if you've got a few of them it may be more economical to use them rather than a Varla.

Really? I thought soul gems were for capturing souls of creatures you kill and then using that essence to enchant your items.Hmm.

Haven't used either of the 2 varla stones yet, since at the mages guild in either Skingrad or Chorrol is a mage that can recharge.

When you're on your spell selection screen (I think) you'll see something called "Spell Effectiveness" -- a percentage which decreases with heavier armor. I wore light armor for the first 15 levels or so but finally got some decent robes (Mages' Guild quests). Now I use summons so much and just toss in an occassional spell to help out the summons so I don't need armor as much as things that regenerate magicka faster.

Soul Gems are used in item enchanting but they can also recharge an item. Click on the filled Soul Gem in your inventory and it will bring up a list of items that you can recharge. IIRC a lesser gem will restore 150 points a pop and those are pretty cheap/easy to find.

HAving not played the new game yet, I know that in the old game the soul gems were used for both. The only really great soul gems for enchanting were really high end souls (Golden Saint, etc), that could put a permanent enchanment on an item. Use the lesser soul gems to recharge. Use the better soul gems to enchant.....

Dang, I sold a few lesser and petty soul gems to kill some extra weight. :hot:

Generally those gems are empty though. You have to have a soul trap spell cast before you kill a critter and then you get the soul. The easier the critter the less the soul will charge/enchant an item.....On a side note, does this game have those stupid pteridactyl type things that were always dropping out of the sky?

I had played for a while as a Wood Elf.

Started over as a Dark Elf and changed some of my skills:

marksman, sneak, security, light armor, destruction, restoration, athletics.

Really like this guy. Have been doing some dark brotherhood stuff. That is fun and a good way to get some nice magical stuff. I am only Level 3, but am on the verge of going up again. Just wish I could get some more powerful weapons.
I started over saturday as almost the exact same thing! Instead of athletics.. blade.

Level 8 now. Finally found a Marksman trainer, used to its capacity, now hope to find another.

:nerd: 'd it up this weekend, got up to level 16, master of the Fighter's Guild and now just cleaning up some of the quests I got hopping from Town to town. One of the 'smith's has a SWEET battlesword i want to get (19 damage, +15 damage on hit, only downside is its 2 handed).

Pretty sweet so far, i just wish the sword wasn't 15k :( So far I haven't found any really good items which is getting me somewhat worried, and its really driving me nuts when in the middle of battle I lose the 'charge' on a weapon - i haven't tried using a soul gem though to recharge.... interesting :)

I had about 4K gold, but am down to 2K thanks to spending a lot on marksman training. :yucky:

As you probably know, the lewt is scaled by your level. I'm 20 now, so I don't know how good the drops will be for you, but there's a sweet dungeon that might make that sword more attainable -- I pulled out well over 10K in magical items yesterday.***SPOILER***

It's called Crayfish Cave and it's located almost due south of Cheydinhal along the river. There's a screenshot of the map over on the Oblivion cheats forum at Elderscrolls.com if you cannot find it. It's an extensive dungeon, but the encounters are manageable. I think I came across a couple of minotaur lords, but that was about the toughest. I couldn't believe the amount of treasure I kept finding in there. It's worth a trip if you need some gold.

Interesting. I need to go to that city for 2 quests anyway. Might have to make the trip.

A friend sent me some Alchemy great links today. This may or may not ruin anything for you (I don't think it will, but I can't claim the same for everyone). The last one is especially helpful if you have not dabbled in alchemy yet.

Dude, who in Chorrol can recharge? I talked to everyone and couldn't get someone to do it!

Explain capturing souls with sould gems to me like I'm 5, please?

-fe
Capturing a Soul1) Have an empty Soul Gem in your inventory. When you mouseover the gem it will tell you if it has a soul in it or is empty.

2) Cast a Soul Trap spell on the target. Note that you can soul trap your summons as well as enemy monsters and NPCs.

3) Kill target within the time limit of the Soul Trap spell. I think, but am not certain, that if you cast Soul Trap on a summons you have to actually kill the summons to capture the soul rather than just letting the summons spell duration expire.

4) You get a "You have captured a soul" message

Notes:

1) The more powerful the monster is, the more power its soul will have.

2) You can capture a lower level soul in a higher level gem, but the soul will not be at the gem's level, it will be at the soul level. For instance, a Petty soul in a Lesser gem will still have the power of a Petty soul.

3) Not certain about this but I think you cannot capture a soul that is higher level than any empty gems. For instance, you cannot trap a Lesser soul with a Petty gem. I need to verify this, but I think this is correct.

Uses:

1) Recharging magical items. Click on the soul gem and it will bring up a list of items you can recharge.

2) Enchanting items. In the Arcane University is the room where this is done. I think you need to be a member of the Mages' Guild to access this. Click on the device, load the item, load the soul gem, select the enchantments.

Did I miss anything?

Ok cool, thanks. So, if I cast a Soul Trap that has 5 secs on it, I have to cast it then kill it in 5 seconds?-fe

picked the game up on Saturday after my month of business travel.

I picked my race as a wood elf (just like in morrowind).

I also went with a custom Thief/Assassain class. I kept all of the assassian skills but swapped out Mercantile with Illusion.

Mercantile as a skill sucks donkey **** and Illusion makes a nice complement for a Stealth Character.

Have played it for about 3 hours and I am very :excited: with the game so far and look forward to many more hours of playing time ahead.

What's the difference between training skills at a trainer vs training skills in the field?
with a trainer you increase your skills much quicker but you have to shell out a lot of gold to do it.

What's the difference between training skills at a trainer vs training skills in the field?
One you pay for, the other you get from experience (using said skill). No difference between them otherwise.Think of trainers as "cheating" to up your skills, it's not, but you get what I mean.

I am not crazy about it, but it is not too bad. The video card would be scraping the barrel.
seems like a bunch of crap i don't need and a lame vid card...
If you are dying to have someone else make your system, then check out ibuypower.com
i'm just waiting for someone to make this process easier....
Use their configurator to make an AMD 64 system. I would get the 3700+ CPU, at least 1 GB of RAM and consider the 7600 GT video card.

Ok cool, thanks. So, if I cast a Soul Trap that has 5 secs on it, I have to cast it then kill it in 5 seconds?

That is correct.
I'll try this out later. Thanks.-fe
The best thing to do is get yourself a good soul by using the Soultrap spell. Nothing over the top but a pretty good soul. Then take that trapped soul and get youself a good weapon of your specialty. Enchant that weapon with soultrap. Put that weapon You may only have a few charges on it, but what you do is weaken the enemy till it's just about dead and then change weapon to the one enchanted with soultrap and finish the critter off with that weapon. Even if it takes longer than 5 seconds to kill the bad guy, each time you hit him it casts soul trap again so the window is much larger to actually get the kill and collect the soul....As a melee character this worked like a charm. I would keep a glass sword with 17 charges of Soultrap on it. Whenever a Golden Saint would come bounding over the hill I would pound on her with my regular weapon and when she was almost dead I would quick slot to the Soultrap sword. Never had to recharge it because I didn't use it all that often and it would recharge over time by itself....Not sure if this is the case in the new game....

Enjoy gentlemen.....

I haven't been able to play much since my XBOX broke and I have to send it back for repairs but I started out as a Dark Elf in the model in the guide... Basically a balanced character of melee, magic and marksmanship... Does anyone have any experience with the type of character in the guide for the Dark Elf? How does it progress through the game? Any with good suggestions for Dark Elf character? Thanks...

Level 9 and finding magic weapons all the freak over the place. Some very nice warhammers and claymores in an old fort with a lot of dwarven armor if anyone is interested the location, let me know. :nerd:

I have to be the dumbest human being on the planet.

I bought the game, then spent over $500 on memory and a graphics card to play it. Tried to install the game first, only to have the system (apparently) lock up. Mouse wouldn't move, nothing appeared to be happening on the drive. Panicked and restarted the PC. Now all I get is "Catastrophic failure" when I attempt to load it.

There's freakin hundreds of files that have been modified since I started this mess, so I have no idea how to restore back to where I started. Repository files, config files, prefetch files

I need a bigger :bag:

Heres a question.

Im in the wilderness doing a quest. A Bandit Bowman attacks me, and almost immediately 2 Imperial Legion Forresters pop in and start shooting the dude with their bows.

Immediately after he dies, the 2 Legion guys turn on each other, and as I try to attack one of them, I hear "Im on your side". So I go attack the other. Again, "Im on your side". One kills the other and then runs very quickly away into the woods.

One of them likely accidently hit the other one in battle, and the other guy then counterattacked. The guy who ran off was likely in the wrong (in the eyes of the law / bounty) so he ran.

Word of Warning -- I was in a cave (was it called the sideways cave? something like that) and there's a hidden lake in there. Above the lake is another area and I got effing stuck in a little alcove. I walked in to peek around, and I was completely trapped in by hanging vines. It wasn't a trap, it was a glitch in the game. :own3d: :sadbanana:

Luckily I had an autosave not too far back.

I got stuck there too... jumped/jiggled my way out though. cool little starter dungeon though :)

Never did the Sideways cave, personally. I have like 20 active quests as it is, but it is all I can do to NOT jump into every ruin and cave I come across.

WTF? :( I tried for like 10 mins to work my way out and had no luck. For whatever it's worth, I am a tank Ogre with ####ty acrobatics. That may be the difference. Also, I got quite a bit done on the main quest before veering off over the past couple days for caves and sidequests. So, it was only about my 3rd cave but it was cake. Imps are no match for TEH BARZARKING OGUR!!!!11!!!!11eleven

Probably why .. my char is a hybrid breton stealthy/mage (assassin too  ) Technically a healer (kinda regretting that) lots o magiclol at imps v oger too ... i did that cave first thing out of the jail, probably why it meant anything to me... theres a cave with a bunch of vampires outside the imperial city thats kinda rough though, so careful where you poke... :)

btw, its soooo easy to up your stealth and or acrobatics. Whenever I have to walk slowly for any reason, i use stealh and anytime I'm just running around, I'm constantly jumping. looks ######ed, but ups the skills quick

I knew that about acro, but I never think about it. Re: walking around in stealth, I thought you only got +1s if you were actively sneaking around an enemy, not just walking randomly in stealth mode on your own. I may be wrong though.

snuck around almost the whole begining/tutorial/plot device without really realizing it, they suggested one of the theifly classes cause my sneak was so highDont know if that counted as "around enemies" or not though

Also, this was touched on several pages ago, but I never saw anything that made any sense to me. Can someone explain manual lockpicking to me like I am an ADD goldfish? I have the persuasion wheel thing down and this seems way less comlicated than that, but I never ever have manually picked even a "very easy" lock. I do fine with the automatic attempt (I think I am like a level 15 or 17 security).

hit up to flip the "tumbler" up ... it will "stick" in the up position for longer on some "hits", that is what you want -- press A and it will lock that one in place, same thing for the next... if its not up at that exact moment you press A, the lockpick breaks... look for patterns in when it stays up for longerOr just work on the open lock spells :D I find anything higher than average is almost too much of a pain to bother
