Also, this was touched on several pages ago, but I never saw anything that made any sense to me. Can someone explain manual lockpicking to me like I am an ADD goldfish? I have the persuasion wheel thing down and this seems way less comlicated than that, but I never ever have manually picked even a "very easy" lock. I do fine with the automatic attempt (I think I am like a level 15 or 17 security).

hit up to flip the "tumbler" up ... it will "stick" in the up position for longer on some "hits", that is what you want -- press A and it will lock that one in place, same thing for the next... if its not up at that exact moment you press A, the lockpick breaks... look for patterns in when it stays up for longerOr just work on the open lock spells I find anything higher than average is almost too much of a pain to bother

I was completely missing that "A" button part to move to the next chamber/tumbler/whatever its called. I was expecting some sort of reaction just by "tweaking" the first one and I figured I was not even getting step one of it correct. Thanks, I'll try this.

About the getting stuck thing, this has happened to me a few times and I'm a thief/assassain so my acrobatics/agility is high. What I do is "quicksave", load and boom, I can get out.

That has worked for me in the past.

OK, here's the dealio with persuasion.  I have gotten pretty good at it, but it requires a little luck.

There are 4 pies.  Each causes one of 1 reactions with a person.  Figure you can rank them 1 to 4 based on how well they like that pie section.  1 being hate, 2 dislike, 3 OK and 4 awesome.

You HAVE to choose all 4 in each minigame.  The goal is to minimize the amount you will with 1 and 2 and maximize that of 3 and 4.  Now keep in mind that the wheel rotates each time you choose, as well.  I don't know if this is random, or not - never looked a whole lot, but regardless, it changes.  Keeping that in mind, you want to take the lowest hate(1) and the highest awesome (4) as soon as you can.  The 2 middle options don't have nearly as much sway as the 2 extremes, so consider those the flex options and take them with whatever you get.  If you start the game with the lowest on hate, I always opt for that one, then proceed.  If not and the highest one is on love (4), then choose that one.  It is a game of give and take and luck to a large degree.  Once you understand that, it is very easy.

Finally got it figured out. I'm now officially a suave MOFO.

Now if someone could only explain lockpicking to me...

Ok, here is a quick guide for lock picking:Each time you "lift" a tumbler (order does not matter, 1-5), it rises at a different speed, which is random. The slower the tumbler "lifts" the longer it will "stick" in the raised position. When it sticks at the top, click the left mouse button. Sometimes, it will take 8-10 "lifts" of a tumbler to get it to rise slowly. PATIENCE IS THE KEY!!! Sometimes it will "lift" slowly on the first try, but just watch the rhythm of it. If it raises slowly and you wait too long or just miss it and it falls again, keep doing it and it will "lift" slowly again at some point. PATIENCE PATIENCE PATIENCE.

For those that do not know, you do NOT need to D/L FRAPS for fps.

While in game, hit the "~" key (next to the number 1 key, but just hit it, no shift):

then type: tdt

then enter

then "~" again and it will show you your fps in the upper right corner.

Also, you can save your games this was as well and name them as you wish:

hit the "~" button, then type: "save ****" (w/o the quotes) and then after it says saved game or save sucessful or whatnot, hit the "~" button again and continue on.

Lastly, you can not rename saves while in game. After though, you can go into C:/my Docs/games/oblivion/saves and rename them to whatever you want. You can do this regardless if it's "Save 31" or if you named the save in game (ie "Sideways Cave")

I bought the game, then spent over $500 on memory and a graphics card to play it.  Tried to install the game first, only to have the system (apparently) lock up.  Mouse wouldn't move, nothing appeared to be happening on the drive.  Panicked and restarted the PC.  Now all I get is "Catastrophic failure" when I attempt to load it.

There's freakin hundreds of files that have been modified since I started this mess, so I have no idea how to restore back to where I started.  Repository files, config files, prefetch files

Another big help in lockpicking is sound. The tumbler makes a different sound when its going to stick. A fast fall is a "TINK". A slow fall is "tinkTINK". Can make it alot easier if you can key in on the sound. I usually play while watching tv and have a headphone on one ear. My wife hates it when I get to a locked chest, because I usually pause the Tivo so I can hear the lock sounds better.

You do realize you can return it to Best Buy opened, right?

Do a system restore to before the install. I would uninstall the bugger, put in the new hardware and RAM, make sure you have all of the updated drivers, and then install. Probably just a corrupt install, but hard to know. Is it the game that says Catastrophic Failure, or Windows? If it is the game, you need to update RAM and video card, more than likely.

So I am perusing Gamespot this AM looking at all of the releases coming up for the next year, and there ain't much. Of everything, I see MAYBE 6 titles I will possibly get:

BF2: Armored Fury booster pack - LOCK TO GET (April 28)

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter - Pretty close to a lock. Supposed to be the first game out to use all of the new physics cards/HAVOK engine crap/ATI reprogramming its pixels for physics. Already great game for the 360. (May 7)

Timeshift - Lots of hoopla, but don't know much about it. (May 7)

Neverwinter Nights 2 - For the love of Pete, I will own this day 1. (August 27)

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic - FPS fantasy like Oblivion but with the Source engine. Supposed to be very cool with its physics and such. This is a toss-up. (Spetember 24)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - This one will either be cool or absolutely blow. I will definitely wait for reviews, but if it is great, I will bite (Quarter 1, 2007)

What does this mean to me? It means I get lots of up close and personal time for now with Oblivion and BF2.

Yes. They hope to recover the old past glory after the last few debacles in that RPG series. I think Computer Gaming World has a big article on it this month.

Go in and delete the folder it was being installed on, as well as go into My Documents/My Games and delete the Oblivion folder. Reinstall your game after updating hardware and I bet you are OK.

The best is you don't need to buy any empty beakers or be at an alchemy table to do it. I rarely ride my horse anywhere as I'm always collecting herbs. Not to mention the easy money and you can steal ingredients, make potions, then sell them at regular merchants.

Into it big time! Just got the 3rd ingredient on the list level of it (whichever it is... i'm atm) amd have apprentice tools now -- heavy freakin things for a mage to be running around with though. Haven't gotten to poising my weapons, though, despite being an assassin

Click on the potion, it will ask if you want to poison {currently equipped weapon}. Say yes, and that's it, a little green teardrop will show up by the weapon icon on the main screen. Just don't eat rat meat by itself.

Also, am I the only one here who bought the strategy guide? I find myself only using it when I have a question as to whether a dungeon is supposed to be for a quest or not, when I stumble upon a new one, while running from place to place (and picking herbs ). I have found it pretty invaluable...it's over 360 pages though :wow:

I have seen the upgrade sets at stores in the Imperial City. I tend to not buy the strategy guides, since it is too easy to look. I prefer just taking it from the hip, so to speak.

As long as you have sufficient skill (stealth, IIRC) you can auto try --- we had a nice clinic on lockpicking page 14, long and short: press up and if it sticks up press A before it starts to drop. there are clues to when to do it.

Quick question for all. May have been addressed but this thread is to damn long now to look. Where can you safely store items? I found a few that are named, so probably quest items. Odd ball type things. They are to heavy for my wussy assasin to carry around since strength is not a main upgrade for me (I tend to upgrade speed, endurance and agility). Where can I safely leave these things? I have done mage guild quests in Chorrol and Skingrad. I also have a free room in some town where I made them visible again. Are these good places? Or do I need to go back and drop 2 grand on a house? If that's the case, who offered the house? I had the offer but forgot from whom.
