As soon as you can cast invisibility (or make invisibility poitions, that will help too. Hit them till they get close, then invis and sneak away, rinse and repeat.
Good idea. What skill is that, illusion I imagine? I didn't pick that skill. :bag: I chose destruction, thinking fireball/arrow combo. I haven't been real impressed with that so far. That's one of the changes I would make, illusion for destruction.
But isn't it good to frequently use a skill that's not part of the set that will level you up? I never choose long blade simply because I use it all the time.

Are you going fireball arrow or arrow fireball? I'm thinking the latter would be a fairly potent combo with the sneak bonus. You cannot have enough destruction, IMO.

I've pretty much given up on this character. I can't even walk between villages after dark without dying. I just tried the quest where you jump in to the painting and could not kill a single enemy, yet alone defeat them all and get the painter out. I've determined my guy is pretty much a lost cause at level 9.

Need advice. Are people messing with the difficulty setting at all? If not, then can someone suggest a character that is working well? Though I like a challenge, constantly dying is about to place this game on the "forget about it" shelf in my cabinet.

Yeah, I'd say you need to remake; you shouldn't be getting killed on a regular basis. You probably levelled too quickly due to advancing in non-combat skills.

BTW, where does it show you hours played? I'm almost scared to look. :bag:
Well, I'm playing a thief/marksman type character and those are the stats I've been building. I only fight with a blade when forced to. Guess I just need to be more patient with the hit and run tactics. Can take forever but I guess I'd better get used to it. I have no desire to start over. This is the character I wanted to play. I could do a little better in selecting skills but not a lot.
Once you have marksman up a bit, you can zoom when you have an arrow knocked, which will kepp you farther away to begin with. Sneak will help too, once you start getting the damage bonus for them not being aware of you. The thief/marksman has kind of a steep curve at first. Getting used to the firing while running away is a good idea too, since you'll be doing a lot of it. As soon as you can cast invisibility (or make invisibility poitions, that will help too. Hit them till they get close, then invis and sneak away, rinse and repeat.
When leveling a archer type character, it is important to up your agility skills at every level up becuase this stat determines the damage done by your bow. :D

A couple of notes for all of you:

I am a member of all 5 guilds (Arena, Thief, DB, Mage, and Fighter) and no conflict as of yet (3/4 thru Arena, a good bit into DB and Thief, and just beginning the other two).

As far as thief/archer/assassain, I love my build. I'll post it when I get home tonight, if you guys want, esp. Loke.

I am in 5 too. Arena, Thief, DB, Mage, Blades. No conflicts yet. I am almost all the way through the DB and MAges. Done with Arena other than the weekly matches..

there should not be conflicts with all the guilds. Never ran into problems with Morrowind with joining all the guilds. Besides you can't kill a person central to the storyline. You will just knock them down but they won't die.

Level 7 only. Can't do much because I get my #### handed to me. For instance, tried the goblin cave near Chorrol. Can't even beat the two sentries outside the cave! I hate the thought of having to restart so I can upgrade "smarter."

look at your list of saves autosave entry when loading a game. Thats where is on the 360, anyway.
Crap, I knew I didn't want to know. 45 hours. Some people could probably make good, productive use out of 45 hours. Not me though.

have you played RPG's before Oblivion?

have you played RPG's before Oblivion?
Me? Yes, many. Baldur's Gate and BG2, Planescape, Icewind Dale, Bard's Tale, Morrowind. Probably others I don't remember off the top of my head. I much prefer turn-based combat to real time.

:nerd: Well.. I'll tell what I've done... mostly happy.. First the levels go up.. with each 10 points your major skills go up in total... So I tried to get a balanced character with offsetting magic/stealth/combat... so I tried to mix it up.. so starting points were as LOW as possible... I think the Max level is 50..

Second.. I put things I'd use alot.. Athletics/Acrobotics (maybe a mistake cause these take forever to increase in game play) etc.. in secondary skills.. because these do affect your total points at Moving on Up Level time.. 10 points raised = 5 points of a skill.. IE 10 minor destruction ups.. = +5 willpower, 5 points = +3.. not sure where the 2, 4 breaks are... think 3, 8..

Third.. I tried to always, always.. train a minor skill each level... This means guarnteed points in said skill.. at level up..

Is working more or less for me.. mostly tankmage.. Majors: Light/Heavy (so I could switch out sets. and control leveling), Blade, Destruction, Resoration, Marksman, and Mystycism..

I'm not sure when access is available. maybe right away.. I didn't try till I was in the Academy.. but making training spells.. that affect something. .(you most of the time).. makes raising Magic Skills.. very easy...

Also.. The only way to raise Luck is on leveling.. I recall significant success in Morrowind.. with luck higher than 50.. but have not bumped mine yet.. regretting it.. looks like I can max out.. everything but luck...

Don't give up Loke..

I have put my thief guild quests on hold and now focusing on the dark brotherhood quests for a little while. I like focusing on two guilds and alternating them every few quests to keep things different/fresh.

With my assassination skills the dark brotherhood quests are rewarding.

It was funny. For the first DB quest you have to kill the captain of the pirate ship in the waterfront. getting to him was a piece of cake because earlier in the game I trespassed on the ship making the pirates charge after me. The imperial guards walking the docks came over and killed all the pirates. This made this much easier when the DB quest came up :D

Just got my armorer skill up to 50 tonight. GB being able to fix magic items. I spent a good amount of time enchanting my gear after that.

HOLY CRAP this game is beautiful.

As you may recall, I upgraded from a barely-playable FX5200 to an X1600PRO video card. Well I had screwed around with the .ini file to squeeze every last drop out of that 5200 and when I upgraded, although most of the settings improved dramatically, I was still missing something. Anyway, tonight I finally finished setting everything up on my machine and I got the .ini basically back to the default and WOW!!! I cannot believe just how impressive the visuals are. Awesome.

Ok, Loke, here is my "main" (starting stats):

Custom Class: Quiet Death

Race: Wood Elf

Sign: The Thief

Health: 80

Magika: 80

Fatigue: 165

Str: 30

Int: 40

Wil: 30

Agi: 65

Spd: 65

End: 40

Per: 30

Lck: 60

Main skills:

Blade

Alchemy

Illusion

Light Armor

Marksmen

Security

Sneak

I love this guy. I can open any lock with 1 lockpick (at most 2 if I get impatient). I get x3 Dmg when I hit with my arrow while sneaking. I can sneak silently past damn near anything. I can usually handle any 2 mobs attacking me at once, usually. I am grateful that I chose Blade as one of my mains as I'm having to use it more and more as I level up, but when sneaking, I poison an arrow and make it to where 2 poisoned arrows (one with sneak) and a couple of chops with a blade and most mobs are toast.

At Level 13 here are his main stats:

Str: 54

Int: 51

Wil: 50

Agi: 86

Spd: 83

End: 43

Per: 31

Lck: 60

Couldn't be happier, but really trying to up my magic and blade mainly right now.

Hope that helps!

Start working on his combat skills and don't sleep for a while.

That's great... I was walking to my shack the other day and a guard walked onto the boat. There happened to be another guard near by and they wasted those guys. I watched and picked up the goodies. :D

The game's playing with my head now. Last night I was trying to climb that mountain outside the witch's cabin (which is no picnic). I look up and some guy sprints across my field of vision and disappears behind a rock. I spent the next fifteen minutes sneaking around the hillside, expecting that SoB to stab me in the back any second.

Never saw him again.

Main skills:

Blade

Alchemy

Illusion

Light Armor

Marksmen

Security

Sneak
Very close to my character. The main difference as I mentioned earlier was I have Destruction rather than Illusion. I think that having the ability to go invisible and escape when necessary is key. And destruction really hasn't served me that much anyways.

Not so. I have the SAME main skills except I have Destruction instead of illusion and my guy freaking kicks skippy. I love building up the destruction just for the fun of it.

Wow, glad im not the only one this has happened to. I saw a guy fly across my field of vision wearing a grey robe once. The next thing i knew, my horse (shadowmere) appeared. May have been just a coincidence that my horse appeared after the streaker, but im very curious of who that streaker is.

High Elf under The Apprentice birthsign.

My skills are:

Alchemy

Alteration

Conjuration

Destruction

Mysticism

Restoration

Mercantile

If I wanted to remake this guy, I'd probably swap out Alchemy and Mercantile for something more useful as I really don't use any potions or poisons with all my Magicka and I haven't really found Mercantile to be a great boon. Otherwise, as a spell thrower/summoner he's pretty much unstoppable. The only things I really fear are lichs, and those are dealt with by summons easily enough.

Maybe I just suck then. All I know is dying is getting old.

Where do you enchant gear at?
Arcane University
I assumed this, but what part?
Can't remember the name, but it's on the right hand side of the semicirle of buildings in the U. It is also the same building where the guy makes you your wizard staff.

Gotcha. Corpsarium or something like that, right? Thanks

Right now I am a level 11 Breton with all magic skills except conjuration is replaced by blade. I believe my magic skills are all at like 50-55 except for Illusion which is at 40. My blade is at 30. My Int is around 74, Willpower like 80, Endurance 65ish and the rest are more or less default. I haven't done much except a few recommendation quests and running around spelunking and killing creatures. I have been trying to get my indurance up with the +5 multipliers but it is getting harder now since by doing so I have got my Heavy Armor up to 32 and Block up to 40 so they don't level up as easy now to give my endurance the level ups. Armorer is at like 19-20 so I am able to get that up somewhat easy as long as I have things to fix. I would say that I am fairly strong for my level. I have been leveling up smartly and putting most of the work into endurance to max my health out. It will be fairly easy to level up Speed and Agility when I want to by just using a bow, sneaking, running and jumping. I have them as minors so they don't affect my leveling.

Anyone know where I can train up in Armorer, Block and Heavy Armor? Looking for a trainer for quick leveling. I have maxed out the 5 levels I can get on Armorer at the place in Imperial City and now sit around 20 so if anyone knows where I can find some trainers to level up past 20 in Armorer, 40 in Block and 32ish is Heavy Armor would help. I would also like to find a trainer for Blade. Trying to keep my skills all fairly equal so I don't outgrow levels to fast.

On a related note, Alchemy is quite a fruitful skill. Easy to level and allows for easy money. Just go around picking so flowers, getting some apples, wheat, flour and stuff. Make like 20 potions of various degrees, mostly restore fatigues. Sell them for like 10-20 bucks each. Make a quick 400 or so bucks. Be careful not to power level the Alchemy to high though or you will level up to fast while your combat skills stay low, like destruction and stuff.

OK, thanks to those who recommended that I go back and get the diary from the haunted Anvil house, that was my problem. I read it but must not have kept it on the first pass through. So, I got homeboy to come back and remove the curse. Went to finish the quest off by waking up Grandpa bones in the crypt down there and holy sweet ####### ####. He ####### HOUSED me. Thats the first time in this game I've been smacked around like a child. I'm went back to the last save and let him be. I'm going let him keep sleeping for a while....

Also, I joined the DB and got lockpicks and some sneaky shifty skills from the light armour they give you. I finally got into the Mages Desk to get the black soul gems to get the letter of recomendations. I progressed along that path last night, working on recomendation letters to get to the Uni.

How many do you need total? I think I have 5 now.

Ian,

a great way to level up your armour is go to the fighters guild in anvil. Your first quest is to find out what is killing this lady's pet rats in her basement. Once you do that, punch the rats or do a minor attack but dont kill them. Once you hit each of them, they will all start attacking you. With all 5 attacking you at once, they do minimal damage but each one counts as a "tick mark" for progressing your armour skill. Do that while waering whichever armour you want to level up, and do it for as long as you want. Also, hold your shield out while they attack you -- following the same procedure you can get your block skill up nicely. It's kind of a cheesy way. but it works. they Rat attacks will hurt you slowly, so hopefully you have some sort of "heal self" potions or spell you can take there so you can hang our for as long as you want.

That guy is a *******. My strategy to beat him involved running away from whatever he summons (headless zombie or faded wraith) in a circle, constantly healing myself. Everytime I can around the circle Id smack him a few times with my sword before the summoned creature could hit me.

After I got him down to about 1/3 of his health I just went after him and beat him to death.

Im up to lvl 17 now, and I can say for sure that other than the Will-o-the-Wisps and Grave Zombies(both of which are nearly impossible for me to kill), he was the hardest challenge in this game.

The house is pretty sweet though after you beat him.

Just go otuside a city's walls and count the red arrows on your compass when you have the quest active.

Just checking in after my first try. Up to Level 2, and have finished a couple of dungeons (Sinkhole & Doze-something or other) and one fort (Fort Empire). I'm pretty much just wandering around the lands and just discovering stuff for now.

Should I put the guilds in any order when I join them? As in, is it more advantageous to join some before others???

doesn't matter as far as how the gmae plays out, just depends on what you want to level up first with. You can join them all and then take turns on their missions....At this point, I think that wandering, dungeon/cave plundering, and figthing random attackers / animals is a good plan

Might need to go buy that house in Anvil, then. 5K is a steal for a good house.
Definitely, especially since its already furnished. I bought a much smaller house in Cheydinall for 7k, and then had to pay nealry $2k per room to furnish it. Its a quest though to fully furnish it, so Im a little worried that once I do get it fully furnished something is going to happen to it.

I haven't done much exploring yet - just working through thief guild and the DB. What large town is Anvil located near? I am seeing a lot of talk about Anvil and I want to check it out for myself tonight.

PS - Is there a way to zoom out the map on the 360 version? Its not a major deal but just a pain in the butt to scroll the map around in that fixed view.

Bottom left of the map near Kvatch

Anyone been in a tomb with Varla stones that fire snowballs at you? I couldnt take them out of their holder, and they constantly shot a cold spell at me. Seemed odd.
