I have 1 question about leveling. I kind of understand the concept of improving your minor skills to improve your modifier for each governing attribute. However, what is the plan when all of an attributes' skills are major?

Using my pure caster mage as an example, if I decided to improve Strength in a level, would I increase Blade 10x, then use Intel. based spells 5x and Will. spells 5x to ensure that the 3 attributes increased by +5?
I'm not sure I understand the question exactly. But increasing any skills (major or minor) with the same attribute 10 times will ensure the +5 modifier. Increasing ten MAJOR skills will allow you to level up. But in your example, you would have only increased willpower and intelligence only 5 times each, which will only get you a modifier of 2 or 3. So you would need to increase them another 5 times each. Remember, you can level up when you increase your major skills 10 times. But you don't HAVE to level up. You can weight to sleep until you have all your modifers at +5.
That's incorrect. Once you level up the new skills you level up in after getting the message telling you to sleep count towards your next level up. So you can't just put off sleeping to get +5 modifiers in every category. Once you level up from the message, the modifiers are locked in and the new points gained go towards your next level up. I am positive on this.
This is true.

Yup.. I learned this the hard way. I snuck around everywhere for an hour real time to get sneak to 100. The next few times i slept I had +5 on agility and nothing on the others. :(

After a long day of plugging away at this, I just completed the Dark Brotherhood mission. Very cool stuff there.
 fellow ListenerShadowmere = :moneybag:
So whats the bonus with Shadowmere? doesn't seem any faster than the black horse I dropped $5K on a couple days ago. Sure wish I had waited. :wall:
IIRC, Shadowmere is the fastest horse in the game and is also a central character to the game so the horse cannot be killed just knocked out. If you read my post a few days ago regarding Shadowmere. If you are able to knock the horse out, it turns into a body so you can add stuff to the horse while it is knocked out. Shadowmere can take hold a lot of items so you have a traveling chest with you at all times. If you need something just knock her down again and get the item back.Plus Shadowmere has red eyes which look cool :nerd:
I remember reading that post but I didn't understand. How much can she hold? Also, Won't she ever run away if you start wailing on her?

For those who have the 360 version:To increase the sneak skill go into a store in the Market District and go up stairs. At the top of the stairs, just sneak and I tied the 2 analog sticks on my controller together and went and got something to eat. Works very well and doesnt tire the hand.

I'm not sure I understand this. But what you are saying is, since the last time I upgraded I was eligible for another upgrade, my stats are already locked in for that upgrade?

Have you guys seen that cheat/bug where you can fire an arrow into the ground and it will duplicate any item in your inventory? (that was the condensed version). I tried this last night 'cause I was bored trying to find the last two sprigs of garlic for the vampirism cure. Suddenly I was standing in a garlic patch.

For the hell of it, I tried it with the one Varla stone I had in my inventory. This took place at night in the game. Sproing! It was like standing in the middle of a christmas tree. Varla stones everywhere! :excited: I couldn't carry them all.

Of course, I'm just saving them for emergencies... :bag:

Yup. The 3 times i slept after I jacked my sneak up, were +5 for agility and nothing else.

Well crap, that sucks. I have a +3, +3 and a +2 stored up so I guess that's what I'm stuck with.

Little note:

For those that have not done the Sideways cave (no quest, come out of the sewers and turn 90 degrees to the right and up in the rocks), DO IT! The reward is one of the handiest items in the game. ;) Finally found where I had gotten it previously.

-fe
The only good loot I found in the cave was a burning dagger... Is that what you were referring to?
***MINOR SPOILER***The item is an amulet that is permanent Night-Eye. A MUST HAVE for dungeons and for those of us with "darker nights" mod. Forget the name of the amulet, but it was in the sideways cave in one of the ayleid casks.

I never found that and I've done the Sideways cave with a few characters. I found a ring with that property, not in Sideways Cave though.

I am pretty sure a lot of loot is randomly determined. The only set things are usually quest items and armor/weapons that bosses use.

I guess here is my thought about exploits, such as tying sticks together and leaving or firing arrows into the ground.

Save yourself some time and just go into the console and give yourself the extra sneak "modpcs sneak 20" gives 20 more sneak for instance, or player.additem itemcode numberofitem for your free stuff. It is the same thing. For some reason, though, using exploits must help people feel better about not entering cheat codes.

Honestly, I agree with you here. I was just trying to get two friggin' sprigs of garlic and get on with the **** game. That vampirism is a PITA. An annoying quest to get rid of an annoying condition is just annoying.

have we found some way to enter codes with the 360 or are you leaving us out again?

so i plugged into the component connection on my hd "ready" mitsi...

video was good...

then moved the 360 plug in over to hd version...

wow...

then today i moved the plugs from component to dtv...1080i....WOW...

dl'd the pgr demo while i was home and ran thru it once....SUPERWOW...

can't wait to get home tonite and delve back into oblivion...

prolly never get out of the tutorial dungeon...

loFl

That would explain it then. And yeah, my bad, it's a ring, not an amulet, sorry. At work, so didn't have it in front of me.-fe

Can any one explain the soul gem to me? How do you get souls on the gems? Does enchanting a weapon with a soulgem that has a greater amt of souls improve that weapon greatly?

Honestly, I agree with you here. I was just trying to get two friggin' sprigs of garlic and get on with the **** game. That vampirism is a PITA. An annoying quest to get rid of an annoying condition is just annoying.
For quite a while i hated Vampirism. I have already posted several time on this thread asking how to rid of the disease. After about 10 hours of gameplay later, im glad to have vampirism. The ONLY downside of the disease is you can really rest too much. But instead of resting, i travel large distances to eat up the time. For those who hate that the Sun eats you up: just feed off of someone (i found the beggars @ the Waterfront of the Imperial City to be the easiest and msot acessable). Once you feed off of someone, you will not be affected by the sun or will your personality be drastically drained to the extent in which no one likes you. As long as you dont sleep/rest you will never progress futher into vampirism.

At the basic first level of vampirism:Fortify Willpower 5

Fortify Speed 5

Fortify Strength 5

Fortify Sneak 5

Fortify Mysticism 5

Fortify Illusion 5

Fortify Hand to Hand 5

Fortify Destruction 5

Fortify Athletics 5

Fortify Acrobatics 5

Resist Disease 100

Resist Normal Weapons 5

Resist Paralysis 100

The most useful part of being a vampire is a spell (cost no magicka) that allows you to see in the dark and see all those of life around you for 30secs. Very nice about for caves/dungeons, etc.

I just got it for the first time tonight  If you never sleep, you never level up, no?

if you don't sleep you can't level up.If you contract Vampirism you have 36 hours to cure yourself before it is permanent.

I've already got it full blown. Working on a cure now. Suck.

You can sleep with vampirism, itll just make the disease progress to the next stage. You can always feed off of someone and go back to the first level of vampirism. This isnt a PITA like everyone is making it to be. I seriously  vampirism.

I just found a storyline/workflow bug in this game. I needed to go to Skingrad to see the count to get cured for vampirism. The HNIC in the Uni tells you to go there. Well, there's also another quest where he tells you to go there to get some book as a mages guild quest. I hadn't done that yet. Oblivion screwed up the two storylines and they got intertwined / broken. I was stuck waiting in the courtyard for the count who would never show up. I hung out all day and everytime I talked to his Argonian assistant, I just got a "please wait in the courtyard, the count will be right down." He never appeared.

Oh well, I went back to a savepoint where I am not a vampire -- I guess the net effect is nearly the same.

Anybody do the quest where you have to find out who stole the missing painting? I was :wall: on it for at least an hour last night. I finally just gave up on it.

Stole a painting, or finding a missing artist? The latter quest was a bear - I had to revert to a save and walk away from it.

Yes, I finished it. What question do you have?

Stolen painting. Finding the artist was pretty cool, plus you got some cool alchemy ingredient from the inhabitants of the painting.

I interviewed all the people, found the paint supplies in the mage's room, then found the painting in the basement of the west tower, but I still don't have enough evidence to accuse either the mage or the drunk. I've walked all over that GD castle and looked in every crate, sack, and chest I could find but I'm not finding any more evidence. :wall:

Go into the dining hall and look on the floor. Had to cheat to complete this as well.

Alchemy question. Never used this skill before but am trying it out now. I know there are 4 alchemy devices. Do you need to have all 4 in your possesion to max out the effects of the potion? Or does it only use the "best" piece you have? I've been lugging all 4 around and wonder if it's necessary for my wussy strengthed wood elf.

There's 4 pieces:Mortar/pestle

Calcinator

Alembic

Retort

And there are several levels of each (novice, apprentice, journeyman, expert)

So, make sure you're carrying one of each, with only the highest level of each. Ex, if you have a Novice mortar and a Apprentice Mortar, get rid of the Novice.

You can make potions using as little as the M&P but the other 3 devices will help to make you potions stronger/more effective.

So, if this is something you want to improve at, carry the higest level item of each of the 4 hardware pieces.

played for about 4 hours last night after i ran to wal mart for a pair of wireless headphones...

incredible game..

i'm really just wandering around right now, not really going anywhere..

i ended up in the city only cuz i tried to pickpocket a guard...

i did go into an abandoned house and found the dark brotherhood hideout, but turned around at the door with the question...

when i left the starting area, the guard said i looked like a bard, so i just kept the class...figured wth, i'll give it a shot...

the bandits across the water hammered me..

also a couple of other places i realized that i would never be able to kill the couple of people i ran into, so i backed away...

not really sure what i should be doing at this point, just enjoying the game world...

if you're just starting out, go explore the world. Hit the caves and mines for loot and battles for improvements to skill.

^^^ good advice -- and pick on small animals and goblins when starting out. if you plan on melee, learn to block quick -- it helps. if you like da magicka, get a couple decent damage spells quick, along with a couple buffs (shielding spells are key at early levels) and a heal. No matter what your class, sneak is your friend! Welcome to the first of many missing hours :D

ran into some woman down in some "dungeon/cave" type area, she was a magic user of some sort, but all i could do was knock her down unconscious...

i did get some +4 sneak attack when i would hit her after she was unconscious though...

If they won't die, then they are a plot piece of some sort. Good thing you can make people like you again :D

ran into some woman down in some "dungeon/cave" type area, she was a magic user of some sort, but all i could do was knock her down unconscious...

i did get some +4 sneak attack when i would hit her after she was unconscious though...

just to expand, it means that later they play an integral part of some quest or plot turn. This is a big step up from Morrowind, which would just give you a big "YOU JUST ####ED UP YOUR GAME BY KILLING THIS CHAR" message.

never played an elder scrolls title before...

just nwn and guild wars...

i guess the reason i got into battle with her was because i was practicing with the bow, trying to do some damage before she ran over and crushed me...

how often do you guys save..

i am so worried i will get attacked that i am saving after i do a few minor things...

prolly normal till i get my battle skills up some...

It autosaves nearly everytime you fast travel, sleep, wait, or get a "loading" screen (note this is different from the brief "loading area" message, it does not autosave on these), which is handy. If you're doing a lot of walking around in the open world, you may want to save every 10 or 15 mins.
