I never was able to play the game past the tutorial, so have little background here. But WOW I am very impressed with these first two episodes. The tension in every scene is exhausting, but this is so well done so far. I hate zombie movies -- never watched The Walking Dead -- but this just feels different. I want to know more about what happened the last 20 years though.

I have zero knowledge of the game but I’m a fan of the first 2 episodes. Zombies aren’t my thing. Never made it past season two of TWD.

A pretty good intro. Personally was hoping for more build up when the fungus / disease was taking over and how people survived but it just jumped the 20 years so fast.
Thats exactly what happens in the game. The story is not about the fungus. The story is about Joel and Ellie.
I get that they are doing it like the video game. I haven't played it so going in blind and was enjoying the build up, was hoping that would last longer.
"How exactly did society fall apart?" is an overlooked niche in an otherwise saturated genre. I know one of the Walking Dead spinoffs did this, but nobody remembers those so you could start with a blank slate if somebody wanted to blaze a trail here.
"You yada-yada'd the best part!"

Post Apocalyptic / Survivalist junkie here

Not a gamer dork 😜 so didn't even know this was a game before I saw show teasers.

I'll give it a 8/10 so far (very good)

Also wish they had provided more detail on the actual collapse but also understand they're following reference material.

Enjoyed the level of detail on SHTF stuff. How communication happens, for instance.

It's must-watch for me thus far. Hoping it doesn't jump the shark too soon.

So play the game first ,then watch the show ?
or
Watch the show, then play the game ?
I don't think you have to play the game to enjoy or understand the show.
I would agree, they are following the storyline pretty closely so far. A few minor changes but nothing that is a major departure yet. They have added more nuggets in that were only hinted at in the game, such as the scene at the beginning of episode 2 showing us some of the origin in Jakarta. I read an article that there will be a flashback scene in a later episode they wanted to get in the first game as a DLC but it never got fully realized.

Liking it so far and I think they said it’ll be a 3 season run so I’m locked in to finish it all. I really liked the Jakarta expose and the professor. When she said what to do, the tension was great. Honestly, I think that could have also been a great start for episode 1 after the science talk show. I get that they wanted to discover it happening before telling you and it was a cool nod to the radio talking about Jakarta. Worked either way.

Good second episode. Nick Offerman always awesome so looking forward to that.

So the little girl got bit again in the museum? Is that right?

It’s pretty good. Watching the after show commentary was hilarious how they acted like putting hen of the woods on their faces was some creative epiphany.

Wife doesn’t normally like zombie/horror stuff so I’m IN just because she’s IN so far.

I'll give it another episode or two but I don't think I'll make it all that far with the show.
Played the game, and watching the show. in the middle of the 2nd episode, and all i have to say is i am super impressed. So used to great books/video game adaptions being total letdowns but they did this one great. the visuals look so much like the game that they can twist the story a bit, and it will still be great because of how great the visuals are

came to say to stick with it though. It is funny when i played the game it took me awhile to get through the 1st one because it was so boring in the beginning. Similar to the slow roll out with the story here, but it will pick up and the pay-off is worth it. just brace yourself because there is a twist or 2 that comes in the show that hit me hard when playing the video game. can honestly say it was one of the few ties in recent memory i had an emotional reaction to a game.

so i would say stick it out. maybe skip a few episodes and then binge a few in a few weeks. just make sure you get back before the last 2-3 episodes

i have faith it won't. they seem to be following the story with a few tweaks and i don't think we have to worry about any kind of Walking Dead milking it dry to get every penny they can from it.

great question. i mentioned a bit ago, but the game hit me emotionally with one or 2 of the twists it had, and i can't remember the last time that has happened. but the game can take some time. what is good, is since they say it may be a 3 season run, maybe start the game after season 1? or better yet you could probably play the game along the same timeline as the show....

Did anyone else think that the woman in the show was Carrie Coon?
I had to check imdb. This one is Anna Torv from Mindhunters

For some reason I initially thought it was Laura Prepon, only because she looked familiar. Took me a few minutes to realize it was Torv.

Enjoying this.
Never played the game.
Just watched e2 with my son, he had already watched it and has played the game.
A couple goofy observations that didn't ruin the show for me but still...
I mentioned to my son that I would have grabbed extra weapons-ammo-grenades in the museum. He said as a game player he was surprised too.
All you need is a spark, right? Why not just hold the lighter near the floor? Could have avoided that gross make out scene.

I knew I liked her from somewhere, but I couldn’t figure it out. Then I looked it up and it was Mindhunters. Liked the show the first season, then it disappeared for a while, then by the time it came back, I was on to something else

Get you have to suspend some disbelief for this genre, but how would the old lady neighbor in episode 1 get infected before any of the other people in her house? Would assume she would be watched carefully when leaving the house.

Thanks! I appreciate the pep talk to keep going. Like I said, I was going to give it another episode or two but I'll try to give it more time if it still hasn't hit me yet. I am a huge fan of the genre.

It does make me want to really play the game though! Seems like it would be more intense than the show, which is usually the case for me. Although I haven't played any games in years.

They said she goes to the city for doctors visits. Also, possibly something with the food she ate and infected flour.
I didn’t pick up on it but read in an article interview after the 2nd episode, they intentionally left quite a few hints on the flour thing (and the flour mill is obviously mentioned in the Jakarta flashback. Jakarta has one of the largest flour mills in the world.) Joel and Sarah talk about making pancakes for breakfast to celebrate his birthday but they are out of flour. Sarah passes on cookies offered by the neighbor. Joel forgets to buy the birthday cake. I think there were other references to flour in there too that Joel, Sarah and his brother avoid during that final day but would have to watch again.

The neighbor was feeding the old lady dumplings or bread or something, it’s not a stretch to think her being older and already weak that she succumbed quicker. It being spread via flour also would explain why so many people got sick around the same time.

That was a great episode. As someone who didn’t play the game, it was helpful to hear “the making of” discussion by the creators talking about what was and wasn’t in the game.

Aside from the excellent story across the different timelines, it also gave some nice background to the cause and spread of the disease as well as the quick downfall of society.

Well done.

Really? They made an entire episode about a minor character. Frank was already dead in the game. It didn't further the story at all. I suppose everyone is afraid to criticize it because you'll be painted as homophobic. I couldn't care less. It was a throwaway episode that did absolutely nothing. Hated it. Waste of a week.

I agree, really weird episode for me. It did not need to go that deep into that backstory. It just kept going on and on and on. I was like can we get back to ellie and Joel please. And I thought they did it a disservice with ellie not meeting Bill at all. That was good character development in the game. And oof for having a filler episode this early in the adventure. Entertaining? Sure. But definitely irrelevant. And another big oof on that awful flaming fence scene....

The episode went off the rails for me when Bill didn't put a bullet in the head of the stranger in his hole. The guy was thriving in this new solo society he built for himself. No effing way he jeopardizes that by either inviting someone in or letting them walk away to tell others. He clearly had no remorse killing either zombies or humans alike with the contraptions he set. And since they made an entire episode from that decision moment on, it really seemed like a wasted one since I couldn't envision any of that happening.

There was a little too much "romance" for me and Bill a bit too much of a superhero, but this was in no way a wasted episode. This is a drama, not the video game. We can't just have hours of shooter gameplay. I thought the acting was amazing. The background given and humanizing of the pandemic and time passing was stellar. This episode will win an Emmy.

I kinda liked the episode but agree on the lovey dovey stuff. I get you're painting a picture but we can figure out what's going on. Liked the ending, also liked the explanation regarding the virus, spread and how it all came to a screeching halt in a weekend.

What’s hilarious (sad?) is how in 2023 people will still say “we get the idea, you don’t need to shove it down our throats!” when it comes to same sex romance but if Bill were a straight dude and “Francesca” fell into his hole they wouldn’t bat an eye about that part of the episode if it played out exactly the way it did. Most would probably comment about how much they enjoyed it.

*Not judging anyone in here. It’s just something I’ve noticed throughout several sites when looking at reviews for this episode. As someone who knows nothing of the games but likes to think he knows a little about cinema, this was an excellent episode of television.

For me, I could do without either given the subject matter. I don't need the obligatory love story in ever post apocalyptic show. I get it, it happens, any port in the storm but I feel like people would be much more worried about is something going to eat me today or do I get to eat today?

I liked how they developed the story and arc'd it out in one episode. I don't' need to see anyone bumping uglies to convey the love between Bill & Frank. They coulda stopped at "this is my first time" and it would have been fine. Unique situation since Bill set up the compound and they were living in a bit of a utopia but we all know how those end. Something goes wrong, bad stuff happens and the guys that rest on their laurels get eaten.

Holy Brokeback Mountain!

I enjoyed the episode but was not expecting that episode at all. Was any of that particular love story in the video game? Can't imagine it would be.
