I liked Merle better than Shane

Loved Merle but everyone hated him since the beginning. All he really did was cause trouble. He wasn't a character that could've lived with the mass in group after what he did for the governor.

Couple of things, I am in the minority but Shane was a D bag and I liked Rick more than him. I think the space left by Shane could have easily been filled if the writers had more follow through on the end where Rick says it's his way from now on and laid down the law and went hard ###.

One of these groups is going to join with Carol or be saved by Carol and there will be major plottage when they hook up with Tyreese again.

Oh and this episode was fine, from a single episode standpoint, but echoing what worm said, it was a little weak for a second half season opener, should have had more of a hook.

1 question I have always had regarding the Shane/Rick dynamic. They were partners for how long before the apocalypse? Shane went when he finally got Lori, only to have Rick show back up and Lori piss all over him like he was a piece of trash..

I don't think even Shane knew how far off the deep end he would go until Lori told him to F off.. at which point he felt the only way he could have what he wanted was to get rid of Rick and that was all that mattered to him at that point.

Hopefully the good news is we won't have to deal with more shows centered around Carl. If he is to be more of a focus going forward then this show is on borrowed time. They have done a terrible job with him. The show is popular but Carl isn't.

I didnt realize how important Shane was to the show until I watched it a second time through. Constant tension is a GREAT description of what he bought to the show. You could cut the tension he had with every character with a knife and it blanketed every scene he was in.

Same here. He was a little over the top crazy but something I could see as a possibility in that society. Great actor. I loved his character. My wife hated him. I liked hating that whore of a wife, Lori, too.

I wonder if the love for Shane would be as much if Lori wasn't the biggest biotch in the world. I also think it made Rick look worse because he stayed with her. I couldn't stand her either and I liked Shane's character, but I wasn't mad to see him go. It seemed like a good time and it started the herd and the farmaggedon.

Season 2 was great in my opinion for a number of reasons but bringing everything to the head with Rick and Shane was one of the biggest strengths of the season. I think one of the reasons why it worked so well was because it had to end. And it had to end the way it did.

The conflict between Rick and Shane couldn't go on in perpituity. Could you imagine how awful it would be for the two of them to be bickering back and forth for all of the last two seasons.

Would have worked with Martinez too. Could have had him join the group at the end of season 3. He was already kind of half-buddies with Daryl.

There just aren't that many likable characters. It's pretty much just Daryl (and Maggie for the eye candy). Tyrese I think was supposed to help fill in that gap but he's been a huge bust.

Definitely needs a Shane. The constant tension he brought to the show is missed. I never realized how important he was to the show until he was gone. The Guv couldn't hold Shane's jock.

I can agree with that.

Carl is a moron who can't act his way out of a wet paper sack. The first 10 times he artificially created "tension" through his childish stupidity was at least interesting... the last 70 times it's happened have been a bore. They're beating a dead horse with that trick.

Rick's "reluctant hopeless leader / grrrr I'm the boss / reluctant hopless leader / etc " act was interesting for the first couple seasons but it's grown repetitive stale as hell. The death of the more interesting characters has exposed his extremely thin character as exactly that.

I last night I finally realized that I stopped caring about any of these characters a long time ago.

I have stopped watching 100% of the shows I don't like. I don't often post in threads about them either. Maybe that's just me.

they've certainly used the smell before to mask the human scent, but usually it's more than just being in close proximity to a walker

This week, Michonne once again took on (albeit briefly) a pair of “pet” walkers–stripped of their arms and jaws, the helpless ghouls were tied together and carried along with Michonne to help steep her in the smell of rotting zombie and thus keep her off the radar of more offensively-capable walkers.

Would have worked with Martinez too. Could have had him join the group at the end of season 3. He was already kind of half-buddies with Daryl.

There just aren't that many likable characters. It's pretty much just Daryl (and Maggie for the eye candy). Tyrese I think was supposed to help fill in that gap but he's been a huge bust.

Definitely needs a Shane. The constant tension he brought to the show is missed. I never realized how important he was to the show until he was gone. The Guv couldn't hold Shane's jock.

Carl is a moron who can't act his way out of a wet paper sack. The first 10 times he artificially created "tension" through his childish stupidity was at least interesting... the last 70 times it's happened have been a bore. They're beating a dead horse with that trick.

Rick's "reluctant hopeless leader / grrrr I'm the boss / reluctant hopless leader / etc " act was interesting for the first couple seasons but it's grown repetitive stale as hell. The death of the more interesting characters has exposed his extremely thin character as exactly that.

I last night I finally realized that I stopped caring about any of these characters a long time ago.

I have stopped watching 100% of the shows I don't like. I don't often post in threads about them either. Maybe that's just me.

I used to love the show. This is a discussion forum aka timewaster while at work. I enjoy talking with others who think the show is flopping about our perceptions of it's flaws.

Its an interesting topic of "good show gone bad".... a "jump the shark" type moment that many great shows experience before the decline. Dexter experienced it. Breaking Bad did not. Sons of Anarchy did. Many people now feel Walking Dead has done this too. It's a viable discussion topic.

It's strange that some of you take personal offense to the fact that some of us think the show has taken a turn for the worse.

Shane was a great character and the Rick-Shane dynamic is one of the reasons why Season 2 is my favorite thus far. But as great as Shane was, he had to go. The entire point of that storyline (and his character) was that he and Rick could not co-exist. So one of them had to go. Considering Rick is and always has been the lead character it shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone to see Shane be the one to exit.

Killing off Rick would do two things. First, it would get rid of a tiresome character that is just frustrating to watch. Second, it would show that absolutely no one is safe. Think of Game of Thrones. In the first season they off Ned Stark. Everyone that hadn't been spoiled by the books was shocked they killed the protagonist in the middle of season 1. After that point, can you really claim anyone is safe? Kill Rick and who is off limits?

My guess is the final episode of the series will be Rick dying and Carl moving on as he is finally able to take care of himself. AMC is planning a spinoff with new characters in the same universe though, that should satisfy a lot of the anti-Rick crowd.

Lol at the people talking about jumping the shark or the declining quality of this show. Or the people waxing poetic about how good season 2 was compared to how far downhill it has gone now. Wade back 200 pages or so in this thread and there were tons of posters crapping all over season 2 and #####ing about how boring it was searching for Sophia or that the show was doomed because people would realize how bad the writing or how stupid the characters were or how awful the actors were. And here we are just a few years later it's not just a hit but a giant phenomenon.

I mean to each their own and everyone has differing tastes but so much negativity and nitpicking over nearly 250 some odd pages. I guess at least we're not in the midst of a some 20 odd pages devoted to debating if gas goes bad or not...

And I know it would take a lot of tension out of any house-clearing scenes, but there is a much smarter approach to take. Instead of going room to room like Vic Mackey, just open the front door, stand on the porch and make a bunch of noise. Any zombies on the first floor will come to you.

As for closed doors like in last night's episode, politely knock and ask if anyone is in there. Zombies inside will at the very least move toward the door, thus alerting you to his presence. Clearing a house should be easy as pie.

Umm, that was the point of those scenes. Unless you guys forgot, Carl hasn't done "runs" by himself before. Even when they found Morgan, it was Michonne that saved his ###. Maybe I am incorrect, but I am pretty sure that was Carl's cherry popping last night on sole zombie runs.

Call it lame writing, but the whole point of the episode was for Carl to realize he isn't the #### like he thinks and that his dad has protected him and for his dad to realize he is grown up in the zombie world. Of course we could all tell Carl what he did wrong and he could have knocked on the door, but jeez talk about a freaking boring show where every character does the correct thing and not a single person gets eaten. We went through this discussion a ton of times before with almost every character when they do dumb things.

I'll save everyone the frustration right now. People are going to continue to do stupid things and then in some cases they will get eaten or get their friends eaten.

What is Carl supposed to be, 12 or 13? Everyone complaining about Carl's actions in Episode 409 needs to consider how dumb boys Carl's age are. His decisions didn't seem out of character for a kid in middle school.

This episode was terrible. I am so sick of Rick saying "Carl" like he can barely squeeze out a word. But all the rest of his words and actions are perfectly fine.

I wanted Carl to blow Michone's head off, even though I like her as a character it would of made good TV.

Seems like next weeks episode is a whole lot of the same, catching up to do with the other characters. Stupid. This show is 1 more bad episode away to losing me.

This is a show about characters surviving the "end of the world" .. If Character development isn't for you then yea, this show isn't for you..

People seem to forget ,It was never meant to be a Zombie show with characters.. It is a Show about characters and how they survive the end of the world as we know it, that just happens to have Zombies in it.

What? All shows have character development in them. This just so happens that these characters they are trying to develop also have zombies attacking them. Hence the name of the show Walking Dead.

Haven't read the intervening pages, so maybe someone already pointed this out - but the title "The Walking Dead" does not refer to the walkers, never has. It refers to the survivors. Maybe that helps put this in context?

The worst scene was the whole walking backward scene. How dumb can he be?

The writers seriously must be knocking the scripts out really fast some days. The walk backwards into something is second only in lame writing to the lets have something jump out from door that you just opened move.

Umm, that was the point of those scenes. Unless you guys forgot, Carl hasn't done "runs" by himself before. Even when they found Morgan, it was Michonne that saved his ###. Maybe I am incorrect, but I am pretty sure that was Carl's cherry popping last night on sole zombie runs.

Call it lame writing, but the whole point of the episode was for Carl to realize he isn't the #### like he thinks and that his dad has protected him and for his dad to realize he is grown up in the zombie world. Of course we could all tell Carl what he did wrong and he could have knocked on the door, but jeez talk about a freaking boring show where every character does the correct thing and not a single person gets eaten. We went through this discussion a ton of times before with almost every character when they do dumb things.

I'll save everyone the frustration right now. People are going to continue to do stupid things and then in some cases they will get eaten or get their friends eaten.

Well instead of walking backwards, have Carl miss when he is shooting a handgun.

He did. He took a bunch of unnecessary shots when trying to take out the "pile of zombies".

This episode was terrible. I am so sick of Rick saying "Carl" like he can barely squeeze out a word. But all the rest of his words and actions are perfectly fine.

I wanted Carl to blow Michone's head off, even though I like her as a character it would of made good TV.

Seems like next weeks episode is a whole lot of the same, catching up to do with the other characters. Stupid. This show is 1 more bad episode away to losing me.

This is a show about characters surviving the "end of the world" .. If Character development isn't for you then yea, this show isn't for you..People seem to forget ,It was never meant to be a Zombie show with characters.. It is a Show about characters and how they survive the end of the world as we know it, that just happens to have Zombies in it.

ive heard this before but isnt that kind of silly? Arent we all technically walking dead?
