***OFFICIAL 'The Walking Dead' TV Series Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Great episode. Loved the furthering of Carl and Rick's ever changing relationship and digging deep into Michonne's character.

Great to have this show back.

After seeing how well a sword is in this new world, why don't they try to find some and have Michonne teach them sword-fighting in addition to being able to use a gun

I think that was the worst episode of the series. Wasn't the cast talking about what a great actor the kid who plays Carl is?

All of these people would be dead long ago, they would have no ammo left.

The show doesn't revolve around survival (it would better if it did IMO), but at least have it be a little realistic. All the people would be way better equipped at this point, knives, swords, bats. They could still have this BS with Rick and Carl if they wanted. Just lazy writing.

After a promising start, the fall run turned into a mess with the return of the Governor and the utterly nonsensical confrontation at the prison that followed. The only upside of the situation is that it forced the characters out of the prison, a setting that was getting stale, and has scattered them to the five winds, some in unlikely combinations."After," though, primarily focused on the central duo of Rick and Carl, with Michonne (who has already traveled with those two before, in last season's "Clear") the only regular character to appear. But it's a different Rick/Carl dynamic, both because Rick is so badly injured that he's first useless, then unconscious, and because Carl, believing that his sister is dead(*) following the death of his mother and so many other people in his father's care, has decided that he's tired of doing what his old man says and is tough enough to do things on his own.

(*) Having read your arguments and thought on it in the days after the previous episode aired, I'll now allow for the possibility that Judith isn't dead and the infant carrier got bloody in another way. But if that's what happens, that only makes the show trying to trade off the horror of her apparent death even lamer (and a repeat of the period from season 3 where everybody thought Carol was dead for five minutes).

With Rick out of action, and with the suburban development they find relatively zombie-free, Carl gets to simultaneously act like a kid and a grown-up, taking charge of their protection and supplies even as he hangs out in the room of a boy he could have been if the world hadn't gone all to hell. He gets too cocky a few times, but ultimately survives and even gets to enjoy a lot of pudding.(**) In the end, the kid wins out: for Carl's stated contempt for Rick, when the time comes for him to put a bullet in the daddy he thinks has turned into a walker, Carl can't bring himself to do it.

(**) Albeit not $240 worth of pudding.

It's an interesting approach to go this quiet and simple after the mayhem at the prison, and I do think the idea of Carl as a kid who is growing up entirely in this hellscape is promising. But Chandler Riggs isn't a strong enough actor at this point to carry this much silence.

More intriguing was the Michonne subplot, which finally gives us concrete answers — even in the context of dreams with dream logic — about who and what she was before the apocalypse. She had a husband, and a baby, was well-to-do and cultured, and not at all the monosyllabic samurai warrior we've come to know. Of course, her having lost so much helps explain why she's this closed off to the world, and why she might briefly consider walking with zombies rather than making connections with more people who will die like Hershel.

The episode's most promising moment comes at the end, as the two stories converge with Rick telling Carl, "It's for you." Not only is it a rare funny moment on what's usually a deadly serious show, but it's also a ray of hope in a show that is very very hopeless. The unrelenting misery is what eventually led me to give up on the comic book, and with Robert Kirkman involved, I suspect that may be the ultimate tone of the show, but even brief pockets of optimism — especially after a catastrophe like the prison's destruction — are very welcome.

This episode was more like one from the earlier seasons, more about the characters and less about the zombies.
Which would have been okay if the acting hadn't been terrible.
They are putting too much on "Carl's" plate. He can't possibly carry an entire episode without putting people to sleep.
That and the whole I don't need you anymore dad thing was pretty crappy material.

The kid isn't that bad an actor IMO.

Pretty much from the comics so the source material in this one wasn't great. Also, I agree that Carl isn't a great actor but this needed to be done to further his character. Hopefully we are set with him having a lot of lines for a while.

The scene you mention was just brutal. I agree that a good part of the blame rests with the writers there. (Edit: or the source material)

:lmao: cant believe someone actually enjoyed that episode. Then again i see who it is so not that surprised
Yeah I like the show. I feel just terrible. You really got me.
Hey man, I'm with you. I must be an idiot, but I enjoyed the show as well. Wasn't my favorite ever, but I got what they were going for I think. Oh well.
It's rather odd to come into a thread about a show which clearly is going to have people posting in the thread who like the show and then act as if someone liking the show is something someone should feel bad about. But hey, different strokes I guess.

It is what it is. I can understand people who are tired of Rick/Carl, but they are the main guys, so not surprising to see them first and see Michonne get back with them. Personally, I am just glad to be rid of the Governor and just feel like we have a desperate crew again. I like the start and look forward to see where everyone else is.

I'm aware of that. But you think I'm the only fan of this show who liked this episode? I guess I'm just puzzled as to why I should feel bad about that. I think it's a rather odd "insult" if I'm viewed as someone who enjoys this show.

Just to play devil's advocate, what would you have wanted to see in this episode? More shots of the other folks, i.e. quick pan of where everyone is but no depth or more depth on other people you like better?

Lmao who was insulting you? I said its not a surprise that the #1 fanboy of the show enjoyed the episode. Im shocked anyone ELSE actually enjoyed that episode. I love this series but that episode sucked. No big deal. Plenty of other episodes for me to enjoy.

I thought they did a good job of showing that Carl thinks he's something more than he really is (an adult who can handle everything) but he's still just a kid who at the end of the day needs his dad. As far as Rick goes, he has to come to terms with the fact Carl isn't just a kid and can fend for himself and he needs to start treating him as more of an equal.

The Michonne stuff was really good in my opinion. Really did a good job of peeling away a lot of layers of her character. I thought Danai Gurira did a great job of breaking down the episode from Michonne's point of view on The Talking Dead, especially how she was ultimately rewarded for choosing life over death by finding Rick and Carl again. .

I think it would be great for the show if they completely wrapped up all these characters in the next season or so and move onto new story lines. That's the great thing about this genre you can take it anywhere to any group of people.

Honestly the one best parts of this episode to me was when for a second I thought Rick was dead.

I'll be very surprised if they continued the show without Rick. Isn't he still alive in the comics? Not that means anything obviously but he is the lead character and my guess is the day Andrew Lincoln decides he doesn't want to do the show anymore is the day it comes to an end.
