They made it a little more obvious in the comic that, even though Negan is a violent sociopath, he provides things for his people. One of the last groups they ran into before this were cannibalizing other people. It's hard to live out there right now. Also, he's pretty fair for a warlord. A lot of the people in his group probably came from groups that had even worse tyrants. And he's actually somewhat charming, which the show missed pretty bad by having the guy be so annoying and repetitive. He's a fun loving guy that likes to party and cuss a lot. We should all be thinking he's awesome

You're right they have him do something violent every episode or so. I guess I'm talking about with the people we care about. He's remarkably patient and fair with the Alexandrians who have tried to kill him and his group many times. He killed 2 and that's it, they've probably killed 20 times that number of his men.nirad3 said:

I am thinking - perhaps overthinking - that maybe he sees real warriors which he could use to his advantage if he could break them. What does he have now? Fat Joseph, Dwight and a bunch of people these Alexandrians have shown a penchant of dispatching?

Yeah he's really a little ##### when it comes to them.
He made this big thing about cutting off Carl's arm because he didn't like Rick giving him the stink eye. Then he comes for his pickup and every Alexandrian just gives him the stink-eye for 90 minutes straight. They constantly threaten him and talk back to him. Olivia slapped him. Every once in a while he raises his voice a little bit but that's about it.

he has said so himself numerous times.He believes he can "break" everyone and get them to work for him and therefore become even more powerful. He realizes in this day and age numbers matter, as Rick found out.
More then likely it will eventually be his downfall as not everyone can be broken.

Reading this is so funny because the people on Reddit loved this episode and while I am not a comic reader, the comic readers especially loved the Carl/Negan interactions as perfectly taken from the source material. Negan has been more of a dad and mentor to Carl in this one episode than Rick has been all show.

I saw one review from a hard-core comic fan and he couldn't stop raving about the episode because they apparently took nearly every Negan-Carl moment from the comics and went verbatim with them in the episode. So I guess if that's what the comics fan were waiting for they got what they wanted.

I think this is where the showing is heading now... Too many of the Comic Book Fanboys were complaining how different the show has gotten compared to the Comic Books, and with ratings sliding, they figured they needed to get back to the source that this is based on.
This week will either send many out the door for good, or pull them back in as I think last week probably ended the separate story-line episodes.. At least for a while.

The ratings weren't sliding before the season's story planning went into place, though. All of this was done months ago. In fact they've apparently been heading closer and closer to the comics for awhile now according to those who know the comics storylines so this isn't a surprise to see a lot of the Negan stuff this season being done verbatim. Negan's introduction in the finale was taken almost verbatim from the comics and so was Glenn's kill scene. Well, what I meant my "Ratings sliding" was last year.. Once there was an indication that "Negan was coming" it started to get the FanBoy's
again and ratings leveled off..

Just watched this week's episode and it wasn't horrible, just kinda blah, especially for 90 minutes. I do like how they stuck to the comics but in it Coral was a little kid and Negan was a much more imposing figure. The same dynamic isn't there, imo. Negan was impressed with a little kid trying to kill him, not some punk teenager.

That's how I felt. Definitely better than many of the episodes this season but nowhere near the level of past seasons.

1. Spencer is such a PITA that even preacher Gabriel would rather walk home through zombie country than spend another minute in the car with him.

So at this point they've basically done the same to Negan as the Governor, right? A little tease about him, comic fanboys go nutso. A promising introduction, but then every week the character just gets more and more annoying/absurd.
We were basically told that Negan was going to be this amazing character that would totally make TWD great again. At this point does anyone feel that's what has happened?

the actor's mannerisms got old after the first week.
but I don't mind the apologetically sadistic treatment of his character- it's my favorite part of Negan... and that's due to the writers.

In some cases though, they shouldn't have, as it doesn't translate directly onto the show. For instance, in the comics Negan often refers to Lucille as if she's a real woman, and he makes comments such as "did you play with her p***y" when Fat Joe brings her to him. In the comics it fits, because Negan is all F this and F that, and he's very vulgar, and it just flows. In the show, the worst thing we get out of JDM is hell or sh!t, because it's TV, so then when he drops the "did you play with her p***y" line it's cringe inducing, because it doesnt fit JDM's on-screen Negan. Gimple/Kirkman/whoever have done a bad job in my opinion of translating Negan onto the screen. You take an actor who is semi-well known, who isn't the same size as comic Negan (JDM is much thinner), you let him have his leaning/head bobbing mannerisms, let him fire off one-liners and smile smugly at everything, who can't cuss wildly, etc. etc. You gotta be able to recognize what will translate from the comics and what won't. Comic Negan smiled a lot, but it was a sadistic "I'm planning on murdering you in your sleep and feeding your spleen to you when you reanimate" evil smile. JDM smiles but it just comes off as smug.

As someone who doesn't read the comics (what I know of Negan in the comics comes from stuff I've read out of curiosity such as Negan's introduction and the Glenn kill scene in Issue 100) none of this really bothers me and honestly I haven't had a problem with how Morgan has played him. My issues with the season have resided elsewhere, primarily with the pacing and overall story arc structure. I don't have a problem with Morgan's portrayal because I don't have anything to compare it to. It's fresh to me and I've generally been fine with the work he's done. Maybe if the overall season had been stronger I would have some issues with it but I've been more frustrated with other things that I think should've been dealt with so I'm not as bothered with some/many of the things I see people talking about here in this thread.

If you looks at studies in Human Behavior like the Stanford Prison Experiment or Stockhom Syndrome, you can see why a total **** the Negan could rise to the top. There is a lot of precedence in history of charismatic psychos rising into power and ruling by fear and tyranny. A cult of personality society led by a morally repugnant thug may be one of the more realistic scenarios you would have after the collapse of the current power structure.Statorama said:

So I watched this sober last night and I still have questions.
1. What was the deal with Jesus. First he jumps out then we see him on top of the truck leaving, Darryl sees(?), then he is gone. Really bad piece of film there
2. How did the dude in the tree die?
3. Why just one bullet?
4. at the end Rick and that dude found a house boat surrounded by water and zombies and a note which you couldnt really read. What was that about?
5. How did Michonne know that the girl she jacked was with negan?
Watching it again I found it wasnt that bad, certainly better than the previous 2 weeks.

I think that Darryl saw Jesus on top of the truck before he threatened Neagan about hurting Carl. He did the threat as a distraction so that Jesus could get off the truck. The look we saw was him checking if Jesus made it off.

Reruns have been on all weekend. Caught a few minutes yesterday where Sasha shot some wild dogs, then Rick goes and breaks up a stick. Next they cut forward to them eating up the dogs with just blank looks on their faces. Good stuff.

WAtching a few minutes of last weeks episode, what is the "redirect" all about? Those two idiots in the truck who were witting there waiting for walkers to go by were talking about, and also saying they could use the RPG for it. Then of course Negan mentioned it again when talking to his wives.

We have seen that multiple times, if they are just talking about things that keep the walkers from amassing at your gates, you use some types of noise makers to send them off into another area. Of course, this being TWD, they are using that conversation as a huge plot point setup for later and it will mean something totally different.

Happy Negan finally killed a few Alexandrians. He's still a bit hard to buy as this great villain for me since he seems to let a lot go. Apparently if you try and kill Negan and fail you are not going to be punished in any real way. It looks like all of the Alexandrians other than Aaron and maybe Heath will be killed during the inevitable war. I'm assuming not a single member of Rick's pre-Alexandria group will be killed.

If I'm Negan at this point, I'm cutting my losses and wiping their whole crew out (especially when I get back to the sanctuary and find out Daryl is gone and killed someone on the way out). The security risk Alexandria presents and the resources he needs to spend managing them far outweighs any resources they're providing (especially with their numbers dwindling and the ever-decreasing amount of supplies to be found in the surrounding area)
He's got seemingly hundreds of people working directly for him (plus several other communities working on his behalf without any hiccups) and he's seriously going to allow a group that tried to kill him twice in a day to stay alive? Sorry, not buying that all. Just turn Alexandria into an outpost, put someone you trust in charge and let them scavenge the surrounding area instead.

Part of Negan's controll of people is based on what we just saw. You mess with him and his people and someone near and dear to you will die. It hurts more that way. Rosita was prepared to die trying to kill him but seeing Eugene being taken and Olivia being killed by her actions is 1000x worse to her.

I'm not sure it's that deep. I think the writers feel the story is better if one of our more major characters is the one who tries to kill him versus someone we don't care about. But don't want to kill off a major character because they'll likely lose more viewers. And honestly Rosita much like Daryl is way too pretty to kill.
