my overall impression of this season is that its about a 6 on a scale of 1-10.    I do feel like the story is stuck-  just moving too slowly.     I guess that's the problem with taking 10 episodes worth of material and stretching it into 18 or 20 shows spread out over a two term "season".  

It would have been more interesting to me-   if they had kept the 10 episodes of "war" material and then added 8 episodes where you have side stories going on, or backstories, 

you could fill an episode or two just on Negan's story.   You could do an episode on Father Gabriel butching his congregation.    There's lots of angles they could add to the show, rahter than just stretch out the show which seems to be what they've done.

and yes, I hate being negative, but the above is a good example of what is wrong with the show. And why I get so frustrated is that I know the source material has a few things in it they could add to this show and make it much more interesting for the 8-10 episodes they are doing here. A great example I will put in spoilers, because it is past the point in the comics but they still may try to add something like it in an episode. Actually the more I think about it they may put this aspect in the finale, so maybe check this after the last episode:

in the comics they run low or out of bullets. the show so far has only shown Rick's group and what they are doing, but the comic has a part where they showed Neegan's strategy and what they would do. Now with Neegan talking about being out of bullets, maybe they do at the finale, but if they do then I think this ear carries over to the 2nd half of the season which might be a mistake. Anyway, they make spears and dip them in walker blood, and when they attack Alexandria and go after Rick's group, they don't kill a ton of people because they are using spears and not guns, but the people hit with these spears turn into walkers later on and causes a whole other issue for the group

things like the above are why I get so annoyed with the show. They have great source material, shy not use it? the above isn't a budget issue or anything, so it is like they literally took Kirkman's work, pulled some of the bad crap for the show and skipped over some of the better stuff

yea I was trying to figure that one out too, if Daryl was just going to put a block on the gas and jump out why the hell would Michonne even considered riding with? what good would she have done even being with? Or did I miss the point of that conversation?

Thought the same thing.  I was wondering why they didn't fortify the cab and include plenty of food.  Fell for the old brick on the pedal trick.  Maybe Michonne was going for the ride in a moral support kind of way.  haha

Rick passes another gladiator zombie fight test (no kidding exactly like last time) to win over the GPKs.  Daryl, Michone and Miss Piggy run a garbage truck into the sanctuary to let the zombies in (Rick climbs a tower and sees what happened at the end and does not look happy at all!).

Other than those two things the whole episode was focused on Eugene who wrestled with doing the right thing (according to Father Gab) and staying loyal to Negan in helping him find a way out.  At one point almost snitching on Dwight after Dwight foils his attempt at a music playing remote control airplane to lead the zombies away.  Eugene's turmoil in wresting with what to do is highlighted with him drinking a bottle of wine as fast as he can and throwing up in the sink.

You can now rest easy and just wait for the finale.  You're welcome.

So I finally binge watched 5 straight episodes yesterday/last night. 

Very weak season indeed. But holy hell was that RPG scene freaking awesome. Also the samurai splitting of that Savior Grunt about to kill the king also......quite awesome.

The Garbage Pail Kids are so bad....like laughably bad. Reminds me of the camp of the Planet Of The Apes sequels in the early 70's bad.

I really wish they focused on Negan's back story a ton. Such a great character. 

Still hanging in....been with this one time awesome show since day one on Halloween night 2009. In the meantime I am about to binge watch season 3 of FTWD. I am very hopeful it is a solid season.

Speaking of... So far scavenging for food has been a viable way of keeping people alive. But at what point does "food" as we know it just go bad? Cans and dried goods in particular. 

Im an outlier, but I liked seeing Rick try to grow crops in the prison. I liked the episodes where theres a balance between daily hand to mouth substinance and long term survival. That "look at the flowers" (maybe my favorite ep) cabin seemed to be we'll set up to make a long term go of it- and they mentioned it...as did morgans teachers shack.

I figure the type of prepared food we've seen them scavenging would be going bad after a couple years- which would induce a famine for the survivors not set up with other means.

I was pleasantly surprised with FTWD. Maybe it is because I have lower expectations for that one, and it wasn't like I felt I couldn't miss an episode, but I didn't get annoyed with it, and they seem to have better writers

I'm glad I stopped reading those right around the Gov's death... It goes back to the old adage that the book is almost always better then the movie..
There are some rare examples, but overall you are bound to be disappointed comparing a book to a movie/TV Show.

I feel many of us would have different feelings towards this season if we binge watched it.  I know I'm more critical of an episode when I have to wait a week to watch.  When an episode is over and I say to myself "This is it?" then it wasn't that great.  I've said that almost every episode so far because it never feels like it's going anywhere, just three days of events spread out over 7 episodes.  There were a lot of episode this season where I just felt like I knew what was going to happen and lots of eye rolls. 

It just hasn't felt like it use to.  The last couple years it seems like the only episodes they make that make me feel like great are the season opener and finale.  That just feels like a money grab to me.

It seems Rotten Tomatoes feels about the same.  The critics seem to like the action instead of the sitting around in past seasons but it's still not great.  They give it an average episode rating of 6.87 out of 10 which I find to be fairly accurate.  The fans give the season a 3.5 out of 10 so far.

Here was one review that I mostly agree with.  I don't find it unwatchable yet. - "A promising series that has continued to deteriorate, each new season, making excessive use of "cliff hangers" to the point of being unwatchable."

There are some rare examples, but overall you are bound to be disappointed comparing a book to a movie/TV Show.

i'm not sure cause i don't have tons of examples where i read the books first, but i am pretty sure if you picked up some of the comics now and read up to where we are you would feel the books are significantly better. Some of those are just lazy or rushed or underfunded adaptations, the Walking Dead TV show does not have those excuses. you can say their budget is too small, which all rumors are it is, but that is all on AMC

The issue they have is when they don't follow the comics they have comic fans like yourself yelling "Why are you deviating from the comics you bleeps!"

yeah i suppose. the example i have before in the spoiler is a good example though of how they can do something good and they just ignore. and there have been deviations they have done i have liked. I just want a good zombie story, i don't care who tells it or gets credit for it.

But do think the show would be better by moving from just survive to rebuild society and survive. I know some don't care that much for "The last ship" but I really enjoyed how they went from survive the disease to try and rebuild society and survive.

I think I said upthread that I'd like to see that next phase of the show too- the rebuilding of society. 

I watched the first season or two of the Last Ship... enjoyed it, but gave up on it- can't remember why. there have been a few shows that deal with a post-apoc world rebuilding and what society looks like. I said earlier that I'd enjoy seeing TWD take it that direction and then finish. seems like the writers have wrung all they can from the wandering around in a small group story-line... let's take it somewhere else and wrap it up.

eta: re: farming... so far they've used scavenged food/gas as an easy way of not having to deal with writing hunger and transportation issues into the stoy (even though they have dealt with it in previous seasons to a degree). I don't need to see whole episodes of them farming- but I liked how in Alexandria they were moving in the direction of trying to get crops going- thought they incorporated it well into the weekly storylines there.

eta2: and tbh, these small town-states: alexandria, hilltop, the kingdom... that's a good start to where it could be going. and even the saviors as an idea... mobilized militia to keep things safe (I would prefer without the cartoonish behavior)

Eugene is great in small doses, I like his character and the way he talks down to everyone except the people he is afraid of. Entire episode devoted to his #####ness is a bit much but i suppose it is needed to firmly plant him in Neegan's camp so when he dies a horrible death at the hands of Rick or somebody else it won't be too shocking.

I've always really like Eugene for some reason.  He's one of my favorite characters.

I feel the same way.  A little Eugene goes a long way.  Deciphering his dialog throughout a whole show can get old.

Pretty stupid thinking that just ramming a truck into one door in a huge complex was going to take them down without some kind of followup.  Even if it would have resulted in the Saviors fleeing you still would want snipers picking them off.   

Instead they killed a handful of Negans people and corralled all of the walkers into one area.

Well the snipers were there previously to Daryl's plan to shoot anyone that left. and yea, the plan sucked because it was out of revenge and not thought. Then again Rick's "Thought" plan was to go to the GPK's hideout on his own and sweet talk the Yoda talkers into rejoining them.

Nope.  The only communication I heard via Walkie Talkie was with Tara and Morgan.   Daryl did mention snipers but they did not do anything that I could see in the attack.  And if they were there they didn't stick around very long

Yep they play this always play this game with time so you never know.  It sure looks like the savior's escaped due to Daryl's stupid plan, killed some/all of the snipers and are on their way to attack the Kingdom, Alexandria and/or Hilltop.  Rick is just getting there after the fact.

The most boring, uneventful, episode to date.

Maybe something went down towards the end but I couldn't hang in there long enough. So disappointed in the writing.

The story they're focused on are Eugene and Two-Face for the half episode that I made it thru. WHO CARES?

At this point, I think you could watch 4 episodes a season and not miss much.. Season premiere, mid-season finale, Spring premiere, season finale. Otherwise most of it has become filler
