The starter packs on Bluesky are great. I was not looking forward to rebuilding my follow list but the packs made it almost instantaneous.
I have not cancelled Twitter, but did join BlueSky to see what is going on there. The starter packs are nice. Was pleasant to see “darth” in my Timeline again.
Oh Darth is there???
This rules. He or she was my favorite account. Figured they were gone. Also found a few other people I like that I guess quit Twitter. What are the starter packs?

What are the starter packs?

Starter packs are curated accounts to follow based on a specific topic.

Decide on a topic you enjoy following, as an example say something like the NFL.

Then google "NFL starter packs bluesky"

You will then get a list of popular or important accounts to follow based on the topic. You can then one click to follow every one in the starter pack or go through the list one by one and decide who you want to follow.

I won’t join Bluesky because it’s basically the same viewpoint. I personally want differing viewpoints
I kinda think it's funny people bailing on X, same as all the folks who bailed after 2020 and went to Truth Social. You're just going to your own echo chamber. Stick around and stand your ground, make your point and fight for it.
No thanks they can have it. This isn’t the Battle of the Bulge, if Bluesky gives me what I want Twitter can burn to the ground for all I care.

I don't wish to fight. I want to read about topics I enjoy with out every one devolving into bots spewing political nonsense (on either side).

I expect bluesky will eventually turn into this as well but for the moment, it is really a breath of fresh air.

I hate to fight everyday, don't feel it necessary to stake a position on everything all the time. If I can't use the utilities provided(comments, replies, for you...) because they are a cesspool then what's the point of having them?

Eh, it's just a social media site. At this point, it's designed mainly for people who voluntarily want to be exposed to a broad array of views. Some people don't like that, and that's fine. They would probably like some other site better. There's a market out there for Blue Sky and Truth Social.

I think people who encounter trolling or vitriol on Twitter are probably getting into the replies and comments, which is always going to be a mistake. Its like trying to have a meaningful discussion on reddit - a complete waste of time whether its sports, entertainment, politics or whatever. The only way I can use Twitter is to follow quality accounts, read the top line comments and maybe follow to a linked article or whatever, but never engage.
This is a very good point. I strongly agree.
Yeah, we use these platforms a bit differently and that is fine. Personally, being able to actually ask questions/interact with knowledge folks is the main appeal.

Is blue sky meant to be politically slanted like truth social? I haven’t seen one political post yet.

I think people are confusing not wanting what Twitter has become to wanting some left wing echo chamber. I just want what Twitter was.

Same here. BlueSky “Discover” tab seems a lot better than the Twitter “For You” tab. I told it when setting up my account that I like photography, books, sports, and humor, and the Discover tab was basically just that. It was pretty pleasant.

Yea that's a great point, I haven't signed up for Blue Sky yet but I will just to be a part of the crowd. I primarily scroll on X, occasionally I'll engage but to all of your points above, I don't get on there to fight with folks. I primarily use it for breaking news and updates on sporting events. Obviously these last few weeks have been very political, now all I see is the nominee for ____ is great/****. I suspect that trend will continue since Elon has interjected himself into the center of politics.

All the references to Blue Sky I've seen on Twitter are liberals loudly announcing their departure to that platform. That's at least creating the impression that they're trying to create a left-wing community over there, whether that's accurate or not I can't say.

A big part of that is the constituency that currently populates the cesspool areas on twitter and that of itself driving a response.

I am apolitical.

I went to BlueSky because, at least at the moment, it appears to relatively politic free (both sides)

There has been a huge sportswriter move in the past few days, and it seems like the ones that have joined seem to be happy with less of that cesspool. Mina Kimes joined BlueSky, and she said something like that it’s much better vibes, and nice to have interactions with folks without her mentions being filled with porn bots and people calling her a DEI hire.

That's certainly true of the NBA/NFL folks who have left (or are cross posting) who actually engage with each other on BlueSky. For them the Twitter comments are a cesspool.

They (at least the ones I've seen) are migrating en masse in the days immediately following an election they are deeply unhappy with in which the CEO of Twitter played an active role. And they aren't being cagey about why they are leaving (see, e.g., Howard Beck). I don't know why one needs to pretend to be obtuse about the driving motivation for a lot of these people.

My "For You" tab is mostly just a mirror image of my "Following" tab. Same general content, just mostly accounts that I don't follow, and the opposite political valence. My Following is probably like 65-35 RW-LW, and I'd guess my For You is the reverse of that. I also see a lot of big accounts that I don't follow in For You, but that makes sense to me.

It's also very obviously algorithm driven. If I click on a couple of posts about the Nevada vote count, for example, my For You tab will have kinds of stuff about the vote in Nevada.

I would say mine is similar to that. But occasionally something totally off the wall, The replies though are often riddled with porn/people trying to drive traffic to their only fans.

Nobody is pretending to be obtuse. I haven’t seen one person say I’m leaving because Elon ran the election, even if that is happening. Twitter has gone down in quality immensely since he’s taken over, that seems to be the reason most are going to me. Maybe the two go hand in hand.

I’m not semi-leaving because of Elon, the democrats have billionaires too. I’m leaving because the site isn’t usable or enjoyable like it used to be.

Lots of people came to the same conclusion about the downfall at twitter at the same exact time following a major political event, very coincidentally.

I started this thread complaining about Twitter on July 2, 2023. I don’t think Trump had won the election on that day. I certainly was not the only one noticing the falloff. I in fact mentioned blue sky in the very first post of this thread.

I thought Awful Announcing’s take on it was pretty fair. The election certainly played a role and accelerated things (and not being denied), but people were getting tired of X/Twitter’s issues well before that. Election just gave a push.

Just a reminder of my original observation to which you responded: liberal commentators announcing their departure from Twitter in the days following the election creates the impression that they are seeking a more left-friendly environment at their destination. I'm not doubting the genuineness of your dissatisfaction with Twitter or whether it is politically motivated in your case or not. But for a lot of people it does seem political, at least in significant part (and I do agree with the Awful Announcing article posted above).

Tons of people are leaving because they're left-leaning, that's absolutely true.

I finally decided to re-look at Blue Sky because almost my entire Newcastle United twitter list went over there. It's decent, looks the same more or less. Starter kits are a nice touch.

Gotta "love" Google. Not once have I been to, searched, or thought about Bluesky but after a visit to this thread today I'm getting "news" in Google about it.

Fwiw, this is what popped up. It's a little breakdown about how it started and how it might be different.

I
I actually unfollowed Elon yesterday. He posts a LOT and it became way too much. I think Elon is a genius from a business point of view but my God I don't need to see every single thought in his head.
Interesting
I did the same a few weeks ago. Seemed like every other post was his and he very often posts like a 12 year old
Aside from the prurient news value ("Elon said what?"), I think it's a little weird that so many people follow him. Yes, I know. He's a big deal and arguably a historical figure similar to Henry Ford (the automaker, not the poster). But his posts aren't interesting or insightful. And he posts way too much. I'd rather follow an anon account with 10K followers who is trying to make sense of the world than somebody who just ****-posts because he's bored. And I say all that as somebody who is basically pro-Musk.

I
I actually unfollowed Elon yesterday. He posts a LOT and it became way too much. I think Elon is a genius from a business point of view but my God I don't need to see every single thought in his head.

I think I chose to follow him like 7 years ago or something. He was basically a guy who did super cool **** and while weird didn’t post every thought had or make childish 420 69 jokes every other day. Or maybe he did but i just didn’t see it all the time because i wasn’t being fed his feed. Dunno.

Twitter is dead. Twitter was a great way to publicly hide setting a journalistic and intellectual narrative. Now that’s no longer the case. But I just set up a Blue Sky account and was inundated with what I thought were strident politics. No bueno there, either.

Guess I’ll have to be careful around the algorithm.

I believe the "Following" tab on Bluesky is just the accounts you follow in chronological order. Twitter was like that when I first joined in 2010 but there have reports :tinfoilhat: that the algorithm has modified that. I don't know and would have no way of testing it myself.

The "Discover" tab is kind of messy although in a different way from "For You" on Twitter.

Feeds on Bluesky look interesting but the posts aren't always on topic.

See y'all on Twitter by Christmas. It'll still be there. Just like when they said it would end when Elon fired 90% of the staff. Yet it still worked exactly the same.

Twitter is still the easiest way to get and send information on the planet. It's not going anywhere.

Every ad account can be blocked individually. Makes a lot of them go away

There's another type of ad on the mobile app that can't be blocked. It only brings up a dialog allowing the user to say they don't like the ad which doesn't appear to have any effect.

I've left Twitter because every other post in my feed is a Temu ad
Those ads are very annoying.

I don't see any ads on Following. I see very very few on For You. Months ago I advised y'all to use the "not interested" and block options. It took awhile but I used them vigorously. Literally no ads, no porn, no garbage.

I also unfollowed Elon recently. Kind of sad it came to this, but he brought so much politics to my Following, I just had enough. I don't do politics, at least not publicly. So futile.

It seems usage is at all time highs and many of the huge corporate advertisers who left are back. It's a mess for sure but expecting its demise is wishful thinking.

Facebook isn't going anywhere either.

I think YouTube is the only social media platform that's unchallengable.

As long as they have Google money and algorithm behind them, YouTube is not going anywhere

I think what you need to understand is that a lot of people want to read, and some of them want to discuss things, all in a way that doesn't involve standing their ground and fighting.
