Official US Women's soccer thread: ***Update- Christen Press retires (5 Viewers)

They use VAR to review a possible hand ball outside the box but not a penalty call in the box? Brazil was gifted that imo 😡

up to 2 corners now, i see ... guess Christiane didn't notch the Brasil goal 'cause her odds for 2 shot up to 16/1  :sadbanana:

ETA: now 2-0 Brasil - Chris boot it?

looks like my pardner gonna cash anuddah win bet

Now imagine you have a 7 year old daughter who likes to watch sports with you.  You watch the USA team score a late goal in a game that's been decided and one player leaps into the arms of another to celebrate.  I turn to my daughter and say "don't ever do that. It's poor sportsmanship".

The very next day she is with you when a hockey player scores a late goal in a game that has been decided and celebrates by leaping into another player's arms and I have to tell my daughter "that's not bad sportsmanship, that's totally fine!"

What's the parenting playbook?  One event means more than another so one celebration is cool the other not cool?

I'm moving on. I don't really give a #### either way, just find the criticism of the USWNT to be ridiculous when celebrations are rampant in all sports in all sorts of situations.
I'm hesitant to wade into this discussion as I don't have a particularly strong opinion, but I've watched my sons play in seemingly 10,000 soccer games over the past decade.  I'm fairly certain that my son who is now playing high school soccer would be relatively subdued if he scored the 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th or 13th goal in a complete blowout of an inferior team.

In the World Cup?

In the World Cup?
Yeah, I think so.  He definitely likes scoring and celebrates, but refrains from doing so and showing up other teams in blowouts.  I'm not sure I would expect him to adopt a different approach in the first match (or even the championship match) of a major tournament (he would never be in a World Cup).

I agree with your post - but this has to stop.

The US is not a team that has ambitions of "advancing", or making it to the quarter-finals, where a knockout stage matchup would be important.

The US is a team that expects, at the very least, to be in the Final.

Matchups in the knockout stage should not be a concern to any team with a design on winning the tournament.  If the US is worried about finishing 1st or 2nd in the group - then win two more games that you will be heavily favored to win.

Yes, GD is a tiebreker.  But, No it is not a factor to the US team.

Despite that - I have no problem running up the score - because you are good enough, not because you "have to build goal-differential"
My point was more about the rules and not necessarily the US team.  Like I said, run it up all you want, I have no issue with that for plenty of reasons.

There are as many as 8 teams that can beat the US IMO.  Put the fear into them now with displays like 13-0.  Win the next game before it starts.  Matchups are everything as injuries and fatigue set in.

just learned that two goals scored is called a "Brace" - and they say gambling is bereft of any redeeming values ... I'M LEARNING HERE!  ⚽

No sound, what's the explanation? AUS was clearly off, but doesn't matter since she didn't try to play the ball?
she didn't impact the play.

I played a ton and at a high level (youth us regional teams, top 20 college d1, semi-pro)  and this aspect of the off-side rule always leaves me :loco:

Yeah, I don't like it either. I get why they don't just immediately blow it dead as soon as the ball is played forward anymore, but in that scenario, no other AUS players are even in the picture. How does that not impact the play? Her presence in an illegal position caused the ball to be played forward to her.

arguments can be made pro/con until the end of days... it's the lack of crystal clarity that leaves me :loco:

welp, here we go ... contact is outta touch rest of this day, so no in game "get well" wagers can be had ... straight up China, 4 combined goals ... let's do it! :headbang:

are you seeing anything in the flow that would even remotely suggest 4 total goals?  or are they both in a ####### shell, tryn'a not make that first mistake ... dunno, i highly doubt a 4 goal barrage is in the offing after 33' of NIL.

ETA: i see Chiner has had 4 corners, no dice

Thanks Dad ;)

I say we get back to the inane debate about soccer goal celebrations from 20-30 year old females at the height of their sport by 40-50 year old white dudes who celebrate with a fist pump when they don’t have to get up to pee twice during the night.  It was riveting.
Twice? You might want to get that checked out.

Your betting in this thread is awesome to follow.  As a fellow degenerate who can't bet on things, I am enjoying living vicariously through you :)   It is making the games a little more enjoyable than normal rooting for you.

thanks, NR!

they've made these mornings/afternoons much brighter for me, as well - to quote Lemmy "the pleasure is to play/makes no difference what you say!"

... Japan recouped some of my deficit, so i am swingin' big on Italy and Bonansea next up ...

BUON GIORNO, LIFER!

I kinda want to send OTB some money so he can place my coin alongside. His bets are way more fun.  Bovada cut me on all props and caps me on a lot of these soccer wagers. F them.
