USMNT Movement Post (To be updated regularly)

Update in this post: Weah's move hits a snag

Officially moved
Damion Downs to Southampton (Championship)
Malik Tillman to Bayer Leverkusen (Bundesliga)
Patrick Agyemang to Derby County (Championship)
Johnny to Atletico Madrid (La Liga)
Caleb Wiley to Watford (Championship) on loan

Here We Go (close)

Rumor Stage

Matt Turner - linked heavily with Lyon (Ligue 1).

Diego Luna - linked lightly with Celta Vigo (La Liga) and other Euro clubs

Ricardo Pepi - Linked with Real Betis (La Liga) but little else as PSV has made it clear he will come with a large price tag

Yunus Musah - Was originally linked heavily with Napoli (Serie A) but things have gone quiet

Update Tim Weah - Olympique de Marseille is far apart from Juventus’ valuation of Tim Weah. Juve is demanding €20M for him and are sticking to their request while OM are holding at €15M. The deal is not nearing completion, unlike how it seemed several days ago. Weah has already said yes to Marseille and is pushing to go there. Everton and Leeds United are in the background, but far off.

Griffan Yow - DC United has submitted a bid to Westerloo. An interesting side note here is that DC United actually hold a sell on fee on Yow to begin with and are now trying to buy him back.

Christian Pulisic - Pulisic has rejected the Saudi offers and is now said to be focused on re-signing with Milan

Gio Reyna - Parma have offered €6M + bonuses to Borussia Dortmund, but they ask for little more. Meanwhile, Parma offered Gio Reyna a three-year contract plus an option for another and a €25M release clause: some details to be filed, but there are the conditions for Gio to arrive in Italy.

Josh Sargent - being heavily linked with Wolfsburg (Bundesliga)

Max Arfsten - Toulouse FC (Ligue 1) submitted a more than $2M offer to the Columbus Crew for Max Arfsten, but the bid was rejected. TFC could return with an improved offer as they remain interested in signing Arfsten.

Contract Extensions

The following players have all recently signed long term contracts at current clubs

Julian Eyestone: Brentford (EPL)
Noakai Banks: Augsburgh (Bundesliga)
Jack McGlynn: Houston Dynamo (MLS)

Update on Campbell. Not sure if this belongs in the master list or not but here it is anyways

=======

VfB Stuttgart have reached an agreement with Cole Campbell on a five-year contract!

The 19 y/o US talent wants the move – Stuttgart are clearly in pole position despite interest from other clubs. However, an agreement between #VfB and Borussia Dortmund is still pending. Stuttgart’s offer is around €7m.

Campbell is under contract with #BVB until 2028. Dortmund value the player and are preferring a loan or a sale with a sell-on clause or buyback option
Another update below. While he has yet to appear for the US senior team, he could be one of those very few that comes out of no where to make the WC squad, especially considering the lack of depth at the wing. He would need a ton of minutes at Stuttgart along with some decent production to get him on the radar but step 1 is leaving Dortmund

=============================

Cole Campbell could soon join VfB Stuttgart as they are close to reaching an agreement for him. Borussia Dortmund is ready to let him go for a transfer fee of €7M. An offer of this magnitude has been made.

BREAKING: Lyon have hired a lawyer in attempt to cancel the deal to sign 31-year-old USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner from Nottingham Forest after a transfer restriction was put in place and the club presented reduced budgets to avoid relegation to the French second tier
Just came across this: Lyon reportedly trying to cancel Turner transfer

We knew this but some saddening notes in the article:

"As part of the ruling that allowed Lyon to stay in Ligue 1, the club will be forced to comply with restrictions on its wage bill and transfer budget. That is where the move for Turner has hit a snag.
"The American international (52 caps) does not have the level to be No. 1 in the event of the sale of Lucas Perri and there is no room at the club for a No. 2 at this price," the report from L'Equipe states."
"The expected sale of starter Perri this summer was set to open up a path to a starting job for Turner. But the Brazilian is still at Lyon and the club seemingly doesn't view Turner as starting material regardless."

Thanks for posting, I was missing my daily kick in the nuts following this team

We could discuss LD's "ideal starting XI" for the WC

Weah Pepi CP
Tillman
McKinnie* Adams
Robinson CCV Richards Dest
Steffen

*If McKinnie is motivated. Otherwise Tanner Tessman

And because its LD, I have to ask how the heck did CCV and Steffen get in the lineup?
And Tanner Tessman?

(and I will skip his rant on Messi going all Pulisic on the all star game.)

IMO, had Steffen not gotten hurt at the absolute worst time, he would be the clear #1 for the US. And seeing as Turner is looking again unlikely to play, there is a chance Steffen will get his chance if he gets healthy.

CCV is a bit out of the blue because Poch has shown very little interest in CCV. He was one of the players Poch chose to leave off the Gold Cup roster. We will get a better idea in September. If CCV is not included on that roster, he will be a long shot to make the WC in 2026, much less start.

I think Pepi is the "best" US striker. I think Balogun is the best fit for what Poch wants to do. Pepi is better at hold up and occupying CBs, but Balogun is the guy who can get behind. Which is why I think Balo might the one in the lead there.

I'd be surprised to see any CB beat Ream unless the wheels appear to fall off in Charlotte. I think it's one thing for Poch to not play one of "his guys" that he identified as trusting at the Gold Cup when there is a clear, recognized better choice out there. Loyalty for Big Pat, for instance, only goes so far. But there isn't some acknowledged better CB than Ream sitting out there other than Richards, who we all know will start.

I dont think Pepi is better at hold up play or occupying CBs... Not sometimg ive seen as a strength at PSV. but i do agree Balos runs are a little more dangerous getting behind. But its been so long since ive seen Balo do anything, im not even sure of any part of his game tbh. Its more the hope of what we've seen him do in bits and pieces in years past.

The whole issue with Balogun is that we just don’t have a good enough sample size.

I don’t know if we just got a flash in the pan that had one big season? Or if he is actually a real quality player, that has just had horrible luck with injuries.

Until he gets a good run of games in a row without being injured, it’s really hard to say.

There are many positions on the field, where struggling against better competition makes you a better player. I am not convinced striker is one of these positions.

As others have alluded to, Pepi staying in the Netherlands, I think is going to be good for his overall development. Strikers in particular need to think they’re going to score and their confidence level is equivalent to their quality level on many occasions.

While we will never know, it would be interesting to think about what Jozy would’ve turned out to be if he just stayed in the Netherlands and crushed it instead of chasing higher leagues where he lost a lot of confidence and failed to score.

I go back and forth on that. But bottom line, i agree...give me a guy scoring goals in MLS or lower euro league over a guy not playing or not scoring for a bigger club or in a bigger league.

But we've also seen the limit for these type of guys when they're trying to create space and goals against the highest level players and teams. Top level French and dutch teams offer opportunities to olay euro/cl games against them....so im more than happy with PSV and Monaco for our main two guys to both find their rhythm in league against lower comp, but also push themselves against better teams in and out of league play.

I agree, Monaco and PSV playing in Champions League does help some for those two players specifically.

I like this way of thinking about things. I guess, taking it a step further...the more stuff players get a chance to do in games, the more they'll develop. So if you're a goalkeeper or central defender (or defensive minded outside back or defensive midfielder), you might benefit more from playing on a team that's going to spend a fair amount of time on the back foot. But if you're an attacking player (especially striker), you're going to get way more opportunities to learn if you're on a team that has a lot of scoring opportunities.

:censored: @zoobird, @El Floppo, and @NewlyRetired you guys are making me think to hard on this Friday. And its making it hard to eloquently say what I am thinking about your comments above.

I think there can be some benefit to those ideas. To a point. But if you are simply reacting and never getting to anticipate, or scoring too easily, there comes a fine line between good and bad.
I do agree on keepers facing shots. All kinds of shots. Claiming crosses, corners, etc can be a good thing.
Confidence is big, esp with Strikers. If goals aren't going in, you are getting benched. Unless you are Hojlund.

But there is also that mental side. Speed of thought, vision. If you are playing lesser talent, those things slow. You don't see the pass or run as quick. You aren't looking 3 plays ahead, just what am I going to do now that I have the ball. You can then get overconfident and when you play better opponents they beat you to everything.

There is a lot to be said either way. And sometimes you are where you belong. McT at Napoli, Antony at Betis. Sargent at Norwich.

I agree with every thing you wrote.

And to add to all this there is the individual to think about as well.

Some players like Weston seem to thrive in an environment where they are told they are garbage which makes them want to prove every body wrong. But not every player is built this way unfortunately (especially seeing how many times our US players get themselves into places where they are being told they are garbage).

I was wondering why Tyler Adams did not dress today for the Bornemouth Everton game and found this

===================

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola on Tyler Adams: "It's a matter of availability for Tyler. He's performed really well for us and we're really happy with him. After the Gold Cup we decided to give him two weeks of holidays because I think he needed it."

Perfect.

**** these guys

Eta...thats a total overreaction on my part. He has every right to try to play someplace he actually wants to play at. But damn...this has been a rough stretch for us fans.

just saw this... in the lastest CONCACAF rankings, the US is 5th ( :sadbanana:) .

CR, Canada, Panama and Mex all above. Nations league gives the top 4 teams a bye... so as it stands, the US would need to play qualifiers ( :sadbanana:) .

I'm not sure when that all happens- but if before the WC, would at least the US some meaningful games...granted, against teams they should beat- but that's the world we live in now.

and fwiw- CR has been playing games that count towards these rankings in WCQ, which explains the jump. the PK win in the GC by the US is also counted as a tie apparently.

Xhaka to Sunderland is done. That opens up a MF spot for Tillman... although I think Xhaka was playing more of a 6 or 8.

Will be interesting to see where Tillman fits in there. Fingers crossed for him.
I tried to find anything online...only thing I've seen is that he's with the team and training now. Didnt dress or play in their game yesterday or today, but should start getting mixed in over the coming games.

Lucas Perri has been officially sold to Leeds. Whether or not that presents an opportunity for Turner remains to be seen I guess.
I don't even know which team were talking about for Turner....forrest or france?
Lyon. With Perri gone, there may not be another contender to start, but the team indicated that they didn't consider Turner to be of starter quality. That said, if they get stuck paying for him, they might give him a shot.

Leverkusen put out a tweet yesterday with Tillman’s picture and a caption that said “first day in office” so he probably got some time off after Gold Cup like Adams did.

Rumor Stage

Update Matt Turner - With Turner's status up in the air, Turners old team, NE Revolution have entered discussions to get Turner on a loan. The situation with Lyon makes things really complicated though.

Mikey Varas continues to try and reform his US U20 team in San Diego. I think this is the 4th or 5th player he has added from that National team he coached

Roster News We've acquired midfielder 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗼 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗮 from Spain’s UE Cornellà. Welcome to America's Finest City, Pedro.
I don't think Soma played for Varas. Soma is the next cycle, this year's U20 WC, as he's a 2006.

I believe Alejandro Alvarado is the only U20 player Varas coached on the U20 squad. SDFC is just really focused on youth development so they are acquiring a lot of young Americans.

here is a good piece on this topic

Hopefully this is not yet another “here we go again”

A reporter for Juventus stated Weston McKennie showed up out of shape, which for Weston usually means he has put on a few pounds.

The good news seems to be that some one posted a video of Weston working out with the team and by my eyes, Weston looked thin and trim..

Michael Bradley got to spend time working with Klopp this summer. Bradley is the new NY Red Bull 2 coach and Klopp overseas all soccer in the Red Bull group of teams around the world.
