It’s being reported that Mathis Albert is going to be promoted to the U23 Dortmund team officially this winter. That is the Dortmund 2 team. If that goes well, it is expected in the summer he will be called up to the main squad for preseason.

I am not sure how to best process this news. Obviously, at 16 going into the Dortmund 2 team really sounds good.

But if memory serves both Gio and Pulisic made the jump from the U19 team to the main squad. Neither played for Dortmund 2.

I don’t know if this means they are less sure that Mathis is ready or if they have just changed their development steps a little bit for players.

Although I think Pulisic may have been a little older at this exact point when he jumped from U19 to main squad.

It's almost definitely the age thing. Pulisic and Gio were both 17 when they jumped to the main squad. Those 18 months are pretty big for developing size and speed IMO.

Mathis turns 17 next May so I guess it makes sense to integrate him during the summer if this next phase goes well.

Dortmund 2 should be a good test for him physically more than technically.

this is a game where Pepi would have a bunch of goals if he was playing. Till and Sabari have both missed a bunch (latter has 2 already, early in the 2nd half)

banks not at fault on the goal in their 0-1 loss. Was playing as RCB in 3 man back line and then as RB when they shifted to chase a goal. He got forward a bit, looked decent/capable. A good cross and a shot on goal (straight at GK). That was my first time seeing him and he looked the part of a bundie starter.

This was pretty nice, fwiw....ball got cleared out low and hard out of their end, he showed back inside his half with the last defender on his back- caught it on his chest ever so slightly as he turned, allowing it to slip by the defender in the air and into space towards goal. He won the race and hit a nice chip over the onrushing GK.
