Official US Women's soccer thread: ***Update- US Legend, Tobin Heath to retire. (3 Viewers)

I didn't get a chance to see anything but highlights.  But overall I have to expect this was one of their worst tournaments ever.

A loss and draw in the group stage and then needing pk's to advance in the quarters.

Rapinoe & Lloyd both bag two (a brace each, if you will) - bronze to the ladies, held off the Sheila's in a very entertaining 4-3 donnybrook.

lotta heat on those 2 players, especially Lloyd - who ran wind sprints on the pitch after the semi loss to the Canucks - ya just knew she was gonna pop.

Swan Song playing hard this morning ... was a great run ✌

Legend Carli Lloyd to retire...

___________________

Two-time Women's World Cup winner Carli Lloyd officially announced her retirement from the U.S. women's national team on Monday, putting an end to a storied career as the second-most-capped player in world soccer history with 128 international goals and two Olympic gold medals.

She will retire from international play after the USWNT fall friendlies and from club play at end of the NWSL season.

Lloyd, 39, had hinted at her retirement following the Olympics. She will do a farewell tour for U.S. Soccer, playing in two USWNT friendlies in September and two in October, which will serve as her final games in a USWNT uniform.

She will also finish out the rest of the National Women's Soccer League season with her club, NJ/NY Gotham FC, before also calling time on her 12-year, six-club career.

Lloyd scored the last of her 128 international goals when she netted a brace in the United States' 4-3 defeat of Australia in the bronze-medal match at the Tokyo Olympics.

Her 312 international caps rank her second all time in the U.S. and in the world behind only Kristine Lilly (354). Lloyd is one of just four international soccer players to play 300 or more times for her country.

"When I first started out with the national team in 2005, my two main goals were to be the most complete soccer player I could be and to help the team win championships." Lloyd said in a news release. "Every single day I stepped out onto the field, I played as if it was my last game. I never wanted to take anything for granted, especially knowing how hard it is to get to the top, but even harder to stay at the top for so long."

She is one of two Americans to win the FIFA Women's Player of the Year Award twice, earning the honors in 2015 and 2016 (Mia Hamm won in 2001 and 2002).

Her 128 career international goals are fourth most in USWNT history. She holds the team record for most Olympic goals (10) and is third in team history for most WWC goals (also 10). Lloyd is also tied with Mia Hamm for most USWNT hat tricks with eight.

Mallory (Pugh) Swanson- the US's top scorer over the last year or so- is likely out of the WC with a torn patella tendon during their win over Ireland over the weekend. :sadbanana:

Yeah it didn't look good when it happened. I thought hammy or achilles but reports are patella. To bad, she was in good form.

The team did not look great vs a solid Ireland. Ertz back will help them tremendously.

was Rodman part of this team?

and I think we have seen the end of the US being SO dominant. the euro women's leagues have elevated the women's game a ton there especially- those ladies are playing some really high level soccer.

Sophia Smith is going to be the next USWNT star. If she's not already....I think she is about to become a household name for causal soccer fans in the US.

Yes she came on for Swanson after the injury.

I agree. The WC is not a forgone conclusion anymore.

It was funny during the broadcast when the announcers would mention the clubs for both teams....

Irish players from Arsenal or Manchester United
American players from Gotham or North Carolina....

last WC was eye-opeing for me. the level of play from Spain, Netherlands, France, England- all were playing next level stuff, tactically/soccer-smarts- while the US was still in a best athlete game, with a now slightly naive tactical/soccer-smart approach (something that previously had been more than enough to carry them by everybody).

US women beat Ireland again... 1-0.. on a flukey long ball into the mixer by a CB that caught the GK cheating for it (tbh- bit of a howler on her part).

Moran came off gimpy. she looked solid and hopefully ok... would be devastating to lose her and Pugh in back to back games.

I liked Smith (11) a lot- great skills and vision, and consistently found good spots. Most of the best US play came through her. Rodman came on for her- my first time really seeing her. she looks/plays naive. poor spacing, not anticipating well... but obvious athletic ability and decent skills. a good game changer to stretch opposing Ds with tired legs.

Ertz came on at some point and still has all the ability- nobody else on the field with her skills, awareness and vision... but she's definitely lost a step. Mewlis too- just looked off the pace and closed down way too easily.

I didn't really see the US threaten the IRL goal too much, even if they controlled a long stretch of the game before losing their shape in the last 10-15 with the subs. without Pugh, not sure who's scoring the goals.

Rodman and Ertz were the only ones making things happen IMO.

And Alyssa Thompson has Racing Louisville on Saturday so I would've been pissed if she got injured playing the full 90. Even that cramp got a lot of ACFC fans nervous.

Rodman was good to great once she got on the ball... but I noticed and didn't like what I saw from her off the ball- which I pointed out. no surprise Ireland attacked better down her flank after she came on. doesn't have a sense of team shape or anticipation of the play yet. if she's anything other than a chase or close out the game sub, the US will be in trouble if they have to rely on her to defend and maintain team shape for 90 mins.

Oh- I liked Thompson too. and 20 (Kurtzman?).

Black girl with the fluffy ponytail? Krueger I think? Yeah, very active and physical.
Ireland was grabbing and holding like crazy. No need to play that rough in a friendly where both teams are tuning up for the world cup.

I'm new to the USNWT but apparently Ertz is a super elite mid-fielder and looking for an NWSL team to join returning from pregnancy. She looked a bit rusty but showed good vocal leadership. I hope she chooses Angel City to play for.

she's one of the few remnants of that previous generation of WC winning US superstars. she's legit (and you know she's married to Zach Ertz?). totally agree she looked rusty... but even shook off a lot of rust as the game progressed over the course of her sub minutes. hopefully that loss of footspeed comes back too- I didn't like how quickly IRL closed her down and how she needed time/space to do her thing... although tbf that's true of most people.

Krueger.. yeah.

the grabbing/holding  it's a regular part of the game- especially if faced with faster/stronger players. but yeah- a number of clear cynical fouls when US players were on the break. to the ref's credit, she showed yellow for each of them (I remember 2 or 3 clear ones).

US vs Vietnam - Fri, July 21 9pm
- 13-0 last time. Don't be that guy and get pissy because they run up the score and celebrate scoring goals.

US vs Netherlands - Wed, July 26 9pm
- this is a genuine test. Netherlands look really good last time and have had 4 more years to develop their league and players... I'd have to think they're one of the favorites.

US vs Portugal - Tues, Aug 1 3am
- I woke up to watch the men beat Portugal's golden generation in the 2002 WC in a 3am game. I'll admit- I don't know anything about the portugese women... although I want to say they're not as far along as some of their european counterparts like France, Germany, England and the Netherlands. Not sure I'll be waking up for this one unless it's a must win.

Rodman is garnering all the headlines as a newbie to the team and rightfully so but I'll bet a sizeable sum that it's Sophia Smith who emerges as the new star. She is sensational. She punishes the back of the net like she's mad at it.

I think this is Portugal's first WC on the women's side. I've heard they could surprise, but I still feel like the US will get out of the group.
It will come down to Ertz, Lavelle and Morgan playing well I think. Esp Ertz and Lavelle. They need to boss the mf and get the balls down the field.
And the less I see of Rapinoe on the field the better (and no this is about her ability not anything else).

I want the USA to win this but I just think someone else is gonna rise up and take it. I'm thinking England. Just a feeling.

I said it last time- the rise of the women's pro leagues in Europe, all tied existing Men's clubs like Manchester United, Barcelona, etc, is a fairly new thing (with proper backing and support). the euro teams looked really savvy and professional last time around- in ways that they just didn't previously. even more technically and tactically savvy than what I'm used to seeing from the US.

4 years on, the toothpaste is absolutely out of the tube and there's no going back. I genuinely believe the women's WC will be the most competitive we've ever seen this time around... not just 2 to 4 country's wiht a chance. mostly talking through my ***, because I know the other squads even less than england... but I do consistently scan the results pages so I see who is winning/losing to who... I'd say the top 10 andy ranked above are all capable of winning.

and England's ranked 4... so it's not like they're some plucky outsider. they're a top class squad and absolutely with a good shot at winning it this thing.

Here is the latest FIFA rankings for the women.

did Australia have to qualify? wondering why they're at 10.. seems a bit low. figured them for top 5.
Aussie and NZ did not have to go through qualifying as co hosts.
that would explain AUS lower than expected (for me) ranking... if they're using the same ranking criteria as the men.

As much as I enjoyed the US dominance I love seeing the growth of the women’s game.

Anyone else’s daughter huge fans of the USWNT?

I’ve had the good fortune of taking my now 19 year old daughter to several games over the years and she is pumped for this WC.
She regularly gives me updates on injuries, babies and other team news.
She arranged her work schedule so she’d be home for the games so we can watch together. That made this Dad very happy.

England has a few very unfortunate and untimely injuries - Williamson, Kirby and Mead. I’m not pretending to know these players well but recognize the names. Fran Kirby is a long time star at Chelsea, all time leading scorer and has been a constant for that team through years of huge success. Williamson (cb) was England captain. Mead (Arsenal) was player of the tournament at the ‘22 Euro and lead the tournament in goals (Golden Boot winner) and assists.

Are you maybe thinking of the Thailand game from France 2019 here? That was also 13-0. I remember watching in my office on a weekday afternoon. Could not look away. Expect a similar result. Probably a nice way to open the tournament, especially for the youngsters.

of course- thailand.

I did see that Spain just beat Vietnam 9-0.

My daughter is 11 and will watch with me but she's not a die hard sports fan. Taking her to Thorns' games is one of our favorite things to do together though. Just a ton of fun.

My son's GF plays soccer for Bates and is a fan of USWNT so hoping she'll join us for a game or two. She is very kind and patient when I pepper her with soccer questions.
