Official US Women's soccer thread: ***Update- US Legend, Tobin Heath to retire. (3 Viewers)

US vs Vietnam - Fri, July 21 9pm
- 13-0 last time. Don't be that guy and get pissy because they run up the score and celebrate scoring goals.

US vs Netherlands - Wed, July 26 9pm
- this is a genuine test. Netherlands look really good last time and have had 4 more years to develop their league and players... I'd have to think they're one of the favorites.

US vs Portugal - Tues, Aug 1 3am
- I woke up to watch the men beat Portugal's golden generation in the 2002 WC in a 3am game. I'll admit- I don't know anything about the portugese women... although I want to say they're not as far along as some of their european counterparts like France, Germany, England and the Netherlands. Not sure I'll be waking up for this one unless it's a must win.

I hadn't realized how bad these kickoff times will be. The first two games are not terrible for EST, decent for CST and great for folks further west. Pretty much no one other than die-hards will be watching the third game live.

But the knockout rounds pretty much suck with only one decent QF start time for the US viewers.

Yeah, that schedule pretty much stinks.

Anyone else’s daughter huge fans of the USWNT?

I’ve had the good fortune of taking my now 19 year old daughter to several games over the years and she is pumped for this WC.
She regularly gives me updates on injuries, babies and other team news.
She arranged her work schedule so she’d be home for the games so we can watch together. That made this Dad very happy.

My daughter is 11 and will watch with me but she's not a die hard sports fan. Taking her to Thorns' games is one of our favorite things to do together though. Just a ton of fun.

My son's GF plays soccer for Bates and is a fan of USWNT so hoping she'll join us for a game or two. She is very kind and patient when I pepper her with soccer questions.
My 14 year old loves going to the games, but doesn't watch much on tv. We've been to several USMNT games over the years. Horan signed her shirt during a victory tour game after the last WC win. Big Alex Morgan fan as expected.

Her tryouts for the HS frosh/soph team start this week. I'm nervous for her (a lot of competition). but excited she is trying out.
(Yes I know its early but they do a summer tourney this week against other high school teams. Her hs uses it as a tryout for incoming freshman where others use it as a training camp. She might play some JV and Varsity teams too).

The list reads like a who's who of international women's soccer. There's the England duo of Leah Williamson and Beth Mead. Dutch star Vivianne Miedema is also included, as are France's Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Canada's Janine Beckie, and the American pair of Christen Press and Catarina Macario.

What do they have in common? They all will miss the 2023 Women's World Cup with the dreaded torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Two other players, Australia's Ellie Carpenter and Spain's Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, made it back in time for the tournament after suffering the same injury, but with so many talented players missing, the spate of injuries is casting a pall over the tournament

Groups do seem to line up as a chalk fest. Clear pecking order in each at first glance. Bad parlay to start things off: all 3 games today over 2.5 goals

According to Sporting News, this is the projected line-up:

USA projected starting lineup (4-3-3 (right to left): Naeher (GK) — Fox, Cook, Girma, Dunn — Lavelle, Ertz, Horan — Rodman, Morgan, Smith.

PSA for anyone in the Charlotte area. Just discovered that Direct TV is in a dispute with Fox and is blocking their channel in my area. I can watch FS1 but not the main network.

Hello YouTube tv!! I was headed there anyway as they have Sunday ticket but it’s happening a little quicker then I anticipated.

Christine Sinclair looks every one of her 40 years out there. Legendary career that probably should have ended before this tournament- although I have no idea about the Canada player pool. Weak penalty could cost Canada the points in this one.

Why are they playing this in Winter?
All World Cups are usually played in the summer time with respect to Europe's seasons. The recent mens world cup changed this due to extreme heat in the summer of Qatar.

The summer season of Europe was chosen originally due to that being the off season for a majority of the soccer leagues in the world.

I slept through the games again, but the Spanish stats were insane. It had the look of an 8-0 game instead of only 3-0.

46 to 1 in shots and 80% possession

Given that GKing tends to be weak in the women's game, I thought this was a very good save especially on the view from behind the shooter

I realized last night I've got to adjust to the women's game a bit as a spectator. I don't watch any women's soccer other than the world cup and the game really is played at a different level in terms of speed and power and technical skill. Its still very entertaining for me and there's no question these women are fantastic athletes. On replay, I agree the Nigeria GK did well to get a strong hand on that ball, but at the time watching live I thought the placement and power of the kick was one that gets saved at least half the time in the games we're used to watching.

That mf should dominate, ton of skill, strength and intelligence there.
It was announced earlier that Lavelle will be on limited minutes. I guess there is really no reason to take even the tiniest of risk with her as on paper this should be the easiest game of the tournament.

Outside of gking, this is the other big difference in the women's game. Up to now, a 30th ranked team for the men's will still give a decent game to a top ranked team, where as in the women's game, this ranking gap could see a double digit type win.

It will be interesting to see if the floor of the women's game has been raised this cycle. Indications are that it will raise.

I truly hope that happens in the next 10 years. I think the top 10 will continue to pull ahead with the 10-20 ranked teams not seeing as much. I worry about the 20-35 as they may get crushed by pro level players with a decade of high pressure games playing against veritable amateurs.

Imo they jumped the gun by two cycles to increase to 32 teams.

It took the men many many many decades to support a 32 team WC.

USWNT lineup vs Vietnam: Naeher; Fox, Girma, Ertz, Dunn; Sullivan, DeMelo, Horan; Smith, Morgan, Rodman.

Is the bolded what was expected?

DeMelo I think is in for Rose who they are being careful with for minutes. No need to risk anyone tonight.

This is probably the biggest mismatch on paper of the whole tournament.

Seems odd that a lineup averaging 27.8 is relatively young for this team. Rodman is the youngest player in the starting lineup at 21 years 63 days.
  • The starting XI to face Vietnam averages 74 caps per player and averages 27.8 years of age, making it the youngest lineup to start a World Cup match for the USWNT since 2007.

Mewis and O’Hara in addition to LaVelle were all regular starters in 2019. I’ve not seen a game since that final so have no idea. Rapinoe is also on the bench but I think that’s expected. She’s 38.
