***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (2 Viewers)

Bienemy's interview will continue tomorrow. Usually that's a good sign.
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...ers-plan-to-continue-interview-into-tomorrow/
Probably means they are negotiating the contract.

At some point Bienenemy has to get out from under Reid's large shadow. Washington is as good as place as anywhere. He does well there and he will bolster his resume in a big way. He fails there and he's probably out with a new ownership group anyway.

Pretty much a no risk move for him. Other than the security of Andy Reid's teat.

Yeah, with Reid above him and Mahomes on the field, Bienemy just isn't going to get much credit in KC. In DC we'd get to see how much credit he deserves. I'd be happy if he came here to replace Scott (run Curtis Samuel through the middle of the line) Turner.

There's no telling what new ownership will bring. And with another season of 7 or 8 wins I think Rivera will be gone.

The franchise has nowhere to go but up. Soon Snyder will be gone. Turner is gone. Wentz is gone. We have some very good young talent. I know we have joked for years about winning the offseason but once Dan is officially gone, we really will have won. :)

Commanders agree to multi-year deal with Eric Bieniemy to become assistant head coach/OC

Bieniemy had a two-day interview with the Commanders before agreeing to leave Kansas City after five seasons as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. Bieniemy will call the plays in Washington, something Andy Reid did in Kansas City.

Bieniemy’s contract with the Chiefs expired after the season.

His title promotion, the years on the contract and the annual salary is more than the Chiefs were willing to commit to on the business side, per the source.

Happy with the EB hire. I was worried we were gonna get someone like Greg roman and run it 2:1 ratio. But I can see EB having the clout and experience to convince Rivera to play more balanced game with occasional aggressive passing. Or maybe I am just hoping...either way I'll take it. Upgrade over Turner.

The Chiefs have been extremely successful offensively while EB has been the OC. I cannot think of another similar situation where the OC tied to this type of longevity of success has not landed a HC job.

Agreed, and while unfair to EB, Washington is lucky to be in the position to have him. I feel like sooner or later, he'll be the new head coach. Maybe Ron wants to step down in a few years without getting fired even. I Could see that happening and discussed behind closed doors.

That was my thought as to why he came to WASH also. He feels (or has been told) it's his best path to HC.

Yes, I had the same general thought: Rivera may have just hired his replacement (and maybe not on Ron's terms).

This past season, Rivera said he wants to be a run first team. Bieniemy's background is clearly in the west coast offense, which uses a lot of short passing mixed in with or in lieu of the running game. So the big question is will they be run first or more west coast oriented?

I'm no GM or football coach, but can't the most casual fan see that the strengths of this offense, the most explosive (and dependable) weapons they have on offense are Terry McLaurin and Dotson? I mean, why would you ignore your best assets? I know a LOT of Washington fans rolled their eyes when Ron said we want to be a run first team. I'm glad Eric will be calling the plays and not Turner or Ron....

Bieneiemy was an RB coach before he was an OC. And prior to being a RB coach he was an actual NFL RB. I don't think there'll be a problem with running first.

Here's the thing. There is what Ron says. And what Ron does. It's not always the same thing. If he wanted to run 2:1 he coukd have hired Roman and basically got the guy who has been successful doing that. Or, he coukd have elevated Zampeese and juts bullied him into doing it. Instead he hires Eric Bienemy, a guy who comes from a more aggressive system. Furthermore, Bienemy has to proove himself this year so he is not likely to want to run it every down and essentially doom his future. He doesnt likely agree to take this job unless Ron gives him some control.

There is what Ron says. And what Ron does. I'm watching what he does.

I don't have a problem with the team running the ball, as long as they try to be creative with it and not so predictable. You don't have to run on 1st and 2nd down every series to be a strong running team. I think there is a LOT missing in the dialogue around how much to run and how much to pass. San Francisco was a strong running team and yet you see that offense as dynamic. Scott Turner's system -- not so much. Devil is in the details. I've also heard a lot of talking heads mention how passing more doesn't mean you are just dropping your guy back in the pocket 40 times per game. In KC and other places, they mix in RPO concepts and otherwise getting the QB on the move and hitting his first or second read and otherwise having option to run. Many teams use quick passes that are more like runs -- and just as safe. Bottom line, be creative. Don't get so caught up on 2:1 ratio or whatever.

Honestly, I just hope that Bienemy moves Rivera toward a "balanced" offense. We'll see what happens. I don't really know what to expect but with Howell and Bienemy as new pieces it should be an interesting season...

EB is a good low risk hire. If WAS makes the playoffs and the offense is respectable, EB likley survives with Ron. If the team implodes he's gone along with Ron and everyone else. 100x moreso if the team gets sold.

I always worry when someone makes a lateral move. I mean why didn't Reid re-sign him. He said the same nice things as he traded McNabb to us. A part of me worries about that.

But overall I'm happy to have a OC that was with a winning team and offense. Even if it was all because of Reid or Mahomes. It's simply nice to have 1 guy on the entire coaching staff that has won more than they've lost.

It's not like The Commanders offense has to set the world on fire under Bieniemy in order to be better than that offense has been under Scott Turner.

If the team implodes he's gone along with Ron and everyone else.
If he impresses, maybe he pushed Ron out the door.

Assuming the team is sold it's certainly a possibility. Hire a GM, move EB to HC, and ease Ron out the door.

Could not believe the awful radio audio quality for EB's press conference. I'm not sure who that falls on. It happened on all the radio stations. Would love to blame the organization communications team yet again, but maybe that's on the stations ?

Yeah that was frustrating with all the audio drop outs. But man Eric was REALLY impressive. I think this is the most excited I'd been about a Washington press conference since Gibbs return. Oh, and the lack of Dan's name was oh so sweet.
Yes to all of that.

What really came through was EB's values: personal relationships, hard work, and accountability. Like.

And yeah, Danny not mentioned AT ALL when they were talking about the interview process? Please don't get my hopes up!!!

Now that we have a new OC in town, there are still lots of questions to be solved. The D seems simple .... they need to get a CB, LB(s), and I assume they will tag Payne. They don't need a lot on that side of the ball.

The offense is more unknown. WR and RB are pretty solid. They obviously need a better OL and TE. And the biggest question of all is what does EB see in Howell, because that likely determines what other QBs they roster. Certainly Howell will be pencilled as the started, but gotta think a vet is on their list, along with maybe another young QB.

The next 3 months should be interesting. But to me, the #1 thing is getting Howell playing time in pre-season this fall. He needs the reps if he's the QB.

I think you pretty much nailed the needs:

Def: CB, LB, tag Payne (though I'd rather just sign the guy long term now)
Offense: OL, TE, backup QB

Of all these, I put offensive line as the very top need, after which I'd prioritize Payne, then CB (on the notion that in today's NFL, CB is just so much more important than LB). But I agree with all of the needs you listed honestly.

In terms of backup QBs, the one's I've often heard mentioned: Bridgewater, Brissett, Heinicke, Minshew, Dalton all may be kind of the "level" to shoot for. Vets who won't expect to automatically start but who could push Howell and start if they needed to. And I agree with getting a vet to be #2. If we want to draft a guy, fine, but possibly bring him in as a # 3 guy unless he just knocks everyone's socks off. Who do you all like as a possible vet QB that would fit this bill? I like the idea of someone like Brissett. He's had very recent starters experience and you know he could be a steady hand in times of need. Bridgewater injury history worries me, as does Dalton's age. I love Heinicke but we've seen his limitations and I really don't want him here if half the fan base will be calling for him to start if Howell has one bad game. Minshew is intriguing; I could live with that as well...

On your question of vet QB ... I'm gonna say something opposite of what I would have thought at the end of the season and that is re-sign Heinicke. Part of me wants a clean slate and to avoid the starter controversy, but 1) that is going to exist anyway in this town and 2) I really think he's a good backup for what I expect Bienemy to do schematically. Both Howell and Heinicke can run. And that is so important in today's NFL. Mahomes and others make so many plays scrambling around and buying time. Dalton, Brissett, and Bridgewater can't do that anymore. Mariota would be intriguing if he's available. I can't remember if he is but if not ATL might be cutting him if i remember the low dead cap he has. I'd also love a Hendon Hooker or similar in like round 4 as QB3.

The order in which I see it:
re-sign Payne (he's earned it and I think he'll continue to earn it)
big offensive line help (they're a **** offense primarily because the O-line can't do their jobs)
TE, a good one, will expand the offense greatly.
LB (they always neglect this position and regularly suffer for it)
DB (you can never have enough cornerbacks and safeties)
QB (re-sign Heinicke and draft a QB pretty high in the draft, one that can be projected as an eventual starter if Howell wipes out)

Wentz and McCain cut, Payne franchised.

Well, at least with all this sale nonsense going on, the front office is still making legitimate moves.

Wentz cut a no brainer.

McCain cut makes sense to save $ given ascension of DFor, Curl and Percy

I'm glad we are not just letting Payne go, but would prefer a longer term deal, so he doesn't go the way of Brandon Sherf. I fear this is a one year band aid to get Mathius back up to health or perhaps even draft more depth there. Would like to keep him but DC doesn't have a great track record of holding on to guys long term once the tag has been applied.

It's really funny and fairly depressing being at the Combine and running into other NFL reporters from other cities.
"How's it going in DC?"
"Well the DOJ investigation seems like it will finally get Dan out. How about you?"
"Oh. We're here for draft picks and free agency."

Commanders DE Chase Young saw Dr. James Andrews in recent weeks for a checkup and got very positive feedback about his recovery from knee surgery, per source. A good (and necessary) step as the Commanders decide on his fifth-year contract option.

Washington Commanders

We have signed LB Milo Eifler and CB Rachad Wildgoose to one-year contract extensions for the 2023 season

The Washington Commanders announced today that Tavita Pritchard has been named the team's quarterbacks coach. Ken Zampese who served as the quarterbacks coach from 2020-22 will move to the role of senior offensive advisor/game management. Brent Vieselmeyer has been promoted to the role defensive backs coach, Richard Rodgers has been promoted to the role of senior defensive assistant/safeties and Cristian Garcia has been promoted to the role of assistant defensive backs/nickels coach.

Washington still looking for a new WRs coach to replace Drew Terrell, and some quality control coaches.

Wildgoose might be the worst tackler in the NFL. Cover skills seemed pretty good, but he whiffed tackles a lot. Hopefully he works on it this offseason.

Jeff Bezos and Josh Harris are the two finalists to buy the Washington Commanders

The latest report from Front Office Sports’ A.J. Perez says that “Dan Snyder and Bank of America — the bank handling the sale — have narrowed its list of billionaires interested in the team down. A source told FOS that [there are] two finalists: Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.”
I'd love to see the Commanders get moved to Dutch Harbor, AK.

Some actual football news! Payne signed to four year contract. Nice!

Multiple FA signings:

Andrew Wylie, OL from Chiefs. He'll start. He started at RT for KC but also played guard.

Nick Gates, OL from Giants. He has experience playing center as well. Maybe depth?

Danny Johnson. Decent CB depth and special teamer.

Khaleke Hudson. Decent LB depth and special teamer.

Overall I like the signings. Trying to fill holes, so we can go into the draft not being so completely desparate. No moves that break bank so far...

I like them being proactive in the signings, instead of waiting and signing the dregs of whoever is left.

And I had forgotten how well they did in the draft a year ago.
The Commanders botched their quarterback trade last year for Carson Wentz but scored big when they dropped in the first round. Washington sent its first-round pick (No. 11) to New Orleans for Nos. 16, 98 and 120. The top two acquired selections turned into their top touchdown scorer (Dotson) and leading rusher (Robinson).

Washington also turned No. 120 (and No. 189) into a pair of fifth-round picks, which it used on Howell and tight end Cole Turner.
Dotson and Robinson represent playmaking building blocks for the offense. Howell is the odds-on favorite to start at quarterback this season. Injuries hampered Turner’s rookie season, but coaches haven’t forgotten his impressive offseason showing.

From local beat guys I'm listening to, a trade down could definitely be in the works this year. Our biggest needs are OL and CB. Both are fairly deep in this draft. The thinking goes, if the first tier guys of each of these groups are gone by 16, we can still trade back, get a player in the deep second tier, but also pick up more picks. As you say, it worked ok last year.
