At this point I hope Michigan does us a favor and takes Gruden. He might be a rookie head coach learning on the job, but he has bumbled up the 1 area he was supposed to be the guru at. QBs. Plus he creates drama instead of deflecting it. Does anyone thing Joe Gibbs would be dissing his QB like that? Belicheck? I can see maybe Parcells, but he's got juice to do something like that. His 2012 season was the best QB play the organization has seen since Rypien's magical year. You know how many starts they gave him after that season and his torn ACL before throwing him in the dumpster? 18. And he didn't even consistently suck in those 18. He had a passer rating over 90 in 8 of them.

I don't think he was blameless. But almost without exception, elite talent underwhelms when they join this organization, no matter who is coaching or choosing the personnel. At some point it's no longer a coincidence.

The Redskins currently would hold the 6th pick in the draft, with 3 games left. All 5 teams ahead of (behind) them have 2 wins. The Skins have 3. John Keim rates those teams' chances of winning another game or games

The current top 10: Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Jacksonville, the Jets, Oakland, Washington, the Giants, Carolina, New Orleans and Chicago. Obviously, this can change over the next three weeks -- and keep in mind that tiebreakers are broken by strength of schedule, though in this case the team that had the easier schedule gets the higher pick. Anyway, the Redskins trail the five teams ahead of them by one game so moving up a few spots is possible.

Here’s the remaining schedule for the teams ahead of Washington:

Tampa Bay: At Carolina, Green Bay, New Orleans.
Chance of falling: Moderate. There’s a chance they can win another game because they continue to keep games close (well, except for last Sunday at Detroit). They lost by six the first time around to the Panthers and lost in overtime to the Saints.

Tennessee: New York Jets, at Jacksonville, Indianapolis
Chance of falling: Moderate considering they play two teams with only two wins, with one of them at home.

Jacksonville: At Baltimore, Tennessee, at Houston
Chance of falling: Slim. The Jaguars do host the Titans so that’s their chance. So, in a way, Sunday’s game against the Ravens is a trap game because the Jags could be looking ahead to that key matchup. Yes, I’m joking.

New York Jets: At Tennessee, New England, at Miami
Chance of falling: Moderate. The one winnable game is on the road, but keep in mind they lost to the Patriots and Dolphins in their first meetings by a combined five points. Six of their 11 losses have come by eight points or less.

Oakland: At Kansas City, Buffalo, at Denver
Chance of falling: Slim. They already beat the Chiefs, so sweeping them seems a bit unlikely. The Raiders best shot is beating Buffalo but the Bills have a solid defense.

Washington: At New York Giants, Philadelphia, Dallas
Chance of falling: Slim. Just not playing well, and the Giants are always tough for them on the road. Even though they played the Eagles well the first time and beat Dallas, it’s tough to see those teams slipping up this late. It’s not like the Cowboys have a history of doing so. Two, if RG3 falls flat on his face, then Gruden can turn to his bosses and say "see we tried, the kid is broken and cannot be fixed". Going with Colt McCoy and throwing RG3 under the bus accomplishes what exactly? Shows RG3 who's the boss? Teaches him a lesson? I'm sure RG3 knows he's been playing like crap too. If we are to take Gruden for his word, he said RG3 is part of the future plans. Well play him then and see what you have. 4 games in Gruden's system with 3 being off an injury isn't much to go on IMO.

Without the offensive line being fixed it makes no difference who plays QB here. That means at least 3 new starters on O-line who are better than the current starters. That's a damn tall order, and without the line being completely revamped, and improved, there's no way Gruden's offense will work here. He wants a power running game and lots of time in the pocket for dropbacks -- the 2 things this line is worst at.

In my opinion the order of priority is this

fix the O-line (it'll take 2-3 years if things go well)

fire Gruden after the season and hire a HC who can work better with the bad O-line that we have while it slowly improves

after that worry about a QB

Gruden's like a guy who keeps driving a family car offroad. The car can't do that, but he keeps driving it there. And the QB right now is just the hood ornament on that car.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure they'll draft a QB again this year to "fix" things. They're so ####### clueless.

Plus the window for an NFL career is not very big. Very few players get a real chance with a second organization after one ruins you. At best you go somewhere as a backup and hope that an injury gives you a chance to shine.

It all starts up front. Our OL is horrendous. We've allowed 29 sacks the last 5 games. 17 teams haven't even allowed 29 sacks on the season. We basically have 1 OL worth a damn and that's Trent. As far as I'm concerned, the other 4 are replacable. I say right now, let Moses start the rest of the season. We need to see if he is capable at RT. Put in Spencer Long too. Why spend those picks on guys if we're not going to play them? Can they really be any worse than what is out there now? Then in the draft, spend at least our 1st rounder on a OL. We should be in position to get a good one. Then get at least 2 more in the draft. Not sure who will be available in FA, but we'll need a solid C that can help. With those moves, that should help. I don't think it can get worse on the OL.

As for the defense, that's going to take more than 1 offseason to fix. But, good offense can make up for bad defenes. See the Packers/Cowboys. We would just need a defense than can cause some turnovers. Just a defense that knows its assignments and doesn't blow coverages would be a huge improvement. The Cowboys were supposed to have the worst defense in the league by far this season, yet with a decent DC, they're defense is better than ours. Let that sink in.

Agreed. Griffin wasn't great against Minnesota, but for a guy coming for a 6 week layoff, he didn't look bad and led the offense to 26 points in a game they should have won. Then after the bye, it looked like he forgot how to play QB. I don't know if something happened with he and Gruden or what, but he hasn't looked right since and the team has completely spiraled out of control.

Agreed. Griffin wasn't great against Minnesota, but for a guy coming for a 6 week layoff, he didn't look bad and led the offense to 26 points in a game they should have won. Then after the bye, it looked like he forgot how to play QB. I don't know if something happened with he and Gruden or what, but he hasn't looked right since and the team has completely spiraled out of control.

As each qb has been named the starter I assume they spend more time getting coached by Gruden himself. The more time each qb spends with Gruden the worse they look.

If our 6 losses before the bye week, we were outscored by 68 points for an average loss of 11.3ppg. We were in every game except for the Giants game.

In our 4 losses since the bye week, we've been outscored by 70 points for an average loss of 17.5ppg. The only game we were close in was the 49ers.

Hey, that makes just as much sense as anything else I can think of. For someone that was supposed to be a "QB Guru" he sure hasn't looked the part here.

Of the six sacks, 2 Morris missed the block, 1 Helu, 1 Williams, 1 Compton, and 1 was Litchenstieger's early snap.

He also said Jordan Reed is horrendous at run blocking. One play, Reed and Paul are both lined up on the left. Their job is to the SLB and safety. Cooley says blocking a safety is not that hard. Reed completely misses. If he gets the block, it is a 20 yard run.

Cooley then said it is the coaches fault. They know Reed cannot run block. So don't put him in there to block on a running play.

A lot of the blame on the pass protection went to the RBs and TEs.

And a lot of the blame for the poor run blocking went to the TEs.

I don't think it added up very well. But that is what Cooley said.

So, this is my busiest time of the year, and I post infrequently, and when I do, I post a lot of info that it's very easy to tl;dr...

...but if you go back and re-read, in one of the the recent posts, I mentioned that I have it on secondhand authority straight from the source that the Team was in really great mood coming off the wins vs Tennessee and Dallas with Colt at the helm, going into the week leading up to the Vikings game...

...which is when Gruden got summoned by Snyder/Allen and informed that he was to start Griffin against the Vikings.

I went into great length describing how I've learned, both first, and second hand how things work in an NFL organization and locker room.

That move emasculated Gruden in front of the Team.

All the fire went out of Gruden at that point, because his position as Coach and Team Leader had been visibly undermined and the vitally important to Team Chemistry chain of command had been compromised.

Word leaked down to the locker room, which caused the multi-season veterans and team leaders to throw up their hands and say 'here we go again'.

It was audible around the organization, like the air being let of of a balloon when Snyder/Allen pulled that move, and the word worked it's way down the ladder. The Team went into a funk that it hasn't gotten out of since.

Same old, same old. Same as it ever was.

Most everyone, starting with the guys who have been around here the longest and seen it happen before, are just playing out the string, waiting for the season to end. That's what started it, and this is the result.

The same thing happened with Shanahan. I will discuss that timeline at a later point if anyone is interested, but it started with the Draft Day Trade and acquisition of Robert Griffin, which again, I have on verifiable second hand authority, was a Snyder decision, not a Shanahan one, and that directly violated the auspices under which Shanahan agreed to coach the team, although you won't find a word of it in his contract.

But it does seem pretty clear something happened in that locker room that changed this team's attitude.

1. I really appreciate nittanylion's posts, I honestly do. We get a look at the view of someone in the front office from time to time that we'd never have otherwise.

2. I'm not buying that the team tanked because Gruden was forced to start Griffin. Griffin did OK the Minnesota game, they got 3 second-half scores I believe and should have won. Haslett's defense, which had controlled Dallas earlier, lost the Minnesota game. Like they lost so many other games, before and after last year's team and this year's team tanked.

3. nittanylion's souce is a pro-Shanahan and anti-Griffin guy.

4. We get a lot of anonymous front office stories near the end of disaster years, and many of them work out to be more sour grapes than anything accurate. For that reason I'm skeptical of any report from anyone in the front office.

As long as they have 11 guys who are not "recovering from injury" they can field a team. Guys can play both ways, right? It might get down to that the way all these injuries are "lingering".

I'm worried Gruden will start McCoy when he's not really fit to play yet, and he'll get hurt worse. I don't wish that on any player.
