One of the worst deals ever... (1 Viewer)

A recent Manning Thread got me thinking about how many poor decisions the colts front office has made. The biggest one I can think of, is probably one that people dont even realize was horrible.

IMO drafting edgerin james was the worst decision they have ever made.

Why you may ask? Edgerin certainly seemed to be an adequate replacement for Faulk. I dont really think you would hear too many people argue that in hindsight they would have rather had James than Faulk. I also dont think you would hear too many people argue that James wasnt at least comparable to Faulk.

Sooooooo...... How can it be such a bad deal? Well it is simple really. Would you rather have a 2nd and 4th rdr or a 1,3,4,5,6,7 and a 1st and 3rd in the next years draft?

I dare anybody to argue that the 2nd and 4th rdr is better.

I guess you never heard of the Hershel Walker deal.

The Colts were not likely to keep Faulk at the time they traded him btw. He wanted a lot of cash and out of Indy. They got what they could for him and drafted a great replacement immediatly.

Interesting theory. Especially when you consider the 'skins traded that 1st and 3rd to move back up to #7 where the Colts could have had whoever was left of James, Holt and Champ Bailey. They ended up giving James almost as much as Faulk wanted, and I wonder if they would have gotten Holt at 7 as the Skins might have taken bailey at 5 and the Rams might have taken James since they hadn't dealt for Faulk. Imagine Peyton throwing to Marvin and Torry Holt for the last 8 years...

I think the one between the NYG and SDC is pretty lopsided. How many pro-bowl players did SDC get out of that deal? And what did NYG get...Eli Manning!

Man...San Diego has kicked ### when it comes to trades panning out for them! They could have had Vick but instead got LT2! Amazing!

ATL and NYG = by SDC

yep, and combine that with the LT/Vick deal.

I thought the skins kept the first and got Samuels.

That was the NO first rounder the next year that was also part of the deal. The 1999 1.12 from NO was combined with a 3rd rounder to move back up to #7 to get Bailey. With NO's 1.12 the Bears selected Cade McClown. :goodposting: I think the 3rd rounder netted them D'wayne Bates.

After a little research it was actually the Lavar Arrington pick that came from NO.The 1.5 pick itself was originally from carolina as part of the Sean Gilbert franchise deal.

The net results of the trades as per Drafthistory.com

DE Sean Gilbert to Carolina (1998) from Washington for a 1-5-99 and a 1-12-00 pick. The 1-5-99 pick went to New Orleans (see next entry) while the 1-12-00 pick was traded to the 49ers, who sent it to the Jets (see 2000: T Chris Samuels and DE Shaun Ellis).

RB Ricky Williams (1-5-99) to New Orleans from Carolina/Washington for eight draft choices, three of which netted Washington LB Nate Stimson (4-107-99), LB LaVar Arrington (1-2-00) and DB Lloyd Harrison (3-64-00). Five of the eight picks were included in other trades made by Washington.

1. 1-12-99 and 3-71-99 picks from New Orleans/Washington to Chicago for DB Champ Bailey (1-7-99). Chicago selected QB Cade McNown and WR D'Wayne Bates.

2. 5-144-99 from New Orleans/Washington, along with a 2-40-99 from Washington, to Chicago for T Jon Jansen (2-37-99). Chicago chose LB Khari Samuel (5-144-99) and traded Washington's 2-40-99 pick to Oakland (see 1999: DE Tony Bryant).

3. 6-179-99 and 7-218-99 picks from New Orleans/Washington to Denver for T Derek Smith (5-165-99). Denver chose TE Desmond Clark (6-179-99) and WR Billy Miller (7-218-99).
So they traded Gilbert and their #2 in 99 and their #1 in 00 (#24) for Bailey, Jansen, Arrington, Samuels and several guys who had a cup of coffee in the league..

Of course the Redskins also traded their own 1st and 3rd picks that year (used by MIN to select Culpepper and Kleinsasser) for Brad Johnson.

Ladainian Tomlinson has won how many playoff games in his career? At least Vick got to an NFC Championship game. I wouldn't say ATL got owned.

I'd put my money on LT going forward for the next 3-4 years. Atlanta is going the other way.
