Vikings' Smith excused from team indefinitely

Mark Craig, Star Tribune

May 20, 2005 VIKE0520.ONLINE

Embattled Vikings running back Onterrio Smith missed his second developmental camp practice in three days today and has been excused from the team indefinitely because of a league matter, head coach Mike Tice said this afternoon.

"I really can't speak about any reasons why, or when he'll be back," Tice said after the last of this week's developmental practices at Winter Park. "It's in the league's hands, and we'll leave it at that."

Smith, a two-time offender of the league's substance abuse policy, was detained April 21 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport with a kit designed to circumvent drug tests. The league launched an investigation May 18 after news of Smith's possession of the Original Whizzinator broke in the Star Tribune.
Why is this dated "May 20th?"
Someone get Mark Craig on the phone so we can clear this up.
He apparently went to the Mitch Albom school of Journalism
Maybe he plans on going to camp tomorrow and he expects to hear Tice say this...Let's just hope he doesn't get stuck in traffic....

Vikings: Smith returns

News

Vikings' running back Onterrio Smith returned to practice on Wednesday after missing the previous day for personal reasons. Smith continued his silence with the media, but offensive coordinator Steve Loney was complimentary of the third-year back. "I know it's a tough time for him, but he's remained focused in our meetings and in practice," Loney told the Star Tribune. "He had a nice run. He has to fight through whatever personal challenges he has." Smith has not spoken since he was detained by airport police, who found a kit designed to circumvent drug tests in his luggage.

So much for conspiracy theories that suggested Onterrio's absence was caused by the league suspending him over the Whizzinator incident. The NFL is still investigating the matter, but it remains doubtful that Smith will be suspended since he was not caught in act of using the kit during an actual drug test.
That was posted earlier this morning. I think the newly posted news might be more relevant.
You mean like the news that is posted for tomorrow. The Tribune seems to have a little "Minority Report" thing going on.

Sorry to hijack, but could someone please check the lottery numbers in that May 20 issue of the Tribune? TIA

If I had to guess, I'd guess the reason for the May 20 dateline is because this story will next appear in the Friday (i.e. the May 20th) edition of the Star Tribune. Just a guess.

On a side note, my Z31 team is getting killed with the recent news from Winslow, Onterrio, and Chris Brown. :X

Tice: 'It's in the league's hands'Associated Press

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith, caught recently with a device designed to beat drug tests, will miss the rest of the team's offseason program.

Coach Mike Tice on Thursday said Smith had been "excused" from workouts, but gave no specific reason.

"He's been excused from the rest of the offseason program and he'll be gone indefiniteley," Tice said. "I really can't speak about any reasons why or when he'll be back. It's in the league's hands. We'll leave it at that."

Neither Smith's agent, Doug Hendrickson, nor NFL spokesman Greg Aiello immediately returned phone calls seeking comment.

Smith missed the team's camp on Tuesday for unspecified personal reasons but had returned on Wednesday.

Mitch Albom syndrome?

let's get some dope smokers in here to defend this guy -- where's GM?

Uhhh guys just for the record, the Whizzinator is useless to Smith for passing NFL drug tests. NFL drug tests are done stark naked in front of an official who watches as you piss into a cup. The Whizzinator, for those of you who do not know, is a fake penis with tubes and urine pouches underneath your pants. It works even on supervised drug tests, where you stick your penis out of your fly and urinate into a cup in front of an observer. However, it will not work when you are naked. The NFL requires the pants to be around your ankles, and there is no way the Whizzinator can help Smith pass such a test given these circumstances. Here is a link to the web site for the Whizzinator. It is not pornographic at all but still, the fake penises may not be work safe, so use caution. The Whizzinator Product Page

Absolutely will not help Smith in NFL drug tests. As far as I'm concerned Smith has a LEGITAMENT complaint if he is suspended for this.

Please note I am not a Smith owner, or an owner of any Minnesota RB for that matter. But I hate to see a guy take flak for something he wasn't trying to do. I can't picture Smith being stupid enough to try that, he's taken (and failed) NFL drug tests before, he knows it will not work.

Who wants to be the first to ask how the heck he knows this? Anyone?

So what you're saying is that SOD is cronically stupid as well as high?

I think you give him too much credit...

Pure speculation, I'd say that the NFL decided to give him a "carefully monitored" drug test soon after finding out about the Whizzinator....and that SOD failed that test. This would close the door on the NFL being scrutinized over the suspension....

Suddenly my trade to acquire Michael Bennett looks a little better
that draft choice the Vikes made is looking a LOT better right now. Bennett is still injury prone, and Moore is unproven....definitely

Nice! How's this one?:Looks like when the NFL caught O.Smith with the Whizzanator, he really got the shaft.
or....Of course he was planning to use it to taint the drug test because everyone knows....NOBODY BEATS THE WHIZZ!

The National Football league has suspended Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith for a year. The reason for Smith's suspension was not immediately released. He will miss all of the 2005 football season. Smith, 24, rushed for 579 yards as a rookie and led the Vikings last season with 544 yards.Smith spent part of the 2004 season on the bench, serving a four game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. In the summer of 2004, Smith tested positive for marijuana. At the time, Smith was in the league’s substance-abuse program for at least one other previous positive test. In April 2005, Smith was detained at the Minneapolis/ St. Paul International Airport with a device called “The Original Whizzinator.” Smith reportedly told police the device is used “for making a clean urine test.” Stay with WCCO.COM and WCCO-TV for more information.

If Smith is gone for the year, what does this do to the team morale, considering that Moss is gone? One more question mark for the team.

It's probably for the better as far as morale goes, but that's just a guess. I don't have any links as to how he was viewed in the locker room.

Cleaner air probably.
They'll save money, too. Fewer people raiding the training table with a case of the munchies...

Long term it's probably between Fason and Moore, or someone in next years draft. Near term it's probably Bennett's job until he gets injured, which could be anytime now.

A Brain freeze from eating ice cream too quickly would put Bennett on the IR.

I can't wait for the next BANG! cartoon.
I think Bang could have combined some though. He could have had Winslow doing a wheelie on his motorcycle, he hits SOD's whizzinator and wipes out. He could has endless fun with that one!!!
