Otis fad diet thread — yoga, fasting, and kevzilla walking on🚶‍♂️ (5 Viewers)

100+ hour fast is done. Getting ready to break it tonight with a pork loin stuffed with mushroom, spinach and feta. I was planning on doing something close to vegan keto, but my body is craving protein. One thing I learned is that working out while fasting is not good. My muscles feel like rubber, and I am getting fatigued really easily. i have been doing some light running, and started doing body weight exercises (push ups, modified pull ups, sit ups and crunches, squats) yeasterday. Even those simple, easy exercises wiped me out.

I remain close to Greek, in my convictions, however, am very tired. Maybe Sardinian godlike. Did they have their own gods?
Really not a good idea to work out while fasting.

When you work out, you are breaking down muscle. You get the benefits when you rest and rebuild but you need fuel and nutrition for that to happen. When you fast, it has nothing to use so you are not getting any benefit at all and are actually going in the wrong direction.

Where were you yesterday, Mr. Reasonable Advice guy?

Day 94/100

Another 2.2 mile run today, but felt pretty good so decided to push the pace a little. Did the first mile in 9:22, second mile in 9:20. That's really freakin' fast for me. Starting to wonder if I can break 30 minutes for this 5k...

This is still impressive

274 this morning.  Down two in the week.  I wonder what the next week will bring.  OH, I would like to dream about battling crocks and brightly colored children with Mrs. Otis.  Is that wrong?

Day 95/100

Slept great today, woke up and did an easy 2 1/4 miles. Night 3/3 at work. Ready for a few days off. Gym day tomorrow.

Bank: $940

Had a really good workout weekend.  The hike Saturday, ran 8 miles Sunday and 6.2 yesterday.  My heel is a little tender this morning though so will take a day or two off running.

160.8

Weighed myself after summer vacation. Hoo boy did I just give up over the summer.  I'm almost back to my heaviest.

I made a promise to my daughter to lose 30 pounds by Jan 1.    That will put me at around 180. Saw some pictures from vacation and didn't like what I saw.

Need to stop the yoyo of lose 20 gain 15.

Spent 14 hours in the car and had two fantasy football drafts, so was trepidatious about stepping on the scale this morning.

259.6, which is probably the first time in 4 years I've been under 260. Down 33.5 since July 24th.

If I could drop another 33.5 I'd be where I was when I got married in 2012, which is a bit of a personal goal.

Edit: And if I needed any reminder not to get complacent, at one of my drafts I took the Shark Pool favorite, Olabisi Johnson. Buddy of mine looks over and says, "On your team, that's Obesity Johnson," which I thought was both clever and motivation.

Just got back from a dinner out with Mrs. O at a fancy restaurant.  Nice size meal and dessert. Got home and pulled the leftover pizza out of the fridge and was considering heating it up.  For the first time ever, Mrs. O looked at me and was like "really?"  I put the tin foil on and put it back.

This is getting bad.
Hey! I didn’t know we were allowed to have caddies...

Channeling my inner AAA and am fasting from last night at 8 PM to tonight at 8 PM.  Trying to clean out the crap food and alcohol I put through my system over the weekend.

Day 96/100

Had the day off, but still didn't sleep well. Got about 4 1/2 - 5 hours today. I'm off for a couple days, so I should be able to catch up. Went to the gym this evening and worked out for about an hour, but started feeling nauseous, so had to cut it short. 3mi run tomorrow.

Day 97/100

Headed out for a 3 miler today, and figured I'd go ahead and do 3.1 (5k) at a regular pace just to see how far off I am from beating 30mins before next weeks race. I figure I need to average 9:30/mile or so to do it. Started out at a normal pace and clocked myself at 1 mile- 9:42. Ok, cool. That's not terrible, but I certainly wouldn't be breaking 30 mins today. Once I got to a little over 1.5 miles, I started feeling more tired than usual. I don't know if it was the heat (low 90's) or still tired from work, but I was struggling. Considered tapping out at 2.2 miles (that's 1 lap at the park I run), but decided to push through to 3.1 just to see where I was at. I kept running, and clocked myself at mile 3- 29:11. Holy ####. I kicked it into gear for the last 1/10 mile and finished the 5k distance at 29:57.

So I averaged a 9:43 pace. Slower than what I did the other day, but I also didn't know that I could sustain that for 3 miles. Plus, there is always an adrenaline factor when running a race, so I really like my chances of breaking 30mins next week. I think the only thing that may stop that from happening is if there are too many people to maneuver around, but we'll see.

Bank: $960

ETA: I just made the mistake of reading the first few pages of the archived 10k thread. Apparently at the times I'm posting, I may as well be crawling. What a kick in the nuts...

I've always ran 5k races much faster than my "normal" time because of the adrenaline factor.  And you should be proud of a sub 10 minute mile.  I don't think I could do that right now.

So I caught my kids' cold this past weekend which may turn out to be a blessing in disgusting. I have little to no appetite and am going to average around 1200 calories this week. Downside is no physical activity but I'll just go with the Chaka theory that working out isn't that great of an idea when launching into a weight loss program - at least in the beginning.

i'm going to try one of these soon.  i did a 2 day fast, 20 years ago, on a spiritual  retreat.  had zero issues with it back then.

@krista4

due to my being hung over slightly on monday(magic football draft, sunday)  :pickle:  i started my refraining then.  i will be at the raider game this monday night :banned:   other than that, i plan to be the picture of moderation, from here on out.        and, i don't want to compete either, but am all about the support and accountability.

keto with 20/4 IF. doing 2 x 24 hour fasts per week. Feel good. down 12 lbs.

Staying active, but my workouts are not near the intensity i had planned. i get fatigued easily and my muscles have been really sore. Taking potassum and magnesium supplements and upping my sodium intake, but i havent found the sweet spot for working out on keto.

Yeah I'd be a bit concerned with the working out while fasting.

Ya, I wasn't doing well lifting on keto either.  I toned it down, still do a full body workout, but do not try to push it as far as weight.  There's no way I'm going to bulk up at my age anyway, so I'm just looking to maintain and get stronger.  Not pushing myself with hopes of adding bulk.

And what I do is sarcasm.
I did a double take there and wasn’t sure.  I was like, uh, the guy is doing Kato, fasting two days a week, and doing IF on top of that.   “Easy”???

That said, it does sound kind of wild and not boring, which is why I’m tempted to shadow it...

Got the results of my A1C test - went from 5.8 to 5.6. That is technically normal but not as low as I was hoping for.  Three things I will focus on cleaning up - caffeine, artificial sweeteners and overeating protein

LET’S GO!!

How much are you eating?  Things that I have read have said that if you are working out, going up to your body weight in grams of protein is beneficial...especially if also trying to be in a calorie deficit.  I am by no means any expert, just spewing back what I've seen.

Outstanding.  Many would stop trying to improve that number, having reached such an admirable goal.  it speaks well of your dedication that you are looking to push that envelope yet further.

The artificial sweeteners are straight up poison.  Keep on killing it brother!

252. Also could have used the advice of Mr. Reasonable Guy prior to hitting the gym a bit hard for my first time back in a few years. Soreness mostly gone now though and am intermittent fasting (eating between ~3 & 7 each day) though I do have coffee with a little half and half in the AM ... sue me.

I hear you. I am learning my limits as I go. The combination of age and restrctive diet gives me the rubber muscles pretty fast, I feel like I have very little endurance.

I am actually thinking about incorporating whey powder into my diet for some extra protein, to help my body recover better afterwards. I am not a big fan of protein powder supplements, but am thinking my body needs extra protein to heal. Probably mess around with some fat bomb recipes, incorporating some MCT oil and berries. I just want to get lean and maintain/improve functional strength and flexibility.

Good question and the answer is I don’t know - I always hated counting calories and macros - even using MFP is a PITA.  When I was actively losing I watched my carbs closely, when more in maintenance mode I still watch my bad carb intake but don’t count anything else.

But, I would say on an average day I probably get 100-150g.  I want to increase my good fat and fiber and lower my protein but nothing drastic - just tweak things a little.

Day 98/100

Went out for a run, but with no clear goal in mind. I'm getting a little bored with the park that has the marked course, so I decided to just run around my area. Ended up running for about 33 minutes. My fitbit said it was about 3.25 miles, but it always shortchanges me, so I'm guessing that was somewhere closer to 3.4/3.5.

Not sure what I'll do for day 99. Maybe a gym day? I do have to work tomorrow night, so we'll see. Day 100 on deck.

Bank: $970

I’m trying to eat a little healthier and last night I woke up in the middle of the night to a dream that I was staying up late and eating lots of garbage. I had something cooking on the stove and there was cake and some other goodies, and I was really guilty and it was late but I couldn’t stop eating. But then I woke up.

In actuality I had white wine spritzers with Mrs. O (half white, half seltzer) and some popcorn and went to bed. And got in a good workout this morning. Trying to focus less on the scale at the moment and more on just being sensible with my eating.  Still making a little progress.

I say do a double workout and give yourself $20

I'm jumping back in too. Summer fun has me back at 239. I'm joining the local squash club with a couple other friends and getting back on the weights.

I eat well Monday to Thursday always but weekends have been full of beer, chips, burgers, wings etc...

I get lots of steps in with my work and walking the dogs, hoping the squash and weights and not being an ####### on weekends will get everything back on track. Small changes, sustainability, moderation etc..
10 days in, I'm at 234.3 this AM.

This week - circuit training 3x, run 2x, squash 1x.

Salads for lunch (with protein), veggie burger, pulled jackfruit sandwich, lentil pasta w/marinara sauce and stir fry veggies w/potatoes for dinners (wife is vegan).

Still mixed in a couple beers after work Tuesday and during the game last night.

In Montreal for a work Conference next week which will be a test.

Had a good day at the gym, working tonight. Not sure what I’ll do tomorrow for day 100. I’m only going to get a few hours sleep, so we’ll see. Maybe a 5 miler? TBD.

I know you'll get a lot of congratulations on day 100, but 99 has always held a special day in my heart, ever since a young German girl named Nena taught the worls the meaning of world peace. Seriously, congrats, brother, that's an accomplishment to be proud of.

Congrats? Did Khalil Mack congratulate Aaron Rodgers last night mid-way through the second quarter??
I admit I haven’t applied myself yet. It’s early. Plenty of time.

PS now that we made it to the weekend, it’s a two-bottler tonight in the O house. That’s after a light beer at lunch and one on the train home. Go big or gtfo ammiright???

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. And sometimes he’s just not thirsty just yet, but he’ll hang around the watering hole, and then a little while later he’s ready to take a drink and you’re like “###### that horse can drink!”
