Ozark on Netflix (4 Viewers)

She is legitimately a sociopath.
I think one of the throw-away scenes from the season showed who she really is - the trip to Chicago, when she went through the old house just ####### with ####.

She will either be dead, or the boss of bosses when the series concludes.

I could see one or both of Jonah/Charlotte getting busted, and turning on the parents.  I would guess Wendy ultimately dies trying to push the envelop too far, and Marty heads off for prison - where he ends up running the books for someone in prison - Shawshank style...

Did Ben hint at something she had done in her past when he was talking to Ruth? Or did i make that up?
I remember there was some allusion to her past with Ben, but not sure it was significant enough that the writers will draw upon that in the future. Time will tell, I guess.

Yup

Great point and good catch

Just rewatched the scene. Has to be him. Him leaving the scene was to give us the stun effect.  If he was in the picture and pulled out a gun , less of an effect.
Pause the scene after the shooting as Novarro is walking towards Marty and Wendy.  He doesn't have blood on his shirt and it slowly grows as he gets closer.  I'm assuming it doesn't have any real significance, looks like they probably had to do a double take and he got blood on it the first time around from Wendy's hair and they faded it in during editing.

She told a story in a past season about exhibiting this behavior as a kid. Just breaking into houses and doing that kind of impetuous stuff. So I'm guessing that was meant to show us just how off balance and stressed she was...falling back on the same impulsive behaviors she used to lash out with as a kid. There's a part of her that just feels comfort in chaos and having power over others. She even said this season that the danger they're in all the time makes their old life dull by comparison.

Just like the Marty arcade/hospital flashback. The big lesson he took away from the place where his dad died was that the world is rigged, and money is the shortcut to power. He says he does it for his family...but like Navarro said, Marty likes the feeling of beating the system. He wants to win, his way. He likes power in a different way than Wendy, but they both relish it and thrive off the pressure this puts them under. They're both ####ed up in different ways, but in the end it's like they're adrenaline junkies. Life as it was wasn't enough for them after the trauma of losing the baby.

So far it seems. I'm guessing you hate Wendy?
Fonzie jumping the shark required less suspension of belief than this season of Ozark. The show's first season was great in part because it was at least somewhat based in reality. It is completely absurd now.

Spoilers below.

You have a 19-year-old kid (Wyatt) that they spent two seasons developing as this really smart kid, only to run out of ideas for storylines apparently so they have him start sleeping with a grandma. Brilliant.

Then you concoct this moron brother as nothing more than a plot device. And even that was OK for a while. But then in the second-to-last episode it just completely goes off the rails. I'll forgive the bipolar episode at the political fundraiser. And probably even going to Helen's and spilling the beans to her daughter. But then, after being told the Cartel will cut off his head and kill his sister and her entire family, he shows up at the casino? Really? "Hey, everyone, what's going on? Oh, sorry. Sorry."

Then proceeds to do the equivalent of that (phone calls) to Helen four more times in the next 45 minutes. Gosh, I really hate when you forgot your cel phone in the car with your idiot brother when everyone's life is on the line. "Sorry. Sorry. I'm really sorry."

And then when that mercifully ends, Marty is instantly back in love with Wendy like the whole season never happened????? Oh, that's right, it's because they needed them to be on a team together next season when they'll be aligned against everyone else. It's like they wrote the season in five minutes. It's elementary school stuff.

I have a pretty high tolerance level for garbage TV. I sure watch plenty of it. And I came into the season with very low expectations. But this was so far below even those. It was insulting. Next season should be even better when all the kids take on huge roles. That usually works out great for TV shows!!

Fwiw being close with someone who was bipolar, his character "fit"
Sadly, yes...  My sister, although not medically diagnosed with bipolar, runs this gambit..

One hour she can be the angriest person you have ever met and is ready to knock anyone's lights out.. then a couple hours later the happiest person on earth.. and the next thing crying about what happened..

You just never know which mood is going to show up when.. They do things that a "normal" person thinks is :loco:   and yet in their mind they are fine and can deal with it.

Yeah, sounds like someone who has never spent a ton of time around a self-destructive person, or someone who is bipolar and off their meds. It's not rational.

Doesn't mean you had to like it as a TV show plot device though, I get it even if I disagree. It was brilliantly acted.

And if you don't get how a screwed up 19 year old from a bad family with nobody to anchor them could be manipulated by a predatory older person who has a lot to give them and gives positive reinforcement...you're blind. Again, I get not liking it as a plotline, but it's not unrealistic or jumping the shark. It happens every damn day in real life.

so Ruth is pregnant with Ben's baby, right ?!?!?..... right ?!?

..... and as far as pregnancies go - the FBI agent character is pregnant for a reason/ they wrote her as pregnant for a reason - how will her baby/ birth of her baby factor in season 4 ???

Yeah I noticed a couple times that the actress seemed to be using an artificial baby bump, so the pregnancy is probably for plot reasons and not because the actress was pregnant. Could be as simple as using it as an artificial time limit (she gave a 6 week deadline to Marty at one point bc that's when she was due) to force drama later.

Alternative theory: the actress IS pregnant or knew she was trying but it's early on and they wanted to set it up now bc they didn't know if she'd have a real baby bump while filming the next season. Avoids having to do the weird camera angles, tight shots, and carrying boxes bit other shows are forced to do and if this is the case, her real life pregnancy would have come out of nowhere next season on a show that probably picks up right where this season left off.

I thought that she wasn't really pregnant on the show.  Acting pregnant could accomplish a few things:

a) She may appear more sympathetic to Marty, making him open up more.

b) She said, at one point, they "only had" x weeks to make a deal before she went out on maternity, setting up a deadline for Marty to have in mind.

The female characters in this show are a case study in Freudian castration complex.

Wendy is an unfaithful sociopath, undermining Marty at every turn.

Darlene is bat#### crazy, jeopardizing everything Jacob built, until she finally kills him.

The shrew wife of the casino owner of the Big Muddy, constantly berating him and belittling him.

Helen, the Ice Queen, who finally calls in a hit on her ex-husband (who really deserved it, but...)

They're great characters, don't get me wrong. I love the show. But, I'm imagining some really unhappy, thrice-divorced guys in that writing room. It's a testament to all of the actors they're able to flesh out what could be some really one-dimensional characters.

Unfortunately, at least in my experience, for people who suffer from this sort of mental health issue them not grasping the gravity of the consequences of their acts ("what do you mean I'm looking at 15 years in prison... can't I just apologize and maybe do some community service? Or perhaps I'll go meet with the prosecutor myself and explain it....") this sort of thing is not that shocking.

I thought the show did a nice job of displaying the realities of the illness.

she is also pregnant at the FBI headquarters - so her "character" is pregnant ........   how does the birth of the baby play out? how does Marty leverage that birth and/or the baby?? ..... why write the character as pregnant if it doesn't come into play later ??

same token with my mention of Ruth being pregnant with Ben's baby .....  they showed them skroggin' twice -- showed to set up the pregnancy ????   .......   the story Ben told Wendy about the house, dogs, goats, & Ruth -- maybe in the end Wendy grants/ creates that for Ruth & BEN JUNIOR ?????  .....

Also, the mom of the real estate dork.

Top of it all may be Ruth. She's obviously been physically abused by many men, but still, at 95 pounds, she rules the roost over what started as 3 felonious adult males and her 2 male cousins.

Brilliant call. It absolutely makes sense. Legacy is a big theme, particularly interesting as it relates to the Langmores.

I'd say you're right and Ruth is almost certainly pregnant. Should be a very interesting and fitting plot line.

1. She could whoop Wyatt and Three's asses, what's your point.

2. In season 1, her uncles were terrified of her dad who seemingly went to prison for them and is capable of violence, which gave her power. Then she kills them, so.

3. In season 2 she in no way "rules the roost" over her felon father, who does what he pleases until he's killed.

We all watching the same show?

Yeah, exactly why I didn't include Ruth in my "murderer's row" of dangerous women. But she is definitely on a story arc towards becoming a howling she-wolf, though. And with her defection to Team Darlene, I bet that's the Big Boss fight next season: Wendy vs. Ruth.

Her baby makes her vulnerable.  That's the goal.  She talked about 529's early on in the series.  They're laying the groundwork to not just make her a normal FBI agent, but one who (may) be vulnerable.  The baby is one of those hanging possibilities out there that could be used against her.  I'm going to guess the writers have a few options on which direction they take with it.

They can have the baby make her vulnerable, the baby could take her out of the equation for a bit, the baby could be someone she wants to do the right thing for unlike her dad...just tons of options there.

:goodposting:

I haven't posted her much before.  I really have been turned off in this series by what I consider some bad writing and flaws in the plot that caused me to break my suspension of disbelief.

The first season was ridiculous.

Later on, the characters grew on me and I begin to forgive the plot flaws a bit more.  This latest season was pretty good all around.

My biggest gripe in the first season was a guy who was as smart as Marty not being able to come up with a damned thing better than hiding money in a hotel room under the bed.

Are. You. #######. Kidding. Me.

That didn't bother me, at all. He was on the run from Chicago to backwater Ozarks, with his freaked out family in tow that he was keeping in the dark. Carrying $Millions in cash. Number one priority is keep a low profile and don't tip anyone off you're sitting on that kinda loot, at least until you get the lay of the land.

If Charlotte and Jonah had stayed in the room, no way Ruth ever tosses the room and finds the cash.

Only a few episodes into Season 3 but I'm prepared to give up any high hopes I had for the series.  It's a decent watch during this CV plague but nothing close to rivaling Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul.   The writing and character development needs a lot of work.   The cartel almost seems cartoonish.

Still cracks me up that the Brillo headed blonde is now the pit boss or poker tournament director or whatever other important job a casino has.  She really is a master of all trades.  No education or experience needed.

But seriously.  A mastermind, intelligent person, couldn't find a single damn better place to put the money?  Lockers in an airport maybe?  Safe deposit boxes?

Are ya f'n kidding me?

I have the impression that Jonah will be bipolar or have some other psychiatric issue in season 4.

We now know it is in the family. Season 1 Marty and Wendy had the conversation about how weird he is. I think Wendy even says he will shoot up a school one day. We have seen allusions that he may have something going on in the head.

Say you've got $5M (that was the amount, right?) Where do you put it? It's actually pretty cool hypothetical.

Airport locker? Are these even a thing anymore since 9/11? Even if they are, do you really want to be lugging around a duffel bag that looks suspiciously like it's full of cash with all of the surveillance around airports? Plus, how secure is that, really? And, he needs ready access to the money when it's time to mix it in the clean supply. Closest major airport would probably be KC? Chicago? Can't make that run every day.

Safe deposit box? I've never had a safe deposit box. But, from what I've seen on movies, you have to fill out paperwork at a bank and get escorted in, right? Sure, they leave you alone for privacy (at least in the movies), but you're raising eyebrows walking in there with the suspicious duffle bag full of cash. Are banks under obligation to report suspicious stuff like that to the Feds? I know transactions above a certain level raise red flags. Plus, it seems like a huge red flag to be going into a safe deposit box every day to withdraw some of the cash to launder it.

I'd definitely have it on me as much as humanly possible until I found a secure spot for it. Car trunk is no good- too easy to get stolen. He went out and rented the storage shed as quickly as possible, and was pretty ingenious hiding it in the float of the catamaran boat. He just didn't know Ruth and her dad were following him.

I agree with those talking about major flaws in the plot and some of the over the top stuff.   I think the acting elevates the show in a big way.  Despite the flaws, I am still enjoying it a ton.

Seems like once a season they have some ridiculous death that seems almost cartoonish. Season 2 was that person getting hit by a car out of nowhere (cannot even remember who it was, but the way it was shot and edited made it look silly), and then this season had the casino wife getting knocked down a hill by her husband and then rolling into the lake, presumably to her death.

Hey, uh,  who's is still alive?
Sure. Was just responding to your assertion that she is one of the more over the top female characters on the show because she "ruled the roost" over the adult felons in her life when the series started, that's what your post said. Just pointing out that she held whatever power she had over her uncles while they were alive because they were terrified of her father.

Agreed. Acting had made it watchable.  The money wasn’t the main thing.  There have been several “you’ve got to be ####ting me” moments. But I still watch and the past seasons was good.

At first I couldn’t stand him, but now that I’ve finished the season...

they did Uncle Ben* dirty...DIRTY!

*that was some fine acting, whoever portrayed him.  Just dynamic

Eh, given the constructs of the show and what we know about the characters, I honestly thought they were about as lenient as they could be with him.

Oh I knew once they introduced his issues that’s exactly what would happen...but dang if his pleas and cries for help and honest, child-like approach to right/wrong didn’t just tug at the heart strings and made me hurt for someone who sort of understood their self but could not at all control it.  It was the acting, definitely the acting that pulled it all off

Depends on what you want.  Any series out there can be nitpicked apart if that's what you choose to do.

Hard to believe the actor played the slick business tycoon brother in Iron Fist.

at the end?? no one that I saw....
just   at the world/Mom for killing the uncle so took it out on the poor window.
just seemed like they left that part intentionally unclear. something or someone spooked him, but not sure who may have been coming to their house.

I thought for a fleeting moment it was his sister, but after review I think if it were to be future plot point they’d have cliff-hangered it with some kind of facial reaction before scene end

I took it as a visceral sign of change within Jonah and that he's likely to become a sort of loose cannon in the next season.
