P90X - Anyone try this? (3 Viewers)

Just ordered this on ebay. Looking forward to trying it out.

Like a few others, I'm a father of 2 little ones now (3.5 & 1) and I've let myself go for too long. I also race enduros and look forward to this adding that extra level of fitness I've always seemed to lack (I am alway fighting to the finish, where others are still rippin' after 5hrs).

I'm also a pullup wuss, so we'll see...
Good luckJust remember, don't get frustrated.......just keep hitting play

My P90X is in the mail, looking forward to getting started. Anyone know of a good deal on a rafter mounted pullup bar? I will be working out in the basement, and there are no door frames to be able to use the P90X pullup bar, or any similar knockoffs.

Question for the gym goers who started p90x- did/do you still go to the gym, or does this workout do enough/wear you out that the gym no longer seemed necessary?

Thinking about trying this but not sure I'd want to give up the gym 3 times a week. TIA

my guess would be no. i just completed day 15 and used to run 3-5 times a week. i could still probably squeeze in a run or 2 a week, and plan on it, but in the beginning i am too drained.

Hit a milestone today, with the second digit of my weight changing. I started on 1/1 at 187, and got down to 179 today. I'm shooting for 159 by the end of the program, but will need to pick the pace up slightly to hit that. According to my calculations, my body fat percentage is down from 23.7 to 19.4, and I've gained 1.9 pounds of lean weight. I find the last number hard to believe, but so far so good.I'm a little sick of the rest week I'm in. I'm having a hard time getting motivated to do the exercises this week (I've skipped two already), but I'm looking forward to hitting the strength stuff again next week.
You should really try some of the pre-workout products available. I have never used anything but Creatine and protein shakes in the past, but I started using Superpump 250 based on a recommendation here and it works great. I have no way of breaking out the workout benefits, but it definitely gets you motivated to start. I also find I workout longer. Often times I will throw in a cardio routine at the end of my strength workout just because I'm still raring to go. It just works.
If I'm working out at night, would those types of products end up making it hard to go to sleep?I currently work out starting around 9:30pm after the kids are in bed. I have a hard enough time falling a sleep from the workout rush and would hate to make it worse.
Yeah, that's probably too late. I don't take it after 8:00 and for some that still might be pushing it.

Just use work gloves, and do pullups on the rafter.

Well, I injured myself for the second time during my 5 weeks of P90X. Of course, neither injury had anything to do with P90X itself, but has caused me to miss workouts. The first time was I was doing some Sumo Squats because I didn't think the leg work was enough, and I wrenched my back. It is still a little sore, but it only skipped a couple workouts. Last night, I sprained my ankle scrimmaging with the basketball team I coach. Not sure how long that is going to keep me down. Granted, I can do the upper body stuff, but no aerobics or leg stuff for a while.

Yeah, me too. I got an Iron Gym pull-up bar for Christmas, and my first workout was two reps of one. But it's been coming along with two or three efforts a week (not via p90x). Four reps of five last night ...so some progress. They're not kidding when they emphasize the importance of strength work as we get older. It does fade quickly.Good luck with your new routines!

Awesome. Nice job! I'd be thrilled with those results as I'm sure I'm gonna be in the same exact boat (max of 1).

Depends on your goals. If you just want to tone up your muscles and get tighter around the middle, sticking strictly to P90X will do the trick.I found best results when I mixed the P90X with some heavy weight training. The first month or so will probably be intense enough for you to stop going to the gym. It was for me, but once you adapt to teh P90X, I think you'll like to throw in some freeweights, too.

How about for those of us that aren't in "Rocky IV"?

Well I just finished the first day and all I can say is OUCH. I made it through the chest/back portion OK, but the Ab ripper was insane. I couldn't do some of the moves they were doing. Who comes up with these things???????

The second go around I got a good taste of the carpet when trying to do the diamond pushups. I just collapsed into the floor, face first :bag:

Really looking forward to this getting "easier".

If you're under the impression that pullups are somehow more difficult on one kind of bar than on another, I don't know what to tell you.

I just finished week two. All I can say is WOW. Plyo (day two) is still the hardest for me. I wouldn't say week two was easier because you should be pushing yourself just as hard each time. Week two I concentrated on better form.Invested in a set of Bowflex Selecttech 552's (basically brand new - $300 off craigslist with stand) and I would highly recommend them. Was using dumbbells with plates and there just is not enough time to keep changing weights. The selecttechs eliminated that problem.eta - I had a hard time with the ab ripper the first week. This week seemed much better and yesterday I was actually able to complete most of the exercises. The fifo scissors still kill me.

I have no clue what Plyo has in store for me. We'll find out tomorrow! I don't want to peak and get myself worked up. I like his tip - "just come in and turn your mind off and go to work.". That really stuck with me.

I can't believe it, but I loved Plyo. This is definitely more up my alley. I definitely need to get a heart rate monitor. There were a few times I could feel my heart beating through my throat.

:bag: Pretty sure Rocky couldn't even do pullups on rafters.

I should probably venture over to the p90x forums since I feel the need to keep updating, but at any rate...

I'm really starting to fall in love with this. I had a pretty good endorphin high at the end of today's workout. I haven't felt that great after a workout in a long long time. Today was day 3 (shoulders/arms/ab ripper x) and I felt infinitely better today than I did on day 1. It seems ridiculous to feel this much better already, but I do. The moves I couldn't do on day 1 with ab ripper x I was able to get 4-5 reps in today. Its a far way off from doing the 25, but I was pretty surprised how much "easier" it was this go around. Easier probably isn't the right word...

On to Yoga x tomorrow. This should be real interesting. I've never done a lick of Yoga in my life.

I'm not impressed with theP90X forums. It seems a lot of the longer term threads aren't even discussing P90X anymore, and just general workout. feel free to keep updating here. As for me, I'm about to start week 6. It's been a struggle lately. I sprained my ankle in the middle of week 4, and I'm still not able to do any of the cardio days. I've been keeping up with the strength days, but it's a big time bummer. Doing this to lose weight, the weight loss has obviously slowed big time.

:) The Beachbody forums suck. Keep updating here. Seems there's at least a few of us here in different phases of the program.I'm on week 3. I absolutely love the workouts. My first yoga x was a disaster. My second yoga x was one of the best workouts I've ever had :bag: . Really, it was awesome. And like Ned, my ab ripper x workouts get better with each workout (last night I got 229 total reps, 140 my first night - Do you guys have the spreadsheets that go along with the workouts?). Love it. Looking forward to shoulders and arms with my new Bowflex Selecttechs tonight! Not sure if its been discussed in this thread or not (I'll look) but what are you guys doing for a recovery drink? I'm mixing Gatoraid, Fruit Juice and a scoop of Whey Protein.

Yup, they suck. After my post I went over there and it was nothing but before/after pics, people begging to have you join them, etc etc. Not my cup of tea. I'd rather have discussions about how we're doing/feeling.I haven't jumped into the recovery drink stuff, yet. I just ordered some Cytomax though. A lot of guys I ride with swear by it, so I'm giving that a shot. :bag: I didn't download the worksheets when I first started, but I just printed them out and will have them ready for the next time. I don't think I'll need it for Yoga tonight. :bag:Anyone else have any trouble sleeping after starting this? Each night has gotten worse, to where I'm not feeling as tired at night and can't fall asleep. Last night sucked, hard. I went to bed at 9:30 and tossed and turned until about 1230. Woke up this morning and feel like I've slept about 3hrs.

YES. Only lasted 3 or 4 nights, I think due to the extreme soreness. Every time I moved it hurt. The first yoga session did wonders for this. Now I sleep like a freaking baby. And about the spreadsheets, if you're an excel guy I have an awesome spreadsheet for the workouts and another one for the nutrition. Let me know if you (or anyone else) would like a copy.

I don't think I am ready for this yet, but I am itching to give it a try.

Brief backstory -

I am 6' 4" at 39 years of age

On 3/3/2009 I weighed in at 415 lbs (as far as I know it was the heaviest I ever tipped the scales) and was the day I was wheeled into the operating room to have lap-band surgery done. As of today I am now at 314 lbs. So 101 lbs dropped and massive improvement to my health. No more sore back, sore knees, shortness of breath etc... but I still have a long way to go before I would feel I am at a comfortable weight.

So a little less than a year ago I was surviving on fastfood 3 times a day + a 12 pack of soda a day. Zero exercise and zero motivation. So over the last year I have drastically changed my way of eating and am now averaging between 1300-1700 calories a day, with the main emphasis on protein (minimum of 60g of protein a day). No soda's (I live off of crystal light now) and no fastfood. I live in a very small town (population 5k) so the option for a gym here does not exist, so I ended up buying an Elliptical

It was a great buy for me as I am on this thing 6 days a week at 30 minute sessions. I normally do a fatburn routine 4 days a week and 2 days a week is an interval training. And since there is no gym here, I ended up buying some adjustable weights which have been pretty nice thus far.

So now the weight loss has slowed though. I am still losing weight, but at a much slower weight than when this started. The first 8 months or so I was averaging a 10 lb a month weightloss but over the last several months it has slowed to about 4-5 lbs a month. Now, as frustrating as the drop off of average loss is...I am not ignorant in that fact that losing 4-5 lbs a month is still damn good and research shows that losing in lower amounts like that is actually better for you. But I want to be able to shake things up and have looked at doing something like P90X. But I am pretty sure that even with losing 100 lbs I am still not going to be in the catagory where this type of program is workable for me. I can maybe do 4-5 pushups, and I have never been able to do a pullup in my life. I understand that this type of program has the ability to assist those that are not the perfect shape but I do not know if it would be designed for those that are in my kind of shape (314 lbs). Either way, it's good to see the updates that you all do as I am close to wanting to ull the trigger and giving this a try. My target weight is 240 lbs, anything beyond that is icing on the cake for me. So I have another 74 lbs to go

Just an glance at what my daily intake is:

Breakfast - Muscle Milk Light (160 calories, 9g Carbs, 20g Protein)

Snack - South Beach Living Protein Bar (140 calories, 15g Carbs, 10g Protein)

Lunch - could be anything leftover from the dinner from the night before. So yesterday it was tunafish salad on whole wheat toast

Snack South Beach Living Protein Bar, or an apple, or an orange

Dinner - examples are a grilled steak with a baked potato, or some talapia with stemmed veges, or a chicken w/ turkey sausage and brown rice crockpot meal I throw together

Snack - Protein Bar, or a piece of fruit or a Danon Light and Fit yogurt

:lmao: You're doing fantastic! Just fyi - they have other programs that may be more suitable for you (Power 90)maybe?

Congrats on the 101!DO IT. They are great at showing you different variations to a lot of the exercises that they're doing. I can only get 1 legit pullup in, so I'm using the assisted method (foot on the back of a chair) for the pullup exercises. Also, the fitness guide that comes with the program has different variations to the standard P90x routine. The lean program sounds like something you might be interested in. It's still P90x, but a more cardio based routine.

There are a lot of exercises where I can't keep pace with them (especially ab ripper x). The key is to do your thing. I hate cheesy catch phrases, but he nails it with "Do your best, forget the rest". If you can only do a few pushups, then that's what you do. While they're still doing their thing, I'm stretching/staying loose. Each exercise is 0:30 - 1:00, so you're not waiting around forever.

Big B, first of all, congrats on the 101. That's an awesome accomplishment. I'll agree with Random here and say that maybe the Power90 might be the way to go. P90X is extremely challenging for me, who is simply out of shape, and I'm not even carrying around a ton of extra weight.

Big B - wow! Great job so far! Keep it up ...you'll get there. One of the runners in our 10K thread started about where you were, and he's down in low/mid 200's and has done a 1/2-marathon. Whether it's running or P90x ...you can do it!

big b, thats some serious work, nice.

i just started week 4 (recovery week)and love it. i had a bit of sickness to battle that set me back 4 days or so. i should finish phase 1 in 34 days. pretty happy with that.

i weighed in day 1 at 224. i didnt take measurements or anything like that. i have already gone down 2 belt loops and all my clothes fit much better. im anxious to get to day 30 and weigh and compare pics. not too concerned with the weight loss though.

i think kenpo is the workout i enjoy the most. i kind of enjoy plyo. i get my first taste of the core workout tonight.

I'll throw in my stats here as well. I'm 5'9 150. Didn't do any before pics, but I was in decent shape going into this. My first workout I did 180 pushups and 23 pullups.

Thanks to Random for the kick ### xls he sent. I too didn't take any pics/measurements, but this xls makes me want to do it since it's got so much to analyze.

I'm 6'3 225, but shamefully weak. I have always been a runner since my HS days, so this is a major shock to my body since most of these exercises were foreign to me. Not really concerned about weight loss (even though I am probably carrying an extra 20lbs). I really just want to improve my core strength and think the fat loss will just be a natural byproduct of this workout. Here's to making this a lifestyle change and not just some fad (like all of my other failed attempts).

A note about the beachbody.com customer service...

Orded p90x on a Mon, received at my home on a Fri. Upon opening the box, I noticed the covers of the nutrition guide and workout guide were kind of scratched up and worn looking. I didn't think much of it. But then I noticed the binder holding the dvds was damaged....some pages had pulled free from one of the two rivets holding it together. Again, that didn't bother me too much. I was interested in the videos, not the packaging. But something seemed odd about it- as if I got a used set or something. I pulled out a dvd and sure enough there was plenty of hairline scratches. In fact, all the dvds had little scratches. I put one in and it played fine. But still for $120, I wanted these things new, in mint condition. I called. within 5 minutes, I had a confirmation number stating that I'd be getting a new set sent to me...no questions asked. I asked the person what I should do with the original set I received. He told me that since it was damaged, I should just throw it out. I told him they probably work fine and that I was willing to exchange them for the new set. He told me to not bother with that...throw them out if I don't want them.

Being a little skeptical I wanted to get an update on the delivery of my new set. Used the online chat feature at beachbody.com. Within 5 minutes I was in a chat with a representative. I gave my confirmation number. He said the new set was enroute...and gave the UPS tracking number to me. Checked out UPS.com and sure enough, my new p90x package is on it's way.

A little disappointed the first set seemed like a used set, but kudos to them for simply sending a new set to me.

Ebay time.

This is me too. Been having a serious knee problem, so I have really only been doing chest/back, shoulders/arms and Ab Ripper X (plus a good diet). Seeing results, but not like I would if the cardio was mixed in.I would like to mix in Yoga X... would that be ok on the knee joints?

I'd imagine you'd find out pretty quick if it wasn't. Since there's little impact, and it's mostly balance, I think it would be a lot better than plyo for instance. If there's any discomfort, I'd stop pretty quick.

I have an all new appreciation for Yoga. I had to towel off my mat just as much as I had to towel off my face. Today was the most I have sweat in any of the other 4 workouts. Some of the moves had me literally shaking as I was trying to hold the pose.

Props to anyone that can do the Crane. I could only manage 1 leg, and that was with me shaking like I couldn't believe.

Thank god that the power moves (or whatever they're called) were only for the first half. I was pretty happy to do some of the balance moves after all that. That was until we got to some of the ab work. I nearly threw up. :own3d:

Un......be.........lievable.

Christ almighty, I think I'm actually going to be giving this a shot in a few weeks. ;)

I've already downloaded and extracted the videos but I'm so ridiculously, disgustingly, painfully out of shape that I'm gonna hold off. Going to Florida in two weeks for a golf trip and I don't want to be injured for that. So until then I'm just gonna stretch like a mofo and do some real light work so that hopefully my back won't give out on day 2.

 Don't be shy to try it out. Nobody but the super fit is going to be able to keep up with these guys rep for rep when starting out. Just do what you can and keep going. Hell by the end of day 1, I was so exhausted I was only able to do 4 diamond pushups on the 2nd set. :bag:

 I posted the exact same thing after my second yoga x (about a page ago). My first one was a disaster. I could not balance. Not only was I sore as hell but I also had the DVD playing on my 135" projector. I've since moved my workout area to another TV. But yes, Yoga X is awesome.Completed my 3rd plyo last night and this was the first time I was able to keep pace with the DVD without using the pause button. :excited:

I'm taking the rest of the week off, and re-doing week 5 next week. My ankle is feeling better, and I think I'll be able to do plyo and the others if I wait a few more days.

I still hate the yoga. I've replaced it in my routine with Cardio X, because there is no way I can get myself out of bed to do that in the morning. Cardio X has the worst part about the Yoga in it, but I'm not crazy about the rest either.

Day 5 in the books. Legs/Back/Ab Ripper X is a sick combo. This was the worst I've felt after any of the workouts. I think part of it was a fuel issue. I had the shakes pretty bad until I was able to eat. My hamstrings are incredibly sore. I'm scared to see how I get out of bed tomorrow AM.

So far I think I'd rank these in order of difficulty - hardest to least hard (there's nothing EASY):

Day 1 (chest, back, ab ripper x)

Day 4 (yoga)

Day 5 (legs, back, ab ripper x)

Day 3 (shoulders, arms, ab ripper x)

Day 2 (plyometrics)

I'm still struggling with falling asleep. Last night wasn't as bad, but still taking me a lot longer than normal to fall asleep. Before I started this I would be out in a matter of minutes. Now its an hr plus of lying wide awake in bed. :goodposting:

ETA: I again am amazed at how much improvement I'm seeing in Ab Ripper X. Each time I do it I'm getting a lot more reps in.

:) Be sure to update us when you get in. Are you following the nutrition plan? Getting plenty of protein (recovery drinks)? I was sore the first week (maybe 7 on a 1-10 scale - stairs sucked) but I've been fine since. I still feel liked I worked out, but its not painful to move.ETA- just noticed you've only got 5 days listed. Are you doing day 6 Kenpo?

God. I was so sore this morning I couldn't put socks on. Thank god I work from home.I am using the nutrition guide as loose guide for my diet. With 2 little ones, its just not practical. But I'm using it for guidance. I'm eating 100x better than I used to.I finally got my protein shake/recovery drinks today. Now, I don't know if they made the impact or if Kenpo is just something that fits me well, but I cruised right through Kenpo today and my energy levels at the end were through the roof (I am still sorta 'high'). I got stronger as the workout went. I was sweating like a whore in church, but my energy felt remarkably better today. So I'd tentatively put Kenpo at the bottom of the list (aka easiest). The one thing I noticed in the list is the 2 biggest cardio workouts are at the bottom. That could be attributed to my background in running, but I'm so incredibly out of shape I don't know how much weight to put into that. :shrug:Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to an hr of stretching tomorrow. :thumbup:ETA: Fell asleep pretty quick last night, but woke up 3 or 4 times like I was done sleeping. Took a bit to fall asleep each time.

UpdateCalled to complain on a Fri, got a new set at my house 3 business days later on a Wed. :goodposting: Pretty happy with that. There were no charges listed on the packing list/invoice....i was worried they'd bill me for the new set. With this new set, the guides were wrapped in cellephane (sp?), so they weren't all worn looking. The dvd binder had a different style rivet that held together. Overall, great customer service.

Nice. Good luck starting out. It's addicting.

Not sure if I posted this question or not yet...

Has anyone else noticed that the 2nd day after working a body part is the most sore? I've noticed every day this week that the body part I worked 2 days prior is super sore. Moreso than the day immediately after.

The very tops of my calves, just below the knee and above the 'main' portion of my calves are a solid 9/10 in soreness. The only relief I can find (when walking) is to walk like a cowboy or on my tiptoes.
