Panthers looking at former UCLA QB Drew Olson (1 Viewer)

Sources: Panthers fly in former UCLA QB. Carolina could sign Olson to practice squad

Former UCLA quarterback Drew Olson arrived in Charlotte late Monday night and will take a physical exam for the Carolina Panthers today, according to two league sources.

If Olson passes the physical, it's likely the Panthers will sign him to the practice squad. There's concern that David Carr and Vinny Testaverde will miss practice time this week and the Panthers want a quarterback to help take some of the reps in practice because undrafted rookie Matt Moore is the team's only healthy quarterback.

Olson also has drawn interest from the Minnesota Vikings, the sources said and it's possible he could end up there if he's not signed by the Panthers. The sources said the Vikings may be looking for a more experienced quarterback and they're expected to work out Koy Detmer today and may also bring in former Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke, a Minnesota native for a look.

Despite a productive career at UCLA, Olson went undrafted when he came out in 2006. He went to training camp with the Baltimore Ravens that year and played in NFL Europa earlier this year, but has not been able to land a roster spot.

Still surprised other options like Aaron Brooks and/or Jake Plummer haven't been mentioned. Heck, isn't there an unemployed Detmer out there somewhere?

Since they are looking at past Pac-10 Qb's, what about Randy Fasani? He might be worth a look...

It boggles my mind that they just dont give Matt Moore a start. There is no way on Gods green earth that he is worse than Carr. Carr needs a couple of years off to recover from the beating he took in Houston.

I agree completely, they are incapable of winning with Carr at QB. Give Moore a shot, they have nothing to lose. See what the kid can do in game conditions, maybe he'll surprise them.

Carr needs a couple of years off to recover from the beating he took in Houston.

I differ with you here. Carr took a beating in Houston because he locks onto his primary receiver and holds onto the ball the ball too long. He has never been able to go through his progressions quickly enough. I don't know if its mental or physical, but he just doesn't get it. The other thing is, at least in CAR, is the players have zero respect for the guy. They don't think he is tough and he definitely is not a leader. The difference between Carr or Vinnie at QB is actually visually obvious in the attitude and confidence of the whole team. It's pretty incredible.

wow, they are reaching. I think the best bet is just move D.Will, Foster, & Smith into the wishbone and run a 1920's style attack.

I agree! Though he's made some dumb decisions on the field at times, is surely better than Drew Olson or any other no name QB of the street. Weird, but the about the only real thing I can think of was his speaking out against the NFL for it's reaction or support after Hurricance Katrina. He's more talented than the chumps that are getting signed by Minny or others right now too. Crazy stuff!

Matt Moore looked very nice in the preseason playing for Dallas albiet it was against the 3rd and 4th string defense but he looked good nonetheless. I am shocked that he hasnt been given playing as of yet.

(Rotoworld) Panthers signed QB Drew Olson from their practice squad and waived FB Billy Latsko.

Impact: This may be an indication that Carolina is prepping for Vinny Testaverde (Achilles) to be inactive against Atlanta and Matt Moore to start. Olson would then back up Moore on game day. David Carr has been ruled out.
All Moore, all day.

can Moore get the ball to SS?
That's the $64,000 question. I'm thinking he'll make a conscious effort to get Smith the ball, especially early on. I know he has a good deep ball, but he's also had the most experience with Keary Colbert and Drew Carter in his reps in practice. I'm also thinking John Fox will limit his play selection and use a watered down playbook. There likely will be a lot of running plays - it's easy to hand off the ball. Less chance for error is a good thing. I think it will be conservative ball for Carolina with a mix of Steve Smith here and there. :loco:

I am wondering what Moore can bring to the table. People have said that he throws a nice deep ball. I wonder how well he can make the reads on the slants/quick screens etc. I'm not sure what to expect, but for this week I'm leaving SMith on the bench.
