***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (2 Viewers)

I always really look forward to the Olympics. Setting up DVR for recording. This TV schedule has been pretty useful in finding US teams.

Big fan of all the volleyball, indoors and out. Soccer. Will watch some basketball but not as much. Water polo is always an interesting watch too among the early events.
Water polo is like curling for me, must watch. Wild sport
Flavor Flav practiced with the women’s team. It was awesome.
I need to find that video

Wed/Thu/Fri there is soccer, rugby, and handball.

Didn't realize this; thanks for pointing it out. All this move prep has interfered significantly with my Olympics prep.

What is a good place online for me to map out my viewing? Just regular NBC site?
Sadly, peacock
The fact that you can't catch an event in the middle and start it at the beginning is maddening. Have to wait hours until it's over and they post the replay. So dumb. Otherwise Peacock is ok.

Yeah this drives me nuts. Same thing with Paramount Plus and Champions League soccer. If I miss the start by 10-15 minutes have to decide between just missing that or waiting 2 hours to be able to start at the beginning.

This is a bandwidth tradeoff. And maddening.

MLB.tv let's you do this and the interface and software is ****.

If you have YoutubeTV, they have a few additional channels (some NBC sports, some Paris Extra) - you might not see them on your TV automatically. I added them via the web browser on my laptop.

ETA: only seeing Paris Extra now.

@CletiusMaximus - I know you follow rugby, is Olympic rugby similar to soccer where you are getting mostly youth players?

Olympic rugby is “7’s” which is a fun game but for me not real rugby. It is wide open, very little scrumming or rucking. The good news is that the 7s game is perfectly suited for this US team in that it favors raw athleticism over skill and tactical knowledge. We qualified by dominating the North American tournament, going undefeated and beating Canada in the final.

The US has two games today. The first is against France and we will undoubtedly lose. Not only are they the host, but for reasons no one really understands, the man who is widely regarded as the best rugby player in the world decided to switch to rugby sevens last year so he is suiting up for France in this tournament. Antoine DuPont - it’s an absolute joy to watch him play. This would be like Leo Messi playing soccer for the Argentina beach soccer team or their futsal team - just very odd but oddly interesting.

The second game today is against Fiji which we will also likely lose based on current form but we have a decent shot - a better chance than the early game. Uruguay is tomorrow and I think we may even be favored in that one. Two wins will surely get us through to the knockout rounds.
I don't follow any form of rugby.

Is 2 games in a single day common for the sport in a tournament setting like this?

I’m a cycling dork. HBO max had the giro d’italia. Flawless coverage. Peacock had the Tour de France. Hot garbage. You”d think that nbc would be better at broadcasting a sporting event. Nope.

ETA: Although Bob roll was caught on a hot microphone saying F___! When a spectator tried to come into their little broadcast booth. That was great.

ETA 2: I’m very leery of the Ai voice of Al Michaels that NBC is allegedly rolling out.

Did they not show the end of the Argentina Morocco game on TV? I was watching it (admittedly in the background while on a call) and had no idea that Argentina tied the game in the 16th :jawdrop: ) minute of extra time. What a comeback.

I was watching on youtube TV and whatever channel it was showed the end. Final sequence was insane. Argentina had 4 great looks back to back to back to back on rebounds. First one was saved, second one was saved off the crossbar, third one hit the crossbar, then they finally headed it in on the 4th rebound on the final touch of the match.

damn... I will go look for the goal in r/soccer.

Is DR vs Egypt live for you on YoutubeTV? It iooks like it is delayed on the USA channel, but I have the Telemundo broadcast on live. I wanted to watch Leeds (Leeds Leeds) legend :oldunsure: Junior Firpo play, but it looks like he did not even make the bench... which is hilarious as one of their over 23 players.

USA with a surprise draw against France in rugby.

It's a hard sport to follow but made doubly-difficult by the total lack of urgency announcers seem to have. The USA tied it 12-12 with less than a minute left, and had a conversion kick to win it. The announcers barely even mentioned it, and when they missed the kick it was barely even shown on the screen and they barely even commented, just kind of shrugged and moved on. The were so lackadaisical about it I actually assumed it was the end of the half and not the end of the game.

just FYI, we are chatting about this in the soccer Olympic thread. We posted the goal and it was nuts!

It is common to have multiple games in a day. Games are two 7 minute halves. We used to play 7s tournaments in the summer to stay in shape and would often play 4 or more games.

Fantastic result. I'm in crunch time all morning but will watch later.

With Peacock you can rewind about 90 minutes or so. So if you catch it and can close your eyes and ears you can get back to the start. Maybe.

For the cycling stuff I watch, 6-7 hour total broadcasts, it was maddening.

For me, Peacock is the greatest thing to happen to live and replay coverage of the Olympics. For the first time ever in the 2022 winter games I was able to watch every event I wanted to watch live or on reply in its full glory - not just a few minute snippets of coverage for a 2-3 hour event. I didn't have to watch a single minute of sappy human interest stories about the athletes - just pure coverage of the events that I was interested in. I'm looking forward to this as I know I'll be able to watch what I want, and only what I want, when I want, and not be force-fed the events I'm not interested in.
+1 set up my subscription last month to catch the Women's gymnastics qualifiers. #winning

For those who have lived near enough to Canada, CBC has also been a network that promotes actual events over crappy "human interest" stories. I really don't care if Grandma has been following around some kid, show me the live action. Not hours later when the results are already known.
CBC coverage rules. A few too many Canadians in the summer, but it's fine in the winter.

Ugh. From the few details I could find to read, I figured it must be something like that.

So what’s the story on the US Men’s soccer fielding their scrub lineup in the Olympics?

ETA: sounds like it’s an age limitation. That may explain grandpa Zimmerman out there and a bunch of young players. Must allow a couple older players.

"scrub lineup" is a LITTLE strong (there are probably at least 6-7 guys that have a decent chance to be eventual Sr. team contributors, but maybe not starters) but yes, its a U23 tournament for the men with 3 over-age players available. And on top of that, since its not an official FIFA Senior event, clubs aren't even required to release players. Even if you exclude the guys from the main team that were age-eligible but never gonna play (Reyna, Pepi, Balogun, Scally and others) there were probably several other first choice U23 guys outside of that who weren't released by their clubs.

Didn't see this one coming. Canada? What is the world coming to?
we said sorry so its all good
Oh hell, I forgot all about this story below. This was from a few years ago but also may have involved Canada spying...

This is translated from a French article just released

2024 Olympic Games - Football. Eight months suspended prison sentence for a member of the Canadian staff

After being caught spying on New Zealand training with a drone, one of the Canadian staff members received an eight-month suspended prison sentence

The verdict is in. A member of the Canadian women's football team was sentenced Wednesday to an eight-month suspended prison sentence for flying a drone over a training session of the New Zealanders, their future opponents at the Olympic Games, the government said Wednesday. public prosecutor's office in Saint-Etienne, while Fifa has opened an investigation.

The 43-year-old Canadian national, “tried on Wednesday afternoon as part of an appearance hearing on prior admission of guilt (CRPC), accepted his conviction” according to the Saint-Etienne prosecutor's office. Furthermore, the Fifa disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against the Canadian team and the coach in particular.

Confiscation of all devices

The forty-year-old was arrested on Monday by the police, informed by the supervisor of the Olympic training sites in Saint-Etienne, after having filmed a training session in this New Zealand city using a drone. future opponent of the Canadians on Thursday at Geoffroy-Guichard. The New Zealand team manager had suspended training, and the incident was reported to the police.

The use of the images showed that he had already filmed these players the previous Saturday, in the same circumstances, at the Michon stadium in Saint-Etienne, specifies the prosecution, adding that the suspect admitted during police custody "that the videos would have allowed him to know the tactics of the opposing team.”

The sentence was accompanied by the confiscation of all the seals (drone and electronic video analysis devices) seized in his hotel room, according to the prosecution. The person who piloted this drone is an unaccredited member of the Canadian team, according to the press release from the Canadian committee, which is in contact with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Fifa to determine the measures to be taken.

If that happened in Britain, she's lucky she's not in prison. I would never allow her on an equestrian team again.
