***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (4 Viewers)

American rugby women tough against a great NZ team. Never really watched this sport before. Fast paced and rugged.
Same. Still don't know the rules but it's damn entertaining to watch. I can still see that girl from France scoring at will against the US team. Or USA Maher saying I won't be stoped with her fierce stiff arm.

Unreal finish there. Aussie missed tackle set up an open field for the American.

Question: when the aussie scored their go ahead score, their "extra point" try was from way over on the side with a super sharp angle. The Americans was directly in front of the cross bar. Why the diff?

it depends where you touch the ball down. so touching down between the posts leads to a much easier shot.

Does it matter where you cross the line? Could you cross way outside and then bust *** toward the center before touching down for an easier kick?

It's a weird sport but these are true athletes. Holy smokes. Canada seemed to be in real trouble at the start but that penalty turned the momentum.

Just turned on the women's match and got my answer

Does not matter where you cross. You will often see them run towards the center of the field after crossing to touch

Surprised no gymnastics talk, but they just killed it.

Yeah, the gap is just massive now. They won it by a million even with a few mistakes.

Best part of about Biles and the current generation bringing the "power game" into women's gymnastics is that it basically neutralized China's strategy of bringing stunted "16 year olds" (who looked about 11 and probably hadn't seen their families since they turned their first cartwheel) to the games.

Much easier to watch a sport that is being contested by adults rather than children who are past their prime at 18.

Biles, at 27, is the oldest US gymnast since 1952, I think I heard.

Same with the average age of the team (22).

Kinda seems like US Swimming is in a bit of a down cycle. Obviously they'll win plenty of medals and maybe the program is back-loaded from our perspective.....but not a lot of golds so far that I've seen.

Yeah, saw someone do that right after I posted the question.

Is there any risk? Can something happen before you touch that woud invalidate the try? Or is it just that sometimes they have to dive across the line and don't have a chance to run to the middle?

US Swimming won 30 total medals in Tokyo, 14 of them gold (47%)
This year they have won 14 medals so far, only 2 gold (14%)

I'm not sure how far we are through the program but we are certainly running behind on Golds as a percentage of overall..

Men’s 4x200 freestyle relay finals were pretty exciting. GB with the gold and the US with the silver

Risk is getting knocked out of the back or having the ball stripped before you get the touch.

This happened to me once in my first year playing U17 rugby in New Zealand - crossed the line and tried to get to the middle but was held up and they stripped the ball off me. My teammates were not happy - "yank thinks he's playing gridiron!" I only made that mistake once.

Love that Chase Buddinger is just living his best live with 2nd career beach volleyball. I remember him being an elite HS player before choosing basketball.

Peacock is weird sometimes. I recorded Men's indoor volleyball broadcast of US vs Germany. Only they didn't start showing it until the third set was underway. It had the normal set of announcers.

So I switched over to Peacock to watch the replay. Instead of the normal announcers it had a single woman who was not a particularly good announcer, made worse by the fact she was the only person doing the broadcast so didn't have anyone to converse with for some variety. I don't get why they wouldn't use the actual broadcast version. Obviously the regular crew did the broadcast. I haven't had that happen with anything else, have literally had the same thing on TV and browser at the same time and was always the same announcing team.

Phelps effect being felt. We don't make too many of those. The prominent names in US Swimming belong to the women this Olympics, it seems. It'll be interesting to see how we do in the relays, which I THINk have been a strength of US Swimming in the past.

Also wondering how much an effect this shallow pool is having on our squad. I mean, it's the same handicap for all but US trains in optimal conditions....certainly better than what that Romanian who won gold in the 200 Free trains in. :)

That Romanian dude was incredible. Just training in the local public pool while other people are swimming :lmao:

I didn’t catch this. Sounds incredible. Got a link?

It is difficult to understand how the IOC thinks this is OK.

2 Boxers previously barred from women's events will fight in Paris Olympics

Banned for testing for having XY chromosomes and/or elevated testosterone levels. The IOC response:

For Paris Olympics organizers, female designation in passport key for boxers after world champs DQs
Let's not get this thread locked.

Chromosomal tests does not determine gender.

What gender is Tom Cruise?

Ok, so either NBC was really deceptive in how they portrayed his training, or I completely misunderstood because I can’t find anything on it. Sounds like he has actually trained at a private swim club since he was like 9 from some Googling. My bad.

You have it right. He might have graduated to nicer facilities but his background in training is precisely how you described it. Maybe NBC heavily edited it....

Is it just me or was NBC’s production of the woman’s team gymnastics event one of the worst produced segments in modern sports history. No overall standings after each rotation, no comprehensive discussion of the live scoring, and most aggregiously at the end they don’t say before Biles performs what score she needs for the US on the floor until it is completely done. Then they never show her score.

Total clown show.
