***Paris 2024 Summer Olympics: July 26-August 11*** USA dominates medal count; Finish tied w/ China for most golds - See ya in Milan 2026! (4 Viewers)

There are a few sports that I watch that I absolutely know I would not take any pleasure in participating in.

Water polo is one of them. That's just a big nope from me.

I can watch and enjoy the athleticism, but it just doesn't look like fun to me personally. For me, it would be a constant exercise of avoidance drowning.

watching Womens volleyball, and the daughter of a good old frat buddy, Kathryn Plummer, just got a nice shout out, even though she's on the bench right now

Men’s canoe (aka kayak) slalom finals were awesome. Last guy on the course was from France and crushed everyone else’s time by 5+ seconds. Amazing.

Also caught the end of the men’s skateboarding best trick finals. Kid from Japan comes out of 7th to take the gold, but USA takes silver and bronze.

Great stuff today.

Why is it that the women's skateboard is dominated by young teenagers but the men's competition all seemed to be 10+ years older?

That could be totally off-base but is what I observed during my random skipping through of events yesterday and today.

Her and Skinner have turned this around to give them a chance.
I'm about an hour behind and she just came in,. The one guy can't stop talking about her
Oh, sorry for the spoilers! I should have known from your first post that you were behind some.

Women's brains develop about 10 years sooner.

No worries.

JUst finished 3rd set. It's amazing how dominating she has been. Why wasn't she in to start?

Not sure. My guess is they wanted to start with the proven vets. They won gold in Tokyo.

Youngest daughter is interested in shooting and is glued to all these. The production is quite good on peacock.

I would drown in about 5 minutes and that is without anybody actually trying to drown me from the other team.

Air pistol really shouldn't be an Olympic sport

-edit-

I also think all the shooting sports should involve moving targets or something that makes the competitor have to do some other body movements

For those who follow the sport, the women’s field hockey match between FFA-favorite Holland and Germany is 1-0 with only 10 minutes left.

Maybe like the winter oly sport biathlon, have a triathlon but with an added rifle. . Perhaps they can shoot running/riding/swimming. Maybe the swimming adds a speargun twist to it. I dunno , just spitballing

Japan trying so hard to defend the US. It's like watching a little kid take on his dad on the driveway. :lmao:
If you want a similar mauling, see the aforementioned women's rugby, US v. Japan.

USA women’s rugby not wearing helmets while Japan is, is one of the biggest intimidation moves I’ve ever seen. Imagine you showed up to a game and the other team just didn’t wear equipment? I’d call my mom and tell her to come get me.
Not the same, but similar....

I don't know who is the male swimming announcer (color guy?) but I think he has been doing the Olympic thing for many years. His voice is recognizable. Anyway, I ****ing love the guy's enthusiasm. To him, every race is the most epic thing ever to happen and he makes me feel the same

I just finally got a chance to start watching my recording.

But came in to say, Annie Drews. 6'3" left-handed attacker. Where was she when I needed a co-ed beach partner.

Agreed, he’s better than Gus Johnson, love it.

Man alive…the male swimmers have the most insane bodies. Maybe it’s just because we see them shirtless all the time, probably other sports have athletes with sculpted bodies, but they all have amazing abs, broad hulking shoulders…

:oldunsure:

OK sorry, didn’t mean to get all homoerotic, but wifey was swooning over Ryan Murphy & I was like yeah that’s a great looking dude.

From someone who has watched a lot of shooting so far.

Women can out perform men in nearly all shooting disciplines. Possible due to lower heart rate.

The equipment is probably too good. The shooting suits maybe need to be walked back.

Variable distance would be interesting. Swapping .22 for the air rifles would allow for shots out to 50 meters. Easily.

Volleyball was an exciting match. Too bad they got edged out in the end.

Played volleyball in college with/against a guy who later partnered with Karch on the beach nearer to the end of his career. They won a couple of tournaments together. Love seeing him continue on in coaching after his playing career was done.

of all the olympic sports that i don't understand, and there are a lot of them, i understand rugby the least

just watched a guy get tackled, fumble the ball, the opponent scoop and kick the ball way downfield where no one was.. out of bounds.. and the announcers commenting remarked how amazing the play was by both teams.

no idea what's going on
When we first discovered curling (Vancouver Olympics), we found that reading the rules on Wikipedia was a big help.

It also helped that those announcers were terrific.
good tip

where curling feels like it makes sense, nothing about rugby clicks for me. find myself watching it, though. probably time to learn the rules.

There are only three games left so maybe not worth it at this point. The first thing to know is Olympic rugby is - at best - “rugby lite” because it’s 7s. I watch a ton of rugby but only see 7s during the Olympics and don't otherwise bother because it's not very entertaining for me. However, it is popular, especially in the US. Second, it’s hard to understand rugby if you filter it through the American football lens. Think more soccer or hockey, forget about things like plays and downs. The gameplay in rugby is constant and when a ball carrier is tackled that’s when it gets interesting, rather than being the end of a “play.” When watching 7s, you naturally watch the ball but the key is spacing and creating overlaps so pay attention to how the defenders are lining up across the field as the ball is switched. Attacks are based on trying different things like spinning the ball wide, kicking ahead and keeping it tight to the scrum or ruck until you find a seam.

I thought 3 of the 4 quarterfinals were very entertaining games, with the exception being the dud the US put on against Australia.
i get some of the basics but how the guy being tackled can lay on the ball, then his teammate picks it up and continues play but the opponent .. apparently?.. can't touch it doesn't make sense to me.

then there are throws from OB to a guy who gets lifted in the air by his teammates... where the opposing team also lifts a guy in the air but he can't touch the ball? so it's like some sort of unnecessary performative scene... and there's some penalty for batting the ball the wrong direction?

i finished a game last night where the clock ran out but the winning team had the ball and instead of extra time or the clock ending the game, a player from the winning team ran around and the announcers were yelling for him to kick the ball OB to end the game. total mystery why that's necessary.

what constitutes a turnover or change of possession? seems like any time a player is tackled, there's a scrum and the tackled player's team gets to keep the ball until they score.

the only time i can recall (and forgive me, i don't watch a lot) a change in possession not resulting from a score is if a guy attempts a pass to a teammate but the ball is intercepted in the air and then i'm not even sure if the intercepting team retains possession.

The lineout is a means to put the ball back into play when it goes OOB. The rules on lineouts are designed to give the team doing the throw-in - a strong advantage in keeping possession. They have to throw it down the middle of the lineout but they've secretly called a play so they will be retaining the ball most of the time.

When the clock runs out in rugby, the play continues until there is a deadball. It gets crazy at times as the losing team tries to continue play. Once the winning team gets possession they immediately kick it out to end the game. A player on the winning team who has the ball may not feel comfortable that he can get the ball out on a kick, so may be running toward a sideline or somehow trying to get in position to make sure he gets the ball out of play. If he kicks the ball and it stays in play, that's potentially a terrible mistake. This is very rarely an issue.

The turnover question is harder to answer as possession goes back and forth frequently in open play and resulting from penalties or the ball going out of bounds. For terminology, "scrums" are much more rare than rucks. Possession is very fluid, like in hockey - players are constantly transitioning from offense to defense. In 7s, it is very important that all 7 player on the field are sure tacklers, can all handle the ball well and run with it, and can all kick on the run when needed.
Watching a little bit earlier today, these tackles and rucks and whatnot seem a little bit like a fluid version of American football. Like each time they get tackled they basically can set up a new “down” and “snap” it and start a new play. This continues until the defenders do a good enough of job of gaining possession of the ball or stopping overall offensive momentum or something. Is that close?
Mr R and I want to know how this works in the Paralympics when they are in wheelchairs. How do they form a ruck?

I was about to post how women are better shooters than men a couple days ago, but it appears to be anecdotal and stems from when they first begin they are far more teachable than men. I know a kid that is being recruited by the military academies for shooting and his dad told me most competitive open divisions are filled with women.

However, most scientific studies find there is no discernable difference.

Wow, Sabre seems much more action packed than epee or foil. And this kHarlan woman screams like a banshee after every point. This is a wild match vs balzer.

@Steve Tasker
There's a couple of reasons for that. First, a scoring touch in Sabre is a lot less precise than a scoring touch in Epee or Foil. In Epee or Foil, you need to literally stab the opponent with the very point of the blade. In Sabre, the top 1/4 or so of the blade is valid, so you can score a touch by slashing the opponent with that part of the blade rather than needing a direct point-stab, so to speak.

Sabre and Foil are also governed by "right of way" rules. Epee does not have right of way. They are very complicated and I won't attempt to explain how it works in detail, but the gist is that the fencer who initiates a valid attack first has right of way - i.e. the fencer who is moving toward the other fencer, threatening target area with the blade etc. Only one fencer has right of way at a time, and only the fencer with right of way can score a valid touch. Sabre often has two fencers immediately rushing toward each other, essentially hitting each other simultaneously, with the judge left to determine who had right of way. It's sometimes very difficult to determine who had right of way for an untrained viewer....I have difficulty myself sometimes, and I know how the rules work. It's much faster paced but there's a lot of stopping and starting. Foil will have more action than Epee, but less than Sabre, as it's more difficult to land a scoring touch and has a smaller target area than Sabre does.

Not upset I woke up early to watch Australia-Canada in bball, fantastic game so far. 9 minutes left
