Parsons traded to Green Bay (5 Viewers)

now knocking on the door of a Super Bowl.
Did I somehow Rip Van Winkle my way to week 16? Did the packers lock up the 1-seed while I was asleep or something?

This seems just a smidge premature.
We'll see. They've been trending up and for as young a team as this is have been pretty dangerous. They needed to address the pass rush and did in a big way. Really doesn't feel premature to me.
“Knocking on the door” is a smidge hyperbolic.

It’s not even game 1 yet, my dude. They’re nowhere near the door.

They’re knocking on the bus stop sign, where they’re waiting to board that bus to take the 1000 mile journey to even have a chance to knock on the door, if we’re making analogies here.

And that’s if everything goes right for them.

Sure, this probably makes them better right now. Zero argument there. I’d go so far as to say it definitely improves their defensive pass rush.

Just feels a little over the skis talking about knocking on Super Bowl doors in August is all.

I know it's the thing to :lmao: at Jerry and Steven Jones for their GM job.

But I judge a GM mostly on the team they put on the field.

Outside of injury (that a GM obviously can't control) I usually feel like Dallas has a competitive roster. Again, that's how I judge a GM.

This year they're # 18 per ESPN. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...-ranking-starting-lineups-projection-32-teams

Seems about right. Not great. But not the laughing stock many seem to think they are.
I don’t know where you are coming from with this. No one is laughing because they lack talent. It’s a circus

Where I'm coming from is just what I said. I judge a GM by the team they put on the field. :shrug:Butg
I’m not here to debate the whole “it’s the players job once they take the field” which is silly in its own right seeing how Dallas hasn’t won a thing in decades. But do you really need a refresher on things that have gone on in Dallas under their watch? And if not, it’s your position that none of that matters if they assemble a mediocre roster?

I'm pretty refreshed. But thanks. :)
If you want to be let off the 🪝on a bad take that’s fine. But if you truly feel that GMs/owners should only be judged by the preseason rankings of their rosters (and not the culture or the results) and that Jerry is doing ok…please provide something meaningful here.

No thanks. We'll disagree there on how we judge GMs. All good.

Parsons has always passed the eye test for me. Phenomenal athlete. So fast. I really had no idea of what his box score stats were. He just always seemed really good to me. I took a look and noticed he has been in the league 4 years and has never had single digit sack season. That seems remarkable. Has anyone ever done that? Heck, Lawrence Taylor, arguably a top 3ish all time defensive player, started his first 3 years single digit sacks. His first double digit sack season was year 4. I'm just spit balling the conversation a bit on him I guess.

Trying as hard as you can is usually a good first step (this involves max cash). Then comes making good decisions and the resulting product. If you’re not trying, nothing else matters.

I learned these lessons during the latter half of the Dan Snyder era.

We can disagree. This was an all in move. The pieces are in place and the trade puts them in the conversation with the best of the NFC. They're trending in the right direction, have been the last two years, another year of experience, and one massive upgrade at their weakest link. Eagles and lions, that's the cream of the NFC, Packers are right there with them.

Yep, only this wasn't all-in. This is a last piece of the puzzle to compete now move, but this isn't mortgaging the future like what the Rams did a few years ago. This team is young and under team control.

I’m m with it. The NFC, beyond the Eagles is a bit wide open.

Rams are up there but Stafford has a bad back
Lions are up there but no Johnson or Ragnow
The Commanders are up there,,,in age
The Packers are up there but unproven
The Bucs are up there too but I don’t believe

Knocking on the door of the Super Bowl eh I get what you are saying but ya know in text and all, on here, I can see how easy it is to argue “those words” but I get what you’re saying and I mean, the Packers will be good right? Right?

At first glance and in my opinion it sure appears Packer are a solid #3 now in NFC rankings. So much on Love now. He has the roster to do something if he can take a step forward. Gonna be interesting to watch unfold. Is this one of those scenarios, with this roster, that if he fails now, they may look to move on from him?

If a team is in the playoffs, maybe you can say they’re knocking on the door of a Super Bowl. In the preseason they’re a team that made a deal. I just don’t see those as synonymous.

Whatever. Not a hill I need to die on

Seems about right. Not great. But not the laughing stock many seem to think they are.

They have drafted very well over the last handful of years and sure, they’ve put out decent teams mostly for that reason.

They aren’t doing everything they can to win, though. It’s fairly well documented how they’ve chosen to keep the purse strings tight on the cash, while the teams trying to win will prioritize cash over cap all day long. And on the Dak and Lamb contracts, it emded up costing them more to keep them because they waited until the last possible minute to get them signed. It’s comically poor management and this time it resulted in painting themselves in a corner they couldn’t escape. And it’s not only with players. It’s why they 1- hire retread or inexperienced head coaches and 2- keep them no matter how much they should be fired until their contract expires. It’s saves money. It’s cheap. And it leaves them with no chance of winning a Super Bowl.

As I said, it’d be sad if I could stop laughing long enough to call it that.

Thanks. We'll differ there.

I think they've done a pretty good job of drafting well and assembling competitive rosters.

I won't say any team that does that has no chance for a ring.
What is the effect of signing future players to extensions though? What message does it send that you aren’t willing to pay your BEST DRAFT PICK this decade? Drafting well is great, but you have to eventually sign players and make them happy to stick around.

Jerry really paid a running back like Zeke but wouldn’t pay only the 2nd guy in NFL history to start his career with 12+ sacks in the first 4 years. Crazy.
Jerry Jones stubborn missteps led the Cowboys into this 'Michael' Parsons trainwreck

The Cowboys created this situation for themselves by not paying their core early. Now they have a bad roster and no cap space.

Ok. Would prefer an exchange where you share your reasoning and maybe we end up disagreeing or maybe I see something in your perspective that changes mine. Perhaps it was my tone that kept you from doing that. If so, apologies.

Every GM in the league is judged by results. What does the ranking of the preseason roster matter when we have decades of mediocre results? We aren’t just talking about one year where things looked good on paper but there was bad luck and injuries. There are systemic problems in that organization that are pretty well documented.

Good, me either. Semantics isn't a road I'm gonna go down

I sure do like the looks of a preseason move that might result in knocking on the door to the Super Bowl in a future playoff run since they're now in the conversation with the other contenders though. GO PACK GO!

Not a fan of either team…but honest question…is he actually a generational talent?
He's not, what did Dallas win with him... Nothing, they stunk.

That's a fair point.

It seemed like it wasn't working with him there. I can see trying something else.
That’s revisionist history.

Micah was the apple of Jerry’s eye until he found out he couldn’t hold Micah to a “deal” he negotiated without Micah’s agent. Then he started talking crap about Micah in the media, and Micah doesn’t bury the hatchet and move on when things get personal. And pig-headed Jerry wouldn’t even start negotiating with the agent.

Dallas lost a future HOFer out of owner/GM malpractice. And ANY team would give up 2 1sts (especially if they expect them to be late 20s) for a young guy with a HOF pedigree. Parsons is worth that. Even if DAL hits on bith of those picks- it’s no guarantee those players will have the impact Micah does.

It’s good for Dallas to get 2 1sts. But they never wanted to be in that position, and never would’ve, if it hadn’t been for Jerry’s shenanigans.

but this isn't mortgaging the future like what the Rams did a few years ago
They gave up 2 first round picks. How is that not mortgaging their future? Isn’t that the definition of mortgaging their future?
Almost their entire starting lineup is locked up for 2+ years and only one of them is over age 28

QB- Jordan Love 27
RB- Josh Jacobs 27
WR- Matthew Golden 22 / Jayden Reed 25 (Wicks 24)
TE- Tucker Kraft 25
OL- Jenkins 30 / Banks 28 / Tom 26 / Morgan 24 (Belton 24)
DL- Parsons 26 / Gary 28 / Wyatt 27 (Brooks 25)
LB- Cooper 24 (McDuffie 26)
CB- Hobbs 26 / Nixon 28
S- McKinney 26 / Bullard 23

How much of that $188 is guaranteed will matter, but that is a huge number. Detroit is still better than GB.
136 lol
Thats a lot of cheddar. Are the people laughing at my post Packers fans? Do people think GB > Detroit now?
I won't lie, i was very worried about the lions and don't get me wrong they're very good. Packers needed to be able to get after Goff and that shouldn't be so much a problem as it was looking. Here's to both teams staying healthy and a fight to the finish.
You should be more worried about stopping the run. Micah will not help you there.

Go Niners. ;)
No disrespect meant. Just having fun after a pretty exciting day for my team. It's a big move and it's hard not to see the potential.

Maybe this breaks the curse and Green Bay can return the favor on all those playoff heartbreaks your guys put on the Packers.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that he told Micah Parsons that if the edge rusher stayed in Dallas, he would be playing on the fifth-year option in 2025. That would have paid him either $21.324 million or $24 million depending on the outcome of the grievance he filed. “Basically I think I read where [Parsons] said that I replied, ‘We’re playing under the contract as it exists right now, get ready to play in Philadelphia.’ Correct. That was correct,” Jones said Thursday night.
That's one way to make a "back injury" last much of the season. I think Jones realized that and then traded him.

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...ed-micah-parsons-to-play-on-fifth-year-option

I do think people need to understand or realize that the cowboys organization do not value winning at all costs and have no desire to spend cash more than what the cap allows. It is clear.

7th against the run last year. Losing an old Clark won't hurt that much especially with Wyatt finally showing promise. Parsons isn't a step down from Van Ness or Enagbare. We'll know soon enough.

ETA:
Micah Parsons to the Packers instantly makes them Super Bowl contenders.

I don't care what they gave up: It was worth it.

The Eagles ran for 144 and 169 yards on the ground against the Packers last year.

In the 2 Eagles games vs Dallas where they won by a combined score of 75-13, the Eagles ran for 187 and 197 yards against the Cowboys. Micah played both games.

The sky high expectations remind me of the Russel Wilson trade.

Nah this is Khalil Mack all over again. Except the Cowboys are good drafters, so maybe they'll do more with the picks than the Raiders did... All they ended up with was Josh Jacobs, who the Packers then stole in free agency just as he was entering his prime as well!
I think folks are overlooking the effect of this trade today.

Wow! Cowboys draft well.

Also! Players know the Cowboys, are cheap. Cheap cheap. For sport! What else is the explanation? Jerry is one of the richest owners and this franchise is literally THE most valuable in the world.

“Wow I can’t wait to be drafted by Dallas so when my underperforming peers get paid before me, I’ll just smile and look at that star on my helmet”. Yeah not happening a the modern player. If anything Micah set a new standard

I am not suggesting Jerruh didn't completely **** the bed with this deal. Even best case, if he hits on both picks, they won't be walking HOF-level talents in their athletic prime. Mack trade was dumb and so is this one.

Whatever. Not a hill I need to die on

I respect the heck out of you, HSG, and I'm not picking on you here, but I see this argument a lot from people who argue against "win-now" type deals.

Winning a Super Bowl doesn't involve the same start-to-finish death march as, say, winning the Premier League - where four teams routinely swallow up 90% of the preseason win probability. It's rare that any NFL squad (no matter how good on paper) has more than 15% preseason odds to win a Lombardi. It's a free-for-all involving a lot more randomness than most people care to admit.

In such circumstances, it's easy to pick apart a big, bold move by a team that takes them from, say, a 5% win probability (+1900) to a 7% probability (+1300) - which, purely by coincidence, are the SB60 odds for the 2025 Packers before and after the Parsons trade. But going from 5% to 7% is a 40% increase in championship odds. Ask any NFL GM how much they'd pay for a 40% boost to their Lombardi chances, and I'm sure you'd be floored by some of the answers you get.

If a team is in the playoffs, maybe you can say they’re knocking on the door of a Super Bowl. In the preseason they’re a team that made a deal. I just don’t see those as synonymous.

Whatever. Not a hill I need to die on

I respect the heck out of you, HSG, and I'm not picking on you here, but I see this argument a lot from people who argue against "win-now" type deals.

No offense taken. I’m not in disagreement that they improved their odds.

I’m just sayin I don’t believe any team should be getting themselves fitted for rings in August.

I’m actually not arguing against win-now moves. I’m just not sure this deal will end up being good for GB.

But @The Longtime Lurker has made it clear that they’re excited for the upgrade and not necessarily building a cabinet for another Lombardi trophy, so we’re on the same page.

It’s a fun trade because it’s got everyone fired up & gives us all something to talk about in these long, dark days of preseason.

Can’t wait for the games to count. I have 2 more FF drafts & some very small amount of hope that my Niners will be better this year than last. We didn’t get Parsons.
:sadbanana:

How much of that $188 is guaranteed will matter, but that is a huge number. Detroit is still better than GB.
136 lol
Thats a lot of cheddar. Are the people laughing at my post Packers fans? Do people think GB > Detroit now?
I won't lie, i was very worried about the lions and don't get me wrong they're very good. Packers needed to be able to get after Goff and that shouldn't be so much a problem as it was looking. Here's to both teams staying healthy and a fight to the finish.

he doesn't know the Green Bay system.
Is it to not tackle the QB? Because I think he'll be ok.

Wow playing in the NFL is just that easy. Surprised more people can't do it.
Come on now, any defensive coordinator worth his salt will put together packages that he will adjust to just fine.

IMO the real hurdle is his conditioning. He is a supremely conditioned athlete but, even so it's going to take at least two games before he begins to round into game shape.

But the Packers will be fine, they were a good team before the trade.

They open with two tough games, on paper, Det & Was but, they're both at home and those games were coin tosses before the trade. They follow that with games at Cleveland and at Dallas.

Cleveland looks like a certain victory for GB, and, the smart money is Parsons circled week four at Dallas about a microsecond after the trade.

We all expect him to go full OG LT in his prime in that game. I'll set the o/u on sacks at two and take the over. But, even if they open 1-3, GB has a week five bye. Parsons will be full speed by then and no one will want to face them in the playoffs...or the regular season.

You should be more worried about stopping the run. Micah will not help you there.
7th against the run last year. Losing an old Clark won't hurt that much especially with Wyatt finally showing promise. Parsons isn't a step down from Van Ness or Enagbare. We'll know soon enough.
The Eagles ran for 144 and 169 yards on the ground against the Packers last year.

In the 2 Eagles games vs Dallas where they won by a combined score of 75-13, the Eagles ran for 187 and 197 yards against the Cowboys. Micah played both games.
Eagles had a historic season running the ball. They might have been a bit of an outlier in 2024.

Point was, they didn't lose run stopping ability by adding Parsons, maybe it's a lateral move in that regard, but certainly not a major downgrade and most definitely a major upgrade in getting to the QB which is a must in a division with Goff who will pick you apart without pressure.

That is what I said. The first game or two w he probably won't be in game shape. Sure he will have a few packages, but the Packers aren't dumb they aren't unleashing him game one. He won't be Micah Parsons the all-pro, game wrecker for a couple weeks because of no practice and not knowing ALL the schemes. He will just be Parsons very good.

Detroit has Hutch off a serious injury
From everything I’ve read (and I’ve been following the Hutch news closely as I traded for him this offseason) he’s looking every bit as good as he did before the injury. And he looked like a lock for DPOY before the injury.

Still have to see it in real games, but this one may not be a big concern.
Watch videos of him walking. He has a limp, though I honestly think he will be fine.

Yes but they just spent about 50M a year on one player, albeit a great one. This is pretty much an all-in move, they won’t be able to add a lot more.

I do think people need to understand or realize that the cowboys organization do not value winning at all costs and have no desire to spend cash more than what the cap allows. It is clear.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by where they'd spend cash beyond what the salary cap allows?

Facilities and Stadium seem like the obvious other areas.

Where would you roughly rank the Cowboys' Facilities and Stadium among the 32 teams?

Are you saying it's clear Dallas has subpar Facilities and Stadium?

I know it's the thing to :lmao: at Jerry and Steven Jones for their GM job.

But I judge a GM mostly on the team they put on the field.

Outside of injury (that a GM obviously can't control) I usually feel like Dallas has a competitive roster. Again, that's how I judge a GM.

This year they're # 18 per ESPN. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...-ranking-starting-lineups-projection-32-teams

Seems about right. Not great. But not the laughing stock many seem to think they are.

Crazy.
Do you know who Jane Slater is?
