Pick a Pair/Half Decade Album Draft - Bonus Rounds Thu & Fri - Pick three if you want (1 Viewer)

Moorcheeba -- alt rock/r&b/electronica trip hoppers since the turn of the century hay days. When they added singer Skye Edwards to the project the sound became Sade meets Portishead. Mix in some Jamaican vocals and a little rap, and the first pick below works for me. Only their 3rd best-selling effort from the turn of the century, but after repeated listens, my favorite.

I like the current release even better. Trip Hop lives.

Big Calm (1998)

Blackest Blue (2021) currently on loop

Round 9

Of Skins & Heart 1981- released in US as self titled

I listened to The Church's Of Skins and Hearts on my walk to the farmer's market this morning.  Mrs. E is a big fan so I'm know the band's work and have seen them live but I don't think I've ever listened to their 1981 debut.

Well, I was certainly familiar with The Unguarded Moment which was a rock of the eighties hit and remains a terrific song, albeit one that borrows the riff from Ticket to Ride.  This Church album was more rocking and less atmospheric than their later stuff. There was no E-Bow and not much in the way of guitar effects or feedback. Maybe they couldn't afford the pedals yet.

There were some songs that were jangly and others that sounded more like Power Pop with a persistent clicking rhythm guitar on all four beats.  Steve Kilbey's baritone voice has never been very expressive but it's distinctive and he's always been an interesting and prolific songwriter.  I was busy buying vegetables so I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics so I couldn't tell you if early 80s Kilbey is as weird as the current version.

I was skimming the non-pick posts while updated the spreadsheet.  Was there some connection between TSwift and DJax?

I just gave these a spin and listened to her cover of Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale." Really good stuff.
Yeah, I think I just saw her on a Pitchfork (or similar) list of best albums of the week or  month and for whatever reason gave Are We There a spin. I really liked it and found myself coming back to it over and over. I think noticed it made a lot of the year lists as well so I was happy to see she had been so well received. It was a 5 year break before the next album which was maybe too long to fully capitalize on the success but Remind Me Tomorrow managed to match the quality and lift it to a new sonic level. Both are really strong albums all the way through and I had no idea how to pick which songs.

Doesn't matter. A compilation is a compilation.

There are other records that would have been drafted before if compilations of non-album singles were allowed.
I mean, isn't any album of previously unreleased songs just a compilation of unreleased songs?

Also the convo yesterday about what era of music to leave behind, was it late 90s and early 00s when "every" artist and producer was just pushing to make the loudest CD possible and the dynamics of every album were total garbage? I could do without that music.

Two of my favorite shows were two very different Neil Young shows. One was him, solo, mostly on piano, at a small theater in Boston (1992 maybe?). The other was him rocking with Booker T and the MGs (1993 I think?)

It's been the norm for so long that I've gotten used to it.

Actually, Pip was making the observation that this thread had gotten derailed by talk about Taylor while the Gabby Petito thread had been derailed about sports betting. Then somebody chimed in that it was DJax and Gekko combining to totally derail that thread, and this thread got to gossiping.

My tough decision tomorrow and Friday is do I take 3 albums just because I can or stick to the 2 because I don't want to potentially put the playlist out of balance?

If you're not kidding, then you'll have an even number anyway that doesn't end in zero. *shrugs*

That assumes you still pick two from each.

I meant more in terms of adding an album that maybe I don't like as much/period of an artist I like less just because I am able to add it. Would it lower my quality or enjoyment or flow?

I feel that big time and I haven't even MADE a playlist yet.  At least four or five of my favorite records all time are still available.  I'll make a move tonight.

Just joshing - I have nothing against her and admittedly know little of her material. That's largely because I have sons rather than daughters.
I have 4 sons and 1 daughter.  My oldest son, wife, daughter and I all love Swift.  I bought my oldest a record player as a graduation gift and some records (gosh dang, those are spendy!) and he's added a bunch more.  Swift's Red and Folklore are two of his records and they sound amazing on vynle (sp?).

Big big big fan and yes, my daughter is 9 and was my gateway to Swift 2 years ago.  I think she's brilliant.

My favorite part of these has become the playlists. Mine, others, the collabs. Makes it easy to find something to listen to that is often neither too familiar nor too unfamiliar.

I thought about this for my picks and decided yes it would. I could ('ve) pick(ed) several that would get a lot of love here, but not so much from me. There's an artist I'm very surprised is available, and who would have nicely filled in my vacant halves... but I just don't listen to him/her/or them anymore. Monstrous genius talent to be sure.

Both of Bruce Willis' albums come from the late 80s

You want "vinyl"

Not an easy word by any stretch. I still get the fits with "rhythm," a sometimes-bastardized word, as Eephus pointed out earlier in the thread.

I'm surprised there aren't any well known artists on Spotify going by the name of (The) Vinyls, Vinells, Vinyelles, etc.  There is Divinyls of course but the only acts I found with a vinyl variation name have under 1000 plays/month.

I was typing out the words "Think of the Divinyls" as a mnemonic device. Then I typed out the word "devine," totally brutalizing the mnemonic, and bollocksed it all up.

That, and I was trying to describe the song, and I got all modest for once.

That was actually the real reason. That and no spotlighting.

I think this is the third pair drafter where the self-titled album is the later of the two.  Can't remember the others though.
Random feeling of mine: I don't like it when bands have a self-titled album. Self-titled song doesn't bother me but self-titled album seems to show a lack of creativity.

Bonnie Raitt

Give It Up (1972)

Nick of Time (1989)

Another distaff selection bringing the women up to four albums for me.

Give It Up is the work of a 22 year old hippie chick just starting her career. The record is rooted in the Blues but it's a joyous affair with arrangements that throw in the musical kitchen sink.

Nick of Time was Raitt's career comeback after being dropped by her record label. She was pushing 40 and newly sober at the time.  The record became a huge hit on AOR radio during the era where boomers were buying lots of CDs. At the Grammys, it beat out Full Moon Fever and The Traveling Wilburys for album of the year. It's a terrific album made up of material that fits her perfectly.
