Pink Floyd -- there's never been anything better, ever (1 Viewer)

Having seen both Brit Floyd and TAPF on pbs in concert, I like Brit Floyd a bit better. Their voices sound a bit more like the original band.

Brit Floyd is the best Floyd cover band I've seen - better than The Machine.

The guys in BF actually came from Aussie Floyd. All that said, I haven't seen Aussie in quite some time and plan on seeing them this fall - so my opinion could change.

They're pretty much the same thing from what I've seen/heard. Some like 1, some the other. Both are certainly well ahead of The Machine. As are the ticket prices. Of course can't seem to get either one down here for whatever reason. Caught TAPF in PA.

I'm sitting at a hotel cigar bar in Tokyo drinking a beer at the end of a long day and just popped in my headphones and Spotified up DSOTM. God, it's really hard for me to imagine a better piece of music. When the opening chords of Breathe hit, it's like the most beautiful thing ever. And that's just the start of the album. I think I going to order up a Cuban cigar and some Cuban rum to dip it in and have a high brow recreation of my college love affair with this album. Because it's just so, so good.

How is Time not a perfect song? I mean come on?? The lyrics just slay me, and the music is just a massage on your inner ear.

Pink Floyd

Time Lyrics

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again.

The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way

The time is gone, the song is over,

Thought I'd something more to say.

Home, home again

I like to be here when I can

When I come home cold and tired

It's good to warm my bones beside the fire

Far away across the field

The tolling of the iron bell

Calls the faithful to their knees

To hear the softly spoken magic spells

I always thought it was "if you hear someone whisper you're dying," which totally exploded my brain in college. I was disappointed to learn it doesn't say that. But whatever, you don't pick a fight with greatness.

Us and Them was my favorite part of the album I think. So beautiful, and you just know Eclipse and Brain Damage are coming, and it's such an awesome thing.

All that you touch

All that you see

All that you taste

All you feel

All that you love

All that you hate

All you distrust

All you save

All that you give

All that you deal

All that you buy

beg, borrow or steal

All you create

All you destroy

All that you do

All that you say

All that you eat

everyone you meet

All that you slight

everyone you fight

All that is now

All that is gone

All that's to come

And everything under the sun is in tune

But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

There is no dark side of the moon really.

Matter of fact it's all dark.

What an incredible and sobering reminder this album is that life is passing at this very moment. Your time is so limited and you get so caught up in the rat race that you don't even realize it.

I just heard on the radio that they have a new album coming out in October. Sounded like it was unheard instrumental stuff recorded with The Division Bell album.

My fav memory of this song was walking past Rockefeller square ice rink with this playing. My only time there so quite an impression.

Geez you sound depressed today. Enjoy that drink and cigar.

You're in Virginia, no? Pretty sure that TAPF has played in Charlottesville - I go there on business from time to time, and recall in the past seeing them on schedule at the Jefferson Theater. Could be wrong though - may have only been The Machine.

The Wall is my favorite overall album and I am just an 80s metal head. I cannot argue with the greatness that is Pink Floyd.

My dad was a huge Floyd fan growing up so I had access to most of the stuff since I was a kid. Never listened to the early Sid stuff though. I watched the Wall when I was in the 3-5 year old range (which probably wasnt good) and each album gives a different feeling.

Dark Side is trippy but a light feeling. Floating through space is an appropriate analogy.

Wish you were here takes you all over the place. Beautifully constructed "small" album.

Animals has a cocky screw you anti government feel to it.

The Wall builds layers upon layers of foreboding and depression. You feel Pink as if you were him until finally the release after the trial. Unbelievably emotional album.

I tried the Gilmore stuff but it didnt capture me like those 4 did.

Correct. Every time I remember to check there's no dates in Va (their most recent tour had/has no Va dates). Even Cville is a bit of a drive (but very doable) if they did perform there. The Machine has definitely been here several times. Maybe I should check in on them. :)

Great band. Even if you aren't into them you have to give it to them for creating some unique music, especially for the time. I always have respect for bands who do something different from everyone else.

Australian PF is on now on PBS, again. I like Brit Floyd better. I don't like how TAPF puts a spin on PF's music to make it their own. Would rather hear PF, not a remix with your stuff in it too.

:lmao:

Welcome to the 70's, man. Enjoy the ride.

It's like starting a thread in the Shark Pool after watching an Earl Campbell highlight video. ZOMG! This guy is so good you guys! You don't even know!

Ahhhhh, the Tyler Rose. Even a Sooners' fan has to acknowledge his greatness. If you disagree with me you're a fool and don't understand the world.

Sitting alone on a balcony in Orlando smoking a cigar and listening to their catalog of music from the 1970's, and I'm having a really hard time coming up with any better music that has ever been made. Just absolutely incredible.

Plenty of better music. Bach and Miles would be a good start. I'd love to join you for a smoke and some music on a Florida balcony. Sounds great right now.

Best of the 70s? I'm not the biggest Floyd fan, but I'm coming up blank on anything to top that.

Come up with any consecutive ten years of music from anyone ever. Not possible.

If you told me I would have to die somewhere alone and I could have one series of one bands albums with me, this is it. That's how I'd like to go one day. If there is anything more incredible, moving, perspective-inducing, powerful, I've not heard it.

Obviously music is very personal but I would put Schubert against Floyd. He died at 31 so almost his entire catalogue of music came within a 10 year period. 600 vocal pieces, 7 symphonies, operas, a large amount of liturgical works and chamber music. Most within 10 years. Enough to put him on the same stage as Beethoven and Brahms.

And I hear Katy Perry and Wiz Khalifa playing in many cars that go by. Are we making that the criteria for great music?

wasn't my point.

And no

PF FTW

You had to go back 150 years to take even your best stab at this. And not close.
Enjoy the stogie. Floyd is great. It's not the apex of music, but it can be the apex of music to you. Like I said, Id love to be on that balcony with you.

Hmm

My point is Floyd is better then the rest

Oats is on point with this one...

PS...Schuberts String quartet in D Minor is grossly underated!

Otis, my man!, I love The Floyd and am an emissary of their awesomeness but I have to lay plain the following fifty years of greatness from none other than Bobby D. From Mr Tambourine Man to It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleedin' to Sad Eyed Lady of the Low Lands to Tangled Up in Blue to Jokerman to Most of the Time to Things Have Changed to Thunder on the Mountain, Dylan has written and performed material that at the Least matches the best of Pink Floyd's output.

It's basically Ali-v-Foreman with Foreman being the well accomplished second tier but still the second tier.
