Pitt - Cin Weather Concerns (1 Viewer)

With bad weather in store for today's game, what are the Sharks doing regarding players?

I think all RB's in the game must be moved up and QB play will be limited, not that anyone was starting Fitz anyway. WR's could be a sneaky play as Pitt did a fine job last week playing the dink and dunk game against the chargers.

Cin will have to pass to stay in the game, but i'm not sure how bad the weather will be. If its not bad, with Johnson and Chatman not out, Housh could be in for a lot of targets as he usually gets all the underneath stuff anyhow.

Thoughts?

If the forecast calls for snow I'd bump Parker. Passing should be limited so the shoulder issue may not be as big a factor. IDK about Benson and Moore. Pitt could stack the line which would keep Benson quiet. Moore's speed will be lost on a slick field. Housh gets a bump with the CJ news but Henry could be the sleeper. Fitzpatrick is still the one throwing the football. Ward seems to do well in poor weather. Pitt Def should be a no brainer start IMO. My 2c's.

In the first two Thursday night games, one QB in each game has put up an absurd number of points. First Cutler and then Cassel. Will the string be broken tonight or will Roethlisberger make it three straight (given how unlikely it probably is for Fitzpatrick to do it)?

Was contemplating it earlier this week, but this is the final straw. The #2 ranked pass defense, the bad QB, the loss of Chad Johnson to take some coverage, and the bad weather is too much. I am sitting Housh for Avery against Da Beloved.

Not windy at all here right now. A few flakes floating around. I know that can change, but I really don't see the weather being that big of a factor tonight.

;) Tonight's forecast calls for temp around 30, winds around 10 MPH, a few snow squalls with less than 1" accumulation. No big deal.

I work less than a mile from Heinz Field. RIght now the wind is about 5mph and there is barely a flake of snow falling.

Personally, I think it has gotten a little cooler during the day.

If I had any players tonight, as of right now, I would not consider weather a big factor. Of course, we have 6 hrs until kickoff.

The field was starting to look a little poor last week too. I can't imagine it's gotten any better, and that bodes well for the WRs. I think the entire Steeler passing game does very well tonite. Parker gets his, and Cincy does alright passing (given the personnel) thanks to the pass rush being slowed a step by the worsening field conditions. Steelers are passing very well vs. teams with a weak pass rush too.

It's been pretty cold all week, so the field should be firm, not real muddy. It should be fine.
They showed some closeups of the players' feet last week, and it's starting to look more and more like the green-painted-dirt we're all used to this time of year. Maybe not muddy & sloppy, but firm dirt is not exactly great traction either. Should affect the pass coverage more than the pass rush, but it was definately not even 70% grass.

Is the field condition likely to affect FWP significantly? I'm not sure. Footing seems to be somewhat egalitarian in its effects - defenders (LBs, esp.) will have the same trouble cutting to stop the run.

I'm playing Santonio and hoping for the best.
I'm rolling with Santonio also. My other options are Mark Bradley and Vincent Jackson. I got a good feeling about Holmes tonight. So far I've been about 80% correct with my "feelings". Let's hope for the best, good luck.

I don't think it adversely affects Parker's game. He's not real shifty, and it's the change of direction that is hampered most by bad fields. His speed shouldn't be a problem, but I'm a little concerned with his ball security in a cold game. Poor footing is always a bigger detriment to the defense, as they have to react to what the offensive player is doing. WRs typically overperform on bad surfaces 'cause the DB's can't recover as quicly.

I dont know if FWP is a great play like most think. Cincy has been tough against the run lately for some reason. I know they held MBIII and westbrook to pedestrian numbers. I think Ben is gonna have to throw the ball tonight.

I agree with ball security being a concern, but mostly, in my mind, for Big Ben. Since he has a penchant for being sacked often, there might be a couple of lost fumbles during the game. Also, Fitzpatrick might have trouble holding on to the ball when Harrison et al. crash down on him, so I'm expecting a few short field scoring opportunities.

Great replies Sharks!!!

Let's keep the thread going until gametime, especially with the weather/wind being updated.

I think the Steelers learned something last week with Big Ben and the short routes. It reminded me a lot of what they used to do with short passes and let the WR's get the YAC yards (ala the Patriots in their Super Bowl years). Each team will need to figure a way to pass the ball because they can both shut down the run (Cincy as of late).

As long as its not a blizzard, the passing game should hold. If the snow starts sticking to the ground or the wind picks up past 10-15mph, then we have a problem.

Doesn't everyone remember that snow game in Denver a few years back where Porter and Curry both put up huge numbers? Snow, as long as it isn't bitterly cold and windy, is a huge advantage for the offense, including the passing game.

Really close for me too, but right now, rolling with Holmes over Cotchery, who faces a stout TEN D.

For me, I'll take a little weather at home against a crappy D over a player on the road against a stout pass D in what is likely to be a low scoring affair.

In my mind, unless it's really windy, a little snow helps the passing game as it slows defenders down when they react to cutting routes. In the accursed Tuck Rule game, snow was coming down fairly well. Still, Brady went 32/52 for 312 yards -- 238 in the second half when the snow was coming down harder. Patten went 8 for 107.

Field still scares me. Can see it getting torn up in large frozen chunks...

If the field starts coming up in chunks the league should drop the hammer on the Steelers in a hefty fine for not installing Field Turf. No sense in players getting injured for stupidity.

Watching NFL Total Access and they just showed the flag....lotsa wind already. Also, the said it feels like 9 degrees. Start the Ds and bench the WRs/QBs unless it is Ward & Housh. They will benefit with the short passing games.

Holmes to my bench...but not just b/c of the weather; he's been sucky, plus I see Pitt running it 40 times tonight. Will have to decide between Cotch & VJax. Good luck to those starting Holmes tonight

Sounds like a lot of hype. I was just outside. It's still 33 degrees with light winds. A gust from time to time, but nothing that would be considered windy. Wind chill is probably mid 20s right now.

I'm benching Holmes, good luck if you don't have a better option.

Have to choose 3 between Ward, CJohnson (TEN), TO, and Royal. Ward has been the hot hand, but if the weather gets nasty who knows.

Hoping to take a big lead with FWP, Ward, Woodley and Steelers D. Lets go Steelers

Only change would be B edwards for Ward and Ill take my shot with Hines over Edwards and a fractured finger QB
