My opinion is they are underestimating COL. I'm trying not to get involved in the finances since it's their journey. If they end up with $100k in debt then they do. He has an honorary degree from a Big 10 school so should do alright eventually...just maybe not in the NE? He works in that same college town so there are cheap co-living options. Also, both parents are 60-85 minutes from him for weekend life should he choose.
Well, as I indicated, we took on six figure debt, but wouldn’t have made a different decision, even in hindsight. And as for sitting this one out, our parents had no say in our decision, nor did we consider even consulting them. So I think you’re taking the right approach.

But that said there's nothing wrong with mentioning that you ran the situation by a few friends and providing them with some fatherly wisdom/advice.

Update: I really appreciated the feedback in this thread. We moved our daughter and her husband into a studio in uptown NYC (125th/Broadway) so she can attend Columbia this fall. Her hubby has been active with job search in actuarial, software, or biz analyst so hopefully something breaks for him soon...such a smart young man. I'm very glad that they are together but still concerned about the financial hole they may be digging for themselves. With that said, better to try this now rather than after they had a kid or two, right?

I have an entry level at 45K in Operations if he's getting desperate. Definite opportunity to grow on the supply analytics.

I was just up there yesterday...forgot what a pretty campus it is.

I hope they're settling in. They wouldn't ever, but if you need anything info-wise from a local perspective, don't hesitate to ask.

If you ever decide to visit, you should know that there's a very good beer bar right by your son in law's new job called...Rattle and Hum.

I've actually never been to the west side location, only the east side one that's now closed but I'd assume they're comparable.

Going back 10 years or so it was one of the only places with a real enormous list.

Heh, I went to the Rattle and Hum on 33rd st when a coworker and I decided we were too old for the millenial team building nonsense foisted on us by our boss.

I also ducked out from my previous job to watch some of the NCAA tourney there.
