i ask because i have no real knowledge of him. why is he a hard liner? seems like they are spinning he is a breath of fresh air on CNN right now.

i love the pick simply because my kids name is John Francis. :)
all jesuits are hard-liners.they take a vow of poverty and stuff.

it's the hard core sect of priests.
Are you thinking of Franciscans? I think they're more into poverty than Jesuits are (though Jesuits do take a vow of poverty).Jesuits are known, more than anything else, for being intellectuals; and in my experience they tend to be more progressive on social issues than other orders of Catholic priests.
:goodposting: Many of the Catholic universities are run by Jesuits.
Correct. The Jesuits are the "teaching" arm of the Catholic faith. They set up many of the Catholic universities in the US and Europe. The Franciscans are the ones who generally live by a code of poverty. That said, a Franciscan brother married my wife and I and he characterized his brotherhood as the "hippies of the Catholic church" in modern times. They had rigidity in certain beliefs, but were relatively progressive in terms of some social issues.

"poverty and humility"

They really went with a younger generation...trade in an 80 something for a guy 76, I'm sure he can relate to the new generations. The media should just ignore the Vatican, they have no presence in Europe, a lot of the United States, of course they turn to South America.

Poverty and Humilty...go #### yourself.

This pope supported the use of condoms to prevent the spread of disease. That is jaw dropping stuff if you ask me. And beyond liberal for a cardinal of his age.

 the youngest Cardinal is 53 & he was elevated last year and the average age is 72. If the new Pope was CArdinal Scola from Italy all the :hophead: :hophead: would've complained about the old power. This is a monumental change, 1st Pope from the new world . Choosing the name Francis is tipping his hand already.with all sincerity , go #### yourself

This is a worn out religion that has controlled the masses of uneducated folks since around the 3rd or 4th Century. So high are they, the perpetual thought is this actually rolls all the way back to Peter himself, think about that. They have gotten way too much press for replacing an old man with another old man. 76 is too old to be in charge of anything let alone a World Church. Most folks that age are halfway to being senile if not there already. Why are you taking it personal? I grew up Catholic, was forced upon me from the age of 1st light so excuse me if I continue to extend the bird at the new pope.

So you're extending him the bird because you grew up catholic and the media gave the process too much coverage? I have no idea what that 2nd sentence means either. Are you drunk?

Very risky for the new pope to have the old pope off in exile; sooner or later Benedict, or one of his sons, will come to reclaim his throne.

Do you happen to have a link on that?
It looks like that may have been a false alarm.Early versions of the Wikipedia entry for Pope Francis said that "He supports the use of contraceptives to prevent the spread of disease," citing this article, which says no such thing. Later versions of the Wikipedia page said that "Some rumors suggest that Pope Francis would permit the use of contraceptives to prevent the spread of disease," citing this webpage. I don't see anything there on the subject, but the page keeps crashing my browser.

The current version of the Wikipedia entry does not contain any mention of any support for contraceptives by Pope Francis for any reason. It mentions only that he opposed the free distribution of condoms in Argentina.

Not Catholic so I don't care too much, but this kind of stance pretty much sums it up for me:

In 2010 he asserted that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children.

In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires [about a bill to legalize same sex marriage], Bergoglio wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."

Father of Lies = Satan :loco:

Meet the new boss; same as the old boss.

Look are you guys really expecting to have a pope in favor of gay marriage or gay adoption or gay anything???

The Bible damns homosexuality. It's not exactly equivocal about it. Furthermore, Catholicism has always taught that the purpose of sex is to produce children; any other purpose (such as pleasure) is a sin. These beliefs are central to their religion. They're not going to change.

I'm disappointed this thread - nay, the entire FFA - has not one HABEMUS PAPUM!!Otherwise, nothing surprising.

I was raised, and by a fingernail, still self identify as Catholic.

But whole S-house ain't worth a damn until they take a serious step FROM THE TOP, to address and take SERIOUS proactive steps to prevent the diddling.

I mean, Hell Toupee, I haven't read through this whole thing, but how do you begin to rejoice until we murder that elephant in the room and hang his tusks as a warning that if this stuff EVER goes on again, the priest will not be protected, they'll be toast.

Since it doesn't appear to be true seems like it's a good question to ask.

I was skeptical when he was quoted calling condoms "Jimmy hats."

Yeah, that's me pre beer-teets.I love Pope Hides Pedophiles Guy because he makes an otherwise boring commute amusing. Here's his Wiki page...

John Wojnowski

John Wojnowski (born 1943 in Warsaw, Poland) is an anti-pedophile activist who has maintained a one-man protest outside the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington DC since 1998. Wojnowski, a retired ironworker, stands on Massachusetts Avenue during afternoon rush hour holding signs with slogans such as "My Life Was Ruined by a Catholic Pedophile Priest" and "Pedophilia: Catholic Clergy's Sordid 'Professional Secret'".

Since thousands of commuters pass the traffic signal at the Vatican embassy each day, Wojnowski's protest is familiar to many Washington, DC and Maryland residents. The initial reaction to Wojnowski was somewhat hostile with many passing motorists yelling curses and some even physically threatening him. He reports that at one point his sign was ripped from his hands, thrown in the back of a pickup truck and stolen. However, media focus on the Catholic sex abuse scandal has sometimes led to a more supportive reaction. However, many remain angered at what they perceive as anti-Catholic bigotry.

Note: He's definitely there more than just afternoon rush hour like the Wiki page says.

The whole process is archaic and most of what they do over there is disturbing IMO. And to the others who seem to always want to make ridiculous comparisons. Just because I am tearing the Catholic Church apart doesn't mean I feel much different about several of the other religions but the topic of the thread was the pope so why start trying to compare it to anything else?

So you're extending him the bird because you grew up catholic and the media gave the process too much coverage?
Do you make folks repeat everything they say? You are a farce anyways, nothing you post is close to a real story, nothing but games to try and mess with folks here and see what you can get away with.

Nope. I expect the Catholic Church to keep being ###-backwards and can only hope it becomes less relevant. This week is a stark reminder that people still pay far too much attention to these clowns that lead the church.

I was actually trying to get you to expound on your point and maybe have a conversation about why you seemed so angry. But I see you'd rather not only be a dumb#### but a ######## too. So suck it from the back loser.

Right back at ya.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In his first public Mass, Pope Francis urged the Catholic Church on Thursday to stick to its roots and shun modern temptations, warning that it would become just "a compassionate NGO" if it forgot its true mission.

The Argentinian pope, addressing cardinals in the Sistine Chapel where he was elected pontiff on Wednesday, said the Church should be more focused on the Gospels of Jesus Christ.

"We can walk all we want, we can build many things, but if we don't proclaim Jesus Christ, something is wrong. We would become a compassionate NGO and not a Church which is the bride of Christ," he said, speaking in Italian without notes.

"He who does not pray to the Lord prays to the devil. When we don't proclaim Jesus Christ, we proclaim the worldliness of the devil, the worldliness of the demon."

Francis took the helm of the 1.2 billion-member Church at a time of strife and intrigue, with the Vatican rocked by a string of sex abuse scandals, by accusations of infighting within its central government and by allegations of financial wrongdoing.

"We must always walk in the presence of the Lord, in the light of the Lord, always trying to live in an irreprehensible way," he said in a heartfelt homily of a parish priest, loaded with biblical references and simple imagery.

"When we walk without the cross, when we build without the cross and when we proclaim Christ without the cross, we are not disciples of the Lord. We are worldly," he said.

"We may be bishops, priests, cardinals, popes, all of this, but we are not disciples of the Lord," he said.

He said those who build on worldly values instead of spiritual values were like children building sand castles on a beach. "Then everything comes crashing down," he said.

His sermon was a stark contrast to that of his predecessor, Pope Benedict, who read out his first homily in Latin in 2005, establishing his broad vision for Church.

Benedict abdicated last month, saying he no longer had the strength to lead the world's largest organization.
