Pope Francis 12.17.36 - 4.21.25 (1 Viewer)

some people won't be happy until there is a new antipope
Steve Pinker may be the current anti-pope. He was killing it at reddit yesterday.
astrongs 22 hours agoDo you find your understanding of the mind negatively affects your own happiness? I mean does your deterministic outlook sometimes make life seem arbitrary and pointless to you, and elation just some chemical reaction.sapinker 22 hours agoQuite the opposite -- I find a naturalistic understanding of human nature to be indispensable to leading a wise and mature life, and it is often exhilarating. Wisdom consists in appreciating the preciousness and finiteness of our own existence, and therefore not squandering it; of being cognizant of what makes people everywhere tick, and therefore enhancing happiness and minimizing suffering; of being alert to limitations and flaws in our own judgments and decisions and passions, and thereby doing our best to circumvent them. The exhilaration comes from understanding that we are a part of natural world; that deep mysteries can be explained; and that the world -- including our own mental lives -- can be intelligible, rather than a source of superstition and ignorance. Yes, mortality sucks, but given that it exists, I'd rather know that than be kept in a childlike state of delusion.

Some of the jokes are good. But you know they had a real chance to bring a reformer. There were Cardinals just as disgusted as anyone else over the scandals. This church is just a running scandal at this point and to bring in this guy shows they are in no hurry to clean it up.
why do you say this?
This guy is an old school hardliner so he isn't going to be making waves for the few years he has left. And the part about the running scandals is pretty self evident. We have Cardinals living over huge gay bathhouses and Cardinals resigning over gay priest orgies. We have a church bank that is complicit in money laundering and that just scratches the surface of the financial improprieties. And last but not least there is the altar boy scandal. This church is in trouble and it needs reformation not more of the same.

Isn't that true about all of the Cardinals?

This is just a short term move, expect a more (relatively) revolutionary pope in the near future.

No. The Cardinals aren't monolithic in their positions. Several Cardinals have come out in the last week calling for change to all those things I mentioned. There are some guys who are younger and can see the writing on the wall. They want to clean up the bank and deal with all these sexual controversies. There were better choices IMO but I'm not Catholic so as long as they are happy rock on I guess. Just don't be surprised when it all goes to hell.

We still have to churn through 2-3 Popes to get to these guys. Things are going in the right direction

Not since I quit religion at age 12. But yeah the Southern Baptists don't like Popes. Really if I had to choose between the two I'd probably go American Catholic, kiddie issues aside at least the Catholics acknowledge science instead of running from it forever.

I should clarifythey was a lot of reports and opinions, not the church obviously

maybe this was another "punt and play defense and maybe we are ready to change in a few years" move

I hope you're right. The Church can be a force for good and right now it is seriously hamstrung. I hope it doesn't take as long as all that. We need as many social forces for good as we can get.

I like the south american pick...

I don't like the fact that he's 76/77

I was hoping they would pick someone in his 60's that would be around 10-15 years.

This guy probably has 7-8 tops.

I don't know what type of job pope is compared to like a president... but you'd think someone in their 50's or 60's would bring the combination of some experience but also have a little more life vigor to do the job.

then again, I think you have to be pretty old just to get to Cardinal.

i ask because i have no real knowledge of him. why is he a hard liner? seems like they are spinning he is a breath of fresh air on CNN right now.

i love the pick simply because my kids name is John Francis. :)

Well I guess you could ask the folks that said his time as a Cardinal has been reminiscent of the Inquistion. I assume that is at least a bit hyperbolic but still the non-official read on this guy is he is very much in the mold of Benedict, a seriously conservative, old school type and is basically more of the same.

I pass the below guy every evening on my ride home from work. I always give him a honk as a sign of support, and because I feel bad for him because he's out there every day and I know his story from chatting with him. I'll stop and chat with him today to see what his take on the new Pope is.

I really feel bad for anyone that dedicated to any cause... people who march in front of planned parenthood (we see that pretty consistently).

Don't you have better things to do protestor guy? Lots of good comics to read, lots of cool sports to watch, lots of stocks to analyze to make some dough.

there are alot of stupid things we all do with our time, but this seems amongst the stupidest.

This depends on what you mean by hard line. Most people use it to mean they take a hard line vs. any changes, or softening of rigorous adherence to traditional practices.Jesuits might be hard core, in terms of their personal discipline and commitment to their faith. But philosophically, they are traditionally among the most liberal of the priesthood, working hard to advance social justice.

Not sure who 'they' is, but I wasn't saying this last time. After this one-lunged pope who doesn't like people goes down quickly, they'll take the more (relatively) revolutionary path imo, like they did with Pope John Paul II after the quick death of Pope John Paul I.

I would assume that once you make it to the "big leagues" of being part of the Conclave you assume there is some chance - even if it is small - of becoming the Pope yourself. As such, I imagine that the guys in the room have been researching/studying/thinking about what name to take should they be selected. The CNN site has some people getting rowdy about how significant choosing Francis is. I wonder at what point this guy said, "If it's me, I'm choosing this name..."

If it were me, I'd pick a name like Elvis. Because you know, why not?

You got it!He's out there almost everyday strategically positioned right in front of the Vatican's American embassy. (Technically, The Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the United States)

No, he likely doesn't have better things to do. He's too messed in the head to hold a job or a relationship; and he's so singularly focused on stopping priest diddling that he can't focus on anything else. And, yes, he was diddled by a priest.I agree that it's a waste of time to protest all day, every day; but if you do it in just short doses, I found it to be oddly amusing.

Are you thinking of Franciscans? I think they're more into poverty than Jesuits are (though Jesuits do take a vow of poverty).Jesuits are known, more than anything else, for being intellectuals; and in my experience they tend to be more progressive on social issues than other orders of Catholic priests.

He'd have a lynch mob after him so fast... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/22/world/europe/vatican-cardinal-bernard-law-who-resigned-amid-sex-scandal-retires.html?_r=0
I served mass as an altar boy with Cardinal Law. No diddling.
Maybe you're just ugly.
I do somehow feel slighted like I wasn't hot enough. I think it was the bowl cut.

I pass the below guy every evening on my ride home from work. I always give him a honk as a sign of support, and because I feel bad for him because he's out there every day and I know his story from chatting with him. I'll stop and chat with him today to see what his take on the new Pope is.

:hifive: I did a 12 year stretch in parochial schooling + altar boy without being touched. Luckily never with Bernie the pimp

i ask because i have no real knowledge of him. why is he a hard liner? seems like they are spinning he is a breath of fresh air on CNN right now.

i love the pick simply because my kids name is John Francis. :)
all jesuits are hard-liners.they take a vow of poverty and stuff.

it's the hard core sect of priests.
Are you thinking of Franciscans? I think they're more into poverty than Jesuits are (though Jesuits do take a vow of poverty).Jesuits are known, more than anything else, for being intellectuals; and in my experience they tend to be more progressive on social issues than other orders of Catholic priests.
:goodposting: Many of the Catholic universities are run by Jesuits.

some people won't be happy until there is a new antipope
Who's the current antipope? When/why does he get replaced? Is it even a he? I suppose it shouldn't be to solidify the 'anti' part of the title. And when this new antipope gets anointed, do they do it via a Proclave?
Antipope. Show some respect and use your capital letters.
