Pot smokers (1 Viewer)

Need a little help since the first dispensaries are now open (OH).

Wife had a very rough delivery with our first and has permanent nerve damage. She needs to be drunk or on something if we are to 'enjoy' the evening. Tried a few CBD items that she didn't like/work. She's recently tried some Delta 9 gummies which while effective in one regard (and WAY better than booze), they make her feel ill and very sleepy.

Did some preliminary research and it appear there are some out there that have an energy effect instead of sleeping effect so hope is not lost. What I don't know is any of the conversion factors. Say a 10 mg delta 9 gummy, is that equal to 10 mg CBD, or a 10mg THC? If no, what's a rough rule of thumb? What about time to take affect and length of affect?

TIA
I'd start with 5mg of a THC gummy from a regulated dispensary. The delta crap is not tested or regulated so who knows what else is in it or if the hemp had pesticides.

CBD isn't going to do anything to you from a getting high standpoint.

Thanks. I'm seeing a number of... hybrids I guess you would call them where it's THC with CBD in various percentages. Guessing the CBD is more to mellow /relax. Do the energy ones really provide a lift or at minimum not cause drowziness?

People look for a higher CBD percentage for medicinal/wellness benefits, with lower THC so they don't get too high. That's all.

Edibles knock some people out. In my experience, it is more of a body high, and easy to get couch lock. Have you tried flower, or concentrates, or vape? With those, you can regulate more than taking an edible and waiting. More control, IMO.

Dabbing at low temps is my preference with the ladies. But that's the deep end of the pool, you may not want to be messing around with that stuff.

If hybrid is mentioned, it's the combo of sativa and indica not THC/CBD.

I’d recommend 5mg of Sativa to start, then go up or down in dosage if needed.

Indica is more of the “couch melt” feeling so probably not what you’re looking for

CBD also not what you want here

Time to kick in hard to say, there are some labeled as fast acting that might take 5 min, others can be like an hour

Not sure what they’ll have, but if you can find the 2.5 mg mints or 1 mg m and m or sweet tarts that’s a good way to start slow and ramp up

Don't listen to this guy on his dosage recommendations. Start off with 100-200mg to see how that feels. 5mg is like drinking an Odouls

A good rule of thumb imo is to cut a 10 in half. Can always add more. If she gets ripped the first time she won’t want to try again

ETA: my wife likes a piece of a troche once in awhile. They seem to work faster for her too

I am joking especially for first timer. 50mg is a good starting point imo. For me, 200mg barely moves the needle but I've been a THC advocate for a few decades now so probably have some tolerance built in.

I could not disagree more that 50mg is a good starting point. No fn way. The stuff from the dispensaries is no joke

Yes…that is crazy talk. I would start with 5mg at the max for first time. Edibles work completely different for me. I’m feeling weird with only a few mg. But I smoke like crazy. Has to do with enzymes or something. I worked with a guy who could just not get high from edibles no matter how many mgs he took. We are all different.

It just depends what you're looking to do. If you're microdosing or whatever then maybe 10mg is fine but if you want to get high, you have to up the dose. I compare it to mushrooms or peyote when I'd take a few caps or buttons, I just thought it was ok and didn't feel much. When I got into the 2-3g range, I was like ok this is fun. Again this is from my perspective. I can't speak for those of you who get drunk off a Zima

@odin33 Listen to this guy, not to improve sexy time with the wife, but you want to sneak away with your buddies to watch, like, every Harry Potter movie back to back.

Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated.

Stopped in at one last night on the way home. Man, what a process, and interesting clientele. I'm sure things will get easier as the newness wares off.

Worker there was knowledgeable and helped steer me to the Sativa products. Stuck to the sissy end of the pool and picked up low quantities of 4 types. One 5mg, and the rest 10mg. Fingers crossed this works.

If you're looking for something that won't put you in the couch, hybrids are also great. I prefer the sativa dominate hybrids because they have a nice balance. Too much sativa can create major anxiety for some users. Blue Dream has always been one of my favorites but there are so many strains out there. Hope everything works out!

If she’s not tolerating a D-9 gummy I would recommend you consider a vape pen. This assumes she doesn’t want to smoke flower, which would be the best option. Edibles are unreliable in my experience. Experimenting with different products and dosages could waste many days, because you’re never sure what’s going to happen until you’re an hour or two into it and that’s often too late to change course if it’s not what you want - she’s either crashed out or not feeling anything. Even if you find something that works, it doesn’t necessarily work the same every time so it can be a constant adventure. Vapes come in different blends of sativa/indica, dosage is easy to control and the effect is immediate.

Since we're on the topic, it's become more more and more widely proven that there really isn't a distinction (scientifically) between the effects of sativa vs. indica. The only real difference is the plant size. Indicas are smaller and more dense. Sativas are bigger and taller plants. While I buy into a bit of a difference between the two I think a bigger chemical compound to be aware of are the terpenes. I'd check labels and and strain info after you buy and partake and learn which terpenes are more present in each particular strain. Here's more details about the indica vs. sativa argument...

CCR: Now, moving onto something more controversial. Here is a statement one can find on the Web: “It is widely accepted that marijuana has two different species: Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa.” This was of course also the opinion of the great 18th century naturalist, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, but would academic botanists today agree with this statement?

Dr. Russo:
Botanical taxonomists never agree on anything for very long! To paraphrase and expropriate an old Yiddish expression: 12 botanical taxonomists, 25 different opinions. Many classical botanists would argue for Cannabis as one polymorphic species based on the ability of all its types to interbreed. However, if this were true, hundreds of neotropical gesneriads (Gesneriaceae, members of the African violet family) would all be one species since they readily hybridize and produce fertile offspring. It is clear that there are many chemotypes of Cannabis: THC predominant, CBD predominant, and mixed types. This is a good basic classification, but it has also been possible to selectively breed for other chemotypes expressing high titers of THCV, cannabidivarin, cannabichromene, and even ones producing 100% of its cannabinoids as cannabigerol, or others with no cannabinoids at all. The debate continues. Some espouse Cannabis as a single species, while others describe up to four: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, Cannabis ruderalis, and Cannabis afghanica (or kafiristanica).6,7

CCR: Some users describe the psychoactive effects of Cannabis indica and sativa as being distinctive, even opposite. But are they really? Beyond self-reports from users, is there any hard evidence for pharmacologically different species of Cannabis?

Dr. Russo:
There are biochemically distinct strains of Cannabis, but the sativa/indica distinction as commonly applied in the lay literature is total nonsense and an exercise in futility. One cannot in any way currently guess the biochemical content of a given Cannabis plant based on its height, branching, or leaf morphology. The degree of interbreeding/hybridization is such that only a biochemical assay tells a potential consumer or scientist what is really in the plant. It is essential that future commerce allows complete and accurate cannabinoid and terpenoid profiles to be available.

CCR: Sativa is often described as being uplifting and energetic, whereas indica as being relaxing and calming. Can you speculate on what could be the basis for these perceived differences?

Dr. Russo:
We would all prefer simple nostrums to explain complex systems, but this is futile and even potentially dangerous in the context of a psychoactive drug such as Cannabis. Once again, it is necessary to quantify the biochemical components of a given Cannabis strain and correlate these with the observed effects in real patients. Beyond the increasing number of CBD predominant strains in recent years, almost all Cannabis on the market has been from high-THC strains. The differences in observed effects in Cannabis are then due to their terpenoid content, which is rarely assayed, let alone reported to potential consumers. The sedation of the so-called indica strains is falsely attributed to CBD content when, in fact, CBD is stimulating in low and moderate doses! Rather, sedation in most common Cannabis strains is attributable to their myrcene content, a monoterpene with a strongly sedative couch-lock effect that resembles a narcotic. In contrast, a high limonene content (common to citrus peels) will be uplifting on mood, while the presence of the relatively rare terpene in Cannabis, alpha-pinene, can effectively reduce or eliminate the short-term memory impairment classically induced by THC.2,8

CCR: How do you think one could address the sativa/indica dichotomy in a scientifically sound manner?

Dr. Russo:
Since the taxonomists cannot agree, I would strongly encourage the scientific community, the press, and the public to abandon the sativa/indica nomenclature and rather insist that accurate biochemical assays on cannabinoid and terpenoid profiles be available for Cannabis in both the medical and recreational markets. Scientific accuracy and the public health demand no less than this.

The benefit of the gummy, at least the D9 she's tried, was she could take it (discretely), still interact with family for a bit, and then be good for awhile.

Long time cigarette smoker here who kicked the habit long before vapes came onto the market so they are again a complete unknown for me. The immediate effect and the control is very appealing. The potential for multiple needs of use, and the physical device not so much. My girls are still teenagers so this all needs to be under the radar. I'd address it with the oldest soon in the process should we go that route. The options seem flat out daunting. I'd assume a traditional vape store for the pen? Recommendations knowing this a limited use thing and we'd likely need to try a variety of cartridges.

Not opposed to flower, but that IMO would quickly become a known thing to the kids (smell, supplies, etc).

I have the same issues with kids at home and a need to be discreet. I also thought edibles would be a godsend in this respect but for me it just doesn't work. The most reliable product I found was GM's famous peanut butter cookies, which I've been planning to try to replicate but haven't gotten to. I use D-9 gummies purely for sleep, a very small dose maybe 1-2 nights a week at most. I sneak around with my one hitter when convenient but otherwise the vape pen is much more usable because there is no noticeable odor after a few minutes at most. I can sit on my front porch or even inside at night with zero risk. I found the disposable vapes to be underwhelming when I first tried them a couple years ago, but they've gotten better or maybe I've just found the right brands because the last couple I've used have been fantastic. I recommend getting them from a dispensary - not a vape store. If it works for you, its cheaper to get a re-usable pen and just buy the cartridges of juice, but I'm a pretty light user so just get the disposables for now. The newer ones are USB chargeable and very effective for me.

I would not worry too much on the repeated use thing. You'll see what I mean when she tries it. One or two pulls and she will feel it for a bit, especially being a lightweight.

The physical device is just a battery, some have temp controls. The thing I would stress is that you want to keep your carts upright as often as possible, to prevent clogging. Most batteries are longer, and the easiest thing to do is lay them on their sides. My advice would be to get one that is meant to stand up easily, and has temp controls. I have this one, bought for $15 in a smoke shop. Love it. And I have had a lot of batteries. My accessory snob buddy has this one.

See these here? Don't buy these.

Don't get freaked out by the options. Variations on the same thing.

Think he mentioned he's in a state with a young market. I would bet they don't have many options for disposables at the moment, that's an item that brands tend to roll out later.

Are the cartridges all standard? My concern was that if I bought a particular brand I'd be stuck with those carts or at least be limited.
Yes. Referred to as 510 thread. There was some other thread number, I forget, but 510 won the Thread Wars, so who cares

Any popular batteries the default will be 510 thread, and the carts that you see on dispo sites are all 510 thread. All the ones I linked above are 510 thread.

Some brands trying to do a pod thing, and you need their hardware, but eff those guys.

Most carts will fit universally in various vape devices. When I was doing the vape thing circa 2018 I preferred the disposable vape pens for their ease of use and discrete nature. I also didn't want to shell out a couple of hundred dollars for a bulky device I may not use much in the future and probably lose at some point. Loved these before I decided to just move to flower: https://www.ocweekly.com/toke-of-the-week-vvs-disposables/

Sativa edibles will either be great and bring some energy or they will be a horrible experience, i don't think there will be much of an in between. They definitely can kick in severe anxiety with some people (including me), I won't touch them.

Always have preferred the flower

The pax is nice for sneaking places but yes they suck because you need their battery and their carts. But we've got some great manufacturers doing liquid live resin in them and they taste amazing.

The first time I bought vape carts I also ordered a pen, when I went to pick up my order the girl there told me the carts wouldn’t fit the pen I ordered so she gave me a different one 🤷🏻‍♂️

We are doing an all-in-one with live resin for the first SKU, and having hardware that is meant for the resin helps.

Some carts that work with disty don't work with live resin.

Long time cigarette smoker here who kicked the habit long before vapes came onto the market so they are again a complete unknown for me. The immediate effect and the control is very appealing.

I want to take this opportunity to warn my fellow ex-smokers. Using vapes or smoking flower will give you a little of that spark again that makes you think you like smoking, and you will be tempted to have a cigarette.

The pax is nice for sneaking places but yes they suck because you need their battery and their carts. But we've got some great manufacturers doing liquid live resin in them and they taste amazing.

live resin gummies from Lost Farms are Good Tides are solid.

Looking for some advice. I’ve scanned through some of the thread, but since I know little to nothing about this subject I’m not picking up much useful. I have never used edibles and haven’t smoked in probably close to 20 years.

Looking for product recommendations and sources for (or a site with a good primer on the subject)

A: sleeping aid - I have always been a restless light sleeper and could really use something that will help give me good nights sleep.

B: recreational use - something for sitting around the campfire when out camping.

I’m in Minnesota, so either local or internet sites are cool. Thanks

I won't advise on the recreational use part since so much depends on "how do you want to feel?" part of it.

Regarding a sleeping aid, I use edibles that contain THC and CBN. After surgery 2 years ago I've been able to sleep only 3-5 hours at night. And I hate sedatives. THC/CBN combinations don't sedate me, they just relax the hell out of me and I can sleep 6-7 hours at night. Huge difference.

For A and B - if you're taking edibles, just make sure they're at least 200mg. You'll be fine.
