Priest Holmes may be cleared to practice (1 Viewer)

Holmes planning on joining Chiefs for camp

(July 25, 2007) -- Unpredictable stories go to training camp along with players. But none can be any more unlikely than this: While Michael Vick will not be at training camp, it now looks as if Priest Holmes will.

Chiefs players are now telling each other that, after nearly two full years away from football to nurse a spinal injury, the 33-year-old Holmes has been given medical clearance to play and he is planning to participate in this summer's training camp.

Running backs Michael Bennett and Larry Johnson, to name two players, are aware of Holmes' plans. Holmes' agent, Todd France, declined comment.

There also are other strong signs pointing to a Holmes comeback. With camp kicking off Friday, Holmes still has yet to inform anyone in the Chiefs organization that he plans to retire. The feeling within the organization now is that he will attempt to resume his career.

If he does, he would be on the field Friday, while the embattled Vick is not.

"Priest is counting on our roster right now as an active player," one Chiefs official said recently.

Nor does it seem as if it will change anytime soon. Holmes' return, if it indeed happens as now is expected, makes sense on a number of levels.
This is a negotiating ploy. It lets Priest negotiate with the Chiefs to sever ties with him while giving him some money (which he wouldn't get if he retired, if I remember correctly). And it lets the Chiefs negotiate with Larry Johnson by pretending there is competition for his starting spot. That's just my opinion --- it's a bunch of negotiating bullcrap. Nobody has said a word about the pinched or weak spot on Holmes's spinal column suddenly being healed, and about him no longer being one hard hit away from paralysis.
This was my first thought too. Too bad my WW is closed for the offseason. At the end of last season, guys were grabbing Ricky Williams, Chris Brown, Domanick Williams (nee Davis) and rolling the dice. Priest actually crossed my mind but I thought "no way". Certainly would make for some good trade discussions now if I had rostered him. I think I'll pick up Barry Sanders at the end of this season...

NFL.com is reporting that Holmes has received medical clearance to play and is planning to report to training camp.

Chiefs Issue Statement Regarding RB Holmes

KCChiefs.com - [Full Article]

Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes informed GM Carl Peterson on Wednesday that he intends to report to training camp at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls on Saturday. Holmes has passed a physical and has been cleared to begin activities with the club. Holmes is under contract with the Chiefs through the 2009 campaign. Peterson received a call from Holmes' agent and indicated that Priest had made a decision that he wants to play. The Chiefs coordinated visits with the team's orthopedic physicians and specialists in Miami. Everyone conferred following the examination and it was the opinion of the doctors that Priest could play NFL football in 2007.

does Priest make the team? any chance he moves into Bennetts spot?
WAY to early to tell.......ask in 4 weeks
I don't think he makes the team. Just my guess.
Rhonda Moss, who originally broke this story last night, says her contacts in the Chief organization are all saying Priest will be the 3rd down back. Who knows, though, if LJ holds out?
I trust 610 Sports and Ms. Moss as much as I trust a used car salesman.

Any chance HBO is kicking a little side money to Priest in order to generate an intriguing story on the upcoming 'Hard Knocks'? ;)

I picked him up on the waiver wire this morning anyway - just in case.

No. And it's not a ploy to get LJ into camp either. I don't know what Priest can do but he's got more pride than to be used like that. He's also an intensely private person who would not go thru this if he did not feel like he had a chance to contribute. Nor would he risk injury to his neck if he was not serious. He's in camp to play football, just don't know what he has left. Even if he's suffered little to no drop off in his skill level he won't be running behind a great line anymore, something which impacts him more than LJ since Priest was one of the better runners in finding the open hole.

This has been Priests intent since the injury kept him out all of last season ... from RTSports player notes

Dec 17 2006 09:19AM

Randy Covitz, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Priest Holmes (head, neck) said Saturday, Dec. 16, his extended layoff from football this season has allowed him to get back into great shape and have an opportunity of returning to the National Football League in 2007. "Having this extended time off is giving me an opportunity for any swelling or fluid levels to become very stable, so I think I'm in great shape," Holmes said while attending the memorial for team owner Lamar Hunt. "What was needed was some time off. Having an entire 12 months without contact has put me in position to be able to make a decision in '07 whether I should return." Holmes, however, will continue to take his time before making a final decision on his playing future.

Stranger things have happened

i wish him the best, i just hope that in 6 months we're all not saying to ourselves "What was he thinking??" :bag:

Didn't the Chiefs use Larry Johnson as leverage when Priest was coming off an injury and talking about holding out? It's come full circle now where they're going to use Priest as leverage against Larry.

What a punk move by the Chiefs to get LJ into camp. And shame on Priest Holmes for going along with it.
Priest is under contract to play for the Kansas City Chiefs. If medically cleared, he would be playing regardless of who else was here. When you agree on a contract and you have the means to fulfill that contract, anything outside of doing just THAt would be wrong. What do you want CLark Hunt and Carl Peterson to tell him? "Don't come back so we don't anger Larry?"

(Rotoworld) Kansas City Star writer Jason Whitlock believes the return of Priest Holmes is simply a negotiating ploy on the part of GM Carl Peterson.Impact: Whitlock says Priest's return will force Larry Johnson's hand in contract negotiations and points to the fact that Holmes' personal trainer says he hasn't been working out. Priest is due to report to Chiefs camp on Saturday.

What I want them to do is NOT call Priest and say "hey, can you help us out here? Johnson has us by the shorties"It just seems awfully coincidental that LJ threatens a holdout and suddenly out of the blue Priest Holmes is cured and ready to party like it's 1999.

This tells me all that I need to know.

If you would read the written word in the KC Star article and the Chiefs press release, it says explicitly that Priest CALLED THEM!

suuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrre he did.If I were the Chiefs brass / Priest H., that's the story I'd stick to as well.

I wish him the best as well. I just hope he doesn't go so far as to endure training camp and exhibition game contact, and end up paralyzed. If I'm remembering correctly, he had a condition with his spinal column that made it vulnerable to getting pinched at any time. And he already lost all the feeling in his limbs or body once, for a short period of time after a play, wasn't he?

There is supposed to be some sort of announcement this afternoon by the KC brass, but I think since it is being done by Hunt, Peterson, etc that this is just a motivational threat to LJ. Priest is done.....they are simply using him here - and since he is holding them hostage still I see no problem doing this.

Kolby Smith is a MUCH bigger threat for LJ than Priest is.
Kevin, what do you hear about KC RB Derrick Ross who was the 2007 NFL Europe Co-MVP for the Cologne Centurions?http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2007/06/21/rb..._of_nfl_europa/

RB Derrick Ross Named CO-MVP of NFL Europa

Jun 21, 2007, 9:32:35 AM

Quarterback J.T. O’SULLIVAN (Chicago Bears) of the Frankfurt Galaxy and running back DERRICK ROSS (Kansas City Chiefs) of the Cologne Centurions were named the Offensive Co-Most Valuable Players while Centurions defensive end JASON HALL (Carolina Panthers) was named the Defensive MVP, the NFL Europa League announced today. Hamburg Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO was named Coach of the Year.

O’Sullivan led the Galaxy to a 7-3 record and a berth in the Yello Strom World Bowl XV this Saturday, where Frankfurt will defend its title against Hamburg. The Bears’ quarterback led the NFLEL in passer rating (104.8) and passing yards (2,201) while tying for the league lead with 16 touchdown passes. The former Cal-Davis standout recorded the only two 300-yard games in NFL Europa this season, including a league-best 374-yard performance in Week 9 against the Sea Devils.

Ross was the NFLEL’s leading rusher with 802 yards and four 100-yard games this season for Cologne. The Kansas City Chiefs’ running back totaled a league-best 933 yards from scrimmage (802 rushing, 131 receiving) and scored five touchdowns as the Centurions posted a 6-4 record.

Hall, Ross’ teammate with Cologne, set a franchise record with 12 sacks as the Centurions boasted the No. 1 ranked defense in NFL Europa (256.1 yards per game). The Carolina Panthers’ defensive end also tied a league record by recording a sack in seven consecutive games.

The league also announced its all-NFL Europa League team. A total of 12 NFL teams were represented as the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets each placed an NFL-best two players on the squad. Among the six NFL Europa teams, Cologne (8) and Hamburg (8) tied for the lead with Frankfurt (7) right behind them.

Included among the 15 All-NFL Europa League team selections who will play in World Bowl XV are Hamburg wide receiver MARCUS MAXWELL (San Francisco 49ers), guard PETE MC MAHON (Jacksonville Jaguars), tackle JEREMY PARQUET (St. Louis Rams), Frankfurt quarterback O’Sullivan (Chicago Bears), guard MATT MC CHESNEY (New York Jets) and cornerback SHIRDONYA MITCHELL (Miami Dolphins).

Maxwell led NFL Europa with seven touchdown receptions and finished with 32 catches for 499 yards (15.6-yard average). Hamburg teammates McMahon and Parquet each started all 10 games and solidified the offensive line for the No. 2 ranked scoring team in the league (23.1 points per game).

Offensive co-MVP O’Sullivan was protected by a strong line led by McChesney, who helped the Galaxy average an NFLEL-best 355.5 yards per game and 25.4 points per contest. Mitchell, who recorded 31 tackles and nine passes defensed, tied for second in the league with two interceptions, including an 81-yard interception-return touchdown.

Yello Strom World Bowl XV between the Sea Devils and Galaxy will be played this Saturday, June 23. The NFL Network will broadcast the game live in the United Stats at 1:00 PM ET with BOB PAPA and BRIAN BALDINGER calling the action.

I see that he's listed at 5-10 226 and played special teams last year so I would assume he can do ST at minimum but he also might have something that could help Michael Bennett/Kolby Smith/Preist Holmes at the RB position if LJ is a holdout.

1. Being sent to NFLE is bad enough. If a team really likes you these days they keep you around for the offseason.

2. KC will keep 3 rbs. LJ, Bennett, Priest, Kolby Smith ... where is there room for Ross?

I dont put a lot of stock into Ross' chances of making the team ...

I hate to be clueless but I have to ask. I just made a bet with my brother that Priest will get at least one handoff in the regular season. I bet $50 bucks. Am I a winner or a loser?? I have no idea as to the seriousness of this whole thing.......

Wouldn't a call to someone like Corey Dillon be a more effective move for the Chiefs brass, if this is their strategy?

Corey might actually want some real money to be part of the dog and pony show.

I am an LJ owner but if Priest is 100% healthy then this gives KC some leverage with LJ I think. I just don't want to see Priest end his career on a stretcher. I would be amazed if he was able to come back and play at his previous level, wouldn't everyone else?

Edited to note I have been reconsidering LJ as my franchise due to the holdout scenerio. I can keep 1 and I also have Addai, Maroney and MJD(drafted all of them in case LJ presented a problem). So I have been going back and forth with Addai/Maroney in mocks just to see what would happen. So much for an easy pre-draft right?

I hear ya... I'm in a 1 keeper (12 team) league as well ...had Priest, now LJ... but also have Maroney, Bush and Wesbrook (1pt. PPR). I just have a hard time imagining Priest as being able to come back in force enough to first effect LJ's decision and second to carry much of a load this year. I suppose however, if I am wrong, that is another concern about keeping LJ, if Priest does miraculously get fit quick, spells LJ a good bit and steels some easy TD's. Holmes knows how to sniff out the goaline.
