PUNK Music Draft - Now Ongoing post awesome punk songs thread (1 Viewer)

I just listened to what might be the most underrated band and album of all time.

Not sure anyone but jaysus and ahrn would know them. Will draft in the next round

 
Wanted to get a couple local acts in here.  These two bands were Twin Cities live institutions in the late 90s.  Saw them play together a number of times, including Thanksgiving weekend, 21 years ago, at the Turf Club.  We had a drunken snowball fight in the streets after the show, and I met a couple of guys at that show that I'm still close to to this day.

Couldn't find a decent version of this first one, this was the best I could do on youtube. Studio version sounds way better, but they were really excellent live.

Dillinger Four- Doublewhiskeycokenoice

The Hold Steady is one of my favorite bands of this century.  But before Craig Finn became their singer, he was a St. Paul hoodrat that played in this band.  I miss them immensely.

I was definitely drafting a Dillinger song. One of my favorite acts ever. 

Craig Finn also spent custody time in Springfield, MA, which is why his songs can have that Western Mass. vibe to them.

I don't want to cross our commissioner, but I've been way less of a Hold Steady fan than most, so you're not alone. I do find The Boys and Girls of America as a great album, though, so I'm not sure they're totally unlistenable to me.

I knew Cintra in her years between spending time in Juvee and writing a play about her.  If her Wikipedia birthday is accurate, she was still a teenager while dating my roommate.  Her youth is much more remarkable to me now than it seemed at the time.  Back then, you hardly even thought about it because of Cintra's enormous self-confidence.  She was usually able to charm the bouncer which I guess is easier to pull off when you're hot sht. 

We lost touch after I moved out of the 7 rooms of doom.  We went to her plays and occasionally crossed paths before she moved to LA and her slice of fame and fortune.  I'm glad I was able to see the comet flash across the sky.

I wanna say she was 15 or 16 when she ran off to the city. I lost touch with her during those pre Juvee years.

But in those smaller world years, i went to w germany with the state team...I was 17ish (summer between Jr and Sr years...same trip where I got to play against Cameroon wc team). Cintra and I sat next to each other on the flight to Germany. It had been a couple years since I had seen or spoken to her...and she wasn't exactly forthcoming about most of what had been happening or the parent induced year o pennance she was on her way to do in Poland. I also was a young, naive, smallishminded suburban kid- so probably also didn't/couldn't hear what she was saying about those times even if she did. Sounds like you knew her in those years that are still somewhat clouded in mystery for me.

Saw her again with Juvee and the rest of her plays in that stretch when she was SFs enfent terrible. We've stayed closish since then through her moves to LA, here to NY and now back to SF/Marin. Her genius deserves much better rewards for her

I think I am up soon, so let me throw one out there. if Trogg wants it he can have it. I can post the youtube link later. Good song, helped by Basketball Diaries movie. But by itself, early punk song that still has lasting power these days. Have listened to other songs by the artist though, and I can see why this song was the only one to kind of make it. Another punk song that hit mainstream a bit, and thus helped the genre move forward:

I think I may have seen them at some point, as a couple songs seemed vaguely familiar, but wherever/whenever it was I was at the show either randomly or to see someone else.

I still intend to.. weekend got a little blowed up.. I am behind on Summerpalooza too, I had an empty spot on my roster and didn't even fill it because I already owe like 4 songs

Gonna have to pull together a ten spot if I want back in

 
I think for tomorrow I may move us to one pick in the AM and one in the PM, we didn't really stick to the order much today.

9.04 - Man or Astro-Man - Eric Estrotica (1993)

I love everything about this band's sound and overall vibe.  The eerie samples and spaced-out surf sound always make me happy, though they do sort of run together.  They are the perfect band to just sort of drop out and get weird with in your own head and connect to the ethereal cosmos.

My first week at college, they came through to play a show on campus and I feel like I knew who they were, but didn't know much about them.  I loved the trippy sound.

Young Larry: College is going to be awesome!

Narrator: It wasn't.

Nonetheless, I love that this band exists and Eric Estrotica is one of their more distinct songs in my mind.

Funny because comparing this song to the rest of the draft it definitely does not hold up well. But being it came in 1980 and came out of nowhere on it's own it has a significant place in establishing Punk as it's own genre

Jawbox has another cover that I thought about taking for my covers category.

I'm a complete honk for J Robbins in nearly all the bands he's been in / production work he's done.

Punk was more of a style than a musical form in its early days.  A lot of acts like Elvis Costello got lumped in at the time but aren't considered punk today. 

I think 80s American Hardcore drew thick black lines around punk and in some way ossified the genre.  Many artists from the 90s til today would be considered punk if the boundaries weren't so tightly defined now.

They did a bunch of covers.  I think I listened to all of 'em this afternoon (at least the first minute or so).

After I was only in Atlanta for a few months was riding around with my then-new--girlfriend (22 years ago, now wife) and we happened by the Masquerede at around 945pm to see the marqueee for TONIGHT!  MAN OR ASTROMAN.   I'd been a casual fan prior to this but we went in and it was great.    I agree that all their stuff tends to blend together but they're a lot of fun. 

And, lol at Young Larry vs narrator.

Totally agree. A band I spotlighted before would have been serious punk way back when. I still might take them, as punk is what punk does, but your point is taken.

yeah i think the later rounds will have some interesting takes on if a band/song is "punk" or not. I have a few i was thinking of that are not defined as Punk, but may fit the mold in later rounds. there are a few bands i am thinking of i am surprised haven't been picked yet, but it might be because they are not defined as punk. One of them is itching to throw a pick out at some point

i also think that is why this draft is fun. Punk is so anti-commercialism that is all over the place a bit

another reason i am liking this draft is because i don't know some of the songs/bands. Good call here Ahrn. This thread (and the stories) has helped push me into a bit of a Punk run music wise.

Pulled up to pick up my daughter from day care today blasting this song out of my jeep. I think i looked like the cool dad picking up his kid, and i am going to stick to that damn it. Feel bad for some of the kids at the day care because their parents seem so dull and crappy they are impeding their kids from experiencing the finer things. There will be no pop music played in any vehicle i am driving!!

 
I listened to the mix while doing my Thanksgiving grocery shopping today.  It made me want to smash into other shopping carts.  The songs flash past at a frenetic pace.  I need to find some punk slow jams to pick in the second half.
