PUNK Music Draft - Now Ongoing post awesome punk songs thread (4 Viewers)

so with pick 10.6 i have had a few songs laying around, and am surprised this one wasn't picked yet. i see @Ron Swanson took these guys in the 5th round, but this song has been an iconic song for the past couple of decades and surprised to not see it get mentioned. Maybe because it is more on the pop-punk or skate-punk side than the harder stuff, but a chippy song that always gets the blood moving in a non pissed off way. will have to course correct with some harder stuff in the next round or 2 if it fits, but for now just a good all around song.

Descendents  -  Suburban Home  -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aArkf4fnPko

As before, if anybody was thinking of this song feel free to take it and i will throw in another. I feel like i could go 50 rounds with this draft. One thing i would love to do when time allows is look at each round and pick the best/worst selection. or maybe each person's draft and best/worst pick. Maybe got too much time on my hands  :shrug:

Sayerville NJ, the home of Bon Jovi and the home to The Starland Ballroom. Saw this band here in February 2005 with the Street Dogs. Not as good of a show as when I saw them at Irving Plaza when I met Evan Seinfeld and Tera Patrick (great googly moogly) but I have something else for my Irving show

9.3, Social Distortion, Ring of Fire (cover)

i'm amazed this one and Time Bomb lasted so long in this draft. Fantastic version of the song, and i know many will disagree, but better than the original i think

9.04 - Man or Astro-Man - Eric Estrotica (1993)

Young Larry: College is going to be awesome!

Narrator: It wasn't.
:lmao:

Coincidentally, Mr. krista* and I were just talking about this band earlier tonight, unrelated to this draft.  He had come across a crazy-great Thanksgiving-themed playlist that included their "You Can't Get Good Riblets in Space."  Love this pick.

*RIP, currently on timeout for making the rookie mistake of wading into the PSF.

Not to make light of that too much, but  :lmao:

Tell Mr. Krista we need him on that wall. Stay golden, Pony Boy.

Yeah that was the first cover I thought of. My thought with Rancid is there were so many songs I want to draft that I figure I can wait and probably still get a song I really like.

I believe the Out Comes the Wolves album is the greatest album ever. there is not one skip on the thing. Start to finish it brings it

I know Sebowski disagrees and thinks Lars ruined the band

A top punk album for sure. I can only think of 2 or 3 others I would say rival it.

Ah, yes.  The "Lars is Yoko Ono theory". I don't subscribe, but I understand the theory.

It appears for my 8th round pick I updated the Google Doc, but didn't actually post my pick  :doh:

The Adicts - Songs of Praise

Saw these guys down in Long Beach in 2003 or 2004 with Channel 3 and Agent Orange.  Made me feel like I didn't completely miss out on an era of some of the best punk music.

is he D Baseball?

this draft is anarchy.

modogg's like 2 rounds ahead all the time, jzilla is mia, huthut is apparently jumping in.

this brazen convention-flouting isn't what punk is about!

shoot, yeah my bad, i didn't tag who was up. here are the next few people coming up. I like the idea of making 2 picks a day going forward, so i will throw mine out there for tomorrow A.M. since it technically is East Coast time 😀

@El Floppo

@Jaysus

@Mike Damone

@Dickies

@Herb

and then you guys can flip and go for it.
not your fault, it was generally confusing since people were at different spots after the weekend.

My AM pick today:

09.14 The Menzingers - Good Things

ETA: The Menzingers were the last live show I went too... and since Dag Nasty was picked over the weekend, I thought I would share that because Don't Sleep opened for The Menzingers.  Don't Sleep is Dave Smalley's new band.  Dave Smalley is a legend. Good times.

Permaskip me.

I'll try to catch up, but the music is not sitting well with my mindset right now. Will be knee deep in The Carpenters for the next few days like a xanax dive

lol I had to stop for the past weekend. I love punk but I can't do aggressive music 24/7 either.

I think I am up soon, so let me throw one out there. if Trogg wants it he can have it. I can post the youtube link later. Good song, helped by Basketball Diaries movie. But by itself, early punk song that still has lasting power these days. Have listened to other songs by the artist though, and I can see why this song was the only one to kind of make it. Another punk song that hit mainstream a bit, and thus helped the genre move forward:

The Jim Carroll Band - People Who Died.
Covered this tune back in the day.  Fun song.

I have no idea why these guys were not bigger than they were. I know they toured constantly but will say that most of their shows were in NJ and maybe that is a reason. I have seen them a ton and really loved them. Forgot about them and this album until I started thinking of all the shows I went to and who I have seen. I was not going to use the same venue twice for my picks but I will cheat a little bit here with my next two picks (Just going to pick two now since its one hour away from the pm)

The 70s and 80s punkers in NYC had CBGBs, the NYHC and punk rockers of the 90s had Coney Island High on St Marks place. What an awesome venue to see a show. It is where most of my weekends were spent between 1995 and 1997 (until I went to college). I cant even list off all of the great shows I have seen here. Upstairs from the main venue is where they had the bar and DJs would spin punk albums. I remember Marky Ramone and Wayne/Jayne County always playing there. Anyway, it was this upstairs section that I saw this band.

10.X: Ensign, Page 32, Coney island High, upstairs

https://youtu.be/lt3gG3tFWjU

These guys are straight edge from Boston. For some reason the hardcore kids from NY and Boston were supposed to not like each other. Not sure why. These guys were awesome

11.X: In my Eyes, The way it was left, Coney Island High, downstairs

https://youtu.be/MbRXpPLq5D4

I saw Kepone and loved them. Got a 7" at the show. Henry was the track I loved.

Probably my favorite punk lyrics ever.

The Arrivals - Water Water Everywhere (2010)

For a moment I thought that the right thing to do
Would be to quick call you back, say, “I’m struck by loneliness too”
Though that sounds like an awful lie
When there’s scores of people around

So I ran to the drugstore
I bought a postcard instead
And I wrote these words beneath the letterhead

Love, we all do struggle with loneliness
Love, I am often very afraid
That the best times that we’ll have are somewhere in the past
And it’s all fool’s gold
To hope for a better life

Never heard of these guys.
It's funny how your (or at least, my) clique worked when it came to music back in the day.  I look around and everyone I know loves a certain band -- you just assume that's the norm.  Then you pickup and plant down in a new setting and a new town and all your norms have to be recalibrated.

Once I left my circle of friends in Pittsburgh, finding more than a handful of the KEPONE folks was a rarity.  I know people out there know of them / they had fans.  Just not in the saturation levels, I guess, they did locally for me.

In honor of Mr Krista.  I've spent about half the year on TO from posting in the PSF, including a week for quoting Trump.  This song was released in 1999, but is probably more relevant today than it was then.  Oh, and screw everyone and their 1-minute punk songs

9.xx - NOFX - The Decline

No idea how they spell that song

Looks like they were from Virginia.  I guess Cincinnati/Atlanta was to big a hike.

Never got into this band or understood the appeal.  They opened for NOFX on campus when I was in college and I was looking forward to seeing them live so that they could change my mind on them.  It was the worst live performance I've ever seen.  Even my friends who were all-in on them were like "WTF was that?"
I saw them 3 or 4 times. A couple shows were great but 1 was just awful. Lead singer/guitar player was so messed up that his guitar wasn't even plugged in and you could see someone just off stage actually playing his parts.

Yea, lead singer I have to assume was beyond plastered.  He stood in one place, not moving a single step the entire set and he was incoherent.  The instruments seemed out of tune and out of balance.  It was noise with an awkward stage presence.  They got booed.

I'm a huge Alkaline Trio fan, but I could see that, yeah. My friend just saw them in Boston and said they were great. Very hit or miss, I guess, but he and I are both part of the all-in contingent mentioned, so everything with a grain of salt.

Yep, he had serious drug issues. Love their albums and especially the lyrics. I don't think there were many punk bands with better lyrics.

Since I'm talking about the worst performance I've ever seen live, I'll pick one of the bands that has consistently been one of the best live bands I've ever seen.  I first saw them in Berkeley while I was in HS, and during my freshman year of college I learned they were playing in the backyard of a frat house.  Needless to say I was super excited.  Managed to come across someone selling beer wristbands to underage youth and had access to unlimited Natty Ice for $10.  Probably the most fun I've ever had at a concert.

10.xx - Face to Face - Disconnected

This frat had some pretty big name bands play in their backyard.  Before my times they had Sublime (one of the last shows they ever performed), Blink-182, AFI, No Use For A Name, and others.  While I was there they had Unwritten Law, Strung Out, and Face to Face twice.  Frat got shut down my junior year (I think) due to a hazing lawsuit, but damn I miss college.

PM pick:

This is one I discovered live.

10.04 (GB) Saves the Day - Shoulder the Wheel

I effing love Snapcase (like, a lot) and I really liked going to shows at the Troc.  So when I found myself back in town around Halloween for whatever reason, and found out Snapcase was at the Troc, it was on.  Best part was the stacked line up... Buried Alive and Philly favorite Kid Dynamite were on the bill and maybe Dillinger Escape Plan too.

Hardcore AF.

Saves the Day were on the bill as well, and umm, they did not fit in that lineup. I knew very little about them going in, and came out fairly indifferent on them... I kinda got that vibe about them from the majority of the people there... except for when they played this song.  Something about their performance was electric, and the place just went crazy.  The song was stuck in my head for years as a result.  A buddy of mine and I referred to it simply as "that song" for a while ("Remember that song from the Snapcase show?")

Snapcase will be my am pick tomorrow

I had Kid Dynamite on the list but they got scratched off by others
