I have no issue if someone exercises their First Amendment right not to stand during the National Anthem.

It's a doosh move....but they can do it if they like.

I am like Meh. That's my answer. Not someone who I would ever invite over my home. If that's what they need to do.....weak sauce. A while I get it has started a #### storm of people talking. We have been talking about these issues all our lives. 

Don't want to stand? Fine. Then be willing to deal with the social consequences of being looked at as a total doosh bag.

 
Going to a flag burning rally tonight; I've burned countless American flags this week in preparation.  It's my constitutional right to burn flags.

So your over-the-top attitude towards other people's patriotism predates your military service?

Standing for the National Anthem has less to do with patriotism than it does having respect for something bigger than any one person.  And having served in the military doesn't necessary make someone more patriotic, it's about service and duty.  Plenty of patriotic people have never served, it's a personal decision based on values and pride.  I don't even have red, white, and blue pants to wear during the 4th, that's not very patriotic. 

 
I will say the coach for the hockey team that says his players won't play if they don't stand is in the right, it's a national team and all the players should respect that, it's different than a privately owned team. Jozy Altidore I'm talking about you.

When you play for your country, I get that. When you're playing for the 49ers, it's just a little bit different

I have zero desire to get into this mess with you, but I do have one line of questioning that's been bugging me for a week now:

How do you feel about the people who yell out stuff during the anthem, like say the Orioles fans yelling "O" or the Caps fans yelling "Red" when that word comes around in the lyrics? That yelling seems far less respectful and far more distracting than quietly sitting or kneeling IMO.  Setting aside that you're usually rooting for those teams' opponents, obviously ;)

If you think that's different, what's the distinction?  Both are distractions intended to focus the thoughts of people in the vicinity on something other than the flag and the country it represents, no?  And if you think they're similar, why doesn't anyone seem to care about these disrespectful gestures?

Nah, it's fine.  Supporting your team with a O yell while supporting the flag seems ok.  It's kind of the same concept.

What about stuff like this?   I mean Lincoln was one of our greatest presidents.  He served in the Illinois militia and served as a member of the House.   He helped to preserve the Union, bring an end to slavery, and was murdered for his actions.

"Oh" and "Red" are part of the song aren't they?  I don't see how that is nearly the same thing as sitting in defiance, or more appropriately, getting nachos to avoid standing because you're a lazy piece of ####.

If you start from the premise that people should take two minutes to respect the flag and what it stands for, and avoid distracting others who wish to do the same (which I understood to be your issue with Kaepernick and friends), then I would think yelling to show your support for a sports team would be the worse sin by far.  After all it distracts everyone who hears it during those two minutes, not just the sitter/kneeler/nacho-eater and those who notice them. And some would say it is done to show solidarity with or support for a far less noble cause (not me though- go Caps!)

Perhaps I misunderstood your issue with Kaep and friends?

I think we just think differently about the issue at hand.  I don't equate yelling Red to not standing, I don't think that is actually very distracting.  It's childish maybe, I don't do it, but I also don't think it's disrespectful.  In fact I think it usually lends itself to people singing along, the whole song.  Who doesn't love a sing-along?

Love that line! 

I took my 3 year old to his first Rangers game this year - When they played the National Anthem we stood up, he was still taking in the scene. I took his hat off and mine as well and picked him up as he watched. He looks around like what is going on? I told him "you're an American, you couldn't be luckier, one day you'll appreciate it like Daddy!" 

Took him to another game a month later, he stands when the National Anthem is about to play, removes his hat, and says "Daddy, I'm an American!"

Anyone one of us could've been born in El Salvador, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Canada, etc - I'm proud of being a 4th generation and my son now a 5th generation American. I love this country and all of the opportunity it presents.

If someone can't stand their lazy, unappreciative ### up for 120 seconds to just be thankful for everything we have, well then they're an ####### or a gigantic ####### baby. Maybe fat or lazy, possibly stupid - could be a combination of all of those things.

And also an avowed racist...see his "personal letters"...but, I did not know he smoked cigarettes ...anyone who enjoys a good (bundle-of-sticks), is alright in my book, so that makes him a swell guy, IMO.

i'm just glad NBC took the time to have their cameras scan both team's sidelines to find out if anyone was disrespecting America last night :thumbup:  now we know who to hate.

hopefully the FBI had similar cameras scanning the crowd so we can plaster the rest of the non-patriots names in their local papers. that way they can be dealt with, too.
