ESPN's Rob Demovsky believes the Packers "clearly" gave Aaron Rodgers permission to speak with the Jets about a trade. ​

Demovsky was following up on a Tuesday ESPN report about Rodgers having conversations with the Jets about a possible trade this offseason. "Not sure yet whether they've given Rodgers and any other teams permission to talk or if it's just the Jets at this point," Demovsky said. The ESPN report described the Jets as a "realistic option" for Rodgers if the mercurial 39 year old does not retire. The two sides would have to figure out Rodgers' massive, complex contract situation if he is to head to New York and play under offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, with whom he worked closely in Green Bay before the 2022 season. The Packers are reportedly ready to move on with Jordan Love as the team's starter if Rodgers approves of a trade or calls it quits.

It's been cleared by the national media that the Packers have allowed this to happen. Now we'll simply have to see what kind of vibes Rodgers gets from meeting with the Jets. There's a clear tier break in available quarterbacks after Rodgers, so one could argue this is a make-or-break meeting for New York's offseason. The Jets could possibly come back to Jimmy Garoppolo if Rodgers refuses to give them a rose. All eyes remain on Rodgers as the rest of the quarterback carousel waits for his resolution to get things going.

lol agreed - Wilson should be a complete non-factor in this decision - however multiple articles in the past show that Wilson and Rodgers are friendly. Wilson called him for advice many times. Rodgers isnt a good "mentor" in that hes not going to specifically teach Wilson but I think being around each other may be a benefit to Wilson. JD seems to be obsessed with not having the obvious Wilson bust on his resume and this would be a move to keep a glimmer of hope alive.

Favre got traded to the Jets for a 4th round pick with a year left on his contract. He signed the year after with the Vikings, meaning the Jets didn’t eat any dead cap money.

I doubt the Jets will only fork over a 4th round pick for Rodgers. I’m not sure what the trade would do to his cap hit, but it looks as of now he would leave behind a $25 million cap charge if he doesn’t play past this season (not sure what the Packers would have to pay).

Given all that, I doubt the Jets would want to take on his contract, cap hit, and draft picks for him to only play one season. And there’s no way Rodgers would be worse than Wilson (or Favre back in the day).

Unless he’s cut by the Jets, he could sign anywhere else. They would have to trade him. Not sure any of that would make sense.

I just remember the Jets season going south late in the season, and Favre not looking very good by the end of the year. That was the year Brady got hurt and MIA won 9 out of 10 to close out the season to knock NE out of the playoffs. I don't recall much more than that.

ESPN's Dianna Russini reports "there's optimism in the Jets’ organization that they are on the brink" of acquiring Aaron Rodgers. ​

Jets officials, including owner Woody Johnson, met with Rodgers in "extensive" talks this week, according to Russini, and Johnson left the sit-down "excited and satisfied" with Rodgers' potential fit in the Jets offense. Russini said the Packers and Jets "remain engaged in conversations about compensation and contract" and that "those conversation already started before the meeting." With the Packers reportedly ready to move on from their longtime quarterback, Rodgers could become a Jet in the coming days -- barring a last-minute change of heart for the mercurial QB. The Jordan Love era in Green Bay seems close at hand, and the Zach Wilson era in New York appears over.

I doubt the Jets will only fork over a 4th round pick for Rodgers. I’m not sure what the trade would do to his cap hit, but it looks as of now he would leave behind a $25 million cap charge if he doesn’t play past this season (not sure what the Packers would have to pay).

Given all that, I doubt the Jets would want to take on his contract, cap hit, and draft picks for him to only play one season.

What Happens if the Packers Trade Aaron Rodgers?

Rodgers does not have a no trade clause in his contract so he could be traded to a team as well. The timing of the option should give the Packers all the way until the end of training camp to move him. The cap charge here would depend on when he was traded. If Rodgers were to be traded prior to June 1st the Packers would take on a $40,313,750 cap hit in 2023. If he was traded after June 1st it would be a $15,833,570 cap hit in 2023 with $24,480,000 due in 2024. This assumes that the Packers did not exercise the option before the trade. If the option is exercised then the trade number spikes to nearly $100 million. There should be no need to exercise the option until the last possible day.

For the team acquiring Rodgers they would be on the hook for the salary for the year. The cap charge would be $59,515,000 if they do not exercise his option and $15.79 million if they were to exercise the option. Rodgers has an injury guarantee of $49.25 million for 2024 but that does not become fully guaranteed until 5 days after the 2023 Super Bowl. If Rodgers was cut after 2023 it would cost the team $43.725 million on the 2024 cap. If he retired they could split that as $14.575 million in 2024 and $29.15 million in 2025 using a similar June 2nd date as mentioned above in the retirement option.

Assuming the Jets acquire him and exercise his option, this suggests his cap hit in 2023 would be just $15.79M, but releasing him after 2023 would leave a dead cap hit of $43.725M against the 2024 cap. This supports the notion that it would not be for just one season.

I also saw a blurb that all parties involved are discussing revising AR's contract, what would work for both teams, and what assets would be moved for the Jets to acquire him. Based on that, who knows what the new contract particulars would be, if the Packers would be willing to pay some of his salary, if Rodgers is willing to give up anything to get moved, what the cap hit would then be for GB, what the cap hit would be for NYJ in the future, etc. Bottom line, everything about Rodgers' contract could change in the next few days. All that aside, I doubt the Jets are looking to acquire Rodgers with any consideration of him only playing for one season.

That leaves the ball firmly in Rodgers' court as he continues to contemplate a potential retirement. That said, the options now appear clear - either play for the Jets in 2023 or retire from football. Another piece of fallout from the reports is the near certainty of the Packers being quarterbacked by Jordan Love moving forward. Updating previous reports, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Packers and Jets "have not agreed to the framework of an Aaron Rodgers trade."​

This comes just hours after reports from multiple agencies surfaced stating the contrary. Pelissero adds, "If he decides he wants to go to New York, then the teams will work to hammer out a deal." Whatever the case may be, all eyes are currently fixed on Aaron Rodgers, the Packers, and the Jets as the three parties continue to work towards their respective futures. The likeliest scenario still stands that Aaron Rodgers has played his last down for Green Bay, indicating a shift in focus to third-year quarterback Jordan Love.

No way he would ever stay retired.

Now what's right up his alley is to retire now. This way he can act like he's above the money and try and show people who said he could not walk away from it they don't know what they are talking about. He'll have a few laughs about on the Pat McCaffee show, about how people think they know but they don't know. He'll enjoy soaking up a few weeks of the post-mortem, the stories about his greatness, that sort of thing. GB will try and deal with the cap hit and move forward with Love. Then he'll choose to return later when it's to late to trade him and GB will be stuck with him.
