QB Aidan O'Connell, LV (1 Viewer)

Of all the mid to late round/UDFA qbs who have gotten meaningful snaps this season I like O’Connell the most. He seems to be relaxing a lot more and when he gets in a rhythm he can be really effective - he spreads the ball around and goes through progressions.

I get young Kirk Cousins on the Redskins vibes from him. Not sure Raiders are willing to commit to him being starter next season (heck, it sounded like they weren’t committed to him this week), but I think he has solid NFL starter upside. His lack of running doesn’t make him a high ceiling fantasy qb but he can throw some pretty nice passes at all levels.

Such a great pocket passer...some of those throws last night were just perfection. Just get this kid some more reps and put him in the right situation to make quick reads.

Needs protection. Last night was one of the few games where the Raider OL wasn't dog doo at pass pro, likely due to the Chargers giving up on their season. Raiders need to upgrade their line this offseason. They have only one plus starter across the unit, and ironically, he was out last night.

I knew he was good when earlier in the season I saw him hit WRs in stride on mid range passes and I'm talking 15+ yards downfield.

He throws like Brady. Problem is he also runs like Tom, but doesn’t have GOAT's pre- or post-snap processor, so when protection is a problem, he is (at least thus far) unable to overcome.

His throwing ability is amazing though. Accuracy, touch and timing are elite level.

I'll say it again...as a Purdue fan I'll never forget the game where he started making NFL type throws. The Nebraska game really was a highlight reel of NFL type throws. Especially in the 2nd half.

We had him QB28 this week. :bag:

That's about where most everyone had him ranked this week. But still. Big miss.

This performance was so anomalous, that no one could have seen it coming. AOC coming off a game against the Vikings, in which his team scored 0 points, playing against the Chargers a second time, wherein in the first game he had a QBR of 8. Even Vegas expected a stinker of a game with an O/U of 34.5. Is it a miss if the entire industry didn't see it coming? I guess it comes down to what you consider a "miss". For me, it's a miss if (even in hindsight) there were factors that could have been considered, that weren't that would have led to a different prediction. If you have Tua ranked highly, and Hill goes down in the first quarter, so Tua has a stinker of a game, is that a miss?

I can not see why the Raiders would not go to AOC as their starting quarterback—no disrespect to Minshew. I was happy with what I saw from AOC; the leap from year one should not be discounted. He is going into his first camp as a Vet. He knows how things work. The comfort level should be there, and the learning curves should not be as steep. The upside is there for AOC. The Minshew upside is still in Jacksonville. You know what Minshew is, and that is an excellent backup quarterback. I suppose he could be a bridge for the next quarterback. It does not look like a tanking team, though.

I've been preaching that for months. Minshew is a good backup QB and that's it. There isn't any upside with him. There may not be with O'Connell either, but they should find out.

I'm an O'Connell fan. Had a couple big fantasy weeks over the last month of the season with 28 and 23 point outings. Worked hard from being a walk-on to excelling as a starter at Purdue. Would like to see him take the next step in the NFL.

voice of Purdue Football Tim Newton says Aidan O'Connell is the most accurate quarterback at Purdue since Drew Brees from 20 years ago.

Draft Day: Aidan O'Connell Was Better than Drew Brees at Purdue

O'Connell came to Purdue as a walk-on from Long Grove, Illinois.

He became a starter and over the past two seasons threw for more than 7,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. At 66.7 percent, O'Connell is the most accurate passer in Purdue history.

A pure pocket passer who excels at reading coverage and getting the ball out quickly. An intelligent, well-prepared player who can go through a read progression and consistently put the ball where he wants it. Above average arm strength he can get the ball outside the hashes with solid velocity. Natural accuracy down the field. Layers the ball over defenders with a good trajectory and a tight spiral. Keeps things on time. Will get it out in a hurry and sets his targets up for after-catch opportunities. He can throw receivers open versus man coverage and is accurate on route conversions. Minimal escape ability but flashes ability to move in the pocket.

AOC ran a 4.7 forty at his pro day. Even if that figure is off by a couple tenths, he's way more athletic than he is given credit for. He will never be a running QB, but if he looked like a statue at times last year (he did), that was more mental than physical.

Considering he was a rookie 3rd stringer all last offseason and nearly every week in season until he became the starter midway through; and that he showed plenty of flashes when he did become the weekly starter, including an 8-0 TD-Int ratio in his final four games, there is a remarkable lack of enthusiasm about this dude heading into year 2.

Pierce mentioned this and a discussion with Marvin Lewis confirming his beliefs.
He's been on football teams that were far better than their record but the morale was low due to QB play. The effort was there but it eats at ya during a season and eventually you've got something of a loser mentality and if that ever hits you're cooked.
He mentioned some team he was on that blew games in the fourth Q because they didn't have good defensive depth or run game and ya gotta have both to close out games.

What I heard was AOC is going to be given the chance and this isn't Minshew's job to lose as I've seen presented.

He had some meetings with personnel and then with coaches. Assumed he meant can't fill all needs so we're going to have to push these guys.
I really enjoy listening to him talk about the importance of backup players and competition. I often feel that doesn't exist as much in today's game. All my favorite teams had great depth and it's just something we all know to be true.

Another time he discussed AOC running a stripped down version of the offense and I thought he sounded like a guy covering for his boy. The difference in reps during the off-season is enormous between third and first string. I've seen this talk quoted ambiguously. If you want it to be a negative, you can easily do so. If you want it positive, that's there too. To each their own interpreting that but really why bother? Camp is about to give ya an answer

I think LV should stick with Aidan over Gardner, to see if he is their guy. As for FF, he offers nothing rushing, but I think he can become a good game manager. He avoids sacks pretty well, and his 62.1% completion rate is acceptable. In the limited time I got to watch him, he looked cool under pressure, not spazzy like a typical rookie.

Camp is about to give ya an answer

AOC looked like TB12 II last preseason. He may be TB12 II. He very probably isn't. Camp and preseason 2024 won't give the answer.

Side note, AOC changed his number to 12 this offseason.

This is funny to me because Minshew was a starter his rookie year as a 6th round draft pick on a team that was a dumpster fire. His second year was even worse as the Jags seemed to want to tank to draft Lawrence in 2021. With all that going on he still put up respectable numbers before being traded to teams with established qb's.

AOC is a 4th round draft pick who is getting all the praise for similar play, I'm not sold that he will be the day 1 starter on the Raiders.

If Pierce has any clue what he’s doing he’ll give AOC every chance to start. Worst case, maybe they get a top 5 pick. Best case:

99.9% chance he isn’t, but they should settle for a Purdy type.

Unreal Week 4 Raiders vs Chargers. The team overcomes the 6 sack K Mack performance to get within tying/winning it in the last 3 minutes.
AOC throws to J Meyers at the goal line but A Samual gets the INT as Meyers isn't looking for the ball.

AOC was very composed in the pocket with some big pressure by that defense but lost 2 fumbles on the sacks.
Those two do establish a connection but this was his first start.

Next Gen Stats
Aidan O'Connell's 58-yard TD pass to Tre Tucker traveled 50.4 yards in the air, O'Connell's longest completion of his career.

Have to seriously think about AOC as a pickup. I have Bo Nix on Bye next week, currently have Cousins on deck to cover the Bye.

Raiders schedule
14 - at Buccaneers
15 - vs Falcons
16 - vs Jaguars
17 - at Saints

Jordan Schultz
Sources: #Raiders fear QB Aidan O'Connell suffered a season-ending knee injury today vs Tampa Bay. He is undergoing additional testing to confirm the full severity.

But a tough year gets even tougher in Vegas as Desmond Ridder would be the next man up with four games left.
