QB Baker Mayfield, TB (2 Viewers)

ESPN's Jake Trotter reports Baker Mayfield's left shoulder injury isn't season ending and won't "require surgery immediately."

The Browns are reportedly waiting for a second opinion on Mayfield's injury before they make a decision on his Thursday night status. Mayfield aggravated his already-injured non-throwing shoulder in the team's Week 6 blowout loss to Arizona, and appeared at his postgame presser with his arm in a sling. It's difficult to say whether a healthy Case Keenum would be a downgrade for Cleveland pass catchers considering Mayfield's recent injury-related struggles. We likely won't know who's starting for the Browns until game day.

apparently he's been playing with a torn left labrum, and Mayfield admitted to wearing a harness of some sort.

hope they can figure something else out for this Sunday.

Knowing this I was shocked he came back in the game after the way he fell on it.  I'll be equally shocked if they don't shut him down for awhile to heal.

He’s already said publicly he wants to play Thursday.

I think they should just him down for at least a week.

What’s the point of paying Keenum if they let Mayfield play injured on a short week?

It was floating this morning that #Browns QB Baker Mayfield was not going to play even after the confidence he expressed to the media that he would. My understanding is Mayfield is dealing w/ more than just a torn labrum & that became more prevalent this am too per league source.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Torn rotor cuff????

This needs to be a case where some adults in the room stand up and shut this guy down to protect him from himself. Love Baker's mentality here, but it's a detremint in this instance. Shut it down at least for a 3-week IR stint to start and then reassess if coming back is

a. realistic from a health perspective, and

b. worthwhile, based on the Browns record and playoff hopes at that point.

Anyone who saw the way he landed this past weekend (on an already torn-up shoulder) knows that thing is absolutely shredded now. The shoulder isn't meant to move like that.

Speaking after Thursday's Week 7 win over the Broncos, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski did not rule out a Week 8 return for Baker Mayfield (shoulder).

Mayfield revealed via FOX's Jay Glazer before the game that he is dealing with a fracture in his non-throwing shoulder in addition to his torn labrum. It has already been reported that surgery is a matter of when, not if. The Browns' "mini bye" comes at an ideal time with Mayfield having 10 days to decide if he can get right for Week 8 against the Steelers. We wouldn't count on it, but backup Case Keenum was lifeless enough on Thursday that the Browns are going to at least give it some time.

That's 6 weeks to heal, at least, according to the internet
4 to 6 MONTHS if/when he gets surgery and that is the BEST CASE scenario if he doesn't dislocate or further injure the shoulder because that would cause bone loss and permanent damage.

Looking very-much like we should shut him down and get the surgery done NOW where he can't do further damage and where he'd be ready for next season.  Doubtful he'd get heeled enough at the right time to win playoff gameS so why waste a roster  spot and do permanent damage?

Baker Mayfield needs 4-6 months to recover from shoulder surgery if it doesn’t get worse, surgeon says; Fracture is non-displaced

... If a bone needs to be repaired or fortified, Mayfield could be looking at a long recovery time, Dr. Brian Schulz, M.D., sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, said in a phone interview.

Every time the shoulder pops out, “you can have a new injury or worsening of the pre-existing injury,’’ which could mean a more invasive surgery, Schulz said.

...at some point soon, would be to have the surgery now and start the recovery process for next season. That would have him back in full football activity by about April — the start of the offseason program — providing he doesn’t need bone repair. If he does, it would require pins or screws, or possibly even a bone graft if it got bad enough.

If it’s just the current fracture which will heal on its own, Mayfield would only need a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure, which can be done on an outpatient basis. Still, he would need 4-6 months to return to full football activity.

“It takes two to three months for the labrum to heal, so if you’re going to fix it, you want to give it adequate time to heal,’’ Schulz said. “And then you’ve got to strengthen the muscles again.’’

Schulz said Mayfield will need surgery either during or after the season “because he’s not going to want to have to deal with his shoulder popping out here and there the rest of his career.’’
Shut him down, just shut him down to save himself from himself.

100% agree with the bolded. I'm glad Mayfield is motivated and wants to play, that's the attitude you want to see out of your QB. But I hope the STAFF does THEIR job and doesn't mortgage the future by being reckless with his health.

I have a history of these same injuries, including the bone loss permanent damage.  Everything I've seen in these articles echoes the medical advice that I've received over the years.  I shudder every time I see Mayfield take one of these hits - I couldn't even watch the replay of the one from last week because you just tell the way his arm was extended when he went down.....that's a dislocation.

I've tried a shoulder harness, which Mayfield has been wearing, and like the article says, it really doesn't do much to hold the shoulder in place.  It's better than nothing, but it's not a miracle cure - clearly, because he's dislocated twice since the initial injury.

The good news is that in the long-term, if you can get the surgery soon, without doing any more damage, it has a better chance of a permanent fix.  But the more he goes out there and keeps injuring it, the more risk he's running in the long-term.  Then again, he's also paid millions to play football - just a hazard of the profession when it's a non-throwing shoulder.

Either way he's a tough son of a #####.

ESPN's Dan Graziano reports the Browns could sign Baker Mayfield to a contract worth more than $30 million per year.

"I still think — actually, I know — that the Browns would bring Mayfield back for the right price," Graziano said. "I don’t think they want to pay him at Patrick Mahomes/Josh Allen levels, but they believe they can win with him and would pay him in the mid-to-high $30 millions per year to stick around." It would be a shockingly rich deal for a quarterback who has struggled through much of his first four years in the NFL, and whose 2021 play has been up and down at best. Mayfield hit his stride during the final six games of the 2020 season, throwing 11 touchdowns to one interception with a 65.4 percent completion rate. Making Mayfield one of the four or five highest paid QBs is risky, to put it mildly. But teams don't often let potential franchise signal callers walk in free agency.

Visual evidence of how the shoulder injury is affecting Baker Mayfield's throwing motion.

See how HIGH his NON-throwing shoulder is when he was healthy as he throws.

HEALTHY SHOULDER throwing motion:

Now look at how low and tucked-in his NON-throwing injured-shoulder is when he attempts a throw.

Obviously he can't follow-through the way he can with a healthy shoulder which affects the accuracy of any throw but ESPECIALLY with deeper throws because for every degree of depth the accuracy will decrease by multiples if the release point is off.

Just announced as starter.

Personally think it's a mistake but my guess is, he has one more chance to prove he can deal with it and still win a game. PIT will be trying like hell to take him out so the situation will probably resolve itself in game as I think one good shot and he's done. If CLE wins the game and he doesn't cost them then this is what it's going to look like for the rest of the season until he gets shut down, either willingly or via a hit on the field. My  :2cents:

Baker Mayfield completed 14-of-21 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns in Cleveland's 41-16 domination of the Bengals.

The Odell Theory continued on Sunday as the Browns scored 41 points in their first game with Beckham's weight off their shoulders due in part to Mayfield's season-high 10.3 yards per attempt and 67% completion rate, finding Donovan Peoples-Jones for a 60-yard touchdown and a 26-yard sideline route with the game already wrapped up in the fourth quarter. Cleveland's defense also played a large part in Sunday's win, honing in on Joe Burrow for five sacks and two interceptions including a 98-yard pick-six to get on the board first. The 5-4 Browns will continue fighting for a spot in the postseason in a feisty Week 10 matchup against the Patriots.

Bakes is THE guy in CLE, and will be for a long time. The albatross around his neck is now gone.

If he is THE guy in CLE and will be there for a long time the Brows are going to have to pony up some cash.

As a Steelers fan I am 100% behind Baker's quest for a huge contract extension.

nature of the game. every QB is going to get paid. he wont and he KNOWS he wont get top $. but he'll get paid like any QB who extends past his rookie deal is.

cap going to increase yr by yr, so it is what it is. the contract worries me very little.

And Browns fans LOVE what  the Steelers have  done to address their QB position.

Mmmmwaaa Chef's kiss.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Baker Mayfield (knee) is considered day-to-day.

Stefanski added that the team is "feeling good about where he is this morning." A post-game x-ray revealed no structural damage to his knee. Mayfield likely could have rejoined his offense on the field after the injury but New England had already amassed an insurmountable lead. for now, we'll assume that Mayfield is playing versus the Lions in Week 11, although he may be a bit less mobile than usual. If healthy, Mayfield will come in as a mid-QB2 option.

At some point, yes, the Browns will likely have to allocate a substantial portion of their budget to him in order to retain his services for the foreseeable future. I don't think that time is now nor do I think it is likely to be revisited this offseason unless Baker's contract demands migrate towards the Browns existing offer. I think the most likely scenario is Baker betting on himself in his option year with the long term contract being addressed no earlier than sometime during 2022 - and more likely after with the franchise tag option available in the back pocket (if he earns it).

Baker Mayfield (everything) returned to Browns practice on Thursday.

Dealing with shoulder, knee and foot injuries, Mayfield probably shouldn't be playing in a game where the Browns are 11.5-point home favorites, but both quarterback and coach have said he will be starting vs. the Lions. Fantasy managers do not have to follow suit, with Mayfield barely even offering QB2 appeal in his hobbled state with a shaky skill corps.

Is this a Tim Couch reference?
I don’t think so?

I was just saying that he didn’t do his presser, so I can only imagine what he would’ve said right after the game, if this was what he said after he cooled down for a day?

what’s the Tim Couch thing?

Some fans cheered when he was injured during a game. Same thing happened with DA too.

Baker Mayfield (shoulder, foot, groin) did not practice Wednesday.

Mayfield had previously said he planned to participate in practice on Wednesday. He ultimately showed up in street clothes and sat out of all activities. The Browns also listed him with a groin injury which is new. He had previously been listed with a knee injury, among his many other physical ailments. Mayfield is the most injured quarterback still attempting to play football right now and it shows in his play. He has four touchdowns and three interceptions over his previous four games and is averaging 173 passing yards in that stretch. Neither Mayfield nor any of his pass-catchers can be trusted from a fantasy perspective until he gets healthy.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said he would not bench Baker Mayfield after the team's Week 12 loss to the Ravens.

Not thrilled with a reporter's question about the banged-up Mayfield ceding playing time to Case Keenum, Stefanski asked why the Browns would make such a move. Mayfield wasn't awful against the Ravens on Sunday night, throwing for 247 yards and a touchdown in another offensive struggle for Cleveland. Since Week 10, Mayfield has completed 44 of 87 passes (50.5 percent) for 496 yards (5.7 yards per attempt), three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Pro Football Focus grades Mayfield as the 26th best passer this season, below QBs like Andy Dalton and Carson Wentz. The Browns have the league's ninth lowest expected points added (EPA) per drop back over their past three games. Cleveland's offense couldn't possibly be worse with Keenum at the helm. The Browns are on bye in Week 13.
