QB Cam Newton, Retired (2 Viewers)

Some of those quotes from Shula don't really exude confidence that he knows w,t,f he is going to do with some of his new weapons.  This quote in particular made me lol:
Wife and I were talking exactly about this topic - this is Shula's make or break year.  He has all the tools necessary to build a very difficult offense to stop - if he can't do it with this team he just flat out can't do it.  Across all the options he has league leading attributes in speed, height, catch radius, scat, and power running styles.  As an O.C. he should have jizzed himself with excitement but I'm not picking that up from the initial Q&A sessions with him.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, coach Ron Rivera told Ross Tucker the Panthers want Cam Newton to run less and get rid of the ball more quickly.

Their offseason tells the same story after Carolina added Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel in the first two rounds, two players who should do most of their receiving damage around the line of scrimmage. That said, Newton has not been particularly effective targeting players near the line, and it could be difficult for him to abandon his running ability, essentially his trump card, in the heat of the moment. Along with his health, Newton's ability to adapt will be an important storyline to monitor in camp.

Coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Cam Newton (shoulder) is throwing to teammates in summer workouts in Baltimore.

"Apparently his shoulder is fine," said Rivera. Newton did some light throwing at last month's minicamp, but it sounds like he's ramped it up in the month-plus of off time between then and next week's training camp, where he should come back at or near 100 percent. Newton is much farther along in his rehab than Andrew Luck.

Cam Newton reported to Panthers camp at 246 pounds.

Newton is listed at 245, but has played closer to 260 for the majority of his career. Coach Ron Rivera is a fan of the weight loss, which could increase Newton's quicks while still providing plenty of armor against oncoming rushers. Newton will be limited through the early days of camp, but is fully on track for Week 1.

Speaking Thursday, Cam Newton said he took his down 2016 personally, and that this season is "not just another year."

"I can't let that happen again. Ever," Newton said. "I just want to get my swag back." Newton admitted the experience was "humbling." Newton said he locked in earlier than usual in the offseason, and that it's one of the reasons he reported to camp lighter. He also said he has no plans to stop running. "That's my edge. You going to expect a lion not to roar?" Newton's attitude is in the right place. Now he needs to clean up his accuracy, especially in the short-passing game, which figures to be a greater emphasis this year.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Cam Newton (shoulder) "seems like he's gotten over the hump."

Per Rapsheet, Newton is "feeling better," and "should be back soon." Rapoport could just be reading the tea leaves, but this has been the feeling out of Panthers camp over the past few days. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier Tuesday that Newton will play "at some point in the preseason."

NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon reports the Panthers will "increase" Cam Newton's workload this week.

Newton is not going to play in the second preseason game, but the Panthers' don't seem to be worried about his Week 1 availability. Blackmon's source said it's "so far so good" with Newton's progress. Newton is a high-upside pick in fantasy drafts this season who will enjoy the addition of explosive first-round RB Christian McCaffrey.

I’ve never been a big Newton guy. I think he improves from last year, but is nowhere near the elite ab’s in the league. I

Holding Cam in a keeper league. Spent too much in a trade to get him and feel I have to give him one more year. I have high optimism for a turnaround compared to last year. My gut tells me to just trust my instincts. Cam may not be a QB1.......or he just may be. Counting on the latter.

My :twocents:

Cam was the #1 QB in my league two years ago. Is it possible he was banged up and had a down year?

Relax, dude is good and can be elite, he does get rushing TDs and still in the prime of his career. Hopefully with a healthy shoulder and some more weapons he will be back to the top tier.

Agreed. I think he is primed for a bounce back season. The guy rushes for five TDs a year by accident.

I just wonder if there will be a significant drop in his number of rushing attempts, and if they'll try to avoid having him take as many carries around the goal line.

I doubt it, he's their best goal line option.

I have Cam in my keeper league and I'm trying to decide if I'm keeping him or Russell Wilson. Leaning Wilson right now
I've been one of Cam's biggest fans here, when he's on he's really fun to watch. But I'd take the relative stability of Wilson over cam rather easily as your starter.

I know this, I like that the Panthers still had a design run for him at the GL, didnt make it, but I like the attempt. Shows they are not worried about that shoulder. I am not worried about the shoulder, just worried about how many games it will take to knock off the rust.

The weapons are nice and he coulda had a great day if not for a bad pass and for a good GL stand by the 9'ers. Two TDs just possible there. He is still going to be a very good fantasy QB now that he is healthy and once the rust is gone. Glad they didnt rush him since he was this close.

Anyone else here getting nervous about trotting out Cam???

He certainly hasn't given owners much to be happy about.  THEN yesterday he lost Greg Olsen. That broken foot virtually guaranteed to send him to injured reserve and it may well be a season ender.  More bad news for Cam Newton as perhaps his most trustworthy target is now gone.

I wasn't exactly stoked about the numbers he has been putting up, and this may send me into full stream mode now.  I doubt I will outright cut him at this point, but if he continues to put up numbers like he did yesterday, he might get the axe just yet.

Week 4 is a definite no-no vs. the Patriots at home, but this coming week versus the Saints should be a great week.

(I thought I might have gotten a great steal of Cam in the 10th round, in the only spot I own him) Now, its not looking like a great bargain at all, more like a trap.  :wall:

I'd like to hear some more thoughts on what other Cam owners are contemplating.

It still just two weeks in the year for him, lots of bad football and he is still knocking rust off and lost Olsen.

However, If he does not light up New Orleans at home after Tommy just threw for 300 in the first half, he is a no go for any start for me for the rest of the year. I'm not talking 240  2 TDs and a pick, I'm talk 350, 3 TDs and no picks type stuff. He has to do something like that, or else he is just a guy who can be cut for a guy like Siemien.

Cam is a talent, but that OLine and terrible play calling will hinder this team.

Cam owner as well-- He threw the ball much better yesterday than he did in week 1-- he had 2- 25 rushing in the first quarter than not another attempt the rest of the game. He took 7 sacks on deep drops either refusing to check down or there not being a check down available.

I don't think the sky is falling and if they were better in the redzone yesterday and he has 2 tds, its a great game-- but I am definitely concerned. The lack of rushing yards is frusterating-- but had to be expected as Cam ages.

Without Olsen and CMC not being the stud everyone though he would be. Maybe, let Cam do his thing again instead of relying on a rookie RB who isnt that great.

Let him do his thing and he will get hurt. They need to look at the upcoming NFL draft for a new QB. This guy sucks. If he couldn't run, he'd be worse that Derek Anderson.

Newton owner here. I'm a little concerned. Having entered the season without a quality backup I'll likely put a claim in for Smith this week.
